FYI--for all the conspiracy theorists out there ; )

Kept the telly off for the Thanksgiving weekend! Just wanted to celebrate with family all that we are thankful for instead of the usual political "discussion" that happens at our table! Worked like a charm. Of course, it helps to have a rambunctuous 18 month old grandbaby to entertain us. We were all ready for naps by 5 pm just watching her go non-stop. The turkey and gravy turned out the best ever. We bought the turkey at Trader Joe's--the brined one for $1.79 a lb. My only splurge on the meal. Had mimosas before dinner and pie (of course) after dinner. Yummy.
Have to say, we are still having turkey!! Will have the last of turkey (in a sandwich) today. Put a pot of chili con carne on the stove this am--for dinner tonight!
My daughter and sil announced that they are expecting child #2 sometime in August. So excited. Lexi will have quite an adjustment to make--with all the undivided attention she receives now. Granddad and I have promised ourselves that we will give her as much of the attention as we can while the new baby is tiny--and always spend special time with each of them.
The Obama birth certificate seems to be the story of the day; as well as the idea that he is "like Hitler," with socialism and our rotten economy. WTH?? There are some very, very ignorant people out there; as well as racist! Guess any attack will do at this point--there are always some who want to keep the "divide" among the citizens--divided we fall; united we conquer, I believe this is true. Time for us to unite if we are going to return the US of A to the people--all of the people--equitably!! Seems there are Americans out there who did not get a very good education. So sad.
Obama's swearing in can't come soon enough. Bush has all but disappeared--hopefully so he can't make any more bad decisions and ruin our economy even more!
As far as the automakers' CEOs go--reduce their salaries to $1. for the next year--and have them spend it reconfiguring their assembly lines to build public transportation that can cross state lines; and take the dinosaurs they have built this year, and are trying to sell below cost, and have them put in hybrid engine and whatever is needed to run cars, SUVs like the Japanese automakers--why are they trying to sell off their current stock at bargain basement prices; instead they should have been and should be innovative--and rebuild their vehicles to make them energy efficient. That should keep the workers working, and get these CEOs and managers to earn the salaries they have for the last three years. Don't know why we should "bail" them out, when they will only take care of the guys at the top!
My rant for the day!

Grace, congrats on your good grandchild news! We, too, are still eating turkey. It was nice to take a break from everything for a few days.
I can't believe that the birth certificate nonsense is still going on (well, OK, after the absurdities of the past election nothing really surprises me). In addition to the "fake" certificate claims aren't some of them also filing lawsuits claiming that Obama can't be president because his father wasn't American born? They'll get nowhere with this crap. More likely it will blow back on them like everything else they tried during the election.
A few words stood out for me in Obama's national security announcement--competence, pragmatism, accountability. The reading-between-the-lines message--we're so not going to be like the previous administration. Hallelujah!
Grace, I'm with you about the American automakers. They got in bed with the oil companies and chose to produce gas-guzzlers instead of biodiesels, electrics and hybrids. Some foreign carmakers with plants in the U.S. are unionized, and somehow they managed to make good cars and show a profit. It burns me up when I hear people blaming the union workers--the people who actually do the hard work--and giving the execs who decided what cars to produce a pass. These execs were getting millions and millions in bonuses even when the companies were tanking. What were they being rewarded for? If the unions are expected to make concessions, these outrageous executive contracts have to end as well.
Nice to see Hillary out there again. I think SoS is going to suit her well. She's going to have her hands full, that's for sure.

Cheer!! Yes! What is so hard to understand? These kinds of news articles, news reports and letters to congressmen should be printed, mailed and aired!!

Geez louise! Comparing Obama to Hitler? The birth certificate nonsense? It's time for some people to move through the denial and anger stages and into acceptance mode already.
He's going to be our president come January 20th, and for everybody's sake we should pray that he does a good job getting our country back on track.
Making up false predictions about a secret agenda, saying the media was in the tank and calling 53% of the American voters "sheep" borders on delusional.
-
I am honored that those who bitch and complain about my posting on these boards are the same people who assert that Obama can be compared to Hitler. And they think they ARE NOT ignorant. Holy Cow.

Hi Obama Ladies!!
I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!! I had friends out from NY since last Tues. They left last night. And I had 30 people over for the big day! I've had a blast and many needed laughs the past week. So..it was great! To many posts to catch up on! I'm going thru them slowly. I did see where they made the announcement today that we are officially in a recession. Hmm...I think we all kind of guessed that. When we took our friends back to the airport on Sunday, it was so quiet!! It was very bizarre.
OK..just checking in. I'll read and post later. Hope everyone is well!

