Wow, interesting stuff!  What are you saying about this thread shut down? I just got to it today... been busy with the cancer thing you know...  I also was once an independent that usually voted dem... I think I went with Dennis Miller... a few years ago, I just had to say, "enough"!!  Pelosi (sp?) aaarrrggghhhh!  She should get her own cooking show "Pork Barrel BBQ!  (I'll play the part of the charcoal).

    Daisy6, I have a PM for you.

    Good day, good luck, Joanne

"The poor will always be with us"  The definition of poor is what changes.  Not that many years ago, indoor plumbing, electricity, color televisions and wireless phones were all considered luxuries, now they are among the bare essentials.

No matter how much money the government spends to raise the living conditions of welfare recipients, they can never raise them above the poverty level because the definition of poverty will change in response to the money that is spent.

Should everyone in this country have access to food, clothing and a warm, safe place to sleep?  Absolutely.  Do we owe people designer clothes, gourmet food and palatial accommodations?  No

CNN also reported this morning that in addition to raising the tax on famililes that made more the $250k, he will raise the taxes on business.  If there ever was a time not to raise taxes on business it is now.  He must be out of his mind.  I have three grown children.  All have their own business',  a small Real Estate Co,  a Stone Wall & Patio Contractor &  a small Home Inspection firm.  They are barely surviving.  They all employ a total of 20+- people.  These are the type of small business firms that have helped keep people employed when the big firms laid off or went south (like Mexico south).  They are barely surviving in this downturn.  An increase in taxes will result in their cutting spending to make up for it.  It could even drive them out of business.  I cannot believe the bad advice Obama is acting on.

Pres. Obama has a slew of economic "advisors". My dh who is an economist himself is surprised that with the "talent" of some of his economic advisors he is planning these tax increases. I wonder if he is just not listening - maybe the advisors are just for "show" or if it is a case of "too many cooks spoiling the broth". Whatever the case is - he is crazy to increase taxes in a downturn like this one.

My son goes to a Catholic school and last night they had their annual dinner dance auction to raise money for the school. The theme was the 70s and it was hysterical to see how many people wore costumes from the 70s. Anyways, they have a silent auction and then for the bigger ticket items they do a live auction. Most years, the live auction items go for a minimum of $3000 each. This year, a week at a condo on a lake went for $875 - I told my dh we should have bid on that one! Only one item went for over $3000, a catered dinner for 12 or appetizer party for 40 and that one was bid up by the people who would be providing it! The school is in an area where some people are very affluent, some upper middle class, most middle class. This year we were able to get three items that we had bid on - most years we are out bid. You could really see the effect the economy is having on people. Most affluent people do not have pensions - they save and invest for their retirement and most have been hit pretty hard by the stock market nosedive.

Finally, there was an article in the WSJ yesterday about how no matter how much money you give GM and Chrysler - it will never be enough until they can re-do their contracts and get rid of the 30 and out policy. After working at the Big Three for 30 years you can retire with a full pension and health care. So, if you started working at 18 you can retire at 48! When this started in 1971 they did not think that so many people would want to retire early!! It is no wonder why they have huge legacy costs. My bil works for Cadillac and could have retired at 47. Many of the guys and ladies he started out with retired. He didn't retire because he wasn't sure what else he would do. Just think how many people are out their collecting a full pension and healthcare and have gone on to work other jobs - some of which they could also collect a pension for when they retire! That is why they can never be profitable building smaller cars here until they can reduce the legacy costs.

Everything is slowing down. We are in South Texas and my husband  is employed by a small (about 40 employees) oilfield trucking company. He is still busy right now but he is bringing in oil rigs to stack. Everywhere you look rigs are stacked. Some drilling companies have yards completely filled with rigs. People who have been in the business for years are loosing their jobs and alot of the small business owners are just not sure how much longer they can last.

Plants are laying off workers left and right. My son was laid off a month ago. Some of the plants in our area have shut down completely and may never open again. No one is hiring right now. Everyone my son has talked to is in a hiring freeze.

Even the farmers and ranchers in this area are laying off workers.

I don't know how Obama thinks raising taxes is going to help do anything except put more people out of jobs.Surely he has to be intelligent enough to see what is going on in this country or does he just surround himself with his worshipers and wear rose colored glasses!!!!!!?????

KDC, I sent you a PM.  When you are signed in on this board, there are black "buttons" with white text across the top of the page.  The one on the right "Private Messages" will have pink writing telling you when you have an unread message.

When you compose a reply on the threads, there is a blue checkmark with ABC above it in the grey bar at the top of the dialogue box.  That launches spellcheck.

trugrit.  please do come over.  it's so nice to be in a place where everyone is treated fairly without namecalling and false accusations.  the most upsetting to me anyway is the fact that one group is treated differently than the other group so my personal conclusion is that objectivity is no longer important.  at any rate i think you will feel more comfortable...we all do.  looking forward to seeing you.  maria

Well, dangit! After I posted about the Glenn Beck show on Friday, I just figured nobody would be coming back here. Now I hardly remember what it was about so can't even talk about it intelligently.

I've tried to register at the other place and haven't gotten a confirmation email? Wondering if I'm on somebody's s-list or something.

I got a pm today about it, too ... one of my posts was removed that didn't violate anything, the Gang just didn't "like" it so they off'd it.  That WAS a violation.  I complained to the mods, who agreed and said that they are just going to get rid of it totally.

Sorry to butt into your thread.
