Just popped in to say I am boring
-
Rosemary - YES!!!!!
-
I think the baby possoms fall off her tail.... have you seen mama possoms with all the little babies hanging onto her tail with their tails????
I still can't stand possoms, though. They just look like great big rats to me....
-
Rosemary - great news!!!!
Poppy chased a possum on the front verandah the other night - boy did it take off. They are very active here at the moment - run across the roof all the time. They eat her Science Diet food if I forget to bring it in when I get home from work. Apparently the fact that we find possums to be dumb is of interest to others

Still trying to get my new pool pump - got the insurance money but the pool shop has been farting around - 2 weeks now - when will I get it!!! I'm pleased to say I'm getting an American pump - I find US products to be so much more reliable - like my big honky Whirlpool top loader - love it.
-
When we were first married we went to the Laundromat late one night and I saw what looked like a giant rat with a naked tail. Ugliest thing I ever saw. My DH told me it was a possum.
-
So they're ugly and dumb!
-
Yes possums are ugly and dumb. I think they have a pouch like marsupials but not sure.
-
Possums are marsupials (with a pouch), otherwise they would be oversized rodents, I guess! And they are pretty dumb, with a very small brain. But, to make up for their dumbness, they can very convincingly fake their own death*, and if that doesn't work (e.g. a predator thinks maybe a dead possum would taste just as good as a live one), they can exude a particularly unpleasant smell from their nether region.
*hence the expression "playing possum"
-
Happy Friday, BTW. Chief Bartender sends to say that she has a long list of specials. One is called: "Possum's Last Stand" and is said to be quite toxic.
-
Possums are a pest in New Zealand - they even have rewards for killing them - signs on trees all over. But they do have some special ones they use for their fur - make really lovely gloves and scarves etc.
-
I hate housework!!!!!
-
WAIT A MINUTE!!!!--------------I had an opossum as a pet and he was a very sweet animal......just sayin'. They are NorthAmericas only native marsupial.---------kad2kar

I worked at a wildlife center and raised baby possums. We got the really small ones when mom was hit by a car. The larger babies would most likely fall of mom's back when she was trying to escape predators. I am sure she notices the loss of a baby when she stops for a nose count but it would be difficult for her to know exactly where they baby fell off she would still have to take care of the others.
Possums are gentle affectionate creatures and only show their teeth and hiss when they are frightened. In my experience dogs hate possums, but cats usually love them. A cat will invite a possum to enter the house through the pet door. I have had it happen twice. I just through a towel over the possum's head and gently picked it up by the body, NOT THE TAIL, and released it outside.
Possums are not as smart as dogs or cats, but any species that has outlasted the dinosaurs is as smart as it needs to be. Who knows how they would have evolved if their opposable thumbs had been on their front feet instead of the back feet?

-
gotta go look for 'possums - don't think I've ever seen one! We do have lotsa wild turkeys wandering about - they kow it's not hunting season. Also coyotes ( at night) and I really do NOT like them) - they are creepy critters, and make an awful noise. Also lotsa wood chucks - boy, are they fat! Wonder if they're taking Arimidex....that's my excuse for looking like a woodchuck
-
I really don't have any experience with live possums-they seem to have a really hard time crossing the road in my area of town.

-
possom fur is great, though - I used to have a coat with possom fur on it - gorgeous and soooooo soft. I don't know if that was a "special" kind of possom as I've never touched one.
-
Turkeys and possums, same thing. One is stupid and ugly, the other is just a plain old turkey. Same intelligence level. I don't know if you realize what I'm talking about but I'm pmsl (pissing myself laughing). Told you it wouldn't take long for me to get into trouble. Gotta go look when I have nothing better to do, my fellow cutlets!
-
Bren ... how is Maggie doing?
Vet bills seem to have gotten much higher in the last few years. Jake just had a routine teeth cleaning plus a growth removed and biopsied and it was $650.00. We also did the blood tests because we don't really know anything about his history but still ... ack.
Do raccoons like brussel sprouts

Well that was strange. After I posted the left column on here disappeared completely. Just when you think it might be safe to tiptoe back into the water

