Oh my goodnes, IronJaw.  My grandmother and grandfather and mother and aunts were all Polish.  They lived in a small town call Fall City, Texas.  A few miles away was a German town called Poth.  My grandmother was the sweetest lady EVER.  I had never heard her speak unkindly about any race.

Not everyone who wants legal immigration is racist.  I wish you ladies would stop implying that.  There's a small amount of logic that needs to be addressed...legal vs. illegal.  Look up the definition.

    3monstmama,

Here is a list of the 100 top paying American companies.  All are extremely profitable.  It is not necessary to pay minimum wage to make a profit or pay dividends.

Shirley - no one on this thread has said they do not want legal immigration. To insinuate otherwise is simply not true.

I just sent my Ray of Sunshine flowers at his workplace for being sooooooo good to me.  Is that too girly.  Do you think it will embarrass him?

Yes, we live in the most uncompassionate country EVER!

As far as health care.  A friend of mine was telling me about a gal who used to waitress at the Pizza Hut.  She has some kind of autoimmune disease.  I do not know what it's called.  Anyway, she has no insurance and cannot afford it.  She goes to Duke University Medical Center for her health care.  She sees a rheumy there.  According to my friend, it took them a long time to figure out what was wrong with her.  Her disease is sort of like Lupus.  Anyway, I can guarantee that this woman who has no insurance is getting very good care.  I do know Duke has a clinic for people who need financial help.  I took my SIL there.

I suppose there are some places that will treat people with chronic diseases without insurance.

    PiP - You can't, because you're Canadian.  :-P

Blue - It'll only embarrass him if there's a singing and dancing clown delivering the flowers.  I went there once.  Maybe that's why I'm not married anymore?

    Love you too, Sandy!!

I  just threw a glass of cold water on my Ray of Thunderclouds to remind him to get up for his medical appt.  Is that too "girly" of me?  I don't think it will embarrass him cause it's a lot nicer than my usual reminders.  Glad you like my new nickname, Blue.  One has to work hard to deserve being annointed with such nice names from the higher ups.Smile

    Again with the anecdotes.

Shirley, nobody is saying that the US is not compassionate.  However....there are a lot of statements and beliefs being tossed out here that are definitely NOT compassionate.  Big difference.

Ok guys I may sound a bit harsh and since when is "Liberal" a bad word.......I thought you on the left embraced that word........

But you really don't have a clue what is happening....

Here in Texas where I have lived for 44 years and I lived 10 years in New Mexico 1 mile from the Navajo Nation (again you guys have no idea about our Native Americans but I digress)

Here in Dallas we have been an Anchor City..(thank goodness that is changing).....that is if you don't have proper papers if you are stopped for some reason you are not sent back to your homeland.......

Our county hospital (Parkland Hospital) is the number 1 destination for women from Mexico and beyond to be smuggled (by coyotes) into the United States and driven up Interstate 45 to have their babies that become American citizens......

Does anyone here understand and can even comprehend what happens to these women on their trip coming  to Dallas....they are raped repeatedly.......they are exploited.....they are put into the sex trade........many times their brand new babies are taken from them and "held" so they will be compliant.........they are put into the drug trade.......the illegal activities are endless.......

The 14th amendment is not doing these illegal moms any favors but putting them into a life of danger and again makes their lives worthless to the "Sponsors"..........

As far what to do with the illegals here........there are some ideas on the table but let me ask anyone of you "Progressives" (hope that is better) when you have a broken water pipe do you fix it before you stop the flow of water?........I don't know how you gals on the left would do that but I think that most of us on the right would first turn our water off and then call a plumber........

Shirley:  How can you say the US is the most "uncompassionate country ever"?  We are known worldwide for our compassion and the help we give to so many countries in need.  When you post that the US is uncompassionate you are really stating the "people" are uncompassionate and I truly resent that statement.  We have a country of some of the most caring people in the world and when problems occur in other countries, we usually are the first to respond with money, food, and/or help!

    notself:

I'm not sure I understand.  I looked at the first 30 and couldn't see too many companies that deal with food manufacture/production or clothing which are where most immigrants of the type we are discussing end up working.  How many times have we heard of "Whole Foods" referred to as "Whole Paycheck"?  How many of us talk about how much a cup of coffee costs at Starbucks and don't buy there because of it?  yet both these entities do pay benefits and better wages. . .

I see that Mattel is on the list--Mattel may be a great place to work in the US but their production is all off-shore and they do not have a great reputation in those factories.  Lots and lots of sweatshops with young uneducated underage women. . . ..

We seem to have two discussions going on---the initial one that I posted on which is repeal of the 14th amendment and illegal immigration in general.  I oppose repeal of the 14th amendment for all of the reasons previously argued.  I would agree that our immigration policy needs to be reformed however I think the reason it never gets reformed is because illegal immigration benefits our society for all of the reasons.

