Townhall.com Biden/Obama: Charity and Savings - Failing Grade
Hank Adler Friday, September 12, 2008
If it were not so important, we should be able to laugh at the tax returns and U.S. Senate disclosure forms of Senators Obama and Biden.
In 2004, obviously neither Senator Biden nor Senator Obama realized that their tax returns would be made available to the public. And neither of them "walked their talk".
In 2004, the Bidens reported that they had $234,271 in adjusted gross income and made contributions of $380. Biden spokesman David Wade said the deductions on the tax forms ``are not the sum of their annual contributions to charity.'' The Bidens ``contribute to their church, and they also contribute to their favorite causes.'' Sure, maybe he tossed a quarter into the Salvation Army kettle. No one forgets to list their charitable contributions in their annual tax return. In 2004, the Obamas reported $207,647 in adjusted gross income and contributed $2500 to charity, an inch over 1% of their income.
Obama's 2004 tax returns report no (none, zero, zip) interest or dividend income. This is confirmed in his 2004 U.S. Senate disclosures which report not a single family bank or checking account with a balance of $1000. One might conclude he and his wife took their pay checks down to the local gas station and cashed them every Friday afternoon. Pretty unusual for folks earning over $200,000 per year. Biden's 2004 tax returns reported the grand sum of $129 in interest income and not a dollar of dividend income. These are families that were earning over $200,000 per year for years and years and years. (The Obamas had adjusted gross income of over $240,000 and the Bidens had adjusted gross income of over $220,000 every year, 2001, 2002 and 2003.)
So what do we have in terms of these Presidential and Vice-Presidential nominees? First, we have people who are not believers in charitable giving while outside the public spotlight. Second, we have people who believe that people who earn over $250,000 a year are rich, but apparently cannot save so much as a nickel while making just under $250,000 a year. Finally, we have two men who wish to be the leaders of the largest economy in the world, who between them simply do not invest in that economy.

Anne, I noticed the beautiful children on your avatar but had my grandbabies running around this afternoon and was lucky if I could read anything but wonderful job, they are gorgeous!!!!
Joe the plumber, that turned into an ugly mess. In Ohio you have to have a license to practice in most of the state which he doesn't have. As far as buying the buisness it was just something mentioned in passing that this guy might want to sell his business but nothing was a deal in the works. I think he was a poor choice to pop out with an example because it is coming back to bite him in the butt. The toledo paper actually reported that they didn't even think this guy was a registered voter which makes his opinion not to helpful to either side.
IBCSpouse, as far as attacking with little knowledge.....I really think it is more a female instinct kind of thing. Most women know what I'm talking about you either like someone or you don't. Sometimes you can explain it and other times you just can't put your finger on it but there is something about the person that bugs you. I feel that way about Sarah Palin, can't put my finger on exactly what bugs me so bad but I really just don't like her.
I do believe she is being used by McCain. He is a very anti woman type of man, doesn't believe in equal pay for equal work and I know there is data to back that statement up but I sure don't know where it is right now. I think he wanted a big name for a VP and something to grandstand Obama. Considering everyone was speculating Obama would ask Hillary and when he didn't alot of people were disappointed. So why not find a woman and upstage Obama. Good plan as far as I'm concerned but I think it backfired. She is turning out not to be as likable as he would have hoped. The political analysts say the VP is the one to go out and do the attacking and keep the candidate clean but she went a bit overboard. When she would speak it seemed she knew what the handlers could teach her quickly and gave her key phrases to fall back on. She seemed to fall back on them too much and made herself look bad.
Maybe in a different environment I would think differently about her but I just don't. Like I said she was the deal breaker in picking McCain as the person I was voting for.
I do want to thank you ladies and gentleman for being polite to me and I am trying not to stir too much just get opinions and speak honestly.
-
Anne,
Yeah, that terrorist, G Gordon Liddy. How many cops did he kill? 9 fatherless kids all because of Ayers.
I love the babies picture. They're adorable.
-
There is a case here in Wisconsin - about a year ago a police officer went to a party where a former girlfriend was and ended up shooting and killing several people at the party including his ex-girlfriend. The parents of those killed are now sueing the police department and the town because they allowed this mentally unstable person to be a police officer. I cannot blame anyone in Alaska who would want that trooper fired. I think it is irresponsible that he was not fired.
As for the people shouting at rallies. I do believe that McCain said that it he would not tolerate that type of behavior. He may not have said anything to this lady today because I would imagine they now have people in the crowd to warn people that this type of behavior won't be tolerated and if they want to stay they have to be quiet. It would be very annoying to have to interrupt a speech every time someone shouted out something.
I am not as concerned about Obama's associations although I do believe as in his words he has done "a lot of boneheaded" things. I am more concerned about the number of bone headed things he has done. Also he can't take a stand on an issue - does anyone really know where he stands on any issue - I mean really? It seems to change depending on the audience.
Rosemary - it will just seem like we are in Russia, Cuba, or Venezuela. I already know several people who will work less if he is elected - there will be no incentive to work more.
-
I never suggested this guy didn't need to be fired but you have to realize we are only hearing her side of the story and there are always two sides to a story. Did he really taser the boy, if he did then he should have been charged with assault and that would have been the chief of polices job. Anyway, my point was if he deserved to be fired he should have been but if the governer has to step in to make sure everyone loses a job that has done something wrong, when does the governor have time to do their job. I guess that was more my point with that one.
I am a big believer in not hurting our children (wouldn't have had 4 of them if I didn't). But if things happened the way Sarah and Todd said they did why didn't the proper people do thier jobs? Why was it necessary for the gov to step in at a time that coincendentally right when her or his sister was in a bitter divorce with this guy?

