Yeah, I kinda figured anyone posting on the Covid19 Rant thread was more likely to be progressive than not.
Plus I have seen interlopers dispatched quite quickly by this group. I'm not too worried about that.
-
While I don't post often, this thread is for certain a sanity saver for me. I really appreciate the well thought out posts, hilarious memes, and Illinoislady's quotes. Thank you all.
-
Now that I'm here, I may get my sanity back.
Who am I kidding, that ship sailed long ago.
I'm afraid to post this on the Covid thread as it might be too incendiary, but I hope it will be appreciated here.

(I have never not had a crush on Bradley Whitford). -
From one spitter to ( had to add that work to my dictionary ) another. Yes, this is the place to hold onto some of your marbles so they don't roll around and crash into one another. In my imagination I'd long ago have been senseless and drooling on myself w/o this place. Most here know I am a big contributor most of the time. It is not brilliance, but more due to coming to threads to leave quotes. Since I am here (and if one of those days my brain kicks in at least a little bit ) I figure I might as find other things that speak ( almost never whisper ) to me. I am glad for those who have found our thread and hope all of you too will find that you can at times ease your angst over the world we have been thrust into the last few yrs. It has been a huge bummers but we are hanging on.

Divine. loved your piece. Much like the J. Pavolitz ( sp. ) post. To all those who are characterized by both posts -- may every camel flea there is find you and stick with you most heartily.
-
Just to be clear, a part of me hates putting these in here because of the great Texans we have here, but it is what it is.
-
If they had to apply the same rules to guns, boy howdy they'd be looking at things much differently I'd wager.
-
Just to be fair and note their is some sanity in TX. I do wish there were more.
-
Covid, you have a job to do:
-
-
The SC and others are going to get a taste of just how many people they have pissed off majorly.
-
This is just for fun, but if this meme gets around too much. I would not be surprised if some of the same people trying horse dewormer will do their best to get ahold of some kind of snake venom.
-
Don't we hope something fertile happens here:
-
Last one for now.
-
I've been referring to that Georgia peanut brain as Marjorie Soylent Greene. Why are the stupidest right-wingers the most obnoxiously over-confident?
-
JKL - you are right. Saying the USSC slept through the Texas legislation was a bad choice of words. It seems like it is a clear nod to Texas, not to worry if lawsuits make it to the USSC, they are more than ready to gut Roe V Wade and voting rights as well. I grew up thinking that the USSC judges were very wise in interpreting the Constitution. It took a long time to understand that they are as political as any other branch of the government. And it is getting worse. Maybe we can inundate Texas Courts with lawsuits accusing those who wrote and passed this law.

Huffington Post:
Satanic Temple Floats Devilishly Clever Strategy To Dodge Texas Abortion Law
"We will not be cowed into silence by an unjust law," declared the temple, which links reproductive freedom to religious freedom. By Mary PapenfusThe always-thinking Satanic Temple has an intriguing strategy for women to escape the draconian restrictions of the new Texas abortion law: take an abortion-inducing drug as an expression of religious freedom in a faith-based rite.
A lawyer for the Massachusetts-based temple sent a letter to the Food and Drug Administration earlier this week to request that the church be allowed access without prescription to the abortion-inducing drugs mifepristone and misoprostol as part of its "sacramental" abortion ritual. He compared employing the drugs to the use of peyote in certain Native American rituals allowed under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act.
For the temple, bodily autonomy and science are sacrosanct, and the abortion ritual is an important expression of those beliefs, explained temple co-founder Lucien Greaves.
"The battle for abortion rights is largely a battle of competing religious viewpoints, and our viewpoint that the nonviable fetus is part of the impregnated host is fortunately protected under Religious Liberty," he added in a statement.
The temple website features a message to Texans seeking a way around the new state law that bans abortion after just six weeks, before most people even know they're pregnant. The Supreme Court voted 5-4 Wednesday not to immediately block the law, which erodes constitutionally protected rights detailed almost a half-century ago in Roe v. Wade.
"The Satanic Temple stands ready to assist any member that shares its deeply-held religious convictions regarding the right to reproductive freedom," the organization noted on its website.
"Accordingly, we encourage any member who resides in Texas and wishes to undergo the Satanic Abortion Ritual within the first 24 weeks of pregnancy to contact The Satanic Temple so we may help them fight this law directly," it added.
The temple defiantly concluded: "We will not be cowed into silence by an unjust law or a tyrannical state government."
The group would do everything necessary to assure the administration of the medication is safe, the temple lawyer assured the FDA, including a medical examination to determine that there are no "contraindications" to taking the drug.
The temple — which defines itself as "nontheistic" and its mission as confronting religious discrimination to "secure the separation of church and state and defend the Constitutional rights of its members" — is one of a number of actors emerging to battle the new abortion law, the most restrictive in the nation.
A TikTok activist has come up with a way to use bots to overwhelm a reporting system targeting women getting abortions in Texas.
The CEO of the Dallas-based Match dating-app company is establishing a fund for Texas workers who need to leave the state for an abortion. And Austin-based Bumble is funding six organizations fighting for reproductive rights.

I'm thinking for some in TX who had such big smiles when Abbott signed that law there may be as well some regrets, even if they never let us see them frown. Sounds like they are going to get plenty of push back -- and this will be front and center at election time. Going to be interesting.
-
Is there a word that means even more draconian than draconian? When I first heard about rewards for turning in people who have violated that law in TX, I really thought I had misheard.
-
Medieval? Psychopathic? Intentionally cruel and depraved? Satanic? Just a few off the top of my head.
I'm planning to take part in the Million Women March on October 2nd. I've already planned my sign. It will be a drawing of a teenager, barefoot, pregnant and begging on the streets. The caption? "This is your daughter's and grand daughter's future under Republicans. Choose wisely"
The sad thing is that there's not a bit of hyperbole about it. It is depressingly true.

John Roberts Has Lost Control of the Supreme Court
Posted: 03 Sep 2021 08:04 PM PDT
Joan Biskupic: The Supreme Court's dramatic 5-4 action leaving a Texas abortion ban in place at midnight Wednesday establishes that the Roberts Court no longer is Roberts' Court. -
I have a few friends who do the NaNoWriMo challenge. I once proposed a writing prompt for them.
First, imagine an anti-abortion, anti-birth control, anti-social welfare, tough-on-crime, pro-death penalty society. With no reproductive services, birth rates will rise especially among low-income populations. Once the baby is born, if no social welfare programs are in place, a lower-income mother or family is on their own for very limited resources. Driven by financial desperation, many families in this situation will turn to crime to cover their most basic needs, and self-destructive lifestyles to dull the pain. They get caught, sent to jail, and potentially executed.
Now assume the classic judeo-christian idea of Heaven and Hell vying for souls like currency. Which side is more likely to benefit from a system that brings lots of excess souls into the world; thrusts these new souls into an environment where they have few protections from sins of vice, and will be highly vulnerable to sins of temptation; then, when the soul is deeply steeped in sin, separates the soul from society and culls it before it can repent and find redemption? Which side, Heaven or Hell, is more likely to back politicians and other leaders who support these policies?
Now look at our current socio-political structure. Having fun yet?

Interesting thoughts.

It's wild to me how when I talk with anyone who is against masks and vaccines how via what they say I so quickly I recognized their talking points. Everyone I know personally, (except one) who has not taken the vaccine and doesn't wear a mask unless they really really really have to also watching Fox "News" or listens to right-wing radio. I am very glad my right-wing BIL listened to his wife and kids and did get the vaccine--though it took a few months.
