Gardengumby, it took Fightin' Bob LaFollette 10 years to prevail and clean out the corruption. The fight isn't over. Rest today, get back up tomorrow.
L -
Ugh's the word, gardengumby. I heard the results and turned off the television.
Back to my Civil War reading. :-)
Who was Fightin' Bob LaFollette?
-
Ugh is right - I was able to switch from US news to Canadian news and with what's been happening up here (don't ask) I am now reading.....
-
Awwww blue - the colonoscopy prep - it just flat out sucks!
I am trying to play catch up again as I have been in this funk since getting sick 10 days ago and still am having issues. I leave Sunday for Florida and won't have internet access for 13 days so I will try to catch up when I get back into town.
Hoping those having tests come back BORING! I still take lorazepam before each test due to anxiety issues.
-
Good Afternoon Everyone!
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Sandy, Mary and Rosemary. I'm hoping for unremarkable results.
My little Maggie is at the vets today. He's called me three times already. The first two times were to discuss the fact that he found a 2.5 cm tumor on her jaw and thinks it could be cancer. He also told me they did xrays of her knee and it requires surgery.
The last time he called, he told me that she didn't have cancer but a bone cyst in which a tooth had grown up into it. So he removed all that and stitched her up. The vet also removed an abscessed tooth and a broken tooth. While I am relieved it's not cancer, I'm just exhausted from all the worry. I can pick her up today at 5:30.
Once her mouth has healed, she'll have to go back in for knee surgery. My credit card is ready to blow up. And I'm freaking out ... it's going to be in the thousands of dollars range to get her fixed up.
Jancie .. hope you feel better soon and enjoy your vacation in Florida.
Blue .. so sorry about the colonoscopy. I'm a month past due when I should have mine. Since they found polyps on the last one, I have to go every three years. I've just been to lazy to call the surgeon and schedule an appointment.
Hope everyone is doing okay today,
Bren
-
Bren - I think vets charge way too much! However, they can because people are willing to do so for their "children". If they animal has to spend the night - you can already figure that you are going to pay at least $600 which to me is ridiculous because I can put my horse in an intensive care unit for $25 per day.
-
Bren, I hope Maggie is home safe and sound.
-
Good luck with Magie Bren. We just found out Baxter will have to have the rest of his teeth pulled. I know what you mean about vet bills. I am glad my kids are grown and I don't have big bills for them too!
-
rosemary-b, what a sad baxter you will have after all the teeth pulled out! Vet bills are really high that's all I know. It seems they were worse than visits with the local Dr. for years, not sure about now don't have any kids, and have insurance for us, back in the day didn't have insurance that covered well care just hospital care.

Athena - he was the father of progressivism, three-term Governor of Wisconsin 1900-1906 and U.S. Senator from Wisconsin 1906 until his death in 1925. He created the "Wisconsin Way" of governing that has been destroyed. He was a fascinating figure, but I love him as the father of progressivism.

I mustered up the energy to drive to the barn today to see Jazzy. Got on her and for the first 10 minutes she was "show perfect" and then she went totally ADD on me and started getting super high. I got off of her - didn't want to risk getting hurt.
Jazzy was worried because all of her buddies were out of sight in the far pasture. As soon as I let her go she ran like the wind to catch up with them.
Will try to ride her again tomorrow but later on in the afternoon when the horses are brought in.
Tonight I don't have to cook as dh and I are invited to dinner at a friend's house.
-
Wow, HL, that gives me hope. Wisconsin is also the first state to have an Innocence Project, and also something like the modern welfare system.
I am reading "Battle Cry of Freedom," one of the most highly regarded single-volume accounts of the Civil War. I am ASTONISHED at how little has changed in so many ways. I am at the stage where Lincoln has just been inaugurated, the Deep South states have seceded but no hostilities have broken out yet. The Right Wing Nuts who defended slavery back then are so much like the right wing nuts of today! Different topic, same blindness -and in some quarters, same ability to side with moral abomination, unless you think forced vaginal ultrasounds as proposed in Virginia were anything else. Delusional, claiming the MORAL high ground, vindictive, violent, my-way-or-the-highway....and defending their "rights" and "freedoms" in as myopic a way as Michelle Bachman might today.
If anyone takes this personally, I shudder to think what their politics are. I HOPE we can agree that pro-slavery, pre-Civil war people were right-wing nuts.
Bren - Yikes on the bill! All for one's beloved dogs, I suppose.
-
Can you BELIEVE that the bill granting women the same pay as men when doing the same job was blocked? I really truly don't get it.
(Actually, in a way, I do get it, as my first husband was ADAMANT that men should ALWAYS be paid more than women, even when doing the same job. --- Only a part of why he is my EX-husband...
) -
Garden -- It's in the corporate (not public) interest to shoot down that bill. After all, it would mean that a company couldn't lay off/fire male employees and then hire female replacements at a lower rate.......<sigh>
I'm astounded (as a Canuck) at the number of state governments that want to do away with the minimum wage. And I'm equally astounded at the low esteem many people have for teachers. I was watching a programme the other night on PBS which featured a public school teacher who had been laid off, lost her benefits, and then was rehired at half her former salary.
-
Just got back from my colonoscopy. Two polyps removed. One near my appendix. Guess that's why I was having so much pain in that area. Anyways all I can say right now is "HOLY FARTS BATMAN"!
-
Good to get those polyps out, Blue. I had a couple at my last colonoscopy as well. Of course, that earned me my next colonoscopy in 2 years instead of 5.......
Mary
-
don't worry about those polyps - there's only ONE kind that can "turn into" cancer - and they'd let you know if you had those.
villous adenoma
I'm excited - I just bought my first sewing machine!!!! Yeah, now I have to learn how to use it. Janome S500, manual, drop in bobbin, I followed ALL the "instructions" of my sewing friends - including Barbe on this site who gave great advice. YEAH

