Claire, thank you for that advice. I have most of the gear I think - good idea to wear a cashmere "jumper" (as we say here in the UK). Hah, we do have a pretty large bathtub
Love L'Occitane and use the shea butter hand cream always. Intervals are easier for me than a long run or running at a race pace which I find incredibly difficult at the moment. I do trail running also because I enjoy it so much. When I lived in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania areas back in the 1980's and 1990's I used to run on the Appalachian trail - really miss that. Glad you are safe from the storm.
Lisa, please do send me your recipe for potato chip cookies. I have Dutch grandparents on my Dad's side. They settled in near Grand Rapids Michigan in about 1935 I think.
Ladies thanks for the encouragement. And thank you for the scenic pictures - I miss all those beautiful fall colours on the trees!
Happy exercising and moving forward!
-
hi all and happy page 1,000 of this wonderful thread!
Really nice day yesterday, got in a 30-min walk. Made chicken dinner then simmered the bones all night for stock. House smells divine this morning. Lisa, would you please post your recipe for potato chip cookies?
Busy three days coming up at work, then Thurs off to pack etc then fly to San Antonio Friday! woo hoo!!
-
Whew! I've gotten behind in posting - something to do with watching baseball games. Very disappointing that my Nats lost, but they gave it a good fight. We had some crucial injuries just before the playoffs, so that pretty much doomed us. So of course, my battle cry is now "Wait till next year!!"
I've been keeping up with running, and have a 5K race coming up this weekend. And it's great to see all the other slow runners here! Ginger, I love the word "wogging", but to try to retain a shred of dignity I think I'll call it "wunning".
Ginger - I'm so sorry about the loss of your friend. Seven recurrences - there's something terribly unfair about that. Lifelover - I need to do intervals too. I've done a couple of training programs with the local running club where they make you run intervals, and my speed always improves a bit, but then of course once the program is done I slack off and I lose it. And a sub-40 5K works for me! Badger - the show sounds wonderful! Claire - glad the storm went bust!
Love everyone's fall pix! We were visiting friends in Western Maryland this weekend where it's much colder and more mountainous, and the colors there are near peak. They're not quite there yet at the cabin or home, but they're starting.
Everyone - enjoy San Antonio! I was hoping to join you if my Nats didn't make it to the World Series, but now I'm not going to make it for a different reason. After a lot of running numbers, doing calculations, and a lot of thought, I've decided to put in my papers to retire on December 31. Sooooo, as you can imagine wrapping up a 20+ year job in about 10 weeks is going to be crazy. But after that I'll be retired and have all the time in the world for next year's trip!
-
Nats, so sorry about the Nationals. I watched the game and they had their chances.
Congratulations on your upcoming retirement. That is definitely an excused absence! I LOVE the flexibility of retirement most of all. Will DH keep working? Will you stay where you are? Tell all!
One of my naughty 17 year old cats is showing his age and has been doctoring. I basically sat up with him all night and I spent time talking with the vet today. We will try a new plan that will hopefully give him some quality time for awhile. The very, very sad part of having pets. I did POUND this morning & will go back tonight for Zumba and yoga.
-
Just have to have a word and some pics in on page 1,000. Have a great time in San Antonio guys!
DH leading the way and the gravel trail from Tremalzo Pass (ca. 2000 m. vertical drop) in Trentino.

Walked today on our property for 45 minutes - hurrah! I had to stop and rest when going uphill but am happy to be moving so much. Also, my spirit is greatly improved by spending a weekend with breast cancer patients at a retreat. Lots of laughing and crying and being inspired by others.
I got test results and nothing explains why I am experiencing shortness of breath. Tomorrow I have to refill my prescription for anastrozole, so I am going to ask for a different manufacturer's pills. Maybe that will solve my problem.
Unfortunately, the scan I had showed two tiny odd spots on my vertebrae. So, another scan (pet?) a week from tomorrow. Oh. Nice. (She said sarcastically.)
Smiles to all . . .
-
Heidi, your pictures didn't come through (on my computer anyway).
Blinkie, beautiful picture! Definitely try a different manufacturer. Sometimes people have trouble with the fillers in one and are fine on another. Blah on the pet scan! Hoepfully it will show NOTHING!
