So...whats for dinner?

Good stories from everyone...fun reading while I was having my coffee this morning! It's been a while since I've been up in the middle of the night not being able to sleep. Maybe it's the tamoxifen that makes me tired, but usually when I hit the bed I am asleep until at least 6 AM....maybe with one up and down to go to the bathroom.
I had three teenage boys at one time..plus a teenage daughter. The boys loved to eat and were very independent about making their own lunches when they got home from school, as I was working. I had been given a nice gift of Omaha Steaks that I was saving for a special occasion only to come home from work and discover that they had friends over and had eaten all eight of them!! WTH! I said ok one but why two? Well...they were small and we were hungry they replied. They then had the nerve to ask "what's for dinner?"
I'm going to finish planting my herbs (finally found my rosemary) and flower pots. I use vinca in the pots because it can withstand the heat and doesn't need to be watered every day like other flowers. I selected red and white which really pop against the landscape.
Tonight we are going to see a play at the local little theater...."Nunsence". We have a couple of good ones here but you have to buy tickets early because they sell out quickly. Hopefully I'll get dinner out before.
-
Hope the little guy is OK Laurie... hard on you I bet eh? Especially being so tired. Hey maybe you should call your friend and say that you have changed the lunch date to a pot luck at your house... and she has to bring the pot luck
Oh! and tell her not to forget the olives.
Chabba - what a wonderful story of your BIL - I could feel my heart strings tug when I read that.
DH & me have no children either (through choice) and I read some of your stories and wonder how you manage it all... seriously - with work, kids, DH AND bc... Some days I have only energy for me, especially after treatment...and
then I read your posts and have nothing but admiration for your stamina. And makes me think about whining.Carberry / Luv.... Tums in chocolate flavour... who knew.... Good piece of sleuthing there. Hope you are feeling better soon.
Apple. Even if we had an argument, my Mum would never ever let me or my sister leave the house without her saying I Love You.. even if I stormed out, slamming the front door behind me (which I did often as a teen). And to this day, if me and DH have had words, if he happens to leave the house I still say it to him.
Off to do breakfast now...

i am going to have to try a martini.. i think it would knock my off my you know what. I kind of like those fancy beers.
When i was in college i had the best friend ever.. we really should have gotten married but i was no way ready to settle down.. (now he is super rich, the dean of 2 colleges.. has in own wikipedia page and a lab at Scripps .. anyhoo... his dad was the THE president of Sunbeam and he had a collection of Bordeaux (s) from the '50s. So he would bring us cases (we lived in the same apartment) and said.. come on guys.. you have to help me drink these while they are still good.. so every Friday (while dutifully doing our homework, schoolwork we'd be drinking some fancy schancy French bordeaux.. I really haven't drunk any wine since then because it was so incredibly delicious. nothing even compares. I was very fortunate to live with Jerry for 4 years.. and ended up with a couple extra cases ( all sorts) myself which i jealously guarded for about 10 years of special occasions. He was the best friend of my whole life.. I remember him asking me if i wanted to get married.. we had never even kissed.. and i just said 'no way! oh well.
o man.. the bottles would cost over 500 dollars today. I see on the internet that some bottles are over 1300 $. geez. and we were just kids doing homework.. no hanky panky.. (should have taken advantage of that)
-
Apple- another amazing story! The people you have met and known, the things you have done and experienced. Wow.
Back to martini's- the irony is I don't like oilves, but I love them in vodka...go figure.
Michelle- Are you more comfortable since the draining?
Tazzy- I agree with you. I only have the 2 and when I read of the other ladies here having raised 4 etc it make my head spin!!
-
Apple.. have you ever thought of writing a book of your life experiences ? your life is so interesting in so many different ways.... sad, happy, funny - I'd buy it
-
Laurie - yes, more comfortable and less lumpy! I can actually tell where he drained away the fluid and the skin is back where it belongs against my chest wall. How's the weather up in your neck of the woods? We are getting a thunderstorm with downpours at the moment. DH and I were sitting outside eating lunch at 12:30.
