    Teka, thanks... all is well.

We felt nothing. Family in Revenna were woken from their sleep...East of Bologna. Our thoughts are with those who suffered.

    Grazie,

Oh, Marilyn, your salad and the dinner looked wonderful.....I love veal....always order in when I go to Italian restaurants if it is on the menu.

I have my sauerbraten marinating at my Dad's and then started thinking I would not have enough so started another roast this AM and will haul it to my Dad's with me tomorrow afternoon, also with the birthday cake and springerlies that I am baking in the AM....also will take the frozen pulled pork.

I was worried about being tired and having to do all this so when I got my treatment today, asked for more decadron and they upped my dose after asking the onco if it was OK.    Normally I hate not being able to sleep, but think I need the extra energy and welcome not being sleepy.

Now I must go wash some of my big glass bowls that I will be using for the salads.   I will take some pics at the party.   I really have no idea how many will be there, but am thinking around 50.  This is an open house like the Xmas party.

Have a good weekend, ladies.    Loved the poem, Teka.  I start a diet every morning and it usually only lasts until lunchtime. It is something I would like to do, but it's not exactly on my bucket list so I am not going to beat myself up over it. If I decide to go to my class reunion, that will probably be the motivating incentive I need to get going.

    Buon giorno,

A friend posted this on FB. The picture is Parmasean cheese racks destroyed in the earthquake. The region is also known for it's wine.

just some interesting food stuff I've been trying lately.. all about it.. Korean rice sticks?

I love  to visit my Korean friends' store.  They have all sorts of dried veggies (dried sweet potatoe stems.  dried snake eye grass (i kid you not, dried fish skin, dried carrot leaves, dried beet greens).  They know i have cancer and the grandmother always encourages me to try these foods. dried seaweed shreds, dried oak leaves...  I am still alive probably because of her.  They don't want me to pay for them either... they ordered them for me, they said and other people will provide the profit so i have to gracefully accept them which i am happy to do.. i take them home and try them.

I do buy plenty of produce there.. every sort of mushroom (except morels) that one could want, as well as sauces, teas and this wonderful food which is a tube of rice product...

they cook the rice, mash it, let it dry a bit and then extrude it thru a machine in hose like shapes.  you slice the tubes very thin and stir fry with veggies.  They absorb all the burntish crisp sauce and make ABSOLUTELY the most delicious dishes.  They gave me a sample and it took me a little experimentation. - a great way to go gluten free.  they are seriously chewy and very unusual i would think to the western palate.  They are almost indescribably good.. super chewy.. is an unusual way and flavors change as they are absorbed.  Seriously good with snow peas.

here is a nice picture of them...http://www.seriouseats.com/2010/11/seriously-asian-korean-rice-cakes.html

After trying many recipes, i  simply like to slice them on the diagonal thinly and start wokking with garlic, olive oil, sesame oil and throw these in.  they readily absorb flavor.. i add a bit of hoisin sauce or anything like that.. maybe anchovy paste, bean paste, and soy sauce.

i let them get kind of burnt around the edges.. and then sautee some oriental veggies in the same pan... peas, beans, broccoli, mushrooms, green onions.. whatever.   tossed them together or not.  that chewy texture is so intriguing.

Apple you had my mouth watering it all sounded so good. And I agree that there is so much to learn from asian culture about eating healthy. You are fortunate to have these caring ladies as your friends.

I learned about black beans to help my cholesterol years ago at a farmer's market. They were Chinese. And when I was going through menopause, I found a woman who did acupuncture and provided chinese herbs. She was recommended by oncologist at a prestigious university. This woman was also a doctor there. That was over 15 years ago and the medical community still had thier pants in bunch over complimentary therapies unlike today.

It'll be great to see more of their recipes here!

And if anyone has a recipe for the euro crisis, please forward that to the European Bank and the Parliament. The clock is ticking and taking all our attention and energy.

    Buon appetito!

it's raspberry jam time.  I picked my first batch.. Tomorrow I'll be picking 4 berries at a time rather than one.  They are perfect this year.

I only got 4 cups of berries.   I mash and then boil the berries, add an equal amount of sugar - boil for 2 minutes then whip them with a rotary blender for 4 minutes.. the seeds are suspended. We go thru it so quickly there is no need to sterilize jars or all that.

Son #2 can eat a whole jar in no time flat. that is why he is so delightfully husky. Man does he have an appetite. He makes a foot long sandwich all the time.. and it's usually 18 inches long. He has been doing the discus thing and has actually lost about 20 pounds. .. he just slims down in the middle. His shoulders and thighs are so massive - I hope he is good for some sport.. .. if he wasn't so darn lo-energy. He is the one who spent 6 weeks in the burn unit as a babe, and that had to havehad an effect on him. He could sit on the sofa and read for 6 hours. He also has horribly had allergies and even warm water burns his hands. (he washes the dishes in cold water.... aaaarrrrggg)

I have this beautiful crystal bowl (about an 8-cup bowl and that is his cereal bowl. I buy healthy cereals and he takes his own money and goes and buys cocoa krispies. I cringe everytime I see it in the sink.. It's worth about 50 bucks).

Anyway, he is gone this morning, so I'll get to at least taste this jam.. have some on toast with butter. I wish i could make some home made bread. - too many things to do.

had a great time at my son's and their party was so much fun.  Of course I never took pictures.  I am always having such fun I forget.  Anyway DH made 2 briskets and we took them with us and then DH and DS cooked chicken and a couple of different sausages.  Someone brought dried elk sausage that was yummy.  Also another person brought cajun gumbo and did a crawfish boil.  Then of course all the sides and deserts.  The most amazing desert was a cobbler that we all thought was an apple cobbler and come to find out it was made with zuchini squash.  I will have to get that recipe.

    Buon giorno all,

Holy Cow it's June 6 already!

Did I miss the zucchini cobbler recipe? Waiting for it too.

Sunday was three weeks since I sat with my friends for cappuccino and cornette. It was good to see them. I'm trying to arrange a luncheon before the 23rd when two of them are off for vacation. That means clean up in the garden and the terrace. I filled two huge garden bags of clippings...vines and hedge. I need to make a trip to the recycle center. My compose bin is going slower than I expected. I haven't see many worm either. I could use some of Sherry's.

I worked all day on the garden yesterday. Poor garden was unattended for at least as long as my friends other than superficially. Based on the pains in my back, that may be a recurrent theme. I bought more romaine lettuce to plant. I'm leaving the first one to go to seed. The tomatoes are coming along well. I need to get serious about putting some in jars this year.

We made one attempt for a lunch on the terrace with friends, and a rain storm chased us back in. The thunder sounded like a cannon! The weather is cooler and wetter than usual. It reminds me how Spring was years ago in the North East USA.

The earthquakes keep coming, both geological and metaphorical. Keeps us on our toes more than we like. But as we have no control over the matter, we best learn how to dance on our toes.

Best wishes to all as always,

    Marilyn