-
Week 5 day 1 of c25k - 47 minutes total on treadmillwith 21 of that actually 'wunning/wogging'😊
BlInkie - hoping the curious spots turn out to be nothing - hate it when there are worrisome test results that we must then have further tests to wait and worry about results!
Potato chip cookies:
1 cup shortening
1 cup white sugar
1 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp soda
1 tsp salt
2 cups crushed chips
2 1/2 cups flour
Cream sugars and shortening.
Add eggs, soda, salt and beat until smooth.
Stir in potato chips (I put them through a food processor but you can just as easily beat them up in a ziploc bag also)
Stir in flour (original recipe calls for 2 cups but the cookies turn out way flat. The additional flour makes them a bit more substantial and less fall-aparty)
Drop by spoonfuls on greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 for about 10 minutes (smaller cookies) and up to 12-13 minutes for larger cookies. If they start browning take 'em out quick!
Cool for a few minutes, pour a glass of milk and enjoy!
Then bring the remainder to the office to buy your co-workers' love😁

Here's some of my Zumba ladies and me.
-
Sorry you won't be joining us this year but what a great reason, sorry about your Nats but you know our household was rejoicing - Hannah and her fiancé are huge Dodger fans. Heidi your pictures didn't come through on my iPad either. Ruth sorry about your baby, hoping he gets some good quality. Blinkie my friend lives on acreage in the mountains of Tennessee and her woods look like that, just beautiful.
Tonight walked the beach and the pier,we had a little rain this morning so it was lovely and fresh and here is the sun as it sets in the west.....
-
Cheryl - I'm actually rooting for the Dodgers (hope I'm not a jinx) - we made a deal with my Dodger-loving inlaws - if the Nats won they'd root for the Nats, and if the Dodgers won we'd root for the Dodgers. So go Dodger Blue! Heidi - your pix came through on my PC and are beautiful!!! Retirement is definitely going to include travel for me. DH can't retire for a few more years, so I hope to pick up some part time work until he's free. I'm also looking forward to that flexibility thing Ruth talked about. Ruth - hope you can make your kitty comfortable for a bit longer. It's the toughest part of sharing your life with a furkid. Blinkie - good luck with the scan. As Sweet says, worry is part of this hand we've been dealt. Sweet - yum! Ruth - you guys look adorable!
It's hot and sticky here again so I'll be doing a dreadmill run after work instead of "wunning" outside. It's supposed to return to cooler normal temps later this week and should be OK for my 5K race this Saturday. This is the same race I did last year to benefit the local draft horse rescue - they rescue draft horses from the slaughter auctions and rehab them on their farm, then adopt them out. They currently house 90 rescued horses so it's a large operation. The race takes place on the horse farm, and you get to run along the paddocks where the horses are. I think I identify with the draft horses - I'd like to think I run like an elegant sleek thoroughbred, but in reality I run much more like a draft horse!
-
DH worked a year longer than me. Which was very good because I had time to my life kind of structured the way I liked it. Hope it cools off before your race, Nats.
Did a combination of Zumba/Step/Abs this morning, am off to sub this afternoon & will do yoga tonight.
My poor cat is going to have an x-ray tomorrow afternoon. Along with bad arthritis in his hind legs, I am afraid he might have an obstruction. Since he is 17 years old, I am trying to prepare myself for the worse. I will now quit typing about or I will cry.....
-
Ruth, so sorry to hear that, but hoping for the best!
and on a lighter note, sorry about the Nats, Nats. I feel your pain, as a Giants fan. But as a die-hard Giants fan, now my motto is ABD (Anybody But the Dodgers) so for now I am a Cubs fan...
Walked a mile and a half this am, though it was still dark...more this afternoon!

Wow, I haven't been on here for several weeks! Still in Hawaii with my adorable grandchildren, although must admit......exhausted! We have done so much and am having a wonderful time!
All of you Texas bound ladies have a great time!
-
OMG that is the cutest picture, mysnshine Four little angels.
Ruth, sending hugs for you. Our pets are very special and its hard to face losing them.
Blinkie I hope your next scan shows something not alarming. i will tell you Ive had two false scares in the last three years so try not to worry yet
Congrats on your retirement Natsfan.
i started off a Dodger fan because we lived in LA and it was the first baseball game I ever saw. Then we moved to Chicago so now i ama long time Cub fan. Go Cubs!
i had the day off yesterday so i went for a 70 minute walk and then went for a 25 minute bike ride in the afternoon. The warm weather kept enticing me outside . Today I went for a 32 minute walk .
