    And have you seen the woman who's going to be the new WH social secretary, Desiree Rogers?  She's really gorgeous!  And she has an MBA from Harvard!

    donna, donna, donna- will you never learn? The sensible republicans probably run screaming from the inane rantings over there. We know there are extremists in this country, but we don't have to subject ourselves to seeking them out.Wink

    Obama's Use of Complete Sentences Stirs Controversy
    Stunning Break with Last Eight Years

    In the first two weeks since the election, President-elect Barack Obama has broken with a tradition established over the past eight years through his controversial use of complete sentences, political observers say.

    Millions of Americans who watched Mr. Obama's appearance on CBS' "Sixty Minutes" on Sunday witnessed the president-elect's unorthodox verbal tick, which had Mr. Obama employing grammatically correct sentences virtually every time he opened his mouth.

    But Mr. Obama's decision to use complete sentences in his public pronouncements carries with it certain risks, since after the last eight years many Americans may find his odd speaking style jarring.

    According to presidential historian Davis Logsdon of the University of Minnesota, some Americans might find it "alienating" to have a President who speaks English as if it were his first language.

    "Every time Obama opens his mouth, his subjects and verbs are in agreement," says Mr. Logsdon.  "If he keeps it up, he is running the risk of sounding like an elitist."

    The historian said that if Mr. Obama insists on using complete sentences in his speeches, the public may find itself saying, "Okay, subject, predicate, subject predicate - we get it, stop showing off."

    The President-elect's stubborn insistence on using complete sentences has already attracted a rebuke from one of his harshest critics, Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska. "Talking with complete sentences there and also too talking in a way that ordinary Americans like Joe the Plumber and Tito the Builder can't really do there, I think needing to do that isn't tapping into what Americans are needing also," she said.

    Felicia--Hilarious!! I almost p--d my pants. I love his complete sentences--so easy to understand. Not like the current president, who appears to have had trouble with his public speaking class!

    Wonder how long it takes the palin crowd to figure out what she's saying, and when they do, don't they find what she thinks of them--her fans--ahhhh--like dumb, uneducated, beer drinking, average c folk? How embarrassing to have a VP candidate come across as elitist--and a republican to boot!

    Donna--I'm glad you retracted your claws--I haven't had my tetanus shot update yet! LOL It really is hard to believe that these are real people. I'm beginning to think they made up these personas and are just trying them out on this board. Really, there are people who think like they do? Good thing they aren't the majority.Wink

    So, somebody clue me in. I have been channel surfing and can't find anywhere that Clinton has said yes yet. Is that true?

    Oh, and Donna--we need a little more excitement--please, please post that on the republican thread. I have so much fun laughing over their comments. Don't be a spoil sport now. LOLCool

    Did anyone notice that the only responders so far to the new not so nice political thread are all from this thread? Hysterical!! I couldn't resist responding. Someone's trying to stir things up.Surprised

    Hey guys,

    If you want some action go over to Robert Reich's blog.  He may be Clinton's former labor secretary and have a little sense about things, but his bloggers are IDIOTS!!! I was posting over there all day today and I wasn't impressed with the kind of comments people were making...AT ALL...you know, we ladies have a lot more sense than we give ourselves credit for.

    laura- great news about the investigation.  Churches aren't allowed to be political or they risk losing their tax exempt status. These rules are continually broken.

    felicia- thanks for the laughs. Those complete sentences will really get their bees up in a bonnet.

    djd- it's hard not to let the worst of the crap get to me too. Isn't religion supposed to be about love, not hate?

    I'd like to hear some comment about the financial team Obama is putting together.  I'm afraid I just am not well-read enough about their individual histories to judge.  But I did hear a call-in comment on Diane Reem this morning from an Obama campaigner who said she is very, very disappointed.

    Even though I'm very liberal and more to the left of Obama's team, I like the team he's putting together. I like that he's mixing some of the old Bill Clinton folks with fresh faces and that he's drawing from people from government, wall street, banking and academia. I know that the very left are disappointed that there are moderates among the choices, but I admire that Obama wants to have different voices. He knows that the whole economy is in shambles and we need the left, right and center to be on board or this could get even uglier.  I'm not familiar with all of the members on his team, but the ones I am called for stricter regulations and sounded warning bells early. I like that Obama is being transparent because that's what we need to build trust.

    I wish Obama would be more specific about what we as individuals can do to help. I think most of us want to conserve our resources in case things get worse, but does that cause things to get worse and is there a middle of the road, etc.

    Did the campaigner say why she was disappointed?

    Felicia -

    That "Borowitz Report" is very funny.  It reminds me of an old Jeff Foxworthy bit about NASCAR.   He said the reason that so many fans hated Jeff Gordon was because he "e-nun-ci-ates" and "fans don't want to understand a word coming out of their driver's mouth."  Of course, if you are not familiar with NASCAR, that joke might not be as funny as it was to me!

