Teka will be awhile before we get frost.  I like the fact that in the south we can have a spring a fall tomato crop

    Hi all,

I miss Marybe. It is hard to come here and not find her incredible smile in every recipe she posted. Her butt cookies are hall of fame material. The smiles and outright laughter they elicit are a treasure. I just donated to BC.org in her memory. I'll always be grateful for these discussion boards and for our opportunity to connect with so many great women.

DH and I have been busy over the last year fighting another front...familial amyloidosis. Seems my breast cancer issues were basic training for DH's event. Getting old is not for sissies. I'm sorry not to have posted more. The garden struggled through the heat as did we. A string of complications, side effects, clinical trial moments, for a rare disease that few people, including doctors, heard of. Even in these times, he'd manage to bring the conversation around to food.

This month has been gorgeous...fresh air, green grass again. The strawberries didn't wake up until the end of August and then they were sweet and abundant. The tomatoes were tasty but few. "To everything, there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven."

Just wanted to say hi. We're having fast food tonight...prosciutto, mellon, mozzarella.

    Buon apettito...hugs to you all.

I miss Marybe as well.  I made a new dish tonight and thought of her.  I basically was an apple and an onion sauteed in butter.  the sauce was chicken broth, heavy cream, 2 tablespoons of whole grain mustard and white wine reduced down until thick.  While the sauce is reducing you put everything together  and add boneless skinless chicken breast and as the sauce thickens the chicken will cook.  Add salt, pepper and dill weed to taste.  A wonderful marry of flavors.

Sherryc, mouth watering...and it's only 8:10 in the morning here!

Teka, Yep, Yep and Yep. :-)

We were almost States side. Months of organization. Then this week, the doctors put DH on a medication that was developed in US, clinical studies in both Europe and US, but only approved in Europe...very sad for our friends in US. The good news is that we are here and he can get it. It's only one of two medicinal therapies, short of organ transplants for his disease. The FDA is keeping us on the outside looking in...at least for now.

However, the docs we see for this rare bird are fantastic and...share recipes as well as restaurant ratings. They keep it interesting. His neurologist sent us home with a tin of tomatoes called Il Miracolo di San Gennaro that he swears to be the best for his sauce. Also with a bag of rice...Il Riso Della Cicogna...grown, packaged and hand labeled in Pavia. I shared my recipe book with the Doc. He wants to add his. I'll need to start another book. Keeps me going. He and his wife (expecting their first baby in Oct) offered their home to me last Dec. when DH met with an emergency just as we were leaving to return for Rome. The hospital for these specialists are a seven-hour drive away. We're driven to the station in Rome then take the high speed train from to Milan then picked up by a driver from the hotel that supports patients arriving for hospital visits and driven to Pavia.  We eat on the train...the food is good!

    Abbracci tutti, (Hugs all)

Apple, you are music to my ears. Big hug to you too.

Here's a little catch up from July until now.

    July... our fast food.

August ... friends come to help celebrate DH's birthday

     Photobucket

Here's the spread. Neighbors brought the desserts...Mellon scooped then sprinkled with chocolate slivers and topped with mint leaves. Under the foil is a pound cake of sorts cooked with swirls of dark chocolate. Then there is the London Broil with sauteed peppers, and mushrooms cooked with onions as side dish.

DH is the boss of pasta! This was first plate to the rest of the meal.

September ... SOUP! It's officially Fall! This is homemade vegatable soup. I'm so glad that DH loves to cook. He gave some to our pregnant neighbor too.

This is a very special birthday gift to my husband from one of our neighbors. It's water and stones from Lake Bracciano. They knew of our plans to move to US so they bottled and sealed our lake to have always. This is a treasure...as much their hearts as the gift itself.

    Photobucket" This will keep.

Best wishes to all as always,

    Marilyn

Teka, The deer have excellent taste! Beautiful setting too...I love the colors and I miss the Northeast.

I just found that photobucket is not supported by my iphoto since the last upgrade...arghhh. I'm on a hunt through the system of security for app downloads....arghhh + arghhh squared.

    ciao for now...

I hope you'll be moving to Kansas City, Marilyn.  It's a nice artistic town.. not very cosmopolitan tho.

Apple, I was in Kansas City in the 70's on one of our cross country jaunts by car (4x)! Flat country where you can see the highway go on forever as I recall. Now we are looking in Rouge Valley Oregon. It may be a year before we are there. I've always wanted to live in that area of the country. My sons live in CA so not too far away. The rest of the family lives on the East coast. My guess is that if I get there as planned, we could make plans for a get together one way or the other. Kansas City for sure is on the way to or from family on either coast. Smile

I still haven't fixed the picture posting problem. I had an MRI appointment this morning for a back problem. Then we stopped at our favorite Bar for pasta. We always stop there on the way home after medical visits of any kind. "Where everybody knows your name..."

Best wishes to all as always,

I can post pics again. This is the test pic. I wrote to Apple (not our Apple), to tell them the problem. I went a circuitous route to do it. But they responded today with a "fix" for my software. I'm impressed.

This is Stella. One of the best dogs in the world! I tell her that everyday. I tell that to our other dog Napo too. She was licking her chops...probably begging almonds from me. She always knows when I'm eating almonds.

OK then, more recipes later. I'm relieved to know the photo feature works.

Cute dog Marilyn!  And she eats almonds...a real stella!

Teka it sounds like you are having a lovely trip.  I also would like to spend a few winter months in Florida!

I am off to Richmond, Virginia for an overnight trip tomorrow.  A dear friend is ill and I am just stopping by to see her.

    Hi there!

Just got back from Richmond but it is too far South for any fall folliage this early.

My friend was just diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. She is being treated at a major cancer center so I can only pray for her and hope for the best.   I was able to stay an extra day and night so I just got back today.   It was good to see her and I am happy I was able to get to Virginia.

She is a great cook, so  we had a Southern breakfast with biscuits, eggs, and salmon patties.  And a lovely time together just chatting up a storm.

    Buon giorno,

Mandy1313, I echo Teka's sentiments. Southern breakfast brings back memories especially bisquits and gravey...yours was that much more delightful made by your friend in her kitchen...doesn't get better than that.

    Teka, any foliage pics?

I took a few shots this week. The orange trees are producing and should be ready by December. The problem is that the blood red is blooming with blossoms! It's October! No bees...they packed for the season! Basil too is blooming again...so is the lettuce. Incredible!

    These are magnolia blossoms!

When we lived in Washington, DC, we'd do an early November trip to Virginia to see the fall folliage--so what I saw for Richmond was par for the course. There were one or two trees starting to change color but most were green.  My SIL lives in Boston and they have some chilly weather already; yesterday we had a real fall day here too.

Marilyn, your photos are beautiful and interesting.

Teka, where in Tennessee are you visiting?  My hubby has cousins, uncles, aunts, etc all over the state.  During the summer I drove from New Orleans to Memphis to Nashville with my daughters and saw hubby's uncle plus whatever was en route (Graceland; the Civil Rights Museum; Beale Street; a plantation etc.)

Well the Komen three day walk has my street on its route so I am off to do some grocery shopping before they close the block  for the walk.

    Have a wonderful day.

    Hugzz

    Mandy