A wholly separate topic---which I decline to get into unless I get TRULY incensed---is the inevitable note of racism whenever immigration gets discussed anywhere in this country.  All the cr@p about crime rates as though crime and those people are the same thing.  I used to live in an immigrant neighborhood, one that probably had more illegals than legals.  It was the quietest place I ever lived---everyone in bed by 9pm because they all had to get up in the morning and work.  There are plenty of illegal Western Europeans [and Canadians! ] in this country but somehow when ever we talk about illegal immigration, no one is thinking of the Western Europeans who make up an SS# to get work in a museum, nope, its always the dishwashers. . . . . .

Why are you all so concerned about Mexican law breakers?  There are atrocities being committed all over the world.

Why are you not concerned about the plight of Muslim women all over the world.  Anyone here comment last week on the story about a 14 year old Muslim girl being raped by a 40yr old, then SHE was brutally and fatality punished??  It happens every day in the Middle East.  Muslim violence against women is spreading into out country - look at Detroit

What about all of the brutal dictators in the world?  Haiti , Africa where the ruling class lives in million dollar palaces and people are starving to death.  Or as in the case of Barry's brother living in a mud floor hut making $14 / year.  Does that not bother you, if it were your half brother would you be doing anything to help him ??  You could help the millions like him

Here in the US - our educations system and teachers are failing out children.  We are condemning thousands of children who drop our of school to a life of poverty.  Are teachers talking about this....naw.... just concerned with their next contract, retirement and adding a few more "personal days" to their 8 month work year.  (please I have already read your "stories" about teachers you know working 15 hours days - so save it)

Why not put the energy you waste on the computer all day long into something productive.  Take up a cause, help America's children.  Volunteer somewhere, tutor someone.  Give back to this great country you were privileged to be born in

Help your own country in some way instead of being so concerned about law breakers, drug smugglers, terrorists and pimps coming in here ILLEGALLY costing  border states and all of us millions each day !

I love giving my men flowers!  He deserves them for taking such good care of you.

Reagan was very pro-immigrant, and yes, he gave amnesty to the illegals that were here.  Bush was also not tough on illegal immigrants.  The Obama administration has been deporting illegals in record numbers, but have targeted those with criminal records.  It is incredibly naive to think that the solution is to round every one of them up and deport them, businesses and therefore our economy can not afford the hit. My ignore button gets a lot of use, so I can't see what some post, but from others' responses I take it there has been some name calling.  You can call me a political poser, but only if we can call you Tea Party trolls. Is turnabout not fair play? I suggest if you do not like our opinions, use the "ignore" button for a change, rather than the "report this post".  Just my opinion.

Again Shokk....nobody is saying that any of this behaviour is acceptable by any means.  But how do you stand behind changing the constitution to solve the problem?  No one who condones this change has answered that question with anything but the horror stories like yours.

It is like when you tell about a murder in Canada that proves gun control is wrong.  Or that someone had a bad experience with health care to prove how horrible the Canadian system is.  I guarantee you that I can pull up any story to back up what ever I want to say about any country/system/person/political party/etc.

Nice, Erice 31 - talking about people on this board sitting at their computers all day doing nothing for their "great" country - I lived in your "great" country for 25 years and volunteered in politics, teaching, meals on wheels, etc., etc. I also worked full time for most of it and paid taxes - now I am back in my "great" country and volunteer at the local hospital - all this with bc - I am "only" stage 3 so I can actually do this but what about all our sisters on this board who can only get on their computers and who help each of us out every single day and night (the nights are the worst, aren't they?) who go for treatments all the time and are feeling god awful - I think they are the TRUE VOLUNTEERS and I salute each and every one of them.

    Bring on the Brussel Sprouts!

If we would effectively seal the border, there would be no need to update the amendment to the Constitution since there wouldn't be a flow of pregnant women coming here to give birth to an anchor baby.  The occasional tourist who goes into labor early wouldn't cause the same kind of issues.

It is not just about people of one nationality or another.  In this era of global terrorism, it is vitally important to know who is coming to this country, and what potentially dangerous items and plans they may be bringing with them.  If anyone is coming over the border illegally, someone planning to do harm to our people, our country and our way of life can do the same.

The link Notself posted about Tyson -- exactly why I don't eat meat anymore.  Disgusting.

Anyone who complains about illegal workers and is unemployed or underemployed should take a job at Tyson or some other place like that until a more suitable one comes along.  Then there will be one less job for an illegal immigrant!  And you can demonstrate your great work ethic too!

Erica - Please do not presume to know what I do "all" day long. You know nothing about my day just as I know nothing about your day. You know nothing about my volunteer activities or what I do with my time. I only speak for myself, but DO NOT lecture me about things of which you know NOTHING.

So PIP I want to make sure I understand your post..........you are saying we should not amend the Constitution so that means that you were against Blacks being considered "full humans" and not 3/4ths of a white man and that women should not have equal rights and the right to vote......hmmmmm.......interesting........shokk
