Sweet - beautiful! Badger, good to see you! Octo - wow. What a trip! Scottie - how was the new ballpark?
We found out why the box turtle looked so cranky. I spotted him this past weekend in the garden and he actually had his head out of his shell. That's when I noticed he had this terribly large growth on the side of his head. Some quick Internet research showed it was probably an ear abscess which is very painful and can cause death because it's too swollen and painful for them to eat or drink. More research turned up the name of a vet licensed by the state to treat wild animals so we picked him up and took him to the vet. They were able to drain the abscess but it will be several days before he's ready to be released back. Poor guy. I was glad we were able to help. Can't wait till he's ready to be picked up so we can return him to his garden. It seems empty without him.
Rolled my ankle stepping on a sneaky and vicious garden hose this weekend so I put some KT tape on it and have been resting it. It felt better today so I went to the fitness center today. I thought the elliptical would be gentler on the ankle then running so got a good 50 minute elliptical session in.
-
What a good human you are, Nats!!!!
-
Thanks, but all I did was provide a car ride. The real heros are the volunteer vets and wildlife rehabbers who take care of injured wildlife on their own time using their own $$$ and whatever $$ they can scrape up from donations.
-
BADGER: SO GLAD TO SEE YOU AGAIN!!! And you joined a gym!
Cheryl: Lol on the sailor talk!
Sweet: Great picture and you have a pretty daughter.
Ruth: I'm always inspired by your WWW and exercise class pictures.
Teese: Have fun with your new treadmill.
Nats: That's awesome what you have done for the turtle! What's his name?
Walked/ran Monday, Tuesday, and tonight. Mall walked last night.

Back home from the beach so I walked 40 minutes on our rail trail. Our littlest one was born on the 4th of July. He'll be four. He is benefiting from having older parents (unlike my first two- now 18, 15). There is a huge inflatable waterslide in our yard for his bday party tomorrow. We could never have afforded to rent one 10 years ago! He and my DH are trying it out as I write. I am happy to be sidelined due to recovering from surgery. The teens are out at work so they'll get to try it tomorrow!
Ruth- thanks for clearing those class names up for me.
Nats- you are good to help that little critter
-
Falconer, when I was a kid, wished I had a 4th of July birthday - my favorite holiday, next to Christmas of course. Happy 4th on the 4th to your littlest and if you enjoy fitness with a group, joining a gym is terrific, in my opinion. I also think if you have a wide range of interests, like yoga, weights/pump, step, aqua, etc..it's cost effective. Many gyms will offer a free pass to see if you like it before joining, so when given clearance to exercise, give it a go and see what you think. Mary, your astute kindness has given new life to shy guy turtle - kudos to you. HeidiHill, oh yes to living on campus,DS can't wait to move out, yet after yesterdays difficult 3rd, and last part of the physics exam - a bit down. DS exams were biology, physics and design technology. He has now completed all exams, needs to return books back to school on Monday and, like in your home, the wait for results in late August. Ruth love the WWW and POUND photo.
Have a good start to the weekend everyone!
Pilates at noon and body balance/flow tonight.
Edited to add: Sweet, love the photo, very pretty - all of you and the dresses divine!

ff for port placement today. Did get up early enough for my bike ride and a light breakfast before the6am cutoff.
-
I have 5 days in a row that I'm not going into the office. I will be working on a few things, one of which is an IRS response to the bill they sent me. I actually can prove I don't owe the money, so all is well. Just have to craft the response and copy a few items to attach. I will be doing some other work over the weekend, but nothing major. I do need a few articles of cycling attire, as things are getting less than pristine.
I will be training big time this weekend as the BIG RIDE is just 2 weeks from now. I did 15 miles last night after work, and will get in about 25 today. That will kick things off nicely.
Today, I am doing some fun things including going into Seattle later for a bit of shopping and then meeting a friend for wine and jazz. It should be great fun. I may be having friends for dinner tomorrow. If not, I am heading out to do 60 miles and get my sorry hide in gear. If they do come, I will do a much shorter and save the longer ride for Sunday. Plus, get my place in shape.
We should be having the most glorious weather too. Highs in the mid 70s with lows in the 50s. Perfect for enjoying these endless summer evenings. Because I did a ride earlier yesterday, I got to sit out on my deck with a fashion magazine and drink. So wonderful. Need to do this more often.
