Down here we like our hamburgers with lettuce, tomato, beetroot, cucumber, grated carrot, cooked onions and topped with Bar-b-que sauce. Mcdonalds and Hungry Jacks have had to add a burger with these items to their menus because Aussies don't like burgers with anything less.

When making them at home I often add bacon, egg and cheese too for DH as he likes the 'works.' Funny how different country's have their own versions.

    Sheila.

Wow, Sheila, beets and cucumbers? Sounds great but in the US not many people like beets. I love them, though. We will have to grill burgers at Uncle Bill's that way for Chrissy.

Today DH's band plays at a local beach bar from 2-7:30. They will have fireworks at 9 then tomorrow we drive to Miami Beach to visit my maid of honor and BF. Should be great watching all the fireworks from the beach.

We like redbeet in our burgers as well. Our non-chain burgers are just great and here likein Australia we have really good cheese, not orange plastic cheese one sees in the US!!!

Quite late here but I needed a cup of tea then will take myself off to bed.

Barbara hope you have a great day, the fireworks sound great.

    Hello everyone!

I haven't posted here in a long time but the hamburger/beet discussion makes me jump in.  When my girls were teens they went to Australia as exchange students.  They said they couldn't eat the hot dogs because they were fluorescent pink and they said the first bite of a hamburger made them gag because "they put beets on all their sandwiches here!"  They took the beets off and the hamburgers were fine.  And they learned to order theirs "without salad."

When one daughter's family came here to visit I made sure to have beets for the hamburgers, but only a couple of them ate them.  We did have real cheese because I don't like plastic cheese either.  But when we were ready to make the hamburgers we were just going to pat them out regular - well Aussie Dad came and said, "oh no, let me show you how," and he mixed in egg and other things.

    Edited to add Hello!

Barbara, I don't remember because we were at my daughter's house so I just left my S-I-L in the kitchen to learn from Aussie Dad.  I'd have to see if he remembers the recipe.

Lisa, that's a beautiful pic.  Youngest daughter did a summer semester in Spain many years ago, at Salamanca.  What beautiful architecture and to think Christopher Columbus went to school there.  It's amazing to see the buildings in Europe.  We haven't preserved enough here, tear things down and rebuild at the drop of a hat.

Lisa, thanks for the info. I don't remember if DD made it to Segovia while she was in Spain.  She was a poor student but managed to travel a bit while there.

Don't generally use a recipe for burger patties but generally mix into ground beef which we call mince an egg, some herbs of your choice, half cup of breadcrumbs or some flour and some tomato sauce. With wet hands make into patties.

Must get dressed as it is a family service at church this morning. Looks like anothe clear winters day.

    Hey there everyone,

I mix minced garlic and worchestershire sauce in my extra lean ground beef then make into thick 1/2 lb patties.  BBQ sauce is added when grilling and Monterey Jack or Cheddar cheese is added when almost done. Patties are put on buns that have mustard a little lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles and then the patty is topped with more BBQ sause, hickory smoked bacon then mayo and top bun.  We have 2 saying here: 1) if it ani't messy, it ani't a burger and 2) if it ani't sweet, it ani't tea.  I love the south.

amyjo - My DIL nearly went crazy missing her sweet tea when she moved to VT from FL.  Anytime she went south her first stop was at Chick-fil-A for a fill-up.

So funny, they always ask sweet/unsweet when I ask for iced tea. I totally do not like sweet. So funny.

love all these different versions of a good ole burger!  there's a local frozen brand called Philly's Best and they are our favorites. I'm a purist, I like just cheese (real), tomato, lettuce, and a mix of mayo/ketchup (what we called russian dressing my whole life growing up..I was shocked to find real russian dressing had other things in it!!)  The bun - has to be grilled just a little

Oh yeah, that grilled bun makes the best burgers no matter what else y'all put on 'em.  My DH used to put just a little bit of melted butter on the bun before grilling and that was divine.  Our butter intake now has about disappeared, though.