-
tazzy - loved your eh? - my mom was born in England, was a twin but their mom died shortly after childbirth, so she was sent to live in Canada with her maternal aunt. I miss her eh's!
-
Apple, I have a friend like that. She dragged me, without knowing it at the time, out of my "cave" that I crawled into after Mickey died. No hanky panky... I just couldn't....she was too much like Mickey...but we were very tender toward one another...we ended up like a close brother & sister.
She got married and they retired in their late 40s. We still talk a lot and we can still read each others' minds. :-) -
Special... Eh is one of the 'wordism's' I have picked up. It makes me laugh that we all speak the same language, but in so many ways, it is so different.
On our first vacation to Canada a Canadian said to me the way that you (the English) can tell the difference between a Canadian and an American is that Canadian's put Eh? on the end of everything. Its true they do.
-
Carrie- Hope your tummy feels better soon, wow chocolate tums who knew? ha!
laurie- Hope you get a good nap in being up like that all night just kind of ruins your day and makes you feel sluggish, almost like you drank one too many martinis the night before
Michelle- Love your new avatar you look so pretty. I hope the new meds kick @ss but are gentle on you. (((hugs))
I love olives especially the stuffed ones, you'd think i was at a buffett when we are out drinking, i ask for lots in my cocktails yumm!
-
OMG- boys would not nap, they are over tired and insane. I am over tired and insane. DH called and said he is going to be late again tonight. I bought stuff to make stuffed shells so the boys and I can make them for dinner and maybe they will eat them. They loved the idea of big pasta that looks like sea shells. Lord help me make it till 7. Yes 7, usual bed time is 8....not tonight.
-
DH hates olives but I always make him order lots ina martini and then I eat them - he thinks I am a nut. I am not a drinker - just want the olives!
-
Deep breaths Laurie... deep breaths.... !
-
Laurie - you are brave! This is about the time I'd be turning on the tv to their favorite shows and hope to make it to dinner. Get that bottle of wine open and breathing!!!
We're having steak on the grill (if the sky doesn't open up again) with baked potatoes and asparagus. And a bottle of French red Rhone wine. I goofed and didn't buy mushrooms. DH offered to go get them, but we have enough food without them.
We had fabulous BLTs for lunch, made with Burger Smokehouse Bacon from Apple's neck of the woods. I'm down to my last two pounds, I'm going to have to order some more pretty soon.
We had a friend in Missouri who would order a Coors Light draft and a glass of olives on the side...lol!
-
Michelle- The weather has been strange today hasn't it? I have mushrooms! I wish I had a baby sitter, I would bring you some and eat dinner with you! And yes....I am nuts. I do have the tv going, I am eyeing the wine and am going to make the shells a group project....maybe I should open the wine first
-
Always open the wine first
We have rain here too... so cover back on the grill of the bbq and I am doing a Shrimp in Thai Coconut Sauce served over rice.
Wine is sounding good... !!
-
Tazzy - the wine is open here and in my glass, and yummy!!! The potatoes are in the oven and we'll start the grill in about 15 minutes. It rained again, then it stopped, now it looks threatening again. One way or another, the steak and asparagus are getting on the grill!
Laurie - open the wine, pour the wine, and sip the wine!!! Guaranteed mood-changer!
-
I haven't had a glass (or 2) of wine since being dx'd in January... just because I haven't fancied one. Had a couple of beers...but for some reason wine, a nice red, is sounding more and more attractive. Luv... you dinner is sounding delish...... still raining here !
-
Tazzy - I didn't drink much while I was on chemo. And I'm starting Xeloda next week so I may not fancy wine again once I get started. This is going to be a close call...it's sprinkling and the steak is going on the grill, come he$$ or high water!!!
-
Tonight is linguine primavera with roasted chicken for DH, for me the chicken and the primavera without the pasta! It has been raining like crazy here in FL - we have a 50 lb. dog that is terrified of lightning/thunder and has been following me like a seeing eye dog and trying to sit in my lap. Hard to get anything done. At one point I considered trying to make him a thundershirt out of an ace wrap!
