Rain, rain, rain.....and more of it, but I think by tomorrow I'll not wake up to the pattter on the roof.  8:30 a.m. and still rather dark outside.  Good thing I have lots I can do inside.  Temps will be in the low 70's and that is really, really good.  All that will change when the rain stops I think.  We seem to be totally different from last yr.  The crops went in on time and then and proceeded directly into the process of burning up from triple degree temps and no water.  The crops are in this year and they seem to have had nothing but water since....sigh !!!  Nothing to blame it on though.

@Blue Dahlia - I hope you keep posting beautiful vintage dresses and pictures of Jim Morrison. Even when you are feeling miserable, those two things cannot help but remind you that the world is full of beauty. *sigh and smile*

Well, that depends on what you call cold. It might be close to freezing overnight but in a perfect fall, it is sunny, and warm during the day. Some years there is a repeat of summer in October where it is quite warm during the day and others you most definitely want a sweater. The canal where people skate in winter won't be even close to frozen but it is scenic.  The Governor Generals Footguards (the ones with the bear skin hats and the red tunics) won't be doing their changing of the guard ceremonies at Parliament Hill in October - I liked them better when my son was one of them.

Yorkie -- If you have an extra day or two, be sure to visit Montreal (by car, train or bus - less than 2 hours, I think).  Montreal has fantastic old world AND new world architecture, fabulous food and a wonderful ambience.

Forgot to say Welcome to fullst!  I agree -- love those dress pics, which remind me of those that I wore oh, so long ago!  And yes, my mother used to make dresses for me -- I had a bursting closet-ful. (Youngest child, spoiled rotten, what can I say?!)  And I can still remember the scratchiness of those darn crinolines when I sat down.Surprised

this is so strange - it's STILL RAINING.  No kidding - I've never seen anything like this.  Was driving on I-91 yesterday, rain so hard traffic was moving at about 30 mph ( 65 is speed limit) and couldn't see more than 10 feet in front of car, too much for wipers to do any good.  Supposed to continue for a few more days.

Feel SO BADLY for the fire fighters in AZ - what a tragedy.  Reading the fire was caused by lightening -

Strange happenings too - ya know how in heavy rain eearthworms appear on all the concrete surfaces - well, there are NO earthworms on any driveway, sidewalk - question: can earthworms drown?  This is not a rhetorical question.....

A new post from Margaret and Helen:

If my Vagina shot bullets, could I conceal it from Rick Perry and John Kasich?

    by Helen Philpot

Margaret, if my vagina could shoot bullets it would have fewer regulations on it.  Plus, it would be easier to conceal from idiot politicians like Rick Perry and John Kasich.  And while that might be a bit graphic for even me, it’s a sad but very true statement.  We women in Texas (I can’t speak for the women of Ohio) are madder than hell and I think it’s time again for another Ann Richards to come make things right – God rest her soul.  Years ago she said that government should “open the doors and let the people in.”  Well ready or not, here we come.  And this time, we’re bringing a Harvard grad named Senator Wendy Davis.

For years now, Governor Perry has waged a war on women based on conversations he has with God and his pastor.  It’s a given that Rick’s god speaks to him in a male voice.  I am sure he has never considered the alternative.  According to his god, women can’t be trusted to make healthcare decisions.  As a result Perry has decided to make it hard for poor women (and soon almost any woman) to even have access to healthcare at all – problem solved.  When you gut funding for family planning, force doctors to perform unnecessary procedures on women (and only women) and then shut down dozens of women’s health clinics… well let’s just say it’s not a stretch to suggest that Rick Perry hates women.  But as far as his desire to end abortion, he doesn’t have a clue.  All of his efforts will simply decrease the number of safe, legal abortions and increase the number of unsafe, illegal abortions.

I am old enough to remember what happens to women who don't have access to safe, legal abortions.  I lost a few friends in those days.  But, I guess if you don’t like women, killing a few is of no concern.  Can you imagine the outrage if we were legislating a penis?  Would the out-crying of voters be called an unruly mob then?  Not a chance.   It would be called the Texas Legislature.

Rick Perry, bless his heart, doesn’t have the good sense God gave a goose – otherwise known as a C minus average at Texas A&M University.  That boy hasn’t had a light on in the attic since someone in kindergarten told him he had nice hair.  Perry says that A&M shaped him into the person he is today.  What shape is obtuse?  He earned a C in U.S. History, a D in Shakespeare, and a D in the principles of economics.  Perry even got a C in gym which might explain why he finds joy in picking on defenseless, poor women who can’t fight back.  I don’t even know what to say about his C in animal breeding.  If the man can’t even figure out how animals reproduce, why do we expect him make rational decisions about women’s reproductive freedoms?

Unfortunately Rick is not the only Governor who has taken up gynecology on the side. Over in the great state of Ohio, a certain Mr. Kasich seems to be fine with keeping helpful health information from rape victims.  And in North Carolina they plan to tell 7th graders that if you have an abortion, you’ll never be able to have any more children.   Hmmm.   Lying to rape victims and children.   Republicans everywhere must be so proud.

You know what gets me, Margaret?  These holier-than-thou types who have to lie and mislead because people don’t want to buy their brand of religion are nothing more than hypocritical bullies.

And for those women out there, who think this is really about saving innocent babies, let me assure you it’s not.   Republican politicians have passed legislation to define pregnancy as beginning at fertilization which means most types of birth control are now defined as causing abortions.  You might want to think about that really hard.  Are they saving babies or just calling you a slut?  Honestly, Perry and Kasich think women run to Planned Parenthood like it was a 7-Eleven.  I’ll take a soda, a bag of chips and an abortion please.

