Wow, Eric, wonderful recipe. Walnut size would probably be 2 tablespoons, don't you think? And chicken egg maybe half a stick, about 4 tablespoons? Bake middle hot sounds about the 350 as you said, but cooking in a wood stove (we still have one at my MIL) middle hot would actually mean pan position as well as temp. I am really interested to see if you tried it out, if so, let us know! Thanks!

I've always loved most any kind of dumpling.  That sounds like a sweet dumpling in a carmal sauce! going to have to try it.

Trinity, I would probably go high protein, too.  Protein with some fat content digests more slowly than carbs.  When I am nervous, I do not get hungry and I was very nervous before my bmx/recon surgery.  It was scheduled very early so I got up about 5 or 5:30 am that day.  Good luck with your surgery.

Michelle, we won't be heading directly home but will be meandering and visiting some of dh's family in MI, IL, WI and IN.  Brother, sister, cousin, nieces and nephews.  We plan to return home about the 1st of Oct.  Tomorrow we make a short drive to SD to visit friends who lived in LA thirty some years.  I would bet money on a delicious walleye fish dinner tomorrow night.

We ended up not going out to dinner last night because we got caught up in activities here at the resort.  So we're going out to dinner tonight.

Hey Eric, I try to translate all of my moms recipes with her every chance I get, she is also Greman. Something I want to pass on to the kids. Well some of the recipes, they don't like them all.

These are my grandmother's (born in 1888) and my grandfather's mother's recipes.  Gramp was the youngest of his siblings, born on Christmas Day, 1887.  His parents made it through Ellis Island right around Thanksgiving time.

I haven't tried the other one....although I will be doing so.

This one I have tried.  My grandmother would make it only Christmas morning, so it was quite a treat for me.

Mickey and I spent about a month, on and off, figuring it out.  It took quite a while to get it past the "it's almost right" stage.  The hard part was getting the brown sugar to melt, but not scorch..

    3 cups flour

    1/2 tsp salt

    3 tsp baking powder

    1 cup sugar

    6 tbsp shortening

    3/4 cup milk

    1 cup brown sugar

    1 tbsp cinnamon

    Butter as desired.

Mix flour, salt, sugar and baking power and then add the shortening like your making a pie crust.....I use my bread fork  (a very heavy silver plated steel thing that is 1/2 a step from being a serving fork) and mix everything just enough that the dough is evenly "wet".

I split the dough into two pieces and spread it out so it covers the bottom of a couple of 8 inch cake pans.  Then I stick my fingers in the dough to make some (8 or 10) "dents" into the dough and brush melted butter over the dough.  We found if we didn't make the dents, the butter and would run to the edges of the bread.

Mix the brown sugar and cinnamon together.

From here I have two ways of doing it....

Either bake for 20-25 minutes at 400F, brush more melted butter on and then spread the brown sugar/cinnamon mixture on and serve hot..

    Or...

bake at 400F about 15 minutes, brush on more mekted butter, spread the brown sugar/cinnamon mixture on the bread and (WATCHING CAREFULLY) continue baking until the brown sugar begins to melt, remove it from the oven and wait about 10 minutes (let the sugar harden) before serving.

We found the timing to be kind of critical..getting the sugar to melt enough without scorching and getting the bread fully baked.

My grandmother was the expert at the 2nd method.  The two of us did OK at it, but we had to watch it the whole time.. My grandmother could be doing other things in the kitchen while it baked.  She said it smelled ready when it was time to come out....I haven't figurd it out that well yet.

I continue the tradition and cook it only on Christmas mornings.

Hi Trinity from a fellow Texan - I like Michele's suggestion (LuvRVing).  Protein to hold you over and some fat and fluids/electrolytes; watermelon sounds yum in this heat.  In the morning you will be so busy I bet food will be last on your mind.  Prayers and best wishes.  Let us know how you do.

Eric, can't believe it...I grew up with "Cottage Pudding" & a butterscotch sauce...my mom always made it.   There were 10 of us & this was a cheap dessert....another one we loved was Bread Pudding & of course Blanc Mange....all cheap, easy & good.  I used to make  all 3 of these for my 3 children too.

Eric, what is the name of your latest dessert?  Have you considered fully baking the crust and then torching the sugar mix the way they torch the sugar to make the crust on a creme brulee`?

I've heard it called, I think, (spelled like it's said) "seme-cukan". Where the first sounds like semi but with a long E sound at the end and the later starts off sounding like cucumber and ends sounding like "and" without the d sound.

