INSOMNIACS place to talk in the wee hours

Things got kinda ugly a few weeks back, so I just wanted to nip it in the bud before we start up again.
-
Meadow- I hope you like it here on this thread. Tell us about yourself if you want? Family, pets, hobbies, anything you want to share.
I will share too. You might wonder why I call myself Jazzgirl? I play music for fun, five instruments including two horns, the flute, the violin and learning the steel drums. Jazz is my favorite genre of music. I also love to travel, love gardening, the outdoors, and going to take my first cooking class ever next month!
-
Wow, Jazzy,, that is awesome. I played the flute in high school band,, but must say I was never very good at it. Which 2 horns do you play?
-
Jazzygirl - Wow, you're quite a talented woman. I hope you enjoy the cooking class you spoke of. Is it for a particular type of cuisine or a basics class? I like cooking for others. It is very satisfying to see that look of appreciation on their faces when they are enjoying what I've cooked. I also love to make cheesecake for special occasions too. Unfortunately, I can't do the dinners like I used to do for my church group. The last one I did was in Feb. 2015 for a lady celebrating her 5 year cancerversary. It was for 31 people and I would have never made it without the help of 3-4 other people. Even the Pastor was scrubbing pots after dinner.
Lookforward - If you have a Joann's in your vicinity, they carry a nice selection of cotton yarns for the dish cloths. Plus, there are a lot of free patterns on-line too. Just google "free knitted dish cloth patterns."
-
Jazzygirl. wow, five instruments! I am impressed. I too love the outdoors. My parents farm has a beautiful and peaceful place where there is water and blackberries. Do you remember reading FierceBlueBird's quote in her bio line, about the tranquil place where the deer and heron rest? This place is like that and just thinking about it makes me happy, there is my Meadow. My husband is a great cook, me, just ok, I would love to take that cooking class with you. Thank you for sharing and for asking.
-
Jazzy cooking lessons are fun, it's is surprising what we can learn. I'm going to sign up for a phyllo pastry course. I have never had any luck doing it myself. I love spanakopita, can't wait. My daughters friend's own a Italian restaurant and give lessons in making fresh pasta. My husband doesn't cook [ he can make breakfast] . I am going to get him to go for a lesson, he'll keep them entertained anyways.
Juneb. We don't have Joann's here, but we do have Michael's and they have a nice array of yarn. The store where I am taking lessons is locally owned and they have a large section of beautiful yarns as well. I had a retail store myself and always try to support local businesses. We are surrounded by big box stores and they are shutting down the smaller stores.
-
Meadow I missed your post, is the farm still in your family. How wonderful to have a place like that. I would like to have a home with an acre of land in the middle of the the city. I do not want to drive roads into the city during winter

Morning gals.... Hi Meadow.... I know what you mean.... Just to have my yard and little gardens all ready for Spring makes me happy... I love to just sit out there and listen to my little water fall and the new Wishing Well water sounds! I mean I WILL just as soon as I can fill them and they won't freeze... But I'm getting there... A little warmer every day.
Looking! The only cooking class I had was in High School.... And I LOVED to cook, all my life.... I took sewing also.... because that's what good girls did when they got married.... Hah! And I DID make all the baby kimono's for my first born... embroidered "baby" on the front, because we didn't know what she was .... yet....
As you get older, you look back and think ... WOW, I HAD SO MUCH ENERGY IN THOSE DAYS...! And you have so much to do! But I still love painting around here and working in the yard...
Jazzy, how is the pan-drumming coming? That is such an interesting "sound" when you hear, and see someone playing that! We first saw this guy down at the beach on Singer Island... And it was just magical....
Hey Glennie! Good to "see" you!
Okay Spookie.... wake up!

if you find out how to lose any weight let me know. I feel better after walking but weight not budging. Not sure I'm up to much else. Tried riding my bike and had to get the boy to help push me up the hill. Scared to do anything else because of lymphedema. I think the meds cause muscle fatigue. I need to get back to yoga. Enjoy Zumba but basketball games come first. Next Sat is the last one but soccer starts soon.
I love those crocheted washcloths. I never thought about Barbie blankets. Maybe I'll try again. Just can't keep the instructions straight.
Homemade pasta yum. My cooking has gone downhill. I'll check out the the local extension office and see what they've got going on.
You all have given me great suggestions.
-
I remember home ec.. My home ec teacher didn't like chicken. And I remember thinking: "who doesn't like chicken? You can do so many things with it".
I'm just a basic cook. Nothing fancy. Can make spaghetti sauce from scratch,,, learned from an Italian boyfriend. These days, I don't have the energy to do fancy,, just stick with the basics. Protein, veg, like that.
I never learned to knit or crochet. Wish I knew how. Classes are always in the evenings and that's when I work,, so maybe one day when I retire,,,