To Perry, Kasich and the other asshat politicians who want to regulate women’s bodies I have one thing to say:  Get your religion out of my vagina and back into your heart where it belongs.  I mean it.  Really.

Oh Sunny- my gf flew into Vermont today for a family reunion. From the inferno on the West Coast to the monsoons of New England? Is it sticky hot or coolish?

I'm dog sitting for friends today. They left our 100 degree day for the 113 inferno in the valley. This is the hottest, and also muggiest (as muggy goes on West Coast) day thus far of our heat wave. It will be over soon, but so early this year.

I thought those hotshots came from my fed agency, but apparently local governments have gotten into that business. A real tragedy for their families and such a horrible way to leave this earth.

Thanks for the tips about Ottawa everybody. DH is going to a conference but we're scheduling two to three days for sightseeing. I definitely would like to take that train to Montreal.

    Welcome aboard, fullst!

This weather is insane! Soon the Weather Channel will be the most popular channel in the world. We will all have to keep current on what new weather hell is coming our way! Surprised

And wanted to add how tragic that those brave firefighters died. Cry

Kam - humid.  Typical for most of NE in the summer - and this rain is making it worse...luckily I'm in the "under populated" western MA hilltowns - so there's always a breeze - and very little concrete - NO tall buildings - lotsa trees, so it's pleasant.  But definitely WET WET WET...still wondereing about those earthworms - why aren't they coming out of the ground????

Sunny, could it be pollution or something toxic in the environment? Maybe similar to what is wiping out amphibians and bees.

    From the AccuWeather site:

Researchers hypothesize several reasons why heavy rain storms bring crawlers out of their soil homes.

For years scientists seemed to think the only reason earthworms came to the soil surface after a good rain was to prevent drowning in their water-filled burrows.

"This is not true as earthworms breathe through their skins and actually require moisture in the soil to do so," said Dr. Chris Lowe, Lecturer in Waste and Environmental Management, University of Central Lancashire in Preston, United Kingdom.

Earthworms are unable to drown like a human would, and they can even survive several days fully submerged in water.

Soil experts now think earthworms surface during rain storms for migration purposes.

"It gives them an opportunity to move greater distances across the soil surface than they could do through soil," said Dr. Lowe. "They cannot do this when it is dry because of their moisture requirements."

There's more but I thought this might be your explanation, Sunny.  You've had a LOT of rain so the soil must be very moist.

Welcome fullst.....I haven't been here too long myself, but long enough that it feels like home.  Ah....Helen and Margaret....a huge breath of fresh air.  Always so amazing to me what passes for brain power with some people.  If you are being purely analytical....then what your religion thinks doesn't matter one whit.  It is not up to anyone there  -- it is not up to me, but I'm glad ( not that I need it at my age ) to have the right to make my own decisions regardless of what some duped man from the cave thinks about it.  Let him stay in the cave.....I have better things to do.

Still quite wet here.  I made a batch of potpourri and put it on the stove and in a little crock-pot just because I got tired of the smell of dampness every time I opened the door.  It's cool enough to have the doors and windows open....so more tolerable now with the scents in the air.

Hi all.  Haven't been on much.  Am here in Vermont with DD doing wedding stuff, and watching contractors slowly put on a roof and slowly finish the new family room.  I'm sharing the computer with DD, so I don't get on as much as I'd like.  I am sick of the rain, too.  It's mud season all over again.

OK, my latest nutty thing - I've been going barefoot -almost everywhere in Vermont.  Everyone thinks I'm crazy - my kids, my husband, people in the street, but it is Vermont, so no body really cares.  I've been doing this for about three weeks now, and my knees haven't felt so good in years.  I can go up and down stairs without clinging to rails and without a twinge.   My feet, which the podiatrist said should never be without orthotics and ankle support, protested at first, but they are also feeling better than they have in years. Talked to my orthopedist who said, as long as it's working, keep it up.

Trying to get back to writing, but it's hard.  On page 298 - goal, 400 pages or less.

Maybe you need to wear these kind of shoes Alexandria:

My hiking partner had this style on yesterday and they seem to work on the rocks, etc..  I wouldn't dare with my feet, but if you like barefoot.

My gf is in Vermont as of today for her family reunion.  Hope the rain lets up for you guys!

Hi to everyone, Have spent hours catching up on this thread. Love the pictures, the inserts, the jokes, the camaraderie. Have been away for a little over two weeks on a vacation with my sister, some grandchildren and a niece. We had a wonderful time together at the beach for a week then dropped my grandson off at home and took off for Ontario with all the girls. Main destination: Stratford, Ontario, home of Justin Bieber. Side destination: Niagra Falls. All the kids were able to choose one thing they most wanted to do and we managed to make everyone happy. My sis and I just enjoyed watching the younger generation interact and bond and helping them make life long memories. BUT .... it is good to be home. Took the last two to the airport yesterday and then enjoyed a visit with a good friend from my high school days.

So much has gone on here ... too much to comment on. Susan, how you have surprised me! Ain't love grand?? Blue, I have loved the dressy pictures. How I remember my mom whirring away on her sewing machine making dresses for my sister and me. Wedding plans, house hunting, moves being made, books being written ... what a busy crew you all are. Athena, sounds like everyone is missing hearing from you. Hope you will touch base with us soon.

PET scan today, results tomorrow, scanxiety tonight.

Hugs for all of you. Glenna