Hope everyone has a GREAT 4th!!!! - Claire

Hi everyone. Nats, that's so sweet and I'm sure if the turtle could speak you would get a huge thanks. Maybe s(he) will bob her head when you return him to the garden.
You all are motivating me. The weather here is very iffy as it's rainy season and Florida is also the lightning capital of the U.S. so it can strike at any point, rain or no rain! After I post this will put on some exercise clothes and finally get over and join 24 Hr Fitness (thanks badger as I'm following you!) It's free under Silver Sneakers so why not use it on these very hot and humid, rainy, days. Hopefully can do something at the gym as I do have the torn meniscus in one knee and the other is not very happy either. Oh well, need to do what I can.
Later sculpted friends.

patoo - what is silver sneakers?
Sang at a funeral of a 32 year old woman this morning, a nurse who died from an overdose. What a sad sad time for her friends and family. Same age as my daughter. How short life can be sometimes, made me want to reach out to my kids and let them know how much they are loved.
While I didn't exercise yesterday, I did make good choices about what I put into my body, and this morning got up and did a full classical stretch. Baby steps. Hoping to get a walk in later.
-
I haven't walked all week. Dealing with the guilt. First excuse was it was too wet, which it was, and the pavilion where I walk had large puddles of water and slick mud. Then it was a doctor appointment and shopping. No excuses left. I went over to the pavilion this morning (about 8) and got a good start, but about 15 minutes in I got nauseous. The air felt heavy, so I new it was humid. I drank some water, but didn't feel any better. I finally gave up and came home. H told me it was the heat index. At 8 am it was 90 degrees. He doesn't think it's a good idea for me to be out in the heat unless I go at 5 am. I'm not sure I want to be out in the dark.
I vacuumed/swept and mopped the entire house this morning while H mowed. After a light lunch, rest & shower, we drove to Lowe's. He bought some weed killer and wasp spray and chatted with some veterans while I walked the store. Then we went over to Best Buy and bought a new TV. When we got home I washed two loads of laundry and he started dinner.
I managed to get a little over 2 miles in. So, I guess I will count that as exercise. I just don't know if I am going to be able to keep up with my walks during the summer. I guess I could look into joining a fitness club, but I'm not sure it would be cost efficient. Right now I am only walking. I am not ready for weights, Pilates or yoga.
-
You could walk inside at a mall (we do that sometimes in the dead of winter for the opposite reason). I did some abs, did a dog walk and bought groceries (I'm having company over the 4th of July).
-
It looks like I hadn't posted for about 9 days so took a bit to catch up with everyone. I always enjoy everyone's pictures - exercise related or vacation related! Sweet, lovely family picture and your daughter looks just like you!
Octogirl I bet you had a fabulous time. How was the scuba? Did you have good sightings? I adore snorkeling. I think Ruth said beach was her favorite place and I am in that same boat - beach and water baby and the closest I can get to that in the midwest is Lake Michigan. Good enough beach, but not good for snorkeling!
VelvetP it is hard to walk in the humidity and heat. I really find a bike ride is good in hot weather because you create your own breeze. And just like Ruth said, if you have a mall nearby, that always works. I use that in the winter more than summer.
Falconer, that waterslide must be tested. You cannot have young children participating without two adults doing the safety test!
Teese - hope the port placement was seamless.
Let's see, what exercise have I done in 9 days - thank you Argus app for tracking. 15 minute walk at lunch, 23 minute walk at lunch, 13 minute walk at lunch. (Can you tell we had lovely 70 degree weather last week). Last Saturday I mowed an hour and 10 minutes, walked 36, weeded for about an hour. Sunday evening went for a walk with my husband after dark-30 minutes. Then I skipped exercise this workweek until today. One hour trail walk with my husband.
-
Velvet. . .all steps count. 2.5 Miles on the dreadmill today, which really isn't all that dreadful considering the weather outside.

pat01, under Medicare with some I guess, 'Advantage' plans (I have United Healthcare but I know Humana also has it) they have "Silver Sneakers" which gives us free membership in several gyms. I'm signed up at Anytime Fitness and now 24/7 Fitness. Not sure about elsewhere around the country but here those gyms mainly just have the machines; Anytime Fitness does not really have any classes. Found out 24/7 Fitness has classes for Silver Sneakers members, M-F; 20 minute sessions from 10am to noon so will go take a look next week to see. May have to do more gym workouts as here it is hot and humid by 9am until about 8pm. Will also get back into swimming and many water sports. Pools are also high 80 degrees so not that refreshing but doable.