My mom is not sure of the name either, but did say that kuchen translated to English is "more or less" cake.

I'll talk to my mom some more about it.

Welcome Trinity and Nancy. Hope your surgery goes well Trinity.

Wow what a busy thread. Too many to respond to but read them all and thinking about you all.

Carole- Have a great, fun, safe trip, Hope you are able to check in once in awhile and let us know how you are doing.

Eric- I love reading about all your German recipes what fun it must be to try to fiqure out what measurements are in each one. The one kind of sounds like the Malasadas they serve in hawaii so good.

    Chabba- Thinking about you often!

It was so great to see my sister last night, she arrived after midnight then we took the shuttle back to the Sheraton and had a late snack since she was hungry. They had a video poker machine room and played until 2 am (they dont have any form of gambling in hawaii) My Sister was having a ball even though she was tired. Got back home around 6pm tonight. Had left over enchaladas for dinner. We will leave early in the morning to see my dad not sure how long we will stay there guess it depends on how he feels and how long he wants 2 crazy daughters in his house. LOL!

    Hugs to everyone!!

    one gallon of pesto sauce:

We had a drought this summer so the basil just didn't thrive. The Vietnamese sell it super cheap tho at the market downtown. I bought 7 bunches (2 free) for 5 dollars.

I made it and it had too much salt so i had to had more parsley, more cheese and olive oil.. the basil was a little odd this year.. very flavorful because of the lateness of the season and the heat. anyway it turned out to be the best I ever made. I have 3 containers in the freezer and one in the fridge.

    YES!

I'm trying to think of a pesto recipe for dinner tonite.

Apple - my daughter made a chilled pasta salad with pesto, chicken and cherry tomatoes...very simple.  It was really good - she used the corkscrew pasta so the pesto stuck to the pasta really well.  You could add any veggies like bell peppers, artichokes, sundried tomatoes, etc.

Debbie - so glad you and your sister had a great night!  I hope the visit with your dad and mom goes well, and that your dad is doing as well as can be expected.  (((Hugs))) to all of you!

Sunday morning I made a big batch of chili (yeah, I know - not exactly the season for it, but I was hungry for chili - so sue me Laughing) so Sunday we had chili for dinner.  For lunch we went to the track to watch the horses run, and I had a salad while my husband munched on a mufaletta sandwich.  Monday we had chop salad with salmon instead of chicken.  I also made a couple more liqueurs for the winter.  Lemon/ginger and spice (used cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, clove and mace).  We'll see how they turn out.  I had quite a bit of ginger, so also decided to make some candied ginger, then I add the left over ginger syrup to Perrier and have my very own ginger soda (which I must say tastes far better than the ginger ales you buy in the store!)

that sounds so delicious gardengumby.  I never thought to make candied ginger.. sounds great.  I wonder if it would be too hot for my mouth? - well the soda would be fine.

Apple, I like it hot, but you can reduce the heat of the ginger by doing a rinse/repeat on the water while you're doing the first cook (before you add sugar).  The more times you change the water, the milder the flavor.  (I don't change the water at all....)  Innocent

Hi everyone!  I have been reading when ever I have a chance but haven't had the time to post and read.  So I figured it's been a while and I should check in :)

Debbie- I hope the trip to your dad's goes well and he is feeling ok.  I am sure having both daughters in his home, no matter how chatty you may be will be wonderful for him.

Chabba- Continuing to send you hugs.

Michelle- Hope you are feeling well, watching your facebook posts makes me excited for Hawaii!!

Karra- Your pics of your DGD and family are wonderful:)

Carol- Love the story about ugliest fish, prettiest fish, sounds like you are still having an amazing time!

    Deb- Happy anniversary!

Eric- Just reading your posts makes me tired, you never stop going!  Love the stories about the recipes and family history.

I know I am missing a lot of you sorry.

We had a bust weekend.  We went to the local fair and had a lot of fun petting goats and lamas and eating "bad" food.  I have to admit that it is 4 days later and I am still bloated from everything I ate:(  We did a lot of yard work this weekend.  Sunday night I made homemade chicken tenders with corn on the cob and baked potatoes.  It hit the spot.

Today DH and I actually went out to lunch just the two of us, I can not remember the last time we did that.  We sat at the bar of a local pub, just because we could!  No table for us!  My lunch was wonderful, I am still not hungry for dinner.  I had a turkey burger on grilled sour dough with guacamole, pickled red onions and Monterrey jack cheese, it was yummy!

