It's really crap that due to right-wing brainwashing over the past 30 years and the proliferation of misinformation in the social media age that we can't even have a thread about the pandemic b/c too many people get into their feelings when they are told by other's that their "beliefs" rooted in misinformation found on fox/oann/podcasts are shit.

Oh thank goodness for Florida. Now if we can have the judicial outcome in Texas.
-
Spookie,
I just read that article and I am beyond pleased. It is too early to see if sanity is returning to Florida (or as close as Florida ever comes to sanity) but I am happy the children will not have to pay the price. Now, to just get their superintendents & principals on board.

my DD is a teacher here. She says her superintendent won't do it. as he's in DeathSantis pocket. But it’s still nice to see him shot down.
-
Well, that didn't last long--three days after I found the COVID thread, the Mods shut it down. One person ("runor") posted that the pandemic was exaggerated and nobody should expect people with "one foot in the grave anyway" to "live another 100 years." It wasn't her post that killed the thread (it was removed fairly quickly and she quit anyway), but rather the justified blistering reactions from senior citizens and Stage IV patients (with some overlap). Even Beesie, who is one of the most knowledgeable posters ever about the science of breast cancer, felt discouraged enough by COVIDiot posts that she contemplated leaving BCO.
There's a nurse on another (apolitical) thread who, though vaccinated and pro-mask, today lamented the imminent closing of a nursing home in her state--claiming that the exodus of nurses is due to vaccine mandates. When I told her that they ought to know better (and held my tongue rather than say that perhaps the profession is better off without them), she shot back that many of them are vaccinated too but are afraid that the state vaccine mandate for health workers would "set a precedent" for "other mandates that would violate their right to body autonomy." Quitting one's essential job as a protest, out of a baseless ideological fear, is like starving oneself to protest bans on adulterated foods, because it would "set a precedent" for bans on one's autonomy to poison oneself. And where is that right-wing libertarian outcry over precious "body autonomy" when it comes to uteruses?
It is soooo tempting to wish death upon the anti-vaxers and right-wing-nutjob pols & pundits/podcasters who got COVID. Schadenfreude is powerful. But (especially during these 10 days of penitence) it's a sin, because karma is a bitch.
I think that another reason so many of my fellow creative artists are especially enamored of alterna-woo is that even having special and prodigious talents is not necessarily self-satisfactory enough to set them apart (or above), but rather requires them to completely noncomform in other areas lest they lose their specialness. (Sort of like practicing a secret handshake). The irony, of course, is that requiring noncomformity is itself a type of conformity! (Taking pride in being the "black sheep" doesn't mean they don't belong to a flock thereof. If it bleats like a sheep...baaaaa humbug).

sandy,
The op asked for the mods to lock the thread and so they did. OP responded with her feelings regarding the thread locking in the Steam Room thread. The response was in all caps and heavily expletive laced and was, predictably, deleted. I read it before the deletion and must say that I was impressed by how a sentence could be constructed with so many iterations of fu*k! It has long been somewhat controversial about whether the mods should delete/lock threads at the op’s request. It’s a shame because the thread in question did contain some good discussion. I wish it had been left up. Ah well, time for this stage IV senior citizen to continue living.

CNN)Thirteen school employees from Miami-Dade County Public Schools have died from Covid-19 since August 16, the school district and local teacher union told CNN on Tuesday.
Among the 13 were four teachers, one security monitor, one cafeteria worker and seven school bus drivers, United Teachers of Dade President Karla Hernandez-Mats said. All were unvaccinated.
"These were extraordinary educators and people, and their loss is being felt throughout the community," Hernandez-Mats said.
The school district's Covid-19 dashboard keeps track of cases, but not deaths. A spokesperson told CNN they were aware of the 13 deaths anecdotally and through family members who reported them.
"The loss of any of our employees is one that is always profoundly felt as every member of this organization is considered a part of Miami-Dade County Public Schools family," the district said in a statement. "We extend our hearts and prayers to the loved ones of those whose lives have recently been lost."
According to the district's dashboard, 147 students and 186 employees have tested positive for Covid-19 since August 13, when the dashboard started tracking cases for the school year.
School started in Miami-Dade on August 23.
Miami-Dade is the largest school district in the state and one of a handful there that has enacted a mask mandate in defiance of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
Hope after pop-up vaccination site opens
To honor those the district lost, Hernandez-Mats helped coordinate a pop-up vaccination site for Miami-Dade employees Tuesday. Just a few hours into the event, 40 people had come to receive their first shot, she said. While that number may not seem large, she said it gives her hope.
"All that misinformation is creating a lot of fear and this is an underserved community," Hernandez-Mats said. "We looked at the data that we got from the department of health here in the county and basically what it told us was that 30% of the African American community is vaccinated, and that's way below our averages here."
The 13 employees who died were African American, she said.
The pop-up site will be running a second time in a few weeks to give out the second dose of the vaccine.
"We're really hopeful and we're pleased," she said.
District wants to incentivize people to get vaccinated
The Miami-Dade school district will be presenting an item to the school board this week "calling for a one-time $275 stipend to any full-time & permanent part-time employee who provides proof of full vaccination," a spokesperson from the district said.
The district also said 85% of its teachers have received at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine, based on a survey conducted by the United Teachers of Dade.

I think the Trumpster anti-vaxers are pretty much a lost cause (unless they are forced into vaccinations to keep their jobs, attend events etc.), but I surely wish that there was a better outreach to minority communities (who have good reasons to mistrust the government).