This is for LuAnn:
Obama Pays Women Only 78 Percent of What He Pays Men
Thursday, September 18, 2008
By Fred Lucas, Staff Writer(CNSNews.com) - While Sen. Barack Obama's presidential campaign has produced a television ad criticizing Sen. John McCain's position on equal pay for women and pointing out that women in America are paid only 77 cents on the dollar compared to men, Obama pays his own female Senate staffers, on average, only 78 percent of what he pays male staffers.
Women on McCain's staff, meanwhile, earn 24 percent more on average than women on Obama's Senate staff. McCain also pays his female Senate staff members a higher average salary than his male Senate staff members.
Women occupy seven of the top 10 highest-paid positions on McCain's staff, and five of the top 10 highest-paid positions on Obama's staff.
The numbers come from the most recent Report of the Secretary of the Senate, which includes the salaries of every member of each U.S. senator's staff during the period of Oct. 1, 2007 through March 31, 2008.
This is the second consecutive six-month period reviewed by CNSNews.com in which McCain, an Arizona Republican, has paid women on his Senate staff a higher average salary than he pays men and Obama has paid men a higher average salary than he pays women.
The pay gap between men and women in McCain's office closed in the most recent six-month period compared to the previous period, but the pay gap widened slightly in Obama's office. The CNSNews.com analysis included all staff members for each Senator-except those listed as "interns"-that were included in the Report of the Secretary of the Senate.
Gender issues have played a role in the presidential race recently as McCain picked Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate, the first woman to be nominated for vice president by the Republican Party. This week, the National Organization for Women formally endorsed Obama for president.
In the period from October 1 through March 31, Obama paid women on his Senate staff an average annual salary of $44,953.21, which was $12,472 less than the $57,425.00 average annual salary he paid men. Women outnumbered men on the staff 30 to 27McCain is not against equal pay for equal work. There was a lawsuit brought by a woman who found out that she was being paid less than a man doing the same job. Apparently there is a statute of limitations on this and that had long expired. If she were allowed to sue then it would open up the flood gates to lawsuits from anyone for anything if the statute of limitations had expired - if you do it for one then you have to do it for all.
-
Yes LuAnn he really tasered the boy. He admitted that he did. He admitted that he made a lot of mistakes. Not sure why they would want to keep him in that type of job. I am more concerned that he legally has a weapon and seems to have poor judgement. Like this guy in Wisconsin - if they had only done something - several young people would still be alive today.
-
If you all are not watching CNN you need to put it on this is hilarious! The two candidates are at a charitable dinner for the catholic church and are doing kind of a roast and making fun of themselves and each other. It is really good!

