So...whats for dinner?

Yikes Debbie, what a terrible scare! I'm a bit surprised the hospital let him go before all the enzyme tests were complete, tho my DH once managed to convince the ER that he needed to leave in time for an administrative meeting he had on his work schedule.....with several local hospitals! I was not amused. Did they give him a cardiology referral? You have both been through so much. I hope you can both rest a bit today, and think about a plan for your health and well-being. Whew! Know the fright! Warm (((((HUGS))))).
Kaara, glad the hematoma isn't painful at least. Hope it resolves quickly.
Best wishes to you, Blessings, on this new phase of your eating plan. I hope we can be helpful with some healthy food ideas!
I totally slept in very late today. Must be the country air...and the constant tiredness.
DH just told me there was a mass shooting in CO. So disturbing! Not sure we will ever address the mental health needs of our citizens sufficiently so we can stop such madness!
So sad for the families....and DH said a 6 year old was a victim. What was a 6 year old doing at a movie at midnight....and THAT movie!!! Sorry....one of my let peeves about modern non-parenting!
I will stop preaching...... -
Thanks everyone for your well wishes. much appreciated he is relaxing today and feeling tired but otherwise doing good. LACEY- Chuck had 3 different blood test every 3 hours I think those must of been the enzine test? Those came back normal. Sorry you had to go through that too, did your DH have a heart attack or was it stress related? And yes.. That shooting is horrible and so sad!
We are suppose to leave tomorrow with our friends where my dad lives but this time we are staying in a hotel since we have our friends with us then going to do a jet boat excursion down the Rogue River, wasn't sure we should go but hubby wants to and says he is feeling fine. We will come back on Monday. Sounds like everyone has some fun events planned this week too!
Michelle- I find the sweet ones are spicy too, so I try to buy the Mild ones instead. Hope your feet are feeling better.
Kaara- That must of scared you, seeing the blood in your eye. When I had my lens replaced in my eyes one was bloody and it scared the crap out of me but it did go away on its own. I was glad to hear the shot wasn't as bad as the others were.
Seaside-Speaking of whooping cough it is going around again, another big outbreak so be careful I don't know if you can get it again or not?
Blessings- Kudo's to you for being so strong and staying on a liquid diet, I bet the food taste so good right now. baby steps...
Everyone have a fun filled and safe week-end!! Hugss!!
Oh and one thing I wanted to mention was the cardiologist that saw DH last night when going over a diet plan for him said if everyone ate just broccoli and beets there wouldn't be heart disease. And said that just within a couple days of changing a good diet will make a big difference. Hmmmm!
-
Debbie - what a scare. So glad that your husband is home and doing well.
As for eating just broccoli and beets - probably there wouldn't be heart disease, but we'd still all die of something - probably boredom!
-
Yuck, beets taste like dirt...LOL! Just never acquired a taste for them. Broccoli is good, better with cheddar, though that's probably not what the doc had in mind
Feet are better - I managed to clean the downstairs today, which is a good thing because our friends are coming for dinner tomorrow night and we're having family and friends over for a lake party on Sunday. Tomorrow night's dinner will be clam chowder (I'm buying it, not making it), lobsters for the girls and steaks for the guys, fresh corn, caprese salad and something for dessert...maybe Modern Pastry cannolis (you local ladies know about the Modern Pastry Shop, right?) She is Italian and will appreciate the Italian dessert. Her husband will appreciate any dessert...lol! On Sunday we're having bbq chicken and sausages, everyone is bringing salad, fruit, etc. and I am making another trifle - either banana cream, chocolate banana cream, or a mixed berry version with chocolate...decisions, decisions
-
Wow, Deb, I am glad that ended well. Enjoy the weekend with friends and DE-STRESS! Blessings good for you, enjoy real food. KAARA, it is freaky to have your eye red. But it does go away. Just tell everyone you are an extra on Breaking Dawn 2! LOL. LACEY, sleep when you can, makesbup for when you don't. Also I agree with you, 6 is too young for a midnite movie. Especially one like Black night. To everyone, heal if you need it, relax if you can, enjoy the weekend anyway! Much love.

