Good afternoon everyone,
This is a picture of the turtle I ran over with the mower this morning. I checked him out carefully (I was wearing gloves) and he seemed to be okay. I put him in a safe spot by the fence.
Kam .. sure hope you're okay. That was really scary.
Anne .. thanks for the info on the spray.
hugs,
Bren

C for C -- I am sure a huge amt. of Repugs ( the truly well-educated ) were thrilled to vote for Obama. Just for openers, the 8 yrs. of Baby Bush antics ( yes I know he did manage a couple of good things ) were enough to make many look for a crack...somewhere, anywhere to drop through. I still recall my relatives towards the end could no longer defend Bush at all, and had such grim set looks on their face. For them it was disgracing the Republican party so badly.
Brin..glad your turtle is ok. We have a habit of stopping for anything on the road and letting it pass, or as in the case of turtles....helping them pass. I have been fortunate to not have ( to my knowledge ) ever run over anything though I did hit a bird in flight once. I've always told myself....it could have been old and sick if its radar didn't do any better. At least it was over quickly.

Jackie .. I almost hit a bird the other day while he was flying. I was in the car and there was nothing I could do. I was so afraid I might have hurt the bird.
I wish I had my camera with me yesterday when I was in the fields and saw another turtle. He was smaller and cuter than the one almost killed today.
Kam .. how are you feeling?
Blue .. same question for you .. also, how's your left side doing today? I sure wish that stimulator adjustment created faster results!
It's warming up this afternoon, just about time to turn on the A/C. I've been lucky so far and just have to run it for a couple of hours in the afternoon.
hugs,
Bren

A funny thing has happened - I much prefer reading to TV these days. It cleanses the mind. I can even look at pictures of Palin and Bachman and just pretend, for a nanosecond, that those clowns are not for real...
HL - What an amazing DH you have - but then we knew that. Send him a huge hello.
I found another positive side of, if not condemnation then surgery - I am back to my pre-cancer weight -yey! Most this is because I have almost no apetite, but as a lioness spending most of her days under an acacia tree, that is not a bad thing.
The summer is actually enjoyable when you are inactive. The 6-7 pm air is wonderful for a walk.
Crazyforcarrots - lol!

Morning all.
I am having a morning doing nothing, its Sunday here. DH has gone to church but my joints too sore to move and LE is really playing up.
Good chance to listen to the radio and a very interesting programme on the influence of the media and how they are making issues out of things that should not even be news worthy. Some Government Ministers have been asked a question, not really answered or couldn't, then the reporter makes a huge issue of the answer. I am very tired of our media who think we don't have a brain-maybe they are the brainless ones- and can't understand anything. Many could have a job with Fox.
Blue I love the pictures.

Alyson.....you are so right about the media....here is something I just read. The whole of Fox News should be bannished from the air waves ( won't happen, of course ) for the idiotic stupid drivel they are allowed to spew forth.
Proving once again that Fox News commentators aren’t qualified to speak in public, John Stossel makes some ridiculous and historically inaccurate comments on “Fox & Friends” May 30th.
Stirring the pot once again on the national debt, Stossel and ‘friends’ discuss different ways to bring it down. One suggestion? Get rid of the Department of Agriculture. His exact, exasperated, ‘jeez-people-why-didn’t-you-think-of-this-yourselves’ words?
“Agriculture? Farmers do that, you don’t need bureaucrats!”
“Farmers do that,” you say? Let’s take a look at what the U.S. Department of Agriculture really does. On the USDA website is readily available a list of all the programs under their care. Disaster assistance and insurance for farmers and ranchers are two of the programs offered. SNAP (also known colloquially as “food stamps”) and WIC (or Women, Infants, and Children) are another two very well-known programs upon which millions of Americans depend every day. Various environmental programs such as wildfire prevention are also controlled by the USDA. And of course, let us not forget food security. The USDA is tasked with ensuring the safety of the nation’s food supply, arguably the one thing most vulnerable to terrorist attack.
But get rid of it, let the farmers handle all that, says Stossel.
Another suggested cut? The Commerce Department. What does Stossel have to say about this department?
“Commerce just happens.”
It just happens, people. Why bother with the Commerce Department? NOAA, for one. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, our national ‘weather people,’ are under the Department of Commerce. Since they are the ones who let people know when they may be facing severe, life-threatening weather, they are kind of important. The Census Bureau also happens to be under the Commerce Department, and since much of our federal budget is based on Census data, this is also pretty important. And what about that essential aspect of commerce–innovation? The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office is under the direction of the Department of Commerce as well.
But the gem of the clip comes towards the end when, speaking of government benefits, Stossel employs two of Fox News’ favorite tactics in one thought–lies and the phrase “welfare state”:
“When people are needy, you want them helped. But think about the Depression. That was before there was any welfare state at all. How many people starved? No one.”
I’m sure I don’t have to point out the inaccuracy here. Of course, Stossel didn’t have a choice but to correct his ‘mistake’ later on his blog, where it was spun to minimize the obvious misinformation presented on the show. Stossel acknowledges that historians note there were deaths due to starvation numbering in the hundreds in New York City alone. However, he goes on to cite a PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences) article from 2009 entitled “Life and death during the Great Depression.” From the article, Stossel cites the following:
Population health did not decline and indeed generally improved during the 4 years of the Great Depression, 1930–1933, with mortality decreasing for almost all ages, and life expectancy increasing by several years[...]
However, had Stossel bothered to read the article beyond the abstract (something he would have learned to do had he not “daydreamed through half [his] classes at Princeton”), he would have noted the most likely reasons behind this statement. First, the study averaged the entire population, not just one part, meaning that those who were still economically sound during the Great Depression were grouped with those who were worst off. Second, because the times of economic prosperity are associated with “increases in smoking and alcohol consumption, reductions in sleep, and increases in work stress related to overtime and faster and more strenuous labor” as well as “increases in atmospheric pollution, which has well-documented short-term effects on cardiovascular and respiratory mortality,” it is only reasonable that during an economic downturn there would be reverses to these conditions.
Therefore, it is not that “hunger was rare enough that health generally improved,” as he claims, but rather that health gets worse in a good economy.
Of course, ignoring facts is par for the course when it comes to Faux News.
Talk about dumber than mud.