    Amy, I was between errands so only heard snatches of the show.  I think that Obama has really been "out there" as far as taking the reins of the presidency before being sworn in.  I'm glad because it shows that he understands that a lot could get worse in the next 57 days.  But, I don't think we will hear about specific individual efforts we can make until he is actually president.

    Jaybird - We are all coming from so many different "places" it would be odd if we didn't all have our occasional disagreements, wouldn't it!

    Brenda - I liked what I heard Obama say today, that he is assembling a team of experts because,  in this disastrous economy, his administration doesn't have the time or luxury to "stumble into the job".

    analemma =

    The stock market had the biggest two- day rally since 1987 after Obama picked New York Federal Reserve Bank chief Geithner as Treasury secretary.

    His daily press conferences this week have helped to sooth the uncertainty in the markets and he will have another tomorrow.

    Bush checked out before Obama checked in, during the worst economic climate this country has known since the depression. waaay before my time.Wink

    Paulson, who Bush left with the keys to the bank, has done NOTHING to make anything look cohesive. He clearly does not have a plan that is not changing daily.

    That is what i see from my backyard...Laughing

    Just desserts for Ann Coulter, huh...The payback is a real biatch for sure!

    57 days until Mission Accomplished...weeeeeeeeeeeee!

    "Everything that President-elect Obama has done since election night has been just about perfect, both in terms of a tone and also in terms of the strength of the names that have either been announced or are being discussed to fill his administration," Lieberman said during a visit to Hartford.

    Madalyn,

    Pass the bleach bottle when you are done, please!!! EWWWWWWWWWWWWWW us all I have to add.

    I understand Obama is keeping the same defense secretary Bush has right now? Keep your enemies closer? Or does it mean that if Congress already okayed some of these people, he won't go through a prolonged process, and can truly run with the job the first day? Interesting.

    ana- I somehow doubt the caller was a real campaign staffer. I've heard both democrats and republicans praising Obama's leadership in reassuring the country that he's ready to go with his team on day one. The Bush team has done a horrible job with that. Paulson appears to be grossly mismanaging the bailout money and there is absolutely no transparency into how he's making his decision. This, I believe, not only angers people, but also scares them, Most folks don't know enough about economics to intelligently follow what they're being told, heck even economists are befuddled. That's my take!

    grace- I think there are several reasons Obama's keeping Gates. 1) With all the problems economically, it's good to have someone in the job who already knows what he's doing for continuity, 2) Obama has made it very clear that he sets the agenda, 3) My understanding is that Gates has done a fairly good job cleaning things up  and that he agrees with beginning to withdraw the troops.

    Florida Gay Adoption Ban Is Ruled Unconstitutional http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/26/us/26florida.html

    By YOLANNE ALMANZAR Published: November 25, 2008

    MIAMI - A Florida law that has banned adoptions by gay men and lesbians for over three decades is unconstitutional, a judge here ruled on Tuesday.

    "The best interests of children are not preserved by prohibiting homosexual adoption," the judge, Cindy S. Lederman of Miami-Dade Circuit Court, said in a 53-page decision. She said the law violated equal protection rights for children and their prospective parents.

    A spokeswoman for the attorney general's office said the state would appeal, and the case is likely to end up before the State Supreme Court.

    Florida is the only state with a law prohibiting gay men and lesbians - couples and individuals - from adopting children. The Legislature voted to prohibit adoptions by gay men and lesbians in 1977, in the midst of a campaign led by the entertainer Anita Bryant to repeal a gay rights ordinance adopted by Dade County.

    In 2005, the United States Supreme Court refused to hear a challenge to the Florida law.

    Some states, like Mississippi and Utah, effectively bar adoptions by same-sex couples through laws that prohibit adoption by unmarried couples. Arkansas voters passed a similar measure this month.

    The ruling on Tuesday will allow Frank Martin Gill, 47, a gay man from North Miami, to adopt two foster children whom he has raised since 2004. "Our family just got a lot more to be thankful for this Thanksgiving," Mr. Gill said in a news release issued by the American Civil Liberties Union, which represented him.

    Robert Rosenwald, director of the LGBT Advocacy Project of the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida and one of the lawyers on the case, said, "The case means that these two boys won't be torn from the only home that they've ever known," said.

    The state presented experts who argued that there was a higher incidence of drug and alcohol abuse among same-sex couples, that their relationships were less stable than those of heterosexuals, and that their children suffered a societal stigma.

    But lawyers for Mr. Gill presented evidence contradicting those contentions, which Judge Lederman found persuasive.

    "It is clear that sexual orientation is not a predictor of a person's ability to parent," she wrote.

    Mr. Rosenwald called the decision a huge victory for gay and lesbian parents and for almost 1,000 children in Florida waiting to be adopted.

    "The court for the first time after hearing all of the evidence determined that the scientific evidence is crystal clear," he said. "There is no dispute that children raised by gay parents fare just as well or better than children raised by straight parents."

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I'm thrillled but also frustrated that there had to be such a ruling in the first place. There are so many children who are going to benefit from this ruling and couples who will be able to complete their families.
    thanks for the tip mo!
