So...whats for dinner?
Comments
-
Michelle- Forgot to ask, Did you Win?? I hope so and hope you had a great relaxing time.
-
i want a pet crow.. that little black doggie is hilarious in bedo's video.... what a funny looking dog.
Dinner was so good last nite,..i just cut up some chicken breast and lightly sauteed my own nuggets.. my and the girl child didn't even get to have any... Those boys and their dad... how rude... fortunately mangoes, strawberries and yogurt rock.
I decided to plan my meals around the vegetable of the day.. today it will be a roasted cauliflower unless it is too hot to run the oven..
one of my favorite salads is cauliflower, avacado and rosemary.. it's somehow perfect.
peace and love, apple - aka, Mary Magdalen
Diagnosis: 4/10/2008, IDC, 5cm, Stage IV, Grade 3, 4/9 nodes, mets, ER+, HER2+ -
minus two......Heaven!!! Thanks for sharing it.
-
MinusTwo - sounds like you had a fabulous trip. I love SF, too! I am sure I'll be gaining a few pounds when I go to Paris. As a matter of fact, I am planning on it!
Debbie - I didn't win, had a few hits and recovered some of my money. I had a good time, the drive was easy, and I had a very nice dinner there before heading home. And a glass of very yummy Sangria!
Laurie - that's a bummer about the chicken piccata. I agree with the suggestion to dilute the sauce with chicken stock. Or chop up the chicken and add it to soup, which would also dilute the lemon tang. My son told me that chicken piccata is his favorite meal.
Apple - it's going to be quite warm in your neck of the woods. Time to enjoy those summer dishes. My DH won't eat cauliflower so I never cook it.
Deb - the Oncotype test may not have been common five years ago. That's probably why your MO didn't order one. My first MO didn't want to order it, but I insisted (with my first BC). My score came back as 50...lol!
-
minus two: Great place to visit!
Laurie: I did the same thing the first time I made that dish. Now I slice the lemon very thin and add a few pieces right to the sauce when cooking and it absorbs the flavor, but not too much.
Apple: That salad sounds wonderful..never thought of those combinations before. Is the cauliflower cooked or raw? What kind of dressing?
I baked cod last night on a bed of leeks with balsamic and butter sauce. Had it with fresh asparagus that I lightly blanched so they were still crisp. Yummy! It's good served with mashed potatoes with a little of the leek and sauce on top, but since we don't eat white stuff, that was out:(
-
The oncotype dx test is for women like me with low stage bc and no node involvement. Or at least this was true 2 1/2 years ago when I was dx'ed. The test is done by one laboratory, located in the US, and it examines the tumor tissue and gives it a rating for likely recurrence. A low number suggests that chemotherapy is not necessary. A high number suggests that chemotherapy is wise. A middle number calls for a decision on the part of the dr. and patient.
I believe the thinking is that chemotherapy has serious SEs and should not be given if not absolutely necessary.
I had never heard of the oncotype test when I went for my first apptment with my BC dr. followng dx. She gave me a pamphlet and told me that I would have the oncotype following surgery. She also ordered an MRI on the breasts and a complete body scan.
I wrote romance novels under the pseudonym Carole Halston for Silhouette Books, which is owned by Harlequin Romances, the biggest publisher of romance fiction in the world. I wrote fulltime for 21 years after retiring from teaching English in high school and college. I had 35 novels published, all paperback, and all were published in many different languages. It was funny to receive copies of my books in Japanese and Italian and other languages. I retired from writing in 2000 after finishing up a contract. Writing is work and requires dedication. I decided I had had enough of spending all those hours in my office. Time is more valuable than $$$.

"That salad sounds wonderful..never thought of those combinations before. Is the cauliflower cooked or raw? What kind of dressing?
raw cauliflower also raw garlic and onion of course.. if you let it marinate in the dressing a bit, it softens. i suppose you could blanch it..
super simple olive oil, lemon or vinegar, S & P .. the rosemary is just beyond my door..

OMG Laurie on that cake!! I havent had a good cake in a long time...no sense making one here as my DH doesnt really like sweets and I would have to eat it all by myself...oh darn! I am going to make that key lime pie as my daughter is coming in this weekend from NYC.....so excited.
Minustwo what an awsome trip...so envious. When living on the lake, there was nothing better than opening our window at night and listening to the waves.
Well better get moving and do some house cleaning before the board of health shows up and condemns the place. Have a pork roast defrosting...will do on the grill with some smashed potatos and a vege.