Just read that Jean Stapleton passed on. She played Edith on Archie Bunker. I lived in Detroit when I first started watching the show and it was a million laughs and then some. Always loved the heart of gold that Archie had and worked so hard not to show. Anyway....Jean Stapleton was 90.

Rest in Peace, Edith!

I loved Jean Stapleton. She played a lot of good roles. Of course, Edith was her signature role but I still rewatch you've got mail every now and then, and she was so much fun it in. Sigh. So sad to watch the actors who shaped my view of media disappear.

Alyson - I hope the programme you heard also emphasized that ALL media is now owned by large, LARGE corporations, who have only the "bottom line" in sight - money. When "the media" picks up on a small thing, and tries to make it HUGE, HUGE, HUGE, they are looking to increase viewers, listeners, increase advertising revenue, just a vicious circle. I also hold that model responsible for this crazy "celebrity culture" created - where someone who has done or accomplished nothing, nada, zilch, becomes "famous" for being, well, "famous" - which is why, along with Athena, I really don't pay any attention to the "popular culture."
Athena - happy reading - and walking, and HEALING, think of you when I read Vogue, Harpers, and todays NY York Times T magazine.
Little things. I have a huge wax hoya which has been blooming, again, and I gotta tell you if you haven't yet smelled a wax hoya in bloom, then you're missing the most delicious smell of chocolate. Go Figure. But really, those gorgeous wax like cluster of blooms smells like chocolate.
Happy Libby - Happy First Sunday which won't be followed by a Monday

Was it John Lennon who said: "Tomorrow will be cancelled because of lack of interest."

Megyn Kelly delivered a righteous smackdown to her Faux Noise buddies ... LOL. Because this time it was HER life choices they were attacking with a bunch of made up bullcrap. She showed she has the capability to do real research and refute phony 'facts' when she wants to. Let's hope this will inspire her to do more of the same with their other ignorant and distorted brand of 'news'. Not holding my breath though. And that guy (forgot his name, not going back to look) with his smirky 'look at the little lady get mad' look on his face should tell any woman all they need to know about men like him.
Liberal is a good word. We should never have let them redefine it as an insult. It's a compliment. And honestly, conservatives need to protect their 'brand' also. The far right is giving it a very ugly meaning too with many of their extreme views.

RIP - Edith. We have a lot to be grateful for, I agree with Alexandria - Norman Lear was a real leader. Does everyone know he also started People for the American Way. He saw early what was going to happen politically in this country.
Also loved her in You've Got Mail - but MOSTLY, I adored the kitchen created for her

Meant to say THANK YOU - for the wonderful quote from HRC. So true.
Blue - hope you are continuing to heal, feeling better. Watch out for HUGE thumder boomers coming up the east coast today.