I started a new Covid19 rant thread. It's in active topics (for now). I won't ask for it to be deleted, nor will I try to moderate it. I'll let the moderators do that.
It's called "How has the Pandemic affected your life as a current/former cancer patient?". Deliberately bland to stay under the radar. I hope we can keep the topic going so we can keep our rants off the Steam Room page.

People only begin to grow when they cease to whine and revile, and commence to search for the hidden justice which regulates their lives. And as they adapt their minds to that regulating factor, they cease to accuse others as the cause of their condition, and build themselves up in strong and noble thoughts. They cease to kick against circumstances, but begin to use them as aids to their more rapid progress, and as a means of discovering the hidden powers and possibilities within themselves. -James Allen

Just wow !! I don't get on those other threads. I'm far too opinionated. I am though flexible Obviously most of the covidiots are not even close to any flexibility. I'm thinking/hoping for ultimate failure for much ( masks, vaccines, abortion laws ) of what the Reps. are and have been up too. I did read ( Raw Story ?? ) that even though we aren't seeing much right now, that DOJ/Garland is working to get the Texas abortion law done away with. It all takes a bit of time. Thank goodness for the FLA judge. I will never understand ANYONE who could put their children at risk or allow others to do it. The brainwashing is horrendous if you are that far down the hole.

Thanks, Trish! Will go over there and tell my story about how the pandemic might kill me without giving me COVID.
I'm surprised that Garland's complaint doesn't cite the one thing that can shoot down the TX abortion law: the vigilantes' lack of standing to sue. The law's civil suit bounties fly in the face of centuries of established tort law. (People forget that while Marbury v. Madison established judicial review of a law's or court decision's constitutionality, it didn't make it SCOTUS' only function).
It is well estsblished that "for every injury there is a remedy." But the converse is not "for every remedy there is an injury," but that "for every remedy, there must have been an injury." What exactly is the "injury" for which the plaintiffs are to be awarded $10k in damages? Moral outrage? Nope. A state cannot create a cause of action that conflicts with existing common law. How exactly is the plaintiff harmed by the defendants' conduct here? And enabling out-of-staters, who have never met nor had contact ("logical nexus") in any way with the potential defendant, to claim "injury" is completely absurd. The plaintiffs lack standing to sue for a nonexistent injury. Another Constitutional disqualification of a statute is "void for vagueness."
The only possible cause of action is intentional infliction of emotional distress. But proving that requires that that defendant intended to cause that plaintiff emotional distress--and the geographical distance and the lack of any relationship between plaintiff & fetus puts the kibosh on that. And there is no tort of "negligent infliction of emotional distress," either. Heck, you can't even sue someone for harming your next-door neighbor, nor a friend with whom you did not have legal sexual "consortium." The most evil and outrageous result of this law would allow a rapist to collect a $10,000 bounty against anyone who helps his victim end the pregnancy he feloniously created by raping her--same thing with a father regarding his daughter's incest-caused pregnancy. Anyway, good luck finding juries unanimously willing to award that bounty (and if they can, making that verdict stick).

Oh, the comfort, the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person; having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words, but to pour them all out, chaff and grain together, knowing that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keep what is worth keeping, and then, with the breath of kindness, blow the rest away. -George Eliot

Amazing things going on and much push-back. Pres. Biden I hope in the end will be understood. The Reps. are ( so many of them vac'ced themselves ) keeping us in a dangerous state where bigger and stronger variants can take hold -- and we will be in a forever covid hell. It is a risk, but I think the majority of us want the security of not adding to our miseries. Hard to tell which program people are on....just thumbing their nose to do it and be a "good" Reps. and who are in the deep recesses of their perceived conspiracy. Once again as almost always when they have been in power for awhile, the Democrats have to come in and save the Reps. from themselves. Afterwards they will find a way to make it appear they actually saved themselves. SIGH!!!

Wow, that is a powerful illustration.
Love the Eliot quote!

Sadly this has been true and very true since the orange other guy:

-
Yes, yes, yes. I did wonder about the telecom companies and glad to see this.
-
Said by the kind of person that calls all of us snowflakes:
-
The truth is so close to the Reps. they can't see it for the trees.
-
Loved the drumpfs claim that if Lee had been in charge of our present day army, we would have won the war in Afghanistan. Does he realize that Lee was on the losing side for the Civil War? What an idiot.

-
Likely doesn't need much explanation that this is the way that orange thing 'considers' events. All are used in some way for his personal enhancement. I know all of you are aware that in honor of and in memorial to this now 20 yr. old occurrence he will be ringside for a boxing match providing comment. I can't imagine this much either. I presume he could not let an opportunity to be a part of the day go by, but it is the only venue ( quite fitting ) where he could inject himself. His handlers should be beside themselves but no mater how they see things, they don't always talk the loon out of what he 'wants' to do to be seen and heard.
Just as all of you, I will not be seeing and hearing him. I do think he continues to bring dishonor to the Reps. party and so far is doing much to disrupt the possibilities they were hoping for in 2022.

From: Garland connects all the dots for Supreme Court on precedent in Texas abortion ban suit
... "The statute deputizes all private citizens—without any showing of personal connection or injury—to serve as bounty hunters, authorized to recover at least $10,000 per claim from individuals who facilitate a woman's exercise of her constitutional rights," Garland said. "This kind of scheme to nullify the Constitution of the United States is one that all Americans—whatever their politics or party—should fear. If it prevails, it may become a model for action in other areas, by other states, and with respect to other constitutional rights and judicial precedents."
If Texas wants to deputize private citizens to police people for abortion, can other states deputize private citizens as bounty hunters to report people (including cops) for discrimination and hate-crime? That would be interesting to try out.