Grace, I really want to be nice. But do you really think we're falling for those comments. A "fair shot." Grace, you were and are a huge supporter of Obama and have been since he began his campaign. If I remember correctly you were not for Hillary. I believe it was you and Amy who were mesmerized by Obama.
"Cool" IS part of Obama's personality. You say you were trying to put personalities aside. No you weren't. Obama didn't want to answer the questions that SOME people would like to know about his past. Of course he wants too stick to the "issues.

Grace, c'mon. I wasn't born yesterday. You know the issues from each candidate by now. If not, you haven't been doing your homework. What do you guys do over <-----------------------.? Don't you share information that you have found? I know some talk about McCain's dd's boobs and bras. Perhaps someone should have mentioned over <---------------------------- there that Meghan McCain needs a boob reductions. You know, she is very busty. It's not her bras. It's her boobs. What's really getting missed in all this, is that Sarah didn't fire the ex-BIL. She went after the police chief who wouldn't fire her ex-BIL. She fired him because his department did and investigation and determined that a suspension was sufficient punishment. But he wouldn't cave to pressure from her and Todd, so she fired him.
And, despite the lies by Sarah, she WAS found to have violated state ethics laws.
From the Dallas Morning News:
...found that though she was technically within her rights to fire the man, she violated state ethics law and abused her power in doing so.
Specifically, the report found, the governor allowed her husband, Todd, to strong-arm government employees in an effort to get someone to fire a state trooper, Michael Wooten, who was going through an ugly divorce with the governor's sister. The state investigator rejected the Palin family's claims that Trooper Wooten was a personal threat, concluding that the governor misused her authority "to advance a personal agenda."
Those darn "facts" sure get in the way of a good story, don't they?

I sincerely hope for his sake that his work was done legally under the supervision of his boss - who I understand is a licensed plumber. "
Madalyn, I'm sure you really feel bad for him. Please don't lose any sleep. I'm hoping that McCain pays his tax debt. I think he owes him that.
Yes, the media is quick to dig up ANY dirt that can on the conservatives. Hey, Joe, I'm going to write to McCain's website and suggest he pays your legal debt out of his own pocket..don't want to use campaign money. Oh, but it's quite okay to donate $800,000 dollars to a subsidiary of ACORN. Yeah, where's the justice!? And, some people even forget to list those donations. Oops! Another mistake or typographical error OR BONEHEAD idea.
-
Why are people freaking out over ACORN? I know Ohio ws a state in question but even if fake registrations were filed the fake person could never vote. According to what I read they were bogus names and addresses. I don't know how all states work but I do know how my state works. We recieve a letter in the mail shortly after the registration deadline reminding us of our voting location. Any letters that come back as undeliverable or unknown person or address automatically is thrown out of the registar to vote. So those bad addresses will come back and won't even have an opportunity to vote. You must show ID with the current address on it. Without that you will not vote. Our sign in books also contain your name address and signature so they are able to verify everything including your signature.
In fact in the primary I had recently moved and changed my voting address. All my family was moved to the current location but me. They would not let me vote because I was not on the books for their location. I made the comment that I would go to my old location since I would be on the books there and they contacted them to make sure I could not vote there.
Like I said I'm not sure about other states Ohio is not going to make a difference.
Another point, just because you donate money to someone doesn't mean you are the reason they do something bad that the org did. One of the people that registered more than once said the worker pleaded with him to fill out the form because he wiould lose his job if he didn't get all the forms filled out. Is that true? Who knows, but it doesn't mean Obama did something wrong. Is it possible McCain donated money to a cause somewhere that misused their money? Probably, does that mean he is responsible for their inappropriate behavior, NO.
Someone also quoted donations here and that obama doesn't give charitable donations. How did he give this organization all this money if he doesn't donate to charitable org? Just food for thought.
-
Obama represented ACORN, taught there classes, they intimidated bankers into making loans for poor people (I assume minorities). Do you have anything against anyone buy a home who must show proof they have an income and can make their monthly payments and have a job? I have provided so many Freddie and Fannie things, but if one wants to keep their blinders on so be it.
ACORN is being investigated by the FBI. I hope there funding will be taken away from them that the federal government gives them. I don't want my tax dollars going to them. Have you not watched the news? Have you not seen PROOF that they have hired prisoners, felons, even felons who stole identities? C'mon. I'm not believe this.
I GIVE UP. I really need to get off of here.
-
LuAnne, he gave the donation through his campaign funds. In fact, he or whomever "forgot" to list it and it was found out. I believe the charity was a leg of ACORN = THE SAME. Obama always pooh-poohs all dealings he's had with "questionable" people and organizations. That's okay. If he's elected..never mind.
Good nite