Night sculpted friends.
-
Thinking of you Teese. Hope the port placement went well.
Pat: So sad about the young nurse. Your voice gave comfort to those at the funeral.
Hi Everyone! Pushed mowed for 1 hour and 45 minutes. Now I'm getting ready to do a little housework.
-
Silver Sneakers offers classes here at the YMCA and at several of the other Fitness Centers.
-
Pat, I'm sorry about your friend. So sad.
Velvet, those steps count. Sometimes I make 10,000 steps with 0 active minutes on the Fitbit. I still say 10K steps or 2 miles in your case is being active.
Finally dragged myself to the gym yesterday and went on the treadmill and did weights. It is no fun there when it's hot (no aircon) but it's cooled down now. I decided not to give up my membership as they still have other options for group fitness. I may have to bike further to try them out but I suppose that will be more exercise, if I actually do it. Then I went to a milonga (tango club) with SIL last night.
-
Good morning everyone! Falconer, your little one is having what we call a "golden" birthday. It's when your age = the date of the month. So turning 4 on the 4th is golden! And how wonderful for him to have fireworks every year on his b-day.
We have two gyms in town. They're both 24-7 chain fitness clubs but neither has organized classes. I chose the one that's not by the grocery store. When I walk to the store, I always look in the plate-glass windows at the people working out. Didn't want to be on the other side of that gaze LOL.
It's a pretty morning, breezy under a Carolina blue sky. Headed out for a walk.
Happy Canada Day to our neighbors to the north! Congrats on your sesquicentennial.
-
Heidi, I did not know the young woman who passed or her family, but I sing in the church choir which is how I happened to be there. Her Aunt gave a beautiful eulogy poem that ended with "your struggle is done". So often when I think of addiction I think of people who are down and out on their luck, but this family could have been my own, and her being the same age as my daughter it hit home.
Velvet, all walking counts! Walk in your home if you have to, I often walk when I am on the phone to get steps in. Or if you do not have a mall near you, have your hubby go to lowes with you so you can walk - I know my DH could go to a home improvement store nearly every day of the week!
Thanks for the silver sneakers info, still have another year or so to go before medicaid, but I will look into it then. I do belong to an anytime fitness which is partially covered by my health insurance. But as you said they do not have classes. I used to belong to the Y and loved spinning and pilates, but the Y membership was not under my insurance, so I switched to Anytime fitness. Even without the classes, this gym has a nice feel to it. I have been on "hiatus" for almost a year(out of laziness mostly). Need to start back again, maybe even today. Walked 3 miles in the neighborhood yesterday, but the deer flies are brutal, so I may walk on the treadmill today at the gym. Got up this morning and did classical stretch, how stiff I have become these last few months. Still making good food choices, down a pound this morning.
-
Pat, good work on the eating well. Very sad indeed about the young woman at your church. There is a lot of addiction arising from prescription drugs, so I think the picture of addiction is changing, and sadly, if you are prone to it, it doesn't matter whether you are taking substance to numb your emotional pain, your physical pain, or for recreation.
Badger, that's a Door County blue sky! I know Wonderland calls it Carolina Blue but I always associate it with Door County which always looks so clear and blue to me.
I think I am ready to join a no-frills gym. My husband joined Charter Fitness - it really is $49 sign up and $10 a month. I don't think they have classes but they have all the machines. He has been enjoying it. I may wait until the cold weather sets in because I really prefer to exercise out doors in the summer. And note that "regular" insurance sometimes sponsors gym memberships at fairly reasonable rates. I have BCBS and they have some programs for $25 a month.
Planning my exercise day. I was going to lunch with a friend but she woke up sick, so I saved some calories and can burn some off too.

Hi all:
First of all, my big announcement: I am officially retired!! WooHoo! Now I will have more time to go to the gym and won't be able to use work as an excuse not to
TwoHobbies: The scuba in Papua New Guinea was amazing! (I didn't dive in Australia, though I have in the past). Best sightings: sharks (I love watching sharks...though it was a bit disconcerting that they came rather close when I was snorkeling...they usually don't get close to divers on scuba, and the only ones I saw on scuba were off in the distance....) but I wasn't too worried, these were smallish (less than six feet long, mostly under four feet) reef sharks. I also LOVED the healthy soft corals in PNG, and of course, finding Nemo (clown anemone fish) was easy as he and his buddies were everywhere. I will get around to posting a few underwater pics eventually.