So true, LAphoenix! In fact, had quite a discussion with my neighbor--she humbly stated that although she didn't know all that much about building autos or how to make a hybrid; she thought that 30 years ago the American auto manufacturers were given a "soft" mandate that we needed to get rid of our dependency on foreign oil. For heaven's sake--if my neighbor and I got that message 30 years ago--what have these CEOs been doing all that time? It's utterly ridiculous that these guys never got the message--and in the past few years they've been told blatantly and still didn't work on it. If I did my job that way, when I was working--I'd have been fired by now!! And what bean counter decided that it was a good idea to give tax breaks to American manufacturing companies so they could take away all the manufacturing jobs in the USA??? Huh? Oh, if only women ran the world!! What a difference there would be!! As my neighbor laughed and remarked, "Well, I'm sure it made a lot of sense to somebody at the time!"
I'm so happy we are going to have a President who surrounds himself with intelligent people who (as he puts it) have very strong opinions!! He is going to get the creme de la creme and make this country so much better.
Recession, is it, now that 2 quarters of losses have passed us by!! DUH!!!!!!!!! We all knew that long before the last 2 quarters.
Really, the 1% upper class people in this country need to step on down to the middle and lower incomes and see how we really live day-to-day in this country. They need a severe wake up call. They haven't a clue! Someone also needs to let them know if they wait to long, they may not be able to find us! LOL
Donna, I think these people honing in on fake birth certificate and/or comparing Obama to Hitler are the ones drinking the koolaid!! Beginning to believe that they will never consider putting the election behind us and unifying to bring about change that improves all of our lives. So sad to see such negativity and nastiness. I really feel sorry for them because they just don't get it. And probably won't even if it was explained to them many times over. Must be the only way they can live--to believe that they are better than others by attacking what they fear. Such a waste of energy.
So glad to have this thread; and able to come here and cheer about our new leader and the changes that will happen.

Interesting post from the "respectful" Republican thread

Thats a comment I read from the other side .... how is this racist? Everybody in the US has to produce a social security card and drivers license or a US passport JUST TO HAVE A JOB. What's so hard about a little more when you are going to be the Pres? Like the passport? And proving he was born here? If there is doubt, root it out ... otherwise it becomes a stinking mess. What is the problem? If my company asked to see mine, I would get it out from my safe and show it. No problem.
He should just shut people up with the proof! Or the cry will continue that he is hiding something.
-
And?? It's true, I have to give my info so why doesn't he?????
And why is "respectful" in quotes ... we aren't over there blasting each other ... it meant that for you guys if you want to come over, come over but like this thread which is Dem ... our thread is Rep and for people who want to post there, to remember that.... which is the same you guys want.
I come over here from time to time, not to debate but like my last comment ... was in agreement.
------Anyway Grace, really, can you explain reasonably, the answers to the questions? And WTH, WHY would you say its racist to ask this? It seems if anyone challenges him .. well its a race issue. What is it with Bush? If you challenge him and you are black? is it racism then????
-
Well, gee, I guess if you ran for prez you wouldn't have to either, right? At least, that appears to be your argument.
guess if he was applying for your job, then he would have to--since he isn't, he doesn't have to.
Amazing what some people will believe.
I chalk it up to simple ignorance.
I don't think anyone really cares about the whole birth certificate thing. Just another little something about nothing.
-
Little-g: Thirty people! Wow.
With everything that's happening--add the India crisis to the mess--why would Obama waste time on something as ridiculous as a birth certificate, especially as Hawaii state officials stated some time ago that they personally inspected the original and declared it legit. He produced the official reproduction--the one we all get for passport and job purposes--and posted it on his website months ago. (And if he didn't have a US passport how could he have traveled all over the world?) Hawaii state law prohibits releasing the original. So what are they claiming is going on? Some "OJ"-type conspiracy? What would satisfy them? And why should anyone take their "concerns" seriously? Their lawsuits have already been tossed out of multiple courts. If he had been born in Kansas would this even be an issue? If his father weren't foreign-born would this be an issue? Why is it an issue? I think that's the question that needs to be answered.
Has anyone read the infamous Team of Rivals or Meachum's book on Jackson? Or any of the new Obama books? I'm trying to select some books for Christmas presents.
-
I think the passport story and birth certificate story are just something that repubs who are still upset about the overwhelming win Baracak had use to justify to themselves that there must be something not right with him. After all...how could he come out of no where and win by as much as he did. They are angry, and need something to go after. Honestly, if there were anything to find out about this, they would have dug it up A LONG time ago! Wouldn't it be nice if they used their energy to get on board with the rest of us now and all work to a goal of getting the US back on track? A passport and birth certificate....give me a break. The world is crumbling around us and this is what some people are focused on? Wow.
-
hilarious! this b.s. birth certificate story that first came out in july has become the koolaid story today.
haha, obama produced a birth certificate then, too bad, the tin foil hat crowd didn't like it, called it a forgery.
the bottom line is this:
obama is a citizen. bush drove us into a ditch.
winger/neocon alert: get ready to moooove over, cause we are driving the bus now; come january 20....
woooooooooooooooooooooohoooooooooooooooo....
happy holidays, obama ladies!