Debbie, DH calls that good eating "nutraceuticals"!
His story.....About seven years ago, in the middle of the night (after being at a cook out where DH enjoyed sausage and peppers/onions, and thought he was experiencing indigestion), he woke me up saying "Something is really wrong, hon." He was sweating and obviously scared shitless....really unusual for him who minimizes EVERYTHING! So I called 911, and I threw my clothes on. He made his way downstairs as I dressed and when I got to the door where we usually leave the house the garage door was open and DH was no where in sight. I was running around the property calling his name and expecting to find him slumped in a bush. That and the drive behind the ambulance was the scariest part.
I finally found him sitting on our front stoop awaiting the ambulance. Well, they had gone to the house next door!! But did make it to us after waking our next door neighbor who of course told the entire neighborhood before I was even back home!
He was held at the hospital for two days....turned out we learned after a few more episodes that he has a vasospasm condition, Prinzmetal disorder, that was finally diagnosed correctly because he had a spasm on the table while being wheeled out of the MGH cath lab (having just had everything cleared as "normal").
The doc raced him back in and got the picture of his spasm happening in his left ascending artery. Whew...a lucky happenstance since it is very hard to diagnose this condition unless the spasm is actually happening during the test, and that is rare. We have the photos of both the open artery, and the totally closed one, and they are certainly in a cardiology book since this observation was so rare. He takes a bunch of meds that prevents it from happening, and has been totally fine. And yes stress is always a factor!
Never hurts to eat healthy food....we enjoyed a great smoothie with fruits, nuts and plain yogurt this AM....not sure about adding the kale to that mixture, but will start researching more combos .
Have fun this weekend! -
how scary is that, Lacey!!! My husband (when under a lot of stress...) will occasionally get a spasm of the esophagus (sp?). The first time he had one they hospitalized him for a week thinking he had a heart attack. So scary. Finally they put a camera up his femoral artery into his heart to have a looksee. The heart specialist told him that he had the healthiest heart he'd ever seen. So, now he knows when he gets the pain that he needs to go to ER and ask them for a liquid to drink that has numbing medicine in it (I can't remember what it's called). Then if the pain should continue, it's not an esophageal spasm. He's had it happen 3 or 4 times over the last 30 years, and each time is a little less terrifying. The artery spasming sounds even worse, though, as blood is pretty important to keep moving around.....
oh yeah - food... Tonight we're having meatloaf and salad. We're taking a little weekend camping trip in the morning and want to have some easy snacking food to take along - meatloaf fits the bill. ('sides, I love it. )
-
Where will you be camping gardengumby?
-
Travel plans for next summer... Hmm. I'm thinking NH, some location where dh and I can drop in on Laurie's and Michelle's parties! Laurie, that supper with lobster and steamers, etc. etc. sounds like a feast. My mouth is watering as I type.
Debbie, glad the emergency room escapade turned out ok. Hope you and Chuck enjoy your weekend.
Sounds like everybody is busy and enjoying the summer. It has warmed up in the northern half of MN. The A/C is back on in the camper home. DH and I are glued to the tv watching the British Open golf.
Good health vibes going out to all.
-
My DH must have forgotten that the British Open is on...he didn't ask me to change the channel.
Carole - for years, we camped on Lake Ossipee just below Winnipesaukee. That campground went "condo" but there are still RV parks around that lake. It's clean, scenic, close to North Conway and the outlets. If you're looking for a seasonal park, there are lots of them all over the state!
-
chabba - we don't really know. We're heading up the North Cascades Highway, I believe - unless we change our minds once we get going. We're pretty changeable once we get on the road. If we can't find a campground available, then we'll probably just stop in a rest stop and sleep
handy having a truck with a bitsy camper on the back... I miss the parks that have closed.
-
Every TV in the house is tuned to the British Open. My BF called me in to watch Tiger chip out of the bunker and into the cup on 18, because it reminded him of my shot in Scottsdale...yeah right...the difference being Tiger planned his and I just got lucky! I forgot to do the fist pump..hehe!