Suzfive--I think your post on senate staff salaries regarding Senators Obama and McCain is the most interesting post I've seen on any of these threads. It's a bit late in the day to be getting this information though. Is there any breakdown of staff by years of experience, job title, etc.?
It seems to me that if this is true, and the implications are true, that he discriminates, then it's fodder for a lawsuit. The anti-discrimination laws, I assume, are applicable to senate staffers. I'd like to know more detail. The devil they say is always in the details.
Grace--you know I love you, but I think Shirley has you on this one. You were a huge Obama supporter way back when. Remember how pissed I got when you suggested that people might not vote for Hillary because of the Vince Foster case.
My disclaimer. I am not in the least open and objective. I have never voted for a Republican, not even for relatives, and I have no intention in my golden years of reversing myself. I have loved a few, however. Thanks to Shokk, I now know how Republicans came about. Their mothers dropped them on their heads and shoved their brains to the right. If you shake them enough they might find their way home.
-
LuAnne--I vote in New York City and have never been asked for identification. I give my name, they open it to the page where I am registered and I sign. I believe this means that if the name is in the registration book they can vote. So we must depend on the registrar that the names are correct.
-
LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL Anneshirley about Shokk and how she became a republican. I'm still laughing...sure needed that!
I don't show any ID when I vote. I just sign. Simple. Any loon can do it.

The house and senate are exempt from EEOC and most all regulations that they place on everyone else.
Just think of how many sexual harrassment suits they would have otherwise.
As to the Troopergate Report. This is the quote from the report Finding
I find that, although Walt Monegan's refusal to fire Trooper Michael Wooter was not the sole reason he was fired by Governor Sarah Palin, it was likely a contributing factor to his termination as Commissioner of Public Safety. In spite of that, Governor Palin's firing of Commissioner Monegan was a proper and lawful exercise of her constitutional and statutory authority to hire and fire executive branch department heads.
That is a heck of a finding, likely, not more likely than not, not beyond a reasonable certainty, not did, just an official report that is an opinion.
-
BTW, Anneshirley, the children are gorgeous. I need to put a picture up of my grandbabies.
-
ibc--thanks for info on EEOC. As I was asking question I was remembering, vaguely, that you need the government's express permission to sue it. That stinks, and I hope this information gets out. I'd love to hear the response. I will wait to see how many women he appoints, and to what positions.
Shirley--glad you liked it but it belongs to Shokk; hopefully she won't charge me for using it. And, yes, they really are gorgeous--wish you could all see it enlarged.
-
Awww anneshirley the little darlings are so cute!

Wow I am shocked at how easy it is for you all to vote. I would think someting as important as this they would have more controls on it. Although Ohio is usually a tossup state so maybe they scrutinize us a little better.