Did anyone else go shopping this past weekend and notice the light crowds (obviously exlcuding the 4 am crowds)? They are saying that black Friday sales increased over last year - it seems hard for me to believe, given my scientific sampling of exactly one mall in Dallas...lol. But seriously, it was more like any typical Saturday at the Galleria.
I did my part to boost the economy, but I am not using credit cards this year (hopefully never again if I can help it!) and will be cutting back a bit.
Then again, what's the use of saving a little cash when our country was duped into electing a secret Muslim-Nazi-Kenyan-Socialist who has an agenda to destroy the country? I mean, in six months we women will be unable to work, and probably we will all be wearing Burkas while our men all become part of a militia to kill 6 million people, right? Yes, that sounds like the agenda of the guy that Michelle married...bwwaaahaaaahhaaa

Here's a nightcap for all my Obama cyber-sisters:
-
Donna, great pic! I'd love a swig of that stuff.
Some jokes from The 12-Step Bush Recovery Program by Gene Stone:
1. Four doctors--from Tel Aviv, Berlin, Moscow and Houston--were touring a new facility in China and started a conversation about the state of medicine in their own countries.
The Israeli doctor said, "Medicine in my country is so advanced that we can take a kidney out of one man, put in another, and have him looking for work in six weeks."
The German doctor said, "That is nothing. We can take a lung out of one person, put it in another, and have him looking for work in four weeks."
The Russian doctor said, "In my country, medicine is so advanced that we can take half a heart out of one person, put it in another, and have them both looking for work in two weeks."
The Texas doctor said, "I win. We recently took a man with no brain, put him in the White House for eight years, and now half the country is looking for work."
2. A guy walked into a bar and said to the bartender, "Isn't that George W. Bush and Colin Powell sitting over there in the corner?" "Yes, that's them," the bartender said.
The guy decided to walk over and say hello. "This is a real honor," he said. "What are you guys doing in here?"
Having had several drinks, Bush's mouth was loose. "We're planning WWIII," he said.
The guy responded, "Really? What's going to happen?"
Bush replied, "Well, we're going back to the Middle East, and this time we're going to kill forty million Iraqis, along with one bicycle repairman."
The guy looked confused. "A bicycle repairman! Why are you going to kill a bicycle repairman?"
Bush turned to Powell and smirked. "See, I told you no one was going to care about the forty million Iraqis!"
3. One day George W. Bush was out jogging and noticed a little boy on the corner with a box. Curious, he ran over to the child and said, "What's in the box, kid?"
The little boy said, "Kittens. My cat just had a whole litter of little kittens."
Bush laughed and said, "What kind of kittens are they?"
"Republicans," the child said.
"That's cute," Bush said, and he ran off.
A couple days later Bush was running with his buddy Dick Cheney and he spied the same boy on the corner with his box. Bush told Dick, "You have to hear what this little boy has to say about his cats," and they both jogged over to the boy.
"Hey kid," said Bush, "tell Dick what kind of kittens you have there."
The boy replied, "They're Democrats."
"Whoa!" George said. "When I came by here the other day, you said they were Republicans. What's up with that?"
"Well," the boy said, "their eyes are open now."