Not cooking tonight..going to the diner to have trout and a salad. They have the best fresh fish.
-
What a busy day on here today!
Debbie: hope you and DH are doing well.
Michelle: happy to hear the feet are on the mend.
Laurie: busy weekend for you - here's to all that energy, but what fun.
well, I wish everyone well, have a great weekend whatever you are doing with great food and company.
Going for dinner and music in the park with friends tonight, but the music in the park may not happen.... thunder and rain rolling in
-
Debbie, what a scare, I imagine it would feel surreal. I'm glad you didn't get into an accident. Make him have a full work up and physical to check his cholesterol and BP and everything and tell the primary doc what happened! He might want a stress test. It's so obvious that you two love each other, and that is good medicine. I'm so glad that you were there for him, and that he is there for you. It sounds like you are great together. Now to fix that "person" who is the GM. Geeze, some people are idiots. It would be nice if you could get away from him. RI has casinos! Come, Come, I'm hypnotizing you..... (Actually the unemployment is really high here, usually tied for 1st or 2d place with Michigan), but we do have free free free! Medical disability for 6 months for everyone and unemployment. I guess that's good. Hugs to you and your hubby.
PS Eating only broccoli and beats may or may not make us live longer, but it sure would make it feel like longer!
Carrie, how would you know what marijuana smells like?? To quote Momine "I am shocked, just shocked, I tell you!"
Gardengumby, how bitsy is your trailer? I've been throwing around RVing too along with other crazy ideas. Teardrops are a bit too tiny even for me. But Cute!
Tonight silence, blessed silence. Tomorrow Farmer's Market with a friend, then the hair thing, then my duties at community garden. And the pile of bills I've been ignoring. Visa and Mortgage are paid, so I keep thinking "what can really happen if I deal with them tomorrow or tomorrow or tomorrow. Aren't
ignorance and denial great sometimes?!
Sunday Kayaking! YaY
Tues More Indian food with a friend.
-
OCF (other country food) tonight. I stopped at Fresh Chow on the way home from work.
-
Lol Deborye! That kitty looks like I FEEL and may even resemble at this point.....Lol!!! TGIF is right!
-
Michelle!
Wow your dinner tomorrow (and Sunday) sounds beyond delicious.... I mean clam chowder, lobster AND cannoli??!!! What time shall I arrive? LOL. Hope your feet are healing well!!
Debbie,
Thanks for the heads up on the whooping cough... I guess I was thinking since I had it I was done but, now it's looking like, from what I've read, maybe not! After what I went through I did have both of my kids vaccinated with the Tdap vaccine. The TDap is a relatively new version of the old DPT or DTaP that is approved for children older than 7 and adults... They think what's going on with these outbreaks is that the vaccines that we got as children, and were thought to confer lifelong immunity, are wearing off and that's why we are seeing these outbreaks in the teenage/adult population... In fact, until fairly recently, there was not a vaccine that could be given if you were older than 7 years old.... I think next time I'm due for a Tetanus shot I'm going to ask for the Tdap rather than the TD that they would normally give as I NEVER want to go through that again! -
Seaside, I did have that shot just as I was starting my radiation sessions b/c a student
in our school with whom I worked was being watched for whooping cough. Turns out he didn't have it, but I'm glad I got re-immunized nonetheless.
Michelle and Laurie, have fabulous times at your sumptuous sounding parties. Modern Pastry desserts? Now that's what I call going "all out"! Did you make that drive all the way to the NE to get them. Wonderful hostess!!
We took a nice long walk today, then visited everyone who was on the beach and heard more on the break-in stories. Apparently these folk are breaking in to many of the businesses too. I feel so badly for some of the merchants who can barely eek out a living up here, having to face a ransacking. The police cars are up and down our streets now...a real rarity...tho it sort of feels like a barn door kind of effort.