Hubby and I are headed out to Monterey today to enjoy cool coastal weather for Fourth of July week, and so I can decompress post-retirement. My exercise will be beach walks. Right now my exercise is cleaning up the house (am I the only one who hates to go on a trip when the house is a mess?) and packing...
Hugs all
Octogirl
-
Congrats Octogirl. Happy retirement.
-
I checked into Silver Sneakers in my area. I was told I had to be 65 years old. A friend of my husband belongs and he told him that he & his wife both belong to Silver Sneakers at their local fitness place and they aren't charged anything. I don't know if that applies to every senior.
-
octogirl- congrats on official retirement!
So, I woke up with a sore throat yesterday. Thought it was just a Herceptin side effect, but I must've caught some kind of cold despite trying to stay free from germs. Managed to do some much needed house-cleaning just before getting sick, but it's back to bed for me.
Loving the pics and energy of this thread nonetheless.
-
Congratulations Octogirl. I love being retired.
H and I are going to SS Monday to sign him up. He will be 62 in September. We both decided to take Social Security early. I worked for 34 years and he for 35 . We could have waited, but why. We both saved while we were working, we have no debt. The men in his family have not-great hearts - he has a slight murmur. His grandfather & father died before 65, an uncle died at 39 and his younger brother just passed 3 years ago at 55. He figures he wants to collect while he can. I was going to wait, but the cancer changed my mind. Nothing is guaranteed, so we are going to enjoy our remaining years.
(20+)
I didn't know my insurance might help pay for a fitness center. I will check into it. If it doesn't, I may still look at Planet Fitness. I know there is one near me. I am not into group activities right now, but would like to explore treadmills, ellipticals and even weights.
I walked this morning and got through the 35 minute walk+stretches. It was humid, but I brought a large bottle of water, a cooling wrap for my neck and a towel to wipe my face, so I was good. I didn't get the elevated heart rate I wanted, but I walked and that's all that matters right now. H will gladly go to Lowe's with me. He,too, could go every day. He used to go with an uncle because they had to "check out what was new". They walked the whole store!
-
Dh and I hiked about 2.5 miles today at a local park along the river. Very humid and river was swollen and muddy from all the rain we've been getting, however, I did manage to photograph a turtle convention.
Scottie
-
Neat picture, some friends for Nats turtle!
Hope you feel better, burner.
Octo, I always clean before I go on a trip. I hate to come home to a mess.
I went to Early Bird Yoga this morning & managed a walk between shopping, yard work and cleaning the house. My brother & SIL are coming tomorrow for the holiday & we always host a picnic on the 4th of July in our shady back yard for some friends (which is growing by the minute, one of our friends just texted me to ask if his (adult) daughter could bring her boyfriend & his son (which, of course, she can but I think I better make another grocery run!).
I am the person in my family who could spent all day walking around Menards!!!!
-
Scottie, it's early in the AM here and I am on my phone reading everyone's posts. When I got to yours I laughed aloud at the "convention". My DH stirred a bit but didn't wake!
Octo, congratulations on your retirement. It's wonderful that you're heading to Monterey. I went to grad school at UCSB so we used to travel up there often enough. Enjoy!
Badger- thanks for the golden bday tip! He is so in his glory/ bday party Friday, then three cousins doting on him all day Saturday.
We too have lots of visitors, Ruth. But I am sneaking away for a hike w a good friend this morning. I really need to move this body. The AI plus humidity has put an ache in my bones and joints. Moving helps.
Teese- thinking about you.
Enjoy your holiday weekend! Well, Lilac, you'll have to do your July 4 celebrating by proxy.
Ladies, you continue to inspire and encourage me with your lives. Thanks!
-
Falconer, when I first started Arimidex; a good friend, who was 6 months ahead of me, said, "Keep moving, keep moving, keep moving." So I did, and it really did help.
I did 15 minutes of abs, and a few more house straightening things. Company arrives after lunch. It is a nice day so I hope someone will be willing to walk with me later!