-
Luv... my DH has bbq'd in the snow before... has to be done eh?
Oh! Special... I had such a great visual of your rather large dog attempting to get on your lap.
-
They have to go to Lahey Clinic in Burlington MA to remove the stone. They got the gallbladder out but could not remove the stone in a duct.
It will be an outpatient procedure he will not have to stay in the hospital, the insurance is going to pay for everything, hotel, air travel ***everything.
They will fly here Sunday and go back home Tuesday. He will recuperate at a nice Marriot hotel here.
My DH asked if they only had voodoo medicine in Bermuda. LOL
-
We have a 25 lb dog that thinks if he barks loud enough he can drive the thunder away. I get out the ear plugs now when it storm and I used to enjoy thunder storm (as long as they weren't right in the neighborhood.)
-
tazzy - he thinks he is a purse dog, lol! You can imagine what 4th of July is like - in my area it is like WWIII - fireworks like crazy - poor thing is beside himself! The good news is that he is so sweet it is easy to be sympathetic rather than annoyed.
chabba - he just started barking at loud noises in the last year or so - he is 5 now. He will stop if I tell him to, but with each boom he just gives a little bark. Right now he is nibbling on his blanket trying to calm down.
-
Deb - so that's great that you can be with them! And wow, that's awesome insurance!
Dinner is over, it was awesome and the wine is consumed. Now, can I stay awake until 10 or so? I drank my share...
Love the dog stories! We had a lovey for about 10 years or so, he was terrified of fireworks! JoyceK has a new puppy - I need ot call her and see how that's going.
He liked to go camping with us!
-
Luv.. he lookslike he's smiling.. and why wouldn't he be... I see a beer in that can holder.
-
Michelle- I hope you got your steak cooked! What was your dogs name? I agree, he looks like he is smiling. Just looking for a rub
Deb- That is great that insurance is picking up the tab on everything! LOL at your DH's comment too.
They are asleep. Sigh... dinner was a huge success. Usually when I make shells I add spinach, mushrooms, onion garlic etc. Since it was just me and the boys I went straight up cheese and it was really good!I may have even enjoyed it more without the veggies, it tasted sinfull. The boys loved helping. My trick is I put the ricotta mixture in a gallon bag and snip the corner off with scissors. Use it like a pastry bag to fill the shells. The boys helped make the mixture and held the shells open while I filled them. The 4 year old ate three, the two year old ate two and asked when they could have them again. Yay! Bed time did not go as well, major melt downs. They were just way too tired to function anymore. After a 20 minute scream fest they both settled and passed out in about 10 seconds.
I have just poured my second glass of wine. I have a feeling there may be a third....thanks ladies for listening to me today.
-
Way to go Laurie... you did it... you survived and deserve that 3rd glass - truly.
The Shells sound lovely with straight up cheese... I have done them with a taco type mix also. Great idea to get the boys to help you out.
Cheers !
-
Laurie - glad the boys are down and the wine is also going down! The dog's name was Bailey - we got him in MO at an animal shelter, he was on his last days before they were going to put him down. They knew nothing about him but he turned out to be the sweetest dog we ever owned. And he loved me, as if he knew I had saved him. When we put him down because he was so old and sick, both my DH and I cried. I'd love another dog but we like to go away and so that doesn't work so well. We'll see - I think our landlord wouldn't mind as they have a dog, too.
-
Michelle thanks for the help with finding me some chocolate tums....who knew. I have thought of prilosec or something but am hesitant to add another med to my regimen. today I eliminated milk from my diet to do some experimenting to see what triggers the upset. tonight I did ok and actually had dinner...even though it was only a BLT.
Laurie Congrats You got through the day. Even if the wine didnt make your evening go more smoothly, at least you didnt care. I bet now you will be asleep before your hubby gets home.
Apple I loved that story...like reading a romance novel.