We went to a local restaurant that sits atop a hill and has the absolute best view of the lake (I'd post the darn picture if I could!). We dined on the deck and had a lot of food with a gift cerrtificate given to DH by our association for Dj'ing last year's Labor Day beach party. We shared seafood stuffed mushrooms, had really close to authentic Greek salad, DH had filet mignon and I for the first time in years had the recommended queen prime rib. OMG! Now I remember why I never get it....waaaaay too much visible fat to cut aside to get to the meat that is supposed to help my mitochondria heal.I felt like I was a surgeon doing liposuction without the tube! I just do not do well looking at that much artery clogging gloppy fat. The broccoli, and sweet potato casserole it came with were good. But as I said to DH we eat here for the view! Look up Ledgewater restaurant in NH. I'll bet they have some photos of the spectacular view.
Next two days are supposed to be beautiful...hope you all enjoy great weather too!
Deb, which country? There are many, you know....;) -
Lacey - I had prime rib tonight, too. It wasn't very good though - it didn't have that much fat and it was tough. I ordered the smallest cut and ate about half before I gave up. Your dinner sounds luscious, and I will definitely check out the Ledgewater! Nope, I don't have to go to the NE to get Modern Pastry cannolis. There is a market here in Salem, 10 minutes from me, that gets a delivery from them every Friday! Cannolis, ricotta pie, cheesecake, everything but my all-time Modern favorite, the chocolate fruit tart. But we will get the mini cannolis, unfilled. They give you the filling in a little plastic bag so you can fill them when you are ready. It's great - the shells stay nice and crispy for a few days! This same place also carries the Konditor Meister cakes -- you can even special order. Have you heard of it? Cakes to die for, really! I have a friend who gets them for special occasions and ... oh my!
-
Thanks, Michelle! I just wasted an hour looking at gorgeous cakes! LOL, all your fault! Just for that, you have to see cakewrecks.com. you can waste a lot if time there, and have a good laugh at the same time.
-
I knew there would be some comments on the Beets lol! And your right Michelle broccoli is better with cheddar. I dont think i can make that taste good w/o all the good stuff on it. ha! Oh and I'm with seaside can I come over to please? Lobster and cannoli yuuuummmm!
Lacey- Oh what a scarey thing for you too! Good thing they were able to find the cause of what was going on with Dh. I have never heard of the vaso spasm before, thats what scares me, even his test were normal did they miss something? Hmmm! Just glad your DH is fine now.And your too Gardengumby!
Tazzy- Hope its not a wash out on your dinner plans! Have fun!
Bedo- LOL! Your so cute and funny! We do love each other (other than when the tv is blaring) but even then. The night before this happened he said, in case something happens, I just want you to know I love you, I said well then you are going to be telling me that for a long, long time! We have gone through RI before and it is beautiful in that area. Unemployment is not as bad as there so you could always come here hehe!
Deb- Fresh chow as in french? or maybe chinese? haha!
I was sitting here thinking about yesterday and was laughing a bit. After being there most of the day I was tired, you know how when your tired you laugh at stuff that really isn't funny? Well, a case manager came in dh room and she is serious and asking him questions (she was kind of snooty too) She asked him do you use a cane or a walker? Dh reply was" not currently".For some reason his reply sent me over the edge I started laughing hysterically I was trying so hard not to laugh and when she got to the next question I just burst out laughing I could not stop.. I had to run out of the room. When she left she wouldnt look at me, I was so embarrassed! Chuck said she probably thought you were laughing at her I told him it was his comment that had me in hysterics. I did tell Luke (the male nurse) to apologise to her though. I hate when that happens though where you try to suppress your laughter and you can't. I must of looked like a luney bin! LOL!
Packing for trip tomorrow everyone have a great week-end!
-
Ohhhh Michelle those cakes look diving my mouth is drooling.
Lacey. What a beautiful view of the lake with a rainbow and I checked out the menu it looks really good.
-
Wow, that's great that you can access all those pastries so easily, Michelle. I ever get into the NE to get speciality desserts because the parking is so scarce. My sister used to live there, so we often enjoyed such goodies. Yes, much better to fill the cannolis just before serving. We had a Konditor Meister cake for DS1's wedding. It was soooo delicious!