RM- you've been very respectful over here and I've seen a side of you that I really like. I guess I wonder why anyone would think that Obama hasn't produced his birth certificate. In my opinion, caving in to conspiracy theorists don't shut people up, and more than giving money to blackmailers does. This is a one time explanation. As for the race issue, I firmly believe that people can dislike Obama and that have nothing to do with race. I also think people can dislike Obama and it has everything to do with race. There is a third category of people, I believe, who are have subtle race bias that they may not even be aware of. Those folks might take a seat next to a white person they don't know on a bus vs a black person they don't know or unconsciously judge a black person harsher than a white one for similar thoughts or offenses. Just look at the criminal justice system and the types of sentences whites vs. blacks receive. One of my friends did a study for her dissertation showing pictures of blacks and whites with different facial expressions and respondents had to choose from 2 adjectives like "friendly or aloof" "content or angry" etc, Whites consistently gave blacks more unfavorable ratings, where for blacks it was fairly even. To make a very long story a bit longer, advertisers are well versed at subliminal advertising, using buzz words to try to get people to buy their product. When people talk about falsely believing Obama was born in Kenya (which would have made him ineligible to run for president) or or falsely believing he's Mulsim or anything to say he's not one of us, to me that whispers racism to people unconsciously looking for "proof" to confirm their suspicions about the black guy, To call Obama elitist, something white democrats have been accused of for years, that's not because it applies equally across races. There was a 2 minute news blip about people saying McCain wasn't american because he was born in central america, it was quickly debunked by the facts that being born on a military base and/or to US citizens making where he was born a moot point. There weren't full page ads demanding McCain show proof or law suits that continued for months on end. To a lot of whites, it's easier to give the benefit of doubt to a white person and they may not even realize it.