-
Yay Blue!
-
Good news, Blue!!!
-
Hey Sunflowers - have fun with your sewing machine. I sew a lot - one of my (too) many hobbies
I'm trying right now to talk myself into getting rid of some of my stash of fabric. I tend to over purchase.
-
Enjoy sunflowers. I have many fond memories of my peddle singer. I loved to sew!
-
Glad to hear you are farting your brains out Blue. Sorry I've been AWOL just depressed. Not about the anti-slavery party winning in Wisconsin though. Sorry HL.
Edited- no politics. Still hate job love DH and all of you! -
((((Barbara)))) I'm so sorry you feel bad - I was hoping you were on your merry way with the new job situation - more work at home - not that you weren't with us so much because of depression. I do hope something can work against the depression. Keeping my best thoughts for you. Please PM me if you care to share more/have questions, etc...
You still have your sense of humor, though ("anti-slavery party" - which is true; back then, the northern democrats seemed to be the "pusilanimous pussyfooters" that they are today).
I just officially turned into a pumpkin at my job. I am possibly heading for a temporary assignment in a week or two. I am also doing volunteer work - and here I thought I couldn't do both! I'm surprised and pleased.
-
Congrats Athena - it feels SO GOOD to do things we thought we couldn't do.
Barbara - so sorry you have been keeping company with what Winston Churchill called "The Black Dog" - not a good companion. echoing our Lioness offering to be with you in a PM anytime, and hoping you will talk to someone about the Big D - it is NOT something to take lightly, really, there are many paths into more sunshine, and one of them will work for you. Sucky job makes it difficult, but even that can be doable, with help. REALLY. Even if you feel it is a temporary feeling, please talk to someone who can help. BC is enogh for any of us to deal with
I used to say if there was one illness I could "trade in" it would be Depression, now I would "return" bc, but that's after years of help, and great medication! Thinking of you.... -
Just popping in to wave 'hello'. I can still find this thread because it's in my Favorites.
I need to go back and read several pages to get up to date but noticed that blue is back ... good to see you here again!
Was on the deck late last night talking on the phone and my dogs had a great possum adventure. Turned into a people adventure trying to get the dogs back in the house. Get dog up on deck toward door ... dog bolts back down ... rinse and repeat. Was funny ... felt like a comedy skit before it was all over. Didn't help that possums must be the dumbest animals on the planet. Gave the thing several chances to get away but nope ... just sat there with it's mouth open staring at us and the dogs instead. No carnage ... thanks only to a chain link fence.
I have two new grandcats and I got to go along to pick them out and help get them settled. They are adorable and took over DD's house and decided they liked each other too within about an hour.
All in all I'm happy to report that all is 'boring' in my little corner of the world. I'm supposed to be grocery shopping right now but I hate it so I'm stalling as long as I can.
Sending hugs and good vibes to all that need them canine, feline and human.
-
Possums are dumb? Whodathunkit???????????
-
I thought we already knew that?
-
Possums sure a dumb. We had one lose her babies in our yard, and I would guess never knew. We took them to the local rescue place and were told lots of small possums come to them. I guess they never know if the babies fall out of the pouch!