This was funny tonight, finally some humor from the candidates, yay. Really, everyone laughed. A couple of things may sound kind of mean, but seriously, when the person spoke you knew it was all in jest.
Obama and McCain trade wisecracks, not attacks
By John Whitesides and Jeff Mason
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain shared the same stage and microphone again on Thursday, but this time they traded wisecracks instead of campaign attacks.
One night after battling in their final debate, the rivals in the White House race donned white ties for a more genial political tradition -- a New York dinner that has attracted presidential candidates in every election but two since 1945.
McCain told the glittering Manhattan crowd at the annual Al Smith dinner, a fundraiser for area Catholic charities named after the four-term former New York governor, that he had an announcement -- he had dismissed all of his campaign advisers.
"All of their positions will now be held by a man named Joe the plumber," McCain said, citing the Ohio small business owner who McCain made an overnight sensation in Wednesday's debate.
The Arizona senator also poked fun at his reference to Obama as "that one" in an earlier debate.
"He doesn't mind at all. In fact he even has a pet name for me: George Bush," McCain said.
McCain saluted Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York, Obama's bitter rival in the Democratic primary whose level of enthusiasm for Obama's campaign for the November 4 election has been a subject of great media fascination.
"I can't shake the feeling that some people here are pulling for me," McCain said. "I'm delighted to see you here tonight Hillary."
When Obama took the microphone, he said he needed to correct some misconceptions since McCain had been asking "Who is Barack Obama?"
"I was not born in a manger," he said, adding the name Barack, given by his Kenyan father, was Swahili for "that one." He also had an explanation for his middle name, Hussein.
"I got my middle name from somebody who didn't think I would ever run for president," he said.
Obama listed his greatest strength as humility and his greatest weakness: "I'm a little too awesome."
Without naming her, he also made reference to Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, McCain's running mate. She has been touted by Republicans for her foreign policy expertise because of Alaska's proximity to Russia.
Obama noted the dinner was held at the Waldorf-Astoria hotel.
"I'm told from the doorstep you can see all the way to The Russian Tea Room," he said.
The only times presidential candidates did not speak at the Al Smith dinner were 1996, when President Bill Clinton was not invited after he vetoed a late-term abortion ban, and 2004, when sponsors cited the divisive nature of the campaign and skipped the invitations.
Both candidates closed with warm words for each other, with Obama praising McCain's service to country in the Navy and as a Vietnam prisoner of war.
McCain noted Obama's history-making bid to be the first black U.S. president.
"I won't wish my opponent luck but I do wish him well," McCain said.
-
"Why are people freaking out over ACORN? I know Ohio ws a state in question but even if fake registrations were filed the fake person could never vote."
- They have same day voting - you can vote as soon as you register. So all those people in Ohio have already voted (they have been voting in Ohio since the beginning of the month). Oops.
"What's really getting missed in all this, is that Sarah didn't fire the ex-BIL. She went after the police chief who wouldn't fire her ex-BIL. She fired him because his department did and investigation and determined that a suspension was sufficient punishment. But he wouldn't cave to pressure from her and Todd, so she fired him."
- Yes, she didn't fire the ex-BIL because he didn't work for her. And she didn't fire the public safety commissioner because of her BIL, although that may have been one (of many) contributing factors (and rightfully so, in my opinion). She fired the public safety commissioner because of insubordination related to a budget dispute and several other things. The Alaska commission agreed that she had full authority to fire him and raised the issue of "abuse of power" only as it related to her not sufficiently controlling her husband's behavior with regard to the pressure he put on the commissioner to have his BIL fired. Read the actual report to get the real facts.
"It is my understanding that when 9/11 happened, Ayers comments were not directed at the 9/11 terrorists. Ayers was referring to the Vietnam war, and that he felt he should have done more protesting."
- That's true - his comments were related to the Vietnam era but he was most certainly not referring to a desire to have done more "protesting". What he said was ''I don't regret setting bombs. I feel we didn't do enough." Here's the original article from the New York Times: http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9F02E1DE1438F932A2575AC0A9679C8B63&sec=&spon=&pagewanted=1
"As for Ayers, yes he knew the guy, he apparently lived in his neighborhood. His terroristic activities happened years and years ago when he was a child. As for committees, if I am not mistaken Obama mentioned quite a few other prominent people that served on committees that Ayers did."
- Yes, Bill Ayers was a neighbor. In fact he held a fund-raiser for Barack Obama in his home in 1996. Oh, but I guess Obama didn't know him well. Huh??
- Yes, his terrorist activities happened when Obama was 8 years old, but when Obama was 40 years old, Ayers made the statements that I quoted above (and Obama was still on the Woods Fund board with him at that time). And Obama claims not to have known??
- It's true that many people worked with Ayers on various committees, but if you look a little deeper into the issue, you will see that there were certain areas where Obama and Ayers worked very closely together, with few other people. Minutes of various meetings prove this. One could argue that what they were doing was for the public good (and one could argue to the contrary as well), but why has Obama consistently lied about the nature and extent of his relationship with Ayers?
Folks, get your facts right... these are just a few examples. And here's a clue for those of you who get your facts from Obama and the Obama campaign. They lie. Openly and blatantly. For example, yesterday during the debate: When discussing the issue of abortion and the law to protect live births after a failed abortion, when McCain said that Obama voted against this bill in the Illinois Senate, Obama's immediate response was "that's not true" and then he went on to explain that it was in fact exactly true - he did vote against the bill - but AH! he had a reason why he voted this way. So in a single sentence, he lied and then totally contradicted himself. My suggestion is that if you hear anything from the Obama campaign, check out the facts from a neutral source. And if you are making your voting decision based on what you hear from the Obama campaign, boy will you be in for a surprise when it comes time for Obama to execute the plan!
-
The trooper admitted on TV that he tasered the child. It was his only interview. If dept. heads won't do their job, the buck stops on the Governors desk. The troopers boss gave him a 5 day suspension. Slapped his wrist for tasering a child.
But for the same reasons, you don't like Palin, I can double that for Biden. I could go on for a week, but I don't have to, he did himself in at his debate. They're still talking about it on the radio.
-
Summer, that was good. I believe LuAnn said to watch CNN because this was going on.

