Molly: I did mean Bill Graham. He was the interim leader between Martin and Dion. What has Harper done to Ontario and how has he done more for the Western provinces? Can't just throw it out there without some examples. At least give me a chance to debate something of substance.
We did have a female PM at one time. We said Hello in the halls of Parliament when I had my kids on a tour there back in the late summer of '93. Kim Campbell was a very short term PM...a little over 4 months. She won the leadership and took over when Mulroney retired. An election was called in the Fall and she was defeated before ever being able to actually sit in Parliament as PM.
Lassie. I am not disputing that he was found in contempt by fellow Parliamentarians, I am suggesting that this should have been looked at by non-partisans. When you have 3 opposing parties that collectively hold a majority and are really looking for (hunting for) a nugget that they can put a spin on, get some traction and run with it, then they get what they have wanted all along...another election, it is hardly an unbiased, objective view.
Regarding prisons for unreported crime....I have never heard that term mentioned by Harper or anyone else. It doesn't even make any sense...mmmm maybe a CBC term...lol
Linda, Elizabeth May is a gutsy lady. Smart, articulate and very down to earth. She has a warmth and appeal but unfortunately her party doesn't hold much water and I really can't see her being at the helm of the country nor a viable representative on an international stage. I would like to see her hold a post of some sort though. She could keep some environmental issues in check.
BTW, I have voted both Liberal and Conservative in the past so I don't pledge allegiance to any particular party but this just seems like a no brainer to me. Haven't bought the Tory line or any line for that matter. Just looking at the facts...well as far as facts go when it comes to political spin!

Oops...just wanted to share one more thing. Here's is an overall synopsis of the debt.
-
I am off topic right now but wanted to share with you women that I just lost my beloved Daddy. He died at 1:30 Friday morning and I was with him- just him and me and it was so incredible. You all seem like friends - You all would have loved him - maybe not have agreed with his politics (very fair (a trial lawyer) but liberal, Democrat and a humanitarian. I will miss him so much.
He taught me so much about life. When I got diagnosed -part of me wanted to forgo tx - I had just lost my husband to leukemia and earlier lost my 2 year old daughter,Caroline- but I knew it would kill my Dad if I died. Now I realize I have much to live for and want to be there for my sons - Willy and Alex - and my new husband - my Mom and my sisters, and brothers.
Sorry if this isn't appropriate - but each one of you has a wonderful gift - and discourse is good.
Love and prayers - Ellie

(((ELLIE))) So sorry for your loss.

Ellie, I hope nothing is off-topic for this thread. I think that's the way Blue intended it.
I am so sorry to hear about the death of your dad. Dads really are special to us adult women, aren't they? He sounds like he was a wonderful person. Having just lost my mom a few weeks ago, I'm sending you special hugs today. {{{{Ellie}}}}

Ellie .. I am so very sorry for the loss of your dad. It leaves a gaping whole in our hearts ... my dad died two years ago, and I still miss him terribly.
Keeping you and your family in my thoughts,
Sending hugs,
Bren

Every loss is hard. Sending love.
-
Hey, Ellie, I'll bet I would have loved your dad. He sounds a lot like my own, who died in October. The emptiness of life without him will last. Acutely at first, then less so. But let him live on through your boys. Make sure each has something of your Dad's to remember him by.
I'm sorry for your loss.
-
Ellie, I am sorry you lost your Dad, but I am glad you were able to be with him. You have his memory forever.
-
Ellie - I'm so very sorry about the loss of your father. Like Anne said, he sounds a lot like my dad - even down to his profession. How wonderful your boys were able to have him in their lives.

Pickle -- This was an article in the Globe last August about "unreported crimes" on the rise (Stockwell Day and Vic Toews quoted).
Sorry, I still haven't figured out how to make this a hot link, maybe somebody else can?
Just wanted you to know Lassie wasn't making this up
.
-
Lindasa - could you try reposting the link? I cut and pasted, but it still didn't go through.
-
-
Athena, I looked for Lindasa's link and I'm not sure of what article exactly she was linking but I saw several at that site that concern the "unreported crime."
I see Linda figured out the problem - the s at the end of the link doesn't belong there. Here's an active link:
Edited because I see Linda found the problem before I did.
-
Thanks River! Still trying to figure out just how anyone would know that "unreported crimes" are going up
. Unfortunately, we're subject to a great deal of innuendo and unsubstantiated "facts" masquerading as opinion. Sound familiar?
-
((Ellie)) I'm so sorry about your father.......
Took test and found it interesting. Like Athena, I found a lot of the questions a bit simplistic and also a bit black and white but is that not the nature of such quizes? Anyrate, I pushed on.......
Economic Left/Right -8.75
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian -7.28
Can't imagine that surprises anyone. . . . .
Thought re the contempt thing: Disclaimer I am not Canadian though my father was. . . Anyrate, it is a not uncommon legal manuvere to play chicken with requirements/orders to produce documents by stalling, stalling, stalling and then at the very last second, shoving 10s of thousands of pages at your opponant claiming the soughtafter information is "in there." In the US, many judges do not look kindly on such tactics. I guess its not always a winning tactic in Canada either.
-
Athena, I just wanted to mention re "Political Compass" that most quizzes like that don't have what would be my precise answer so I just go with the closest one. Also on the quiz I just go with my gut, "if the world ran according to my dreams" answer, which is why I test so close to Gandhi. In real life nobody has ever compared me to Gandhi and in real life I am pragmatic enough to know that my Utopia will never be. Although my heart is way to the left on "leftie" sites I am considered a pragmatist, which is a slur to many liberals. All of this started as my attempt to say that I agree with you that the questions, etc aren't very valuable. It's just a little bit of goofy fun.
-
Lindasa, that does sound familiar.
3monstmama, hello sister leftie. Yes that is a familiar tactic. I would have to do a lot of studying to try to determine where the greater truth lies regarding the contempt charge.
-
Athena
I should have posted sooner because most of what I would have said was said more eloquently by River Rat. As someone who sees no black and white in life, only gray, I have yet to see a quiz or evaluation form that fits exactly how I feel. I go with the answer that comes the closest and with something like this, just do it for fun.
-
Linda thanks for the link. I wasn't suggesting that Lassie made it ip. I sincerely had never heard it before. Not sure how they would ever derive #'s on "unreported" crime. That's why I questioned it...seems ridicuolous to me but then again...it's Stockwell Day...lol
-
Pickle -- remember when Rick Mercer suggested a referendum asking Stockwell to change his name to Doris?? I'm glad he's getting out of politics
.
Hugs, Linda
-
So no surprise here but I did the vote compass and am socially liberal and fiscally conservative. I had to research the party leaders for a couple days in order to form an opinion of each prior to taking the poll.
-
Linda. Glad he's getting out too. I never liked him and I must say, Rick Mercer was bang on. Doris is a much more suitable name but then again I'd hate to insult other Doris' out there.!
-
I agree about the fun part. I just have an aversion for standardized tests :-) I see black, white and gray, making this test even more difficult.
-
I'm sorry about your Dad Ellie. (((((Ellie)))))
-
Ok, so I would be interested in hearing opinions about Stockwell and why what he says matters and whether you Canadian sisters agree that unreported crimes are a big problem. And why, in Canada, would people fail to report crimes (I can tell you why in some countries, but I don't think those reasons would apply).