-
I love caulifflower the only way DH eats it is when i roast it with garlic, evoo and parmasan cheese but i want to try the raw salad that sounds really good.
Carol- Oh wow we have a celebrity amongst us ladies!! That is so cool carol i used to read the harlem books back in the day when i had a libedo LOL! I always loved the romance steamy kind of books.
Carrie- LOL@ the comment on the board of health showing up LOL!
We are going out tonight with friends that have been in mexico for 3 weeks she called and said We missed your laugh and need a Debbie and Chuck fix- They are, are in there 80.s but act like they are 30 yrs younger just the sweetest people ever. They make us feel young LOL!
-
Carol- WOW! I can't believe you had 35 books published! That is more than impressive! Just curious, do you like to read the types of books that you wrote? How did you get into that?
Michelle- yay for breaking even and having fun! Glad you enjoyed yourself.
Kaara- your cod sounds yummy. I bought some today to have tomorrow night, wish I had some leeks.
For the chicken piccata I used 1 cup of chicken broth. I think the recipe just called for too much lemon. It said to thinly slice a half lemon and called for a 1/4 cup of fresh squeezed lemon juice as well. Next time I wouldn't add the juice and just do the lemon slices. I swear I could taste lemon the rest of the night.
Tonight I am going out for a glass of wine with girlfriends. Not long, but long enough to get me out of making dinner and bath routine! DH said he would try to be home for 5:30 and I will come back for 8 so I can help get the boys to bed and read books etc.
I am upset about the dentist appointment for the boys today. My youngest who is 2 had his first visit and they said his two front teeth are in really bad shape. They asked how much juice he gets and I told them he drinks about 3 cups a day. They told me to only allow 4 oz a day and cut it with water. I already buy motts for tots which is 1/2 the sugar. Ok....then she asked if he snacks a lot and I said constantly, She said thats part of the problem, don't let him have more than 2 snacks a day. We brush his teeth in the am and pm, he uses a fluoride rinse. I was heartbroken. She said if the decay continues he could lose his teeth before it is time. WTH?? They also told me to have him start chewing Trident gum after snacks. Which just seems bizarre but I bought it and he likes it and didn't even swallow it. I left feeling like the worst parent on earth. I honestly don't get it, how can I try to do everything right and end up with a 2 year old with bad teeth? But I was very proud of him, he even let the hygienist polish his teeth and do the full cleaning, she couldn't believe it herself and said he was the most well behaved 2 year old she had ever seen. Yha- the two year old with bad teeth....
-
Laurie- Dont you EVER feel like a bad parent, you are the best parent i know i mean you really are, some kids can eat all kinds of junk food and never get cavities, and some like your son only eats minimal sweets and gets cavities i think its just in there makeup. You are doing everything right as a parent so dont feel bad. You should be proud at what youve accomplished as a mom.
Michelle- Im glad you had a nice relaxing time by yourself i havnt made a trip to the casino in quite awhile my dh will be going to a food and liquor show in chicago in may i plan on spending most ot my time at the casino while he is away.

Here is a chicken dish called whole roasted chicken in potacchio- I saw it on the chew today and it looks amazing
ngredients
- 1 (3 1/2 - 4 pound) chicken (trimmed and patted dry)
- 2 - 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
- Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
- 6 medium new potatoes (quartered)
- 6 small sprigs rosemary
- 1 large onion (cut into 8 wedges)
- 1 cup crushed canned tomatoes
- 1 cup dry white wine
- Pinch of cayenne pepper
kitchenware- Measuring Spoons
- Measuring Cup (set)
- Chef's Knife
steps ingredients per step instructions- Heat the oven to 375°F.
- 1 (3 1/2 - 4 pound) chicken (trimmed and patted dry)
2 - 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
Pinch of cayenne pepper
6 medium new potatoes (quartered)
6 small sprigs rosemary
1 large onion (cut into 8 wedges)
1 cup crushed canned tomatoes
1 cup dry white wineRub the chicken all over with a tablespoon or two of olive oil and season it well with salt inside and out. Add a pinch of cayenne to inside and outside of chicken. Put the chicken in a large roasting pan (you want some room around the chicken to hold the vegetables in a single layer). Add the potatoes, rosemary, onion, tomatoes, and wine to the roasting pan around the chicken. Drizzle a tablespoon or so of olive oil. - Roast the chicken until done, periodically basting it with the liquid that accumulates, 1 to 1 1/2 hours depending on the size of the bird. (When cooked through, the juices that result from pricking the thigh will run clear and a thermometer inserted in the thigh will read 170°F.) Let the bird sit for 10 minutes before carving.