Chevy how I envy you being able to work in your garden, spring comes a little later here. We did get to 50 f yesterday, so a lot of the snow is melting. I bought seeds, potting soil and peat pots, lots to do this week. Our kitchen Reno is starting in a few weeks and someone suggested preparing meals and freezing them.
Zills I feel for for you, I had muscle fatigue during chemo and lost my ability to bike and hike, walking was a struggle. I wouldn't even try Zumba, I can't follow a routine for the life of me. Tomorrow I am going back to yoga and looking forward to it.
Jazzy my son bought my husband an electric guitar for Christmas and he is taking lessons. He is really enjoying it, some of his playing even sounds like a tune now. He asked if I wanted to watch him practice yesterday ( like I can't here him all over the house) well he's a rock star what can I say. I asked him if he wanted to watch me knitt and he wasn't interested.
Glennie your right who doesn't like chicken
-
I have two left feet and it's been awhile but you just have to laugh at yourself. I love the music. It's better when you have a friend but you'll make them easily enough at Zumba. Most can't do it either. As the class is ongoing you have someone new all the time.
-
Good morning ladies!
-
lookforward, yes my parents still have their farm, they are both 84, my dad still tries to put up his own hay, my mom maintains 5 acres of yard and flower gardens. They are remarkable. Problem is my dad's farm equipment is practically as old as he is. We are close by so we help as much as we can, or they will let us. My boys, age 27 and 22, learned a great work ethic.
Yes Chevy your garden sounds wonderful.
Zills, I am so clumsy! Zumba is a great workout, especially if you are laughing hard at me at the same time!
-
Forward, just realized I have not answered your question....daughter was not worried until the second threat came in. She figured it was probably a prank because there was another threat (shooting) a few months prior that turned to be a prank also. That kid was caught within 24 hours and now is in Juvenile Hall. Sad. Ruined his life just for attention.

For Sassy, this is the snack set that was my grandmother's
-
Hi folks- back from an early morning trip to Sam's Club. I did my personal best today getting in and out of there in 54 minutes! The goal is to go first thing when they open and before the folks from church get there. Of course, there is the packing and assimilating to do into the house now.....
Meadow- not sure I know of FierceBB's line on her bio, but sounds so lovely. I have spent some time in Missouri long ago and it is a lovely place. Anything with meadows is lovely to me.
Chevy- well, the steel drum playing went on hold with no more classes being offered YET by the local jazz workshop. The class last fall did not make and nothing offered so far this year. I need a drum to continue playing but been saving up for that. Trying to continue on!
Genny- alto and soprano sax
JazzyJune- the class is called "Cooking with Georgia O'Keefe" whom I am a big fan of, and as many of you know, became famous with her paintings here of the NM landscapes. Apparently she was not only a great artist but a wonderful cook and some of the recipes are taken from a book called A Painter's Kitchen: Recipes from the Kitchen of Georgia O'Keefe. I am so looking forward to this!
-
Jazzy: one of my brothers played alto sax in the band. He doesn't have any more musical talent than I do, but Mom insisted that all of us be in the band. I love Georgia O'Keefe. That class sounds so interesting.

hmmmmmpf
Looks like we're going straight to summer. So much for spring.
-
Ms. Spookie, do people have problems with allergies where you live
-
Lover, I can answer that. YES!!!
-
BIG TIME YES
-
Glennie, are you allergic to mold? Or dampness? Our oldest Daughter moved there about 18 years ago... She had BAD allergies here, but she isn't bothered there.... And our youngest Grandson had Asthma here, but doesn't have any problems in Florida....
We both just "feel" better at sea-level than we do here.... but we were born here, so used to it.... Just is nice to feel "different" in Florida and California.....
We are expecting "weather".... pretty soon.... so I get a break from working around the yard for awhile.... And down to the 30's again tonight.

It's the oak and pine trees pollen. 11 different oaks, who knows how many variety of pine. Azaleas make DD sneeze, they're blooming now. My green car is turning yellow from the pollen.
Glennie is close to a couple of state/national forests. I'd guess it's worse there.
-
I USED to be allergic to all the trees and pollen's, grasses, etc. Finally went through the desensitization, and now nothing bothers me.... but it took about 5 years, getting those shots....
Have any of you gone through that? Or are your allergies mostly seasonal? They "test" you to see what you are sensitive to, and then make the serum according to your allergies.... Then the shots start out weak, and gradually build up to get you used to the irritants, then you hopefully can be around any of your triggers, and not be bothered...
I sound like I know what I'm talking about.... but that's what happened with me....
-
Darn! Allergies is really bad here in the valley. Even Mitzy has been sneezing the last few days. Good thing she doesn't have problems with her bladder. I would love to live near the beach where pollen counts are low, but I can't imagine paying the yearly property tax on a beachside home here in California. Love the meadows too, but the allergies will drive me crazy.
JunieB, water aerobics or swimming is good exercise because they don't put stress on the joints. 50 lbs is a lot to ask of someone in your situation.
Forward, best wishes on your renovation.
Oh Mag!! Love the snack set. So delicate and beautiful.
Zill, my kids kept me really busy too with extracurricular activities (Girl Scout, swimming, piano lessons, tutoring, volunteering at their school) when they were much younger. It is a bit better now that my older one can drive herself to and fro. Still have to chauffeur my younger daughter(12), but it's ok.... we only have school, swimming, and piano. I have a bit more free time now and trying hard not to worry about my older daughter's driving. Californians are crazy drivers.
Ms. Chevy, I enjoy the sound from my water fountain too. My garden gives me temporary happiness and peace until life demands calls me.
-
My Aussie was allergic to the spring pollens. Poor boy. He got 100 mg Benadryl when he was really itchey.
