Buon giorno!
Saturday night we were invited to our friend's house. We each contributed to the meal. DH made the sauce for the fettucini that Marzie made by hand earlier in the day. The sauce was his ususal red with porcini mushrooms and sausage that he an Massimo shopped for earlier that day. We also brought filletto (fillet mignon) with red wine. Massimo tossed the salad and set a plate of Sargegnian cheese that he and DH added to their shopping cart. To finish, we had a selection of mousse from the Grand Cafe in Bracciano.
How Marzie made the fettuccini? Two hand cup of flour for one person serving. One egg for each person serving. Mix and dry. "The problem is", she shared, "that the humidity interferred, the rain today you know, that made it difficult to dry the fettuccini". So I learned that when it rains, they can't dry the fettuccini properly because it absorbs the moisture and changes the flavor. We enjoyed it anyway.
It was a a really special evening. We ate entirely too much food while we all stopped chasing after life to simply be together and chat.
DH took this pic. He loves playing with photography. I thought you might enjoy it.

Buon appetito,
M

Speaking of seasonal.. my friend brought me a huge sack of swiss chard which i washed, de-stemmed and froze.. now what to have? Polenta casserole with ham and cheese which i usually make with spinach or a quiche?... or something totally different?
She also brought me tons of grean beans which I've already frozen and tomatoes which i made into a sauce for stuffed green peppers.

Buon giorno,
Friends came to visit from Colorado. We went to Ostia Antica http://www.ostia-antica.org on Saturday to walk among the ruins, wonder about the people who lived there and what their lives must have been like. Then we met up again with our DHs at the mushroom festival in town. Yesterday DH cooked porcini in red sauce for fettucini. We shared that on the terrace because the weather is just incredibile for this time of the year.
A few pics to share of the ruins and the mushroom festival, but...it's not working...I don't know why. It seems that the sharing between software isn't as friendly as it used to be. If anyone knows what is going on between the software here on bc.org and photobucket, please let me know. I transfer from iphoto to photobucket then to bc.org. arrggh. Technology is great until it doesn't work! Sorry. The pics were fun.
Best wishes to all as always,
Marilyn

Marilyn: are you from California? for some reason I thought you were from Philadelphia area. If I lived in California I'd support Prop 37 too.
Trying to figure out what to get ready for Hurricane Sandy. My family is from Florida so I know how to orgnize things but I am trying to think of what I need to do--right now we are in the eye though we are inland so we may get wind and flooding (we are across the street from a river) but not a real hurricane. If it is still hitting in two days, I will move everything in from my yard...all of the potted plants, lawn furniture etc and I am already freezing blocks of ice in case we lose power (so the refrigerator can function like an ice box). I have a few gallons of water already, food, batteries etc. Mostly I worry about a wet basement and a leaky roof plus maybe the electric going off.
Will let you know how things go.
Have a nice weekend everyone.

Batten down the hatches East coast! Take care this weekend.
Mandy, I was raised in Delaware County and worked in Philadelphia over 25 years. I lived across the US. My sons are living in CA and my US address is there with them. So I am registered to vote in CA.
We are expecting storms here too this weekend. The clouds are already heavy and dark. I'll not need to water the garden today.
Dinner tonight with friends at their house. They are making the polenta and red sauce, we are bringing the sausage and wine.
Best wishes to all as always,
Marilyn

Teka: One of our yard drains broke during Irene and hubby and I were bailing out a basement window desperately because we had water 5 inches high in the window well. We had a little roof leaking so I raced around the house placing trash cans. But we had no major damage. We were lucky though--the river rose quite high--I'd never seen it that high before. But while people a mile away had major flooding, our block was lucky. Perhaps I am wrong, but I feel that they are creating a panic mode here and they should calm down. I expect that we could be without power for a day or two and hopefully the river will not go above its banks. The last time it did here was in the 1950s. Still we are in a technical flood zone so getting ready is best.
On the other hand I had great news yesterday--a clean mammo! It is 4 1/2 years post diagnosis so I am doing the happy dance.

Teka: We are fine! Not fully dry but power is on; river does not appear to be close to flood stage. Made a "comfort food" dinner last night--home made mac and cheese; salad with roasted beets; steamed string beans and chocolate chip cookies for dessert. Not a health food meal but a delicious one and we were all in a good mood afterwards. All is well. Thank you for asking! Have a nice day. Mandy

Buon giorno!
This will be the third time that I tried to post. I'm not surprised that I had difficulty in these days however.
I'm glad for those of who survived well, saddened for those who didn't. I spent the day on the phone yesterday checking on family and friends there. A neighbor's tree fell behind my mother's house taking out the power lines and landing in another neighbor's yard. My mother's house is still without power ... they moved her elsewhere (94 y.o. w/ alzheimer) My sister and brother remained to manage things. From the reports I'm seeing, the worst was revealed today. Stunning the amount of damage and the breadth of the storm.
I'm waiting again for the East coast to start their day before I call.
My heart is with all.
Best wishes to all as always,
Marilyn

Buon giorno,
Teka... We had much rain over the last couple of days...especially last night. I spent the afternoon making chocolate chip and almond cookies for Holloween, but no one ventured out to take them. Your cookies probably rated higher than mine on the health scale. The winds blew out my lantern candle at the front door. Yesterday, we ate veggie soup that DH made the day before. It was so warming. Today I see sun and blue skies. I hope my laundry dries! I air dry on racks before I use the dryer to save money on utilities. The garden needs some clean up too. Time to get moving on the day.
I spoke with my mother at my sister's house yesterday. She was a bit confused and wanting to go home, but in good spirits as my sister cared her. The house and entire block is still without electricity. They are working to bring back electricity at the volunteer fire house first, then they'll get to the houses. Good neighbors helping each other though. Wish I was there too.
Best wishes to all as always,
Marilyn

Marilyn: I hope that power is soon returned so that your mother can go backto her home.
We were lucky and really were spared any direct impact to our neighborhood. Though my daughter, who goes to school in NYC, and was at a meeting in North Carolina, flew in to us yesterday, when our airport opened, and is waiting for buses or trains to resume their schedules so that she can return to NY. We are thinking that she will go tomorrow by bus.
Teka, can you share your recipe for pecan oatmeal cookies?
Have a nice day.

otherwise...No kids came...none, nada zippo. But then again we had steady, heavy rain. Looks like we'll need to eat the cookies!