We haven't even touched on Tony Rezko yet. So much to talk about and so little time.

Ok, back to voting and the state of Ohio, sure you can cast and absentee ballot but they go through the same scrutinty as if you went on election day. I refuse to vote absentee because here they don't really count and validate those ballots unless counting those ballots would make a difference in the outcome of a election. Ex: (I know numbers are way off but just to make it simple) Obama gets 100 votes and McCain gets 50 votes. If only 30 absentee ballots were received counting them would not change the outcome of the winner so there is no need to include them. Right or wrong that is how they do it. Alot of people don't realize that and still vote absentee but I want to be sure my vote counts!
If they accept and absentee ballot and must count it they compare signatures and other info requested to be sure it is in fact the right person voting.
I learned this when my school had a levy that was close to passing. On election night it said we lost but absentee ballots had to be counted and because of how close it was required a recount. Took over a week to get the answer but we got our levy passed by about 5 votes. I use that as a reason for everyone to go out and vote because 1 vote did make a differencein that vote.
Shirley I was talking about that article Summer posted, it was much funnier to watch

Just curious, does Ohio newspapers not carry the story that their Sec Of State has been found in non compliance with federal voting laws. Or that she admits that there are over 200,000 questionable voter registrations but she refuses to release the list to county election boards so they can verify voters. Does it not report that the same day registration and vote one week period was something that had never been done or approved before for Ohio. That the Sec of State issued orders that bi partisan observers were not allowed to observe the voting as required by law on voting days. Does not the papers carry the stories of Obama volunteers bringing in students from other states, rent a house for a day an used that address to register them to vote, then carrying them to vote even though they never lived in Ohio. Does not the newspaper carry the fact that absentee votes are verified by the envelope, only against the voter roles (the one with 200,000 acorn registrations) and that the absentee votes are opened on Oct 25th, and after that the envelopes are thrown away. This means that the votes are counted and can't be gotten out of system. If the Newspapers don't carry this story, I hope Anne and Shirly go open a newspaper there. then you could get the facts.