- To serve: Serve the chicken pieces with the potatoes and onions from the pan. Spoon out some of the tomato "sauce" and add that to the plate, too.
-
Debbie - I saw that chicken on The Chew, too. It looked amazing and I am going to have to make that dish very soon!
Laurie - two of my grandkids have had cavities in their baby teeth. They drink water almost exclusively and she limits their treats. They do eat a lot of fruit but how do you restrict that? I think some kids just have softer teeth. You're an amazing mom - don't EVER doubt it for a second!
-
thanks ladies. My kids eat almost no sweets. If they eat all their dinner they get to choose a dessert. 2 cookies, a small dish of ice cream etc. She said it's the juice and the carbs they eat, carbs turn to sugars and she said the gold fish crackers, graham crackers even granola bars are what is doing it. So I have explained to both boys that they now will have breakfast and one snack between breakfast and lunch, one in the afternoon and dinner. PERIOD. One 4 oz cup of juice, they can make it last longer by adding water to it. I just feel bad that my youngest doesn't like milk. I think I might go try to find him a really fun cup and make it is his water cup. He likes water and chooses it over milk.
I literally started crying when she was talking about it all. DH was there and was great as usual. I kept thinking he is 2....2!!! I really don't want him to develop a fear of the dentist like I have.
-
Laurie, my kid never drank milk and she is fine. I never touched the stuff either if I could avoid it and I am also fine (not counting the cancer that is), same for my mom. Do NOT sweat the milk stuff. American peds are obsessed with milk and there are plenty of other ways for kids to get calcium. Mine ate yogurt, cheese, sardines and spinach. But if the kid picks water anyway, might as well skip the juice. Nothing wrong with water.
However, you might as well skip the goldfish and granola bars. That stuff is not good for anyone and there is no real reason to get the kids used to it. -
Laurie- I echo what momine said your kids will get there calcium in other foods. I have a fear of dentist too, i get sick just thinking about it, i have to have a cavity filled in my front tooth i have been putting it off forever i finaly made the appointment but found one that puts you completely out, thats what a chicken im LOL!
-
What do ya think the dentist did to us older generation people? I am petrified of the dentist, they have to sedate me to even get to the chair. My kids do not have that fear. Laurie, you are a great parent...I agree that some kids just have softer teeth. I always gave my kids juicy juice...not sure if you can get it...no sugar added....and I always cut it in half with water. Just like with our cancer, you cant predict what or how things effect our health...you just have to do the best that you can.
Debbie I saw the chew today also and that chicken looked sooo yummy, yesterday was mac n cheese day on the show and i was licking the tv!! I love that show!
-
Carrie- I saw that one too, oh if only we had smell avision and taste avision lol! My siblings are the same as me, when we were little and lived in San Jose, califronia my mom took us kids to a dentist i remember how mean he was and yelled when we cried, he didnt numb us up first, later my mom found out he was a fruad and was working without a license my mom was so upset not sure what happened to the guy but i think thats why i have such a fear of them.
-
I didn't go to the dentist until I was 8 or 9 and by then I had a lot of cavities. The dentist filled them without any pain medicine and I was very fearful after that. I didn't go to the dentist for the first ten years of my adult life and ended up with peridontal disease and having to have surgery. After that you take very good care of your teeth and go for a cleaning every three months:( I always took my kids to a pediatric dentist, but two of them are afraid anyway and hate to go.
Laurie you're doing the right thing with your kids...like someone said, some just have soft teeth. I have good teeth but bad gums. You can't win. The dentist is right...carbs do turn to sugar, so even as adults we have to have limits on those.
Tonight after seeing our naturopathic doctor we took a long drive up the beach and stopped for dinner. Very nice.

-
What station is Chew?
I'm going to half to try that chicken.
-
Deb - it's on ABC (805 and 812) on my Comcast cable at 1 p.m. You can get the recipe at
You can actually watch full episodes on the site. It's a fun show to watch.
-
Laurie, how easy our good mothering foundation can get shaken, eh?! I agree with the masses...you are doing just fine...and now just have a bit more info to help you make decisions about what passes those little front teeth. Too bad it was given in such a judgemental, not helpful way. Some kids do just have softer teeth. And, by the way, since you mentioned the pacifier, if you get to the point of wanting to wean DS2, I can suggest an adorable and hilarious kids' book on that topic.
