Help me out here, please What was the title of the movie my son called 'the Star Trek with the whales"? I think of it now because Dr McCoy was appalled at the barbarity of medical treatment in the twentieth century.

Laura. I agree that people can't "have it all" but honestly it's appalling that people who need a life saving transplant get kicked off. How does one determine whose life is worthy and whose isn't. I have a personal friend that received a heart transplant at age 38...she is now 49 and living a great life. My Aunt is currently on the liver transplant list , she's 68 and conracted Hep C through the 128 blood tranfusions she had while being treated for Non-hodgkins lymphoma 20 years ago. She still has a lot of living to do but won't have the chance if she doesn't get a new liver. My brother donated bone marrow to a cancer patient. All of these services were done at no cost to the patient regardless of their income or lack thereof.

It's shameful. Kidney disease patients needing kidney transplants, hepatitis c and other liver disease patients that need liver transplants etc....absolutely shameful. Are children with leukemia that need bone marrow transplants off the list too?

How do you feel about women getting different BC treatment options because of their economic status? How do you feel if reconstructive breast surgeries weren't available to low income people on medicaid. These surgeries are not life threatening but they can make a difference in a person's life.

It seems to me that all of the low income people are being penalized in Arizona. People that
rely on government services are not all on it because they chose to be. Walk a mile in someone
else's shoes before judging the whole gamut of people.

Surely there is goverment waste in all kinds of areas that could have been cut instead of
medical services. Governments are notoriuos for wasteful spending. Maybe that's what everyone
should be stomping their feet about,

    Respectfully,
    Beth

Trim and cut Brussels sprouts in half.  Steam for about 5-6 minutes until almost tender.  Place a little olive oil in a frying pan and fry the Brussels cut side down until tender and the cut side is browned.  Squeeze fresh lemon juice over the sprouts and drizzle some honey over as well.  Stir and serve.

Adjust the lemon juice and honey to taste.  Absolutely wonderful.

Wasting a post here, I am sure but PatMom, how would lying about a familial relationship mean you had complied with rules about immigration?  I confess I am just scratching my little head over that.  Is not lying breaking the rules just as coming over the border without a visa?  Are you saying your family broke the rules to get here?  Dear oh dear.

Fact is the bulk of the people who were subjected to the inquisition on family already in the country were Asians attempted to immigrate to the US.  Do some research into Angel Island if you don't believe me.

Moreover, contrary to rumor, we do have a number of land borders like WITH CANADA [Hi Canada!] and with MEXICO [Hi Mexico!].  Do you really think it wasn't possible for people to take a ship to either a South American country or to Canada and just scurry over the border?  Fact is, it is FAR FAR FAR more likely that someone would claim they were here legally than would ever acknowledge coming illegally.

Re racially based immigration law---all the rules not allowing Asians to become citizens or not allowing women to enter the country at all.  All the rules that took American citizens of Japanese descent and stuck them in internment camps during WWII but which left all those of German and Italian descent in their homes and businesses.

I stand by my post and position.  Fear fear fear

Barbara, I'm glad that your brother is getting the treatment he needs. Athena I hope your cardiac appointment went well.

3 monstmama, I agree with your supposition re. fear of the unknown and lack of control. In addition, I also believe that when economic times are tough a subset of people become tribal and see a clear divide of "us" and "them." I also believe that this provides the fuel for the fires of dangerous demagogues, to tie in with Lindasa's post.

On immigration, I believe that we do need reform. However, I don't believe that repealing the 14th Amendment is the reform that is needed. I hold no malice for someone trying to provide for their family and taking jobs that are offered to them, and certainly no malice for blameless children. To my mind the problem should be approached from the other end - punish those who are hiring illegal aliens. But shouldn't we also have a better system of immigration, a system that would encourage doing things the right way?

And anyway, I'm more worried about the jobs and capital that are being exported and off-shored.

AnneW, playing "change the Constitution" could be fun. Let's see if I were in charge I could see some changes being made with the 2nd Amendment and perhaps a tightening of the 1st.

Laura, thank you for starting up the brussels sprouts conversation.

3monstamomma - you can PM Melissa - and bring to her attention your wrongly deleted post.  She will then reinstate the post and take you of your bread and water rations.  However, you will be allowed to keep the Tshirt and the secret handshake.

If the US is so short of money, why don't the get out of the war?  It seems a no brainer to me, save lives at home and abroad.

Hello, fellow deletees and others, Great news - my heart is FINE!!

Sigh - I could have told the doctor who sent me to a cardio consult that myself. I had open heart surgery as a child, in what was a life-and-death procedure performed by one of those famous surgeons who fly in, operate and leave. As a result, I have a heart murmur and also a very slightly obstructed aorta (there was a full obstruction that was corrected also during childhood). My EKGs are always abnormal. Non heart specialists are constantly alarmed, but those in the field know better. I have no restrictions and have never needed any maintenance care. In fact, I spent a good chunk of my childhood at more than 11,000 ft above sea level and won medals in varsity athletics there.

What freaked me out was when one of my doctors informed me two weeks ago that a medication I take, which is the most important one in my arsenal, could cause electrical problems in my heart and he didn't like my latest EKG. He is a wonderful, thorough man but cardiology is not his field. He would not take my protestations of "everything is fine" at face value and insisted on a cardiology consult. I was happy to give him the good news and chastise him for being alarmist for suggesting that, worst case scenario, I could require a pacemaker (like Cheney!!!!). The thought of having a third life threatening illness had had me in an awful state these past few days, although I was far more bothered by the prospect of having to do without the medication - dying of heart failure came second, frankly.

Barbara, so glad that your brother seems to be out of the woods. Today is a good day!

I guess that the UK doesn't cover cosmetic procedures?  Otherwise why would these women be medical tourists going to a hotel room for treatment that turned out badly?

    http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?section=news/local&id=7946599

SOUTHWEST PHILADELPHIA - February 9, 2011 (WPVI) -- Police say they've questioned one of two people in the case of a British woman who died after receiving cosmetic injections in her buttocks at a hotel near Philadelphia International Airport.

Investigators said officers issued a search warrant Tuesday night at the Bergen County, N.J., home of a woman they think set up the appointment online. The woman has been questioned but is not under arrest.

Philadelphia police Lt. Ray Evers said police believe she acted as a coordinator of buttocks and hip enlargements for the victim and another woman, communicating with them overseas by e-mail, text messages and phone calls to set up the visit - their second in recent months.

"Our information tells us these girls were here in November and did receive treatment from the same individuals," Evers said. The second woman who was being sought for questioning "was the actual person who performed the enhancements," he said.

Edited to include the start of the story since the link doesn't seem to work.

My insurance in the US didn`t cover cosmetic surgery either.  Nor in Canada.  I guess the UK women went for a cheap illegal procedure in the US combined with a vacation with their 2 other friends.  I don`t see what your point is Pat.

Let's solve the problem at the employer level rather than the illegal level or the Constitutional level.  No employers, no jobs, no reason for illegals to cross the boarder.

For those who want a Constitutional Amendment, answer the following questions.

How long do you think it will take to amend the Constitution?

How much will it cost to propose, pass and ratify the Constitutional Amendment?

How much will it cost to enforce the amendment?

We aren't deporting many illegals now.  How would a change to the Constitution improve enforcement of existing laws?

I will be pleasantly surprised if I get responses to these all of these questions because I sincerely believe that those who want an amendment have not thought things through.