Tomorrow is my oldest first day of pre school and he (and I- probably more me) are very nervous!  I hope he lets me leave eaily and has some fun.

Love to all of you and hope it was a great day.

Hi everyone!  Just got back to NC from my trip to Fl to visit family.  Had a wonderful time, ate too much, drank too much, and now it's time to get back on track.  I had mahi mahi and brown rice and peas for dinner tonight!

Tomorrow I go for the dreaded eye injection and pray they don't break another blood vessel that takes weeks to heal:(

Welcome to the newbies, and I have some catch up reading to do to keep up with this thread!

Sharon's biopsy results were "nom-diagnostic". There were too few cells in the fluid for any tests. The ENT doc thinks it's just a cyst. He wants to see her in 6 months and to call if it comes back.

I grilled chicken tonight. We don't seem to get enough chicken. Left overs from last night's meal completed dinner.

Last night I did they guy thing and cooked a roast over the grill (on the rotisserie). A salad, corn on the cob, mashed potatoes for DD (she loves corn, but it's a challenge in braces) and some fruit. Basically a simple meal that didn't heat up the kitchen.

Mom and my mother in law were over for the dinner.

We had taco Tuesday tonight at home.  Then we've been watching the Democratic National Convention speeches.

Moonflwr - hope you had something that cheered you up!

Eric - glad to hear it's probably nothing serious.

Kaara - hope the injection goes OK...make my eye water just thinking about it!

Laurie - glad you had a nice "date lunch" with your DH!

Took my 86 year old dad and his lady friend to the casino yesterday for his birthday. A very pleasant (if unprofitable, for me anyway lol) day. Tonights dinner I think is barbecued ham sandwiches and salad with a raspberry balsamic vinaigrette. Hope everyone has a good Wednesday.

Got a kick outta the potato conversation.  thought everyone knew what a salt potato was.  My daughter says they dont know about them in NYC either...same state, different country LOL

Good homecooked meal before kids left, grilled steak, zucchini, yellow squash stir fry with garlic wine sauce, corn on the cob.

Between the marina cookout (with all kinds of meats from chicken to sausage) and our home cooked steak, my wonderful son did all of the grilling! I will definitely have to buy him a grill when his house is done being built. Wow how he has grown up just within a few months of graduating from college.

Tonight leftover steak on a salad, really gotta get on track...too much good eating.

Eric  great news for your wife.

Laurie  Awwww what a milestone,  is it an allday preschool?

Hi all - have not been eating anything interesting lately.  My DH gave our old Weber BBQ to the neighbor and he did a 10-hour pork butt on it over the weekend - it was pretty delish.  I have been a weird combo of hungry/not hungry and have ended up eating stuff that I should not.  I am spending too much time at home because I am trying to complete a couple of projects before I go to D.C. for the next vaccine injections on Sunday - so... I am snacking too much!  The flip side is that I am up to 6 miles for the speed-walks!  Everyone sounds busy and enjoying the end of summer!

Moonflower- Yum!  Onion rings!!  Don't feel guilty :)

Carrie- I am so glad you enjoyed your time with the kids!  Sounds like he is growing up on you, in a good way.  My sons school is only three days a week 9-11:30.  Next year he goes all day.  It's the first time since he was 6 months old that he goes to a school type environment!

Auntienance- The casino sounds like fun!  Good for your dad:)

So school went great for DS#1,  DS#2 cried and did not want to leave him.  It was very sweet when we picked him up after, DS#2 screamed his name and ran for him and hugged him super long.  The new routine will take some getting used to.  I should have gone grocery shopping this morning but did not want to leave him out.  Both boys love the grocery store.  I took them out to lunch to celebrate a successful first day and DS#1 ate his entire plate of spaghetti.

Tonight we have soccer at 5:30 so I am getting ready to put together a chicken pot pie to cook in the oven while we are gone for the hour.  It's kind of muggy to be having it, but I'll run the a/c while we are gone so it is cool in the house to eat.

Laurie:  Your little guy looks so cute in his preppy school clothes!  It's so special when they first go off to school.  Mine loved it!

Eric:  Glad the results were favorable...that's good news and be sure to do the follow up in six months.

Eye injection went fine...A/C...not so fine....have to replace the cooling coils which rusted and the freon leaked out...oh well...better than buying a new unit!  I'm going to be hot for a few days until the part comes in, but I'm going down to stay the weekend with a friend in Greenville on Friday.

I bought some pork chops that I will make with asparagus and a salad for dinner tonight.

Eric great news on Sharons results!
