You might think this is a futile idea as a tribute to Deb, but her passing has just taken me beyond the limit with this disease...here's what I propose.....
We pick one day, and everyone on this board emails Pres.Obama demanding a cure, no more studies on chemo, stats, etc...a cure once and for all.......if nothing else, the publicity from getting so many emails in one day will bring our fight to the forefront........Obama is a new President, he can be molded......it's worth a shot.......He talks so much about what a great country we are, what we can do if we all get together, what change he wants, let's see if he's all talk.......
What do you all think?
Deb
-
Nico, I sent you a pm about adding my name to the tribute. I am sitting here at work with tears in my eyes that someone would want to help others pay tribute to someone we have never met but feel so close to. My pay-it-forward entails volunteering at the loca wig bank for cancer patients and making some hats for them to wear. I know it isn't much but to help others who are going through the chemo means a lot to me.

I know there is a time difference from CT and just called hoping to get an answering machine with shop hours. No such luck. I will keep calling every hour until I reach someone and post that they are open.
Deb paid it forward in such a beautifully personal way. I may never have met Deb in person but she touched my life and that of my family with her encouraging words and humor. It is my hope that we all are finding ways to do the same thing whether it is in our local communities or here on the boards.
-
I hope you don't mind, but I emailed the local NBC Anchorage station (we are the closest one to Soldotna) and gave them a link to Deb's obit, told them about the flower orders and this group, and gave them the florist's phone number.
I thought it would be a wonderful interest story, the impact Deb made on everyone, the caring of others over the miles, as well as the possible shortage of roses in Alaska. You can bet the florist will have to order from Anchorage and 'outside' (what we call out of state). I will let you know if they pick it up and run a story.
-
Lories - I was thinking the same thing, but wasn't sure how to go about it.
For one woman living "way up there" in Alaska, Deb sure had a long reach, she has touched so many people, throughout the US and the world, mostly just through words on a page. It's amazing really, the impact she had on us all.
-
I can't wait to see the list of all the cities and states that the roses came from. Edited to add.....countries!!!!!
Through tears,
Traci
-
Great idea about the news. It would be great for the flower shop also as helpful as they are being to us.

lories what an awesome idea... When I spoke to Rachel and she asked where I lived, she was so moved by how people from all over were calling...I think this is truly amazing, and I just love each and every one of you to pieces. Donna- this idea was truly a blessing.
-
What a heartfelt tribute♥
I will call in a few hours, still too early.
-
No answer yet (noon EST) for the time zone challenged (like me!) Will try again in an hour.
-
CMB...I think that in Eastern time you are five hours ahead of them...so...2 o'clock should work. I wonder if they have a count of how many roses have been ordered so far...would be cool to know.
-
I too am time zone challenged - but I think it is 4 hours to east coast from here in darkest Alaska(yes I am still waiting for sunrise...)
Ladies synchronize your watches, it is almost 8:15 am here in Alaska. They likely open at 9??
or are coming into the shop early to find more pink roses?
-
Oh thanks Vickie! You're a peach! :-)
I'm also ordering one in memory of my friend's wife, who died of IBC 2 years ago. He worked in Alaska for a time, and I don't know, it's not like he's on the boards or anything, but he knows about you guys from me, and he gets it.
I hope they don't run out of roses, but at the same time, I kind of hope they do you know? A girl with a heart as big as Alaska deserves every rose in Alaska and beyond...
-
i'd like to send a rose also. can someone post the phone # again. thanks
-
Jerseymaria - for the phone #, go to the top of the page, it's listed there.
I'm calling in about an hour to give Rachel time to get in and get her coat off

-
Maria, the number is at the top of the post, but here it is again 907-260-5355.
Reading all of these posts just gives me goose bumps and inspires me to do something, not quite sure what yet, but will do something to pay it forward.
Thanks again ladies!
Julie - in Illinois (p.s. I've never called Alaska before until yesterday. You all have widened my horizons.)
-
thanks, i'll do that.
-
I just called from Florida and got through. I did have to hold for almost 5 minutes, but didn't mind. I think this is a beautiful gesture.
-
I just called as well. No waiting. Talked with Tammy. Said the phones are still ringing off the hook. You all are GREAT for starting this. What a tribute.
-
Goodness, I was able to hold it together, even while ordering a rose for our sweet ferne, until Tammy (the owner I assume) told me she want to school with Deb. I just started bawling, the poor woman!!
-
Tammy went to school with our Alaska Deb?? Now I've got chill bumps!!
For anyone who doesn't know that is jumping from the first post to the last....it's only $10.00 to send a rose for Deb!!
Hugs everybody,
Traci
-
Dumb question:
How will her family get all of these single rose/vases home after the service?
Forgive me if this has already been addressed somewhere.
I want to add a rose from KC, but don't want to add anymore stress/work to John, their girls, or her parents.
-
Kelly - an arrangement (or two) is going to be made from the single roses we are purchasing. There won't be a vase with each rose.
Doreen
-
Thank you, Doreen...that makes sense! {edit: I went back and actually read where this was discussed yesterday...I am late.}
I went to Tammy's myspace, she does do beautiful work.
I will be adding my rose to the arrangement.
Thank you to Donna for thinking of this!
-
Traci, a bad storm going on here today. Neither rain, nor snow, nor sleet, nor hail, kept me from sending your letter today.
I hear it's reaching all the way down to Texas!! Stay safe everyone. -
I think Deb would be pleased to know that she is uniting us in such a positive way despite our sadness. This is such a unique experience.
-
Hi there, Ladies
I just called. Although I never "knew" Deb, I had read some of her older posts when I got here, and was so impressed. I love this group, and I know Deb will be with us forever. I hope someone can get a photo of our roses, and post it here for us. Gentle hugs to all.