-
Darling pictures, mysunshine!
-
Ruth: Thinking about you and your sweet kitty tomorrow. (((HUGS to you both)))
Cheryl: Beautiful sunset!
Nats: Congratulations on your upcoming retirement! How exciting!!!
Blinkie: I want to come to your place and walk with you. Lovely!
Heidi: I didn't get your pictures either. Please try to repost them.
Sweet: Thanks for the recipe!
mysunshine: You make a sexy hula girl! Your grandchildren are precious!
It's hot again here also but expecting a cool down soon. Walked/ran the afternoon.
-
Ok-wonderland's post summed up all my comments I was about to write so "ditto".
Nats- I love the term wunning...adding it to my vocabulary. Congrats on your retirement.
Ruth- sending you and your fur baby a hug.
Wow on 1000 pages
Thanks for the kind words. We toasted my friend at our support group tonight. She wil be missed.
-
Mary your Saturday run sounds like it's going to be fun. Ruth sending you and your kitty a big (((HUG))). A lovely tribute Ginger. Mysunshine your grands are gorgeous
Tonight did Body Flow and then did a filming of Sprint, I was a sweaty Betty when I left that gym tonight.
-
I did speed work for 30 minutes yesterday. Laid back running guru and Lisa Jackson has this tip for runners looking to increase their speed:
Q: Tip for a runner who wants to run faster or a longer distance?
Wannabe hares should know that speed training really does pay off. It feels awful at the time, but the rewards are worth it. I like doing Tiger Training, where I warm up for five minutes by jogging, and then run like a tiger is just about to sink its fangs in my fanny for 30 seconds, followed by a 90 second recovery. I do that eight times and then have a five minute jog to cool down. Imagining the tiger panting behind me really does make me run faster.I love this idea
Happy exercising!
-
Ruth - good luck today with your kitty. Mysunshine - cute pix - what a cute group you have and love the sexy hula girl shot! Ginger - what a lovely farewell to your friend. Life - with all this talk about interval training, I decided I needed to get back into it. So I downloaded an interval training program for my phone (5K Pacer by Fitness22) and did the first one last night on the dreadmill. This app is by the same group that does a Couch to 5K app I used a few years ago, and I was pleased with that. I also had downloaded Zombie Running interval training app a few years ago - that one was scary good!
-
Happy cat news! Perhaps TMI; but when they did the x-ray, they found that he was so constipated that he was plugged all the way up his intestines (which has also plugged up his bladder). So they are knocking him out, giving him an enema, draining the bladder & will send him home with some different food & a long-term laxative. The vet says that he actually looks good for 17 & should have a couple quality cat-lives left. I am SOOOOO relieved, like dodging a bullet!
-
Here's where we walked today.
-
Ruth - never thought I'd say this, but hooray for constipation!!!
-
Yes, this time it's a good thing to be able to report that someone is full of crap!
-
Great pix everyone! Thanks for the recipe, Lisa.
Yay for good cat news, Ruth!
Congrats on freeing up your future, Mary. Bummer about the Nats.
Worked my tail feathers off these last three days but now DONE with work until 31 Oct. :-)
Errands, laundry & packing tomorrow then WOO HOO seeing my Sculpted Sisters on Friday!
-
To San Antonio bound ladies, please pack some warm weather clothing. We still have these two days in 90s, Friday may dip to 70s, then will back up to 80s.
-
Hey NatsFan - I use apps in my training as well - I found them really motivating. I found one that used humour and that was my favourite - nothing like laughter to get me moving
Ruth - I'm so pleased to hear about Oreo.
-
Thanks for the 'heads up' clinq. Yay for being 'plugged up' Ruth although I think I'd stand back once that laxative hits
My friend left yesterday but stayed local as the business meeting she had come to town for was nearby then through the night she fell in her hotel room and couldn't get up she wanted to stay in the hotel tonight but I insisted she come back to my place, she went to the doctor and has a kidney infection even though it wasn't a good reason it was nice to have her stay with me again.
Tonight I went to U Jam, probably will give the gym a miss tomorrow night as I need to do laundry and pack .... looking forward to seeing my sculpted sisters in San Antonio on Friday, woohooooooooI also have a full day at work and have to bath the dog and go get a pedicure .... I'm so looking forward to this get together -