I think you would love the prime rib at Ledgewater....and it is their most popuar item.
I would definitely go for the filet next time....and stop complaining. -
Lacey - I have to exercise serious restraint every time I walk past this store's pastry display case. It's a good thing I don't have a big sweet tooth because everything looks fabulous, even their "own" creations. I checked out the Ledgewater - looks like a good option for a late Saturday afternoon excursion ending in dinner. Many years ago when I was dating my first husband, we would picnic at Newfound Lake. It would be fun to go back there.
Debbie -your ER story is too funny!
-
beets.. ick. i love almost all other root vegetable tho except for sweet potatoes.. go figure.
I pretent that i enjoy both tho, to set a good example for my kids. they are the most nutritious. I love rutabaga mashed with a little milk and butter. omgprime rib sounds pretty good.
-
Am I the only one who likes beets... and most veggies actually - weird I know.
Since chemo I have developed this sweet tooth - not good for my butt, must walk more.
Hilarious Debbie - the laughing story - hate it when that happens.
Dinner & music in the park plans were scuppered last night - torrential rain, thunder and lightening.. oh! well. Me & DH went to a new Indian Restaurant 5 minutes from us... was reallly good. I am very critical of Indian food as when I lived in London, England I lived in the Indian Food capital of the world (West London) except of course for India
Hope all your parties go well and there is lots of laughter and fun.
Enjoy your weekends everyone. Off to a friends tonight for a bbq - no rain in the forecast.
-
Tazzy, I like beets too. Sometimes I roast them along with other veggies. Other times I boil them, dice them and make a salad of them with lots of parsley, red onion, pine nuts, balsamico and goat cheese. You can also grate them raw and make a grated salad of carrot, beet and parsnip. Very nice fall salad.
-
Tazzy: I love beets and we actually have them almost daily on our salads. Didn't know they were that healthy for you so that's a plus. I also like broccoli..with or without the accompanyments! I can eat it raw and love broccoli slaw. When I cook broccoli, I take the stems and save them to put in my smoothie...a great way to get the health benefits without the taste.
I think my alkaline diet has actually cured my sweet tooth. I can actually walk by a piece of red velvet cake and brownies with cream cheese frosting in the local grocery without giving in to temptation...a good start! I did have a small dish of bannana pudding at the diner last night...yum!
Momine: That recipe for the grated salad sounds wonderful! I'll have to try it. Beets with goat cheese are great!
-
I think my taste are changing as I age. Used to have a huge sweet tooth, LOVE chocolate, but now I can pass it by and I barely ever have a desert. Maybe having hormonal changes has something to do with it.
Bedo Just thinking that it would smell like that, very strong herbal odor.......just saying!! I was a child of the seventies
Apple I cant do sweet potatos either unless they are fries, which probably negates the healthy aspect.
Well, gotta get moving. Making some barbecue pork nibblers to take out on the lake for snacking.
-
I also really enjoy beets...in any form. I have yet to add them to our smoothies, but am sure that's coming. I love adding them to salads.
Sorry about the cancelled concert Tazzy. Mother nature is really flexing her muscles this summer! Have fun at the BBQ.
Michelle, it would be fun to coordinate a Saturday to visit here and land at Ledgewater for dinner. We are headed to NJ next weekend, but will be here just about every weekend except for the birth of DGD1....back to NJ for that in late August we think (DGS came a few weeks early) Am selfishly hoping she doesn't deliver during peak traffic times....have I vented about how I hate that congested trip!
Not a cloud in the sky today...heading for the beach soon, and tonight going to the Winnipesaukee Playhouse to see "Mousetrap".
Debbie, I can just imagine the giggle scene at the hospital. Reminds me of poor little "Thomas" in 5th grade, who when corrected by the harsh nun would get nervous and not be able to stop giggling. You can imagine how well he fared with Sr. Mary Sadistic!
I always felt badly for him, and was so terrified, I didn't dare laugh.Lucky I could hold it!
