Not much time but I do want to say how much I have been agreeing with Mr. Pavvolitz. I do think ( thinking Sister Chittisser here ) a couple of people have definitely thought through things while keeping it separate from the political spectrum. I am reading this a.m. that much of this won't bode so well perhaps for the Reps. and their party in 2022. Well, so much happens who can say and likely we will have to get UP to mid-term election time.
It does sound though like much could happen as well to Kevin McCarthy who is not the best and brightest by far, and it also sounds like the orange thing is going to be a negative factor as well. I need to see more but I mention this as I was feeling the pressure the past few days and I'm doing my best to look further and not let myself get caught up in too much negativity. I want to try always to bring light, hope and truth to things and not succumb to the little part we all have that just might weigh us down too much. I want to always have a picture of success -- likely not as much or as big as I'd like, but there just the same.

John Pavlovitz hit the proverbial nail on the head in his article. Sad commentary about conservative christian beliefs isn't it? Angst over the embryo but deny the born child any basic human rights to minimal caring. The protests in TX aimed at this bill seem to be gaining momentum and are exposing the hypocrisy of the repugnicans. Perhaps they tides can shift if they continue to deny voting rights, reproductive rights and basic human rights? We just need to keep pointing out their travesties of justice.

Bounty Hunting history in the US leads to bounties on pregnant women
The Dutch governor of Manhattan, Willem Kieft, offered the first bounty in North America for Indian scalps in 1641, only 21 years after the Puritans landed at Plymouth Rock. The Massachusetts Bay Colony first offered $60 per Indian scalp in 1703.
1900
And in other cases, the whole body was brought in to prove that they had this individual, they'd killed this person, and receive their reward. And it was well after 1900 when the law was repealed, that bounty hunting, or whatever you may want to call it, on the California Indians was repealed.
In Colonial America slave catchers were citizens paid to hunt and paid for capturing runaway enslaved people
2021 Texas will pay $10,000 for a woman attempting an abortion after 6 weeks of pregnancy
Texas, is upholding a very despicable American tradition.

In TX, it's illegal to force a 12-yr-old to wear a mask (and her older siblings to get vaccinated), but it's perfectly legal--required, in fact--to force that 12-yr-old to bear her uncle's or father's baby.
John Roberts joined the dissent from the majority opinion that refused to stay the abortion-bounty statute while it wends its way through the lower courts. I think the statute is unconstitutional--not only does it grant state law "standing" to those outside its borders, those whom it enables to bring suit also have no standing, because they have not suffered a compensable "injury." Moral outrage is not a compensable injury. You can't even sue for grief over the death of a friend--much less a the death of a stranger's fetus (even an unimplanted clump of cells).
Not just that, the statute doesn't differentiate between an abortion performed to end a pregnancy and one to remove tissues remaining in place to fester after an incomplete miscarriage (such as the D&C I had to have to finish the miscarriage of a blighted ovum). It fails to distinguish between a fetus, embryo, clump of cells tha have yet to implant, and even a blighted ovum.
And don't even get me started on the fact that if the suit is dismissed--even if it turns out the woman was less than 6 weeks pregnant--the provider and "abetter" cannot recover the attorneys' fees it took to defeat the suit.

I have no problem with a mandatory law for Repugnicans having a vasectomy. Would keep them from reproducing their evil spawn. You can start with some of the males on the SC that have had issues raised about their sexual prowess against females disclosed to the public.

Betrayal, glad for the company and in other news:
Pro-Choice People Paralyze Texas Abortion Tip Line With Thousands Of Fake Reports
Texas's anonymous tip line where people who receive or assist an abortion can be reported has been hammered with pro-choice fake reports.

Serves Abbott and the rat squad right. I hope the line continues to crash.

The single most empowering thing we can do for ourselves is to transform fear. While fear contains tremendous power, it doesn't propel us forward and upward, but, rather, drags us down and chains us to the past. Freeing ourselves from fear is a loving intention because, as fear subsides, we are better able to access the soft, sweet power of our hearts, which naturally leads to loving ourselves and others more freely and completely. -Sue Patton Thoele

Since time is always a factor it is hard to judge, but I think Texas, ( as well as the SC handling of it ) has managed to make so many people distressed ( of course, especially women ) and outright furious, that what they ( the Reps. ) expected for 2022 may be totally off their plate now. They just might have energized voters ( I admit on both sides ) like nothing else could. That said -- I'd be betting on the left being very much more so.
No one wants more to work together, but the Reps. are not going to allow it, it would seem. Time to adapt to their strategy, even if it goes against our grain. T

Yeah, sure I believe that. NOT.

I found this thread thanks to Trishyla. I didn't realize how many threads need breadcrumbs and secret passwords to get in. It's nice to see so many of my favorite familiar faces here!

What a find. Thank you Trishyla.

What is happening in Texas has shattered me, as I know it has all of you. My growing fear for the future of my 17 year old daughter, all of our daughters, and all the women and children in this country is almost paralyzing. Fear, uncertainty, and dread has my heart clutched so tight that it is hard to breathe sometimes. Tears are always present, threatening to fall. It kills me that I won't always be here to protect my sweet daughter (who is also a minority adopted from another country...she is so vulnerable now).
I desperately wish one of you wise ladies (all of you are far wiser than me) could tell me it will be okay, but I know you can't. The very real fact is that it may not be okay at all. All of the rights we have as women is in serious jeopardy.
Where/when will this end?

cm - right with you!!! I'm embarrassed to admit I live in Texas in this day & time. And heart broken about the abortion ban & voting restrictions & 'free for all' gun laws that just passed. I hope Jackie is right about people getting mad - but from what I see most are really sad that all the activism of our younger days is being unraveled.
-
Thank you MinusTwo. I can't even imagine what it is like to live in Texas now. I will admit to being ashamed of being an American. That shame pales in comparison to all the fears though.

Truer words were never spoken.

Just found this top secret thread via Trishyla's post on the also top secret Covid thread!

Thank you Trishyla. This is an amazing thread!

For all those who have discovered this thread, welcome! Please be aware that if you have a more conservative POV, there is a hidden thread for you too, but please don’t post here. The mods asked that we not cross post to avoid arguments, which did happen in the past. I forgot the name of the conservative thread but if that’s more to your liking I’m sure the mods can help.

Thank you to all the serious, informed contributors on this thread. Know that your informed opinions and memes from serious to funny provide me with almost daily navigational skills needed to make my way on this planet, in my neighborhood and in my family

I hope no one minds that I left that trail. This is such a great thread for us progressives. Great posters, hilarious memes and IllinoisLady's wonderful quotes every day. This is the first place I check every morning.

This thread has helped me retain my sanity (or some portion of it anyway) through the disturbing times in which we live. Thanks to all who contribute.....especially thanks for the memes that make me laugh so hard that I spit out my coffee! 🤪

Trish, I think it's great to get more members who agree with a liberal point of view! Especially if it can be a kind of sanity saver for them as it has been for Ruth, me, heck pretty much all of us who've been here awhile! From time to time, I drop hints about this thread but don't have anyone ask further.