Love the fun cup idea!
Saw the BS for a follow-up today and she confirmed that my exhaustion was not from the rads effect, but from the Tamoxifen that I've been on for two months. I see the MO next week so she deferred to her for deciding if and what to do about any change....but did say that most people have this effect pass in 6 months to a year. Holy cow!! That is not a small amount of time to feel like I am about to pass out from fatigue. Well, I'll wait to see what the MO says.
Fun to read about your writing career, Carole. I have kid book manuscripts that have never made their way to any publishers...maybe when I retire...which may happen sooner rather than later with this damn fatigue.
Yes, that crow video was hysterical.
To the Pickety gals, my colleague loved all the little items I bought for her gift bag at the NH gift shops. -
-
I'm happy to hear you colleague loved the gift bag. I sure would.
Thanks Michelle, I will check those channels.

Had a great dinner tonight started out with mac and cheese, steamers and crab cakes shared between 6 people for dinner i had sliders you get a pick of 3 i had a crab slider, fried chicken and a philly cheese steak they are little but after everything else im so full and sick... blah! Quite the entertainment tonight our friend Brett who sang and our friend George got up and sang with him while DH played the bongos my DH is great on those things just love to hear him , he got a standing ovation! So proud of him!
-
Debbie that sounds like so much fun. Sliders are such a great idea, but your right it is easy to try and taste all of them. When we did pizza out on Wed. it was half price night, so our friends got there ahead of us and ordered 4 dif kinds of pizza.. of course I had to try them all even though I cut the slices in half....way more pizza than I ever eat.
Kaara I don think I am getting that effect from the Tamoxifen. Hang in there and rest when you can. I already know that you eat healthy:)
Michellle I keep forgetting to thank you for reposting the key lime pie recipe..THANKS!!
-
son #2 was on pain meds for about a year and the only way i could get them down was with apple juice.. bad choice.. his front teeth were completely compromised.. lots of problems by age 4.. anyway i remember seeing an x ray of his excellent adult teeth.. they looked so good. They came in great and he has the nicest smile now and no cavities.
sooo there is hope
-
Hey girls,
I don't post too often. Not venturing out much cooking wise, so feeling like I don't have much to contribute!
However, I try to read and catch up on the recipes and how you all are doing. Prayers are said often and laughing out loud at posts!
Laurie, I really wanted to respond to your post re: your 2 year olds DDS appt. I had the same thing happen with my DD. She was about 2 as well at her first visit. Her teeth looked fine but were so soft from, of all things, my nursing her! She had some tooth decay on her little molars and I felt horrible! To top it off, I had worked in the dental field for years! She did have some fillings early on, but she is almost 16 years old now. I must say that she has the most beautiful smile ( had braces) but her permanent teeth came in nicely. She had sealants put on her permanent molars and she may have a filling or 2, but literally her teeth are gorgeous!
Just wanted to share our story, too. I so know the feeling of being a horrible mom her let her baby's teeth go bad! Now Lindsay has a beautiful smile and healthy, too!
Hugs,
Lexi

Hi all I go to a "Special" dentist that other dentists refer to. I can't handle that drill. You have to make an appt with him first so he can see how nuts you are and then another one for the actual dentistry. He asked me " Do you need to be in a twilight sleep with Versed and Fentanyl? I said, "Of course not! I just need 1) the laughing gas then 2) the numbing gel then 3) the novocaine then 4) the head phones. I'm NOT a "sissy!" He looked at me kindly and said, "Of course you're not a sissy" and smiled. I saw in his eyes, "Of Course you are a sissy, every here is a sissy. That's why you are all here. Do you see the people in the waiting room with their spouses and others near tears?"
Carole, Did you ever meet any of those heart stopping Romance Cover Men???
http://www.loveromancepassion.com/whos-on-the-cover-male-romance-cover-models/
I get to go to the dentist today. I am off. No drill Yippee!
I told my daughter all about Pickity Place. She said I was a nerd.
Laurie, sounds like you don't do anything different than other people! They are such perfectionists!
Debbie that Cauliflower sounds good.
Lacey, Im sorry about your se. I hope your MO works them out!
Carrie Our dentist informed my Mom that "baby teeth don't have nerves" and drilled away! I wonder what he thought all the screaming was about.haha. I have an abnormal nerve pattern so they never can numb me right. although they always promise and promise it's never happened. We also got candy after our dentist vist ( from the dentist) Weird, huh?
For dinner pop cycles and ginger ale and vicoden (oral surgery)