I want to rant a little bit now. WTH is wrong with companies nowdays! Are they so greedy that they have rotted their brains out or what? Case in point ... chicken breast strips for dogs. Lots of people are trying to get away from the made in China stuff so we look for ones Made in the USA. And I found some. One would think the company (Tyson) would increase production and be happy for the extra business. But oh no! What they have done is not only more than doubled their price but are 'substituting' the crappy jerky stuff instead. Doggies are just going to have to get used to a different nightly treat. I'm sick of getting ripped off. And yes I understand supply and demand but I also know that they were able to make a good product and still make a profit at the old prices. They did not have to say 'oh goodie we have them desperate, let's stick it to them' on price and quality both. Grumble, grump

It's the Farm Bill, Wabbit. Republicans and moderate democrats from farm states demand huge subsidies for junk food item producers - and use threats to further cut the Food Stamp Program, which is also part of the Farm Bill, to browbeat any spineless democrat (of which there are too many) who dares to question corn subsidies and the like, into submissions and "yeas" for Big Farm.
Tax cuts for the rich don't help either. And, while I am on the topic, Bill Clinton (ie: Reagan lite) is a narcissist and an idiot.
Thank you for listening to my rant.:-)
And it's written "opossum" right?
-
Ladies please excuse the intrusion........you have hit upon a topic that my daughter and I have been discussing at length.......
I think corn is killing us.........well most grains are killing us and our pets.......
My daughter has just adopted a very cute little dog and she is feeding him "the raw meat diet"......that the very liberal lady had been feeding him that was running the dog rescue farm.........
the only thing she really feeds him cooked is eggs.........otherwise he lives on raw bones (that includes the marrow) and some raw meat.........
she told me what is amazing is that his food is completely process by his digestive system and his little doggie dodo is almost nonexistent........
process corn, wheat, rice is horrible for our pets and is horrible for us.........
if anyone is interested look up (The Specific Carbohydrate Diet)......
if we would stop feeding our children, grandchildren cold processed cereal and low fat milk or skim milk they would stop being classified as A.D.D.......and would be able to sit still and focus.......
but I degress.........
oh and one more thing before I depart...........
Bluester it really is good to see you doing better........
-
I believe the word may be spelled either possum or oppossum. Possum is dialect, I believe. As in, "Fry me up some possum."
-
Thank you shokk. Good to be back. Evil drug that Mirapex. Did wonders for my residual Pd symptoms but killed my spirit. My joint and back pain is back but so is my sense of humour, and my mind is working (well that could be disputed) again! I'm back to being a sarcastic broad instead of a zombie.
I usually cook for davirg and lilah. Free range innards and chicken. I think they are too domesticated for raw. For treats I give them dried liver, and yes WR, it is outrageously expensive.
-
They fry possums?
-
I have seen but not eaten possum barbecue, not fried possum. However in the old South where everything was fried (ask my mother in law) I am sure possum was fried.
Baxter eats only meat, no corn. Costs a fortune for his food.
-
Blue, your experience with that drug sounds like so many I have had with meds.....sigh! The bargains one is forced into with modern medicine.
I love all creatures great and small but I admit I have never seen a possum, and if I thought what I was seeing was a giant rat I would probably startle. :-)Edited out the rest. I am in an awful mood today (meaning irritable) - apologies in advance. I just posted a comment in the NYT on an unrelated topic in which I thank the heavens that I have cancelled my paper subscription to that publication. Sad, how journalism has deteriorated in recent years.
Thanks for listening to THIS rant. :-)
-
Shoot there IS no such thing as journalism anymore - they just report what the corporations that own them want known. It's truly disgusting. And the talking heads that are supposedly "news people" invest so much emotion into their "reporting" that it's all editorialism. No journalism in evidence anymore.

Ladies, you are the GREATEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just went to the mailbox this morning and what greeted me has made me humble. There are many, many cards there that I haven't read yet, but had to stop in and say you all have warmed my heart. I wish I could meet you all because you are a wonderful group and BC WILL NEVER get in the way of that. I've been to hell and back 3 times and you all have sustained me.
I love you ALL!!!!!!!
-
So sweet Blue. No cards from me as I'm not in the club, so I'll wish you all the best here. Now I have tears in my eyes for all the wonderful ladies here. Thank you all, this is what keeps me coming back to BCO.
-
Hi Everyone!
Just got back from running errands and walking Tank. It's supposed to start raining any minute now and rain for two days. Yikes! The grass is going to be so tall.
Blue .. We love you dear friend .. so glad you got the cards.
Joy .. I have the address for the card shower if you'd like it.
Riley .. Are the wildfires anywhere near you?
Mary .. Keeping you in my thoughts as you start your round of tests.
I hope everyone has a wonderful day,
Bren