Amy thank you for you direct response ... grace, rather than respond just called me ignorant. I never said I believed this birth cert thing ... I just know, I would photograph it, post it and print it up to shut people up. He is leading the whole country and 1/2 the country is unhappy about it. He does need to do something to get the Republicans on his side or at least able to feel ok about him. Like I said before, I am a Republican but that doesn't mean I don't see a good leader when there is one, I wanted HILLARY... I would have voted for her despite what party I belong to ...
Amy, his mom was a US citizen, I think I still don't understand why people think he wouldn't be one .. no matter where he was born. Even if he was born in Kenya, he would be a natural born citizen. I think that qualifies him, right????
-
RM, the issues revolve around the requirements that if only one parent is a citizen, they must have lived in the US for a specific length of time after the age of 16 in order to automatically confer citizenship on their children born outside of the US. Barak's mother had lived in Hawaii and she was only 18 at the time, not old enough to have spent the 5 years needed to convey that automatic citizenship, so it makes a huge difference if he were born in Kenya as opposed to Hawaii, which had become a state by the time he was born.
The stories of his birth in Kenya are all anectdotal from extended family members, and could be related to issues of translation with words of similar meanings like baby, infant, newborn and born from their native language into English since it is clear that his family visited Kenya while he was still an infant.
-
RM- I've been reading and hearing all kinds of positive things from republicans praising his transition team. Even Rush Limbug said something that wasn't nasty about it. I don't think 50% of the country is against Obama. I think 10% are against him and the rest either support him or are taking a wait and see attitude, hoping that he does well for the country, because we really need it. I've been really impressed by the republicans who aren't the numbnuts concerned about whether Obama is a citizen or overt racists who say things like, "i'd never vote for a person who's black or with that name." I think most republicans (not necessarily represented on this board) are appalled at calls for his birth certificate just like most democrats don't believe Bush should be tried as a war criminal (the fringe of both sides).
PM-What are you smoking? Ann Dunham-Obama lived in the Kansas, then seattle until after she graduated from high school. Please get your facts straight before speading any more misinformation on this thread.
-
Actually, Amy, I have an acquaintance, not a friend, who actually said that ... she refused to vote because 1) she would never vote for a black man and 2) didn't like McCain.
I thought, well people like that should never vote ... I didn't vote for him either but race was not the issue ... if you cannot see past the color of skin in an election, then you shouldn't be voting. Has anybody ever read the book, "The Color of the Law" ....??? great book, fiction, but great book.
Hawaii became a state in 1959, before BO was born, so being born in Hawaii, which before that was a US territory, would have qualified ... besides, she was a NATURAL born citizen. He could have been born anywhere and still be a citizen?
-
So sorry, I knew that the family had moved to Hawaii, and hadn't thoroughly researched the exact dates involved. Please forgive me for not knowing every detail of his mother's life including dates. I've edited the original post to correct that.
That said, why do you feel the need to attack me, and accuse me of smoking something?
-
Obama's original Hawaii birth certificate was verified as genuine by state officials in early October. Courts around the country have thrown out lawsuits contesting his citizenship. So even if the question had any legitimacy at the start, his mother's status and anecdotes are moot points now, and have been moot for some time.
Amy, I think you're right that most Americans are, if not behind Obama, then are doing a wait-and-see. Given how centrist his cabinet picks have been so far, I don't see how anyone could legitimately accuse him of extremism. I'm a little concerned about Jones as NSA myself, as he's on a Chevron-sponsored board that has questioned global warming. He won't be directly involved in environmental issues, but energy resources come into play when considering national interests.
Glad to see the Ford CEO has accepted a $1 a year salary. I wonder how much that will save the company right there.
-
And Ford is selling their corporate jets!
To me, if they are getting a loan, I want to see them as I see myself: do all you can do on your own to cut back before putting your hand out. Me and my daughter have gotten rid of the housekeeper, cut the garderner's work in 1/2 and his bill, cut the grocery bill by 3/4, no going out except to free things like the park which she loves, once a month out to dinner using up our gift cards (no ordering dessert or alcohol), totally watch the light bill, blankets instead of heater and did not turn on the air at all this summer! Cut the water bill by 25% by monitoring the sprinklers, shopping at 99 Cent stores and got our winter coats at the Goodwill. That alone saved $100! Two coats cost $18 .. $4 for hers and $14 for mine ... they were a steal.
-
Excellent ideas for saving $$, Rock. Those bits and pieces add up. I've become even more obsessed with turning lights out than before. And not using the drying cycle on the dishwasher, which is a big energy user. I use a space heater instead of turning on the central heat, although until recently, it was so hot in LA we didn't need any heat. I heard people are using their credit cards less too, paying instead with cash or bank cards.
-
RM- I hate knowing that there are people like your acquaintence. I almost wonder what's more disgusting, people who will blatantly say something like that or those who think it, but know better than to say it. I guess it's less damaging to have the bigotry out there than to hide it and pretend everything is cool. I have no problem with people who voted for McCain on policy based on rational unbiased study of the issues. I do however have a problem with everyone who voted YES on prop 8, but that's a whole other discussion
.
-
LA .. we live in Riverside County, so its been hot here, as you know!! At night and early in the morning, we've had some chill. But last year we managed to keep the heater off ... I think a few mornings last year I turned the heat on for an hour so my dd didn't feel the chill ... 1st graders can be cranky about getting out of bed. This year though, I named her Light Monitor after she got her b-day present (the Wii) and increased allowance to $5 a week on the condition that: a) she buys all her own games unless it's a birthday/holiday gift, that she cannot ask me to buy any toys/games b) she folds her laundry and puts it away (I usually fold most of it) and c) she helps clean the kitchen, makes her bed and keeps her room clean ... She is 7 now so I think she can handle that.
The budget is hard on me but it has been good for her ... I am spending more time teaching her how to clean and be responsible for ourselves instead of paying to get it done. She loves to mop. She loves to garden and trim in the backyard (not the clean up part but she is loving jumping in the green debris can to compact our clippings). It's a good lesson for her to shop and save at Goodwill and clip coupons. She got all ticked at my dad when he wanted to buy Halloween candy!!! She told him that he could buy bread, milk and eggs for the same price and last all week instead of one night!
-
I got a good laugh over the jokes posted! :-) As far as the birth certificate thing, I can't remember when any other president displayed his birth certificate for the public before running for office? If they did, the media never went after it, so why now? I disagree that 1/2 of the US is not in favor of Obama. He had an overwhelming win, and also in popular poles. I don't think he needs to prove himself to the skeptical "half" because in my opinion he is here to run our country and clean up the mess of the last eight years. And I think that no matter what good things he does, that "half" is always going to have an issue with him.
g
-
Little g ... almost half of the popular vote went to McCain ... Over 40% maybe 46-48%??? The overwhelming win was in the electoral votes. If you win the state by even 1 vote, you win 100% of their electoral votes so the electoral vote is not representative of the actual votes. Thats why we are called a republic not a true democracy.
I didn't say he has to prove himself to the other 1/2 but he even said he has to gain the trust of the ones that didn't vote for him if he is going to unite the country. I think that he is doing a lot more to unite the country by his choices in gov't than some of his supporters are. He reaches out where some supporters don't ... they just want the republicans to "shut up and get over it"