Marlegal, my favorite salad dressing has that "russian dressing" in it.  I use a mix of low fat mayo, ketchup, and sweet pickle juice to thin it, and add a sprinking of ginger.  Very good!

3Jays, thanks hon. enjoy your burgers tomorrow night, and I get having to be invited places ... if you aren't enjoy your 4th anyway.

we aren't doing anything in particular...we're down the shore at the trailer but no company and no plans to get together with any neighbors so it looks like a quiet 4th for us too ... i'll see you in here!

All the talk about burgers and so it was burgers tonight - from Burgerfuel  they have great burgers but huge. DH hate half of mine. The Aussie girls maybe have heard of the chain. It is evidently trying to go global.

We have a great American fare restaurant in our little country crossroads of a town.  People come from all over for their chicken and biscuits and their Wheelburger.  All of their buns are homemade and the beef patty is made from premium ground beef formed right there.  Vermont cheddar is my cheese of choice but the toppings vary; sauteed mushrooms, sauteed onions, blue cheese, american, mozzarella, provolone, swiss, bacon and the usual tomato, raw onion, pickles, etc.

My favorite is cheddar with pickle, onion, tomato, mustard, mayo.  Any family or guests who are in town on Thursday meet  for dinner and a great bit of conversation (another condiment I love).

Good morning Ladies,   I am going to head to Ptown, to my Dad's, after I get a few things done here this morning. Harley is ready to go.  I am actually starting to look a bit tan, which makes me happy....I like to look healthy even if I am not and I feel so much better when I don't look like a vampire.

Re burgers.....we do have real cheese in the US, Alyson....I think it was you who spoke of the plastic cheese....that other stuff is called Cheese food and I am not sure why they even invented it except maybe for the fact it is cheaper.  Beets on a burger?....will have to think about that one....I love beets, but just don't know if I would want them on my burger.  They also so terrible things to hotdogs in the Chicago area....have never had one, but you see them on the street and in the airport...have all sorts of "stuff" on them.  Someone from that area can enlighten us as to what all they put on them.   I am content with a hotdog with just plain old mustard on it, but I also like with with sauerkraut and spicy mustard if I am feeling my roots, and I like chili dogs with the chilisauce, mustard, grated cheese and a little onion.....but not that stuff they show in the pictures spilling off the sides of the hotdog in Chicago.  Now Chicago style pizza, I like.

Now that I have devoted an entire post to my likes and dislikes when it comes to food, I think I have better get going....want to water all the plants before I go....hydrangeas and inpatients like a lot of H2O. Yesterday was really hot and I think the next few days promise to be the same.

Have a wonderful 4th for those of you who celebrate it. What did you do on Canada Day? Fireworks, parades? I do not want to go to the fireworks, but last time I told my father that he went by himself and fell down on the riverbank and I felt so guilty about it....someone with a cane and who is 89 yrs old should watch them on the tv in my opinion, but he is a very stubborn old man and knows how to work me. Later, MB

We are off to Burlington for the birthday of our 3 year old great-nephew.  Three years old equals 1095 days.  That doesn't seem like a lot of time to know as much as he does.  He is all curls, smiles and sparkling eyes.  Should be fun.

    Morning all.

Happy July 4 to all the US girls.

Its Mainly Music with GD this morning then over to see BS about this latest lump which has showed up. I wish we didn't have to be so worried about anything to do with BC. DD is actually coming with me this morning.

Its a cool day here but more winter weather is supposed to be coming in.

Alyson - AAARRRRGGGHHH!  I agree.  I wish someone would invent a Tide Stick for lumps.  You know,  you find a lump and you put out an email  "Does anyone have a Tide Stick?"  Someone emails back "I do"  and that's it.

Not anything really planned for the 4th since DH has to work and since he is Pres. of our HOA we have to put in an appearance at the neighborhood pool party that will be from 4 - 7pm.  Other than that nothing else planned. Any fireworks we watch will be on TV.  I wanted to go to the beach, but it was not possible since DH has to work today and tomorrow.  I think the beach will wait until later in the month.
