Paige,
Do you sweeten your green tea? I know that it is supposed to be very good for us...I have a few nutrition books and it is mentioned in all of them as being very high in antioxidants. I would like to drink some every day but I have only tried it once and didn't care for the taste at all! How do you sweeten yours, if you do?
-
Nope- I do not. It's an acquired taste. My stepfather is Japanese and I had my first exposure to green tea about 30 years ago or more, so I have semi-grown up with it. You can sweeten it a little if that helps. Adding lemon also helps boost the antioxidant availablity. Just don't let my mom catch you doing it
Like a typical convert she judges you if you don't consume traditional Japanese foods in the "proper" way.

Ulla,
CONGRATS on the weight loss!! You should be very proud of yourself! I am trying to lose 5-7 lbs., to get back to my "pre-cancer" weight (I am 5'7 and 140...I'd like to weigh around 135)
but no matter what I do, I can't get that scale to budge!! I am (trying) to eat well and I exercise almost every day, but I just can't get below 140, darn it -- oh well, if that's my biggest problem in life, that will be just fine LOL
-
Yesterday 5/21
Breakfast- oatmeal, raisins, almond milk, coffee x1
Snack-Larabar, blueberries 1 c., 1/3 c lowfat yogurt (plain), 1/4 c. granola
Lunch- 1 can sardines, 3 pieces crisp bread, capers, lg salad- tomatoes, greens, onions, w/light dressing, 100 cal dk chocolate, coffee x 1
Snack- 1/2 c orange juice
Dinner- 1 small slice veggie pizza
Exercise- day off other than running up and down the stairs- worked 12 hours at the office
-
Ulla and Kim- It sometimes does get harder to lose the weight as you get closer to your goal. I have been stuck around the 127 mark for a few weeks. I am shorter than both of you I think- 5'4". I have lost about 23 pounds since just before diagnosis at this time last year. I know that for me to get unstuck what really works is to plan my meals the night before (at least) and stick to the plan NO MATTER WHAT. If I do this for a while the pounds will come off (and I won't have those not enough veggies days like the one I had yesterday. I find it is so easy to fool myself that I am eating as I should when really I am not.
I am going to set aside a little time to plan my meals this morning and then I will post what I am planning to eat as well as my planned exercise (swimming today- possibly a little run too).

Kim- wait till you read what I ate yesterday! I was really busy and I swam in the morning which made me insanely hungry. I didn't have the time I hoped to have for planning (going to do it today). Evidently I needed the extra food yesterday. I think among the sports that I do I burn major calories when I swim and get truly hungry to the point where if I don't eat extra I don't recover well. SO... Thursday May 22:
Breakfast: Oatmeal, raisins, almond milk, coffee w/orgainc milk
Exercise: swam 1/2 mile
Snack: 1 whole cantaloupe, 1 c blueberries, 1/3 c yogurt, 1/4 c granola
Lunch: grilled cheese, tomato, and onion sandwich on sprouted grain
bread, 1/2 a LARGE organic chocolate bar
Snack: 2 apples, Larabar, green tea
Dinner: huge bowl of whole wheat pasta, sheep milk romano cheese, 1 c + fresh tomato sauce with chicken sausage
Definitely some planning is in order. In addition to it helping to eliminate "irresponsible eating"
, it also makes life flow more smoothly knowing what's for dinner, etc., and it REALLY saves money and prevents wasting food. When I have done it before I've been amazed at how much of a difference it makes in the tidiness of the fridge and the cupboards. My daughter plans all her meals for the week just for practical reasons and she and her husband average about $50 a week on groceries- eating really well- organics and everything. She's a great cook which helps. Nice to have a child who inspires me!! In a couple of weeks the farmshare the we went in on together will be in full swing and the fresh local veggies will start pouring into the house. I am looking forward to this- especially the unlimited strawberries that will come in late Juneish.
-
Ulla- Your post brought me back to how I felt after my surgery- which, I suddenly realize writing this, was exactly 1 year ago today. Glad THAT's over with! I couldn't eat for about 20 hours afterward, it was awful. Hope you are feeling better and congratulations on being rid of the port- must be a relief!
-
Friday May 23

The goats were very, very cute and friendly, like little dogs but with hooves.)
Dinner: (planned) stir fry with broccoli, cabbage, snow peas, carrot, etc. chicken breast, hoisin sauce, and brown rice

Hi everyone,
Can I join too? Oh say yes pretty pleeeeze as I desperately want to lose some weight... well not some, my goal is to lose at least 22lbs by the same time next year. I had to take Decadron when I started Taxol in July of 2005 and since then, I've put on 22lbs. There was a number of times I tried to lose some extra pounds but no success. It's way too hard to lose weight if you've been on Tamoxifen (and I've been on Lupron shot too).
Anyhow, my yet another attempt started this past Monday. So far, I've lost 5.7lbs. Been trying to stay under 1500-1800kcal and avoiding as much carbohydrate as I can.
Friday (I'm like 12 hours ahead of you girls in the States)
Breakfast: 1 piece WW bread, low-fat cream cheese, 1 sliced low-fat ham
Lunch: omelet (2 eggs, 1/2 onion, 2 small green pepper, 2 small pieces low-fat bacon, curry powder), 1 piece WW bread, low-fat cream cheese
Snack: 3 small pieces bran biscuit
Dinner: Yogurt with crushed strawberries in it, 2 small pieces brown rice biscuit
Beverages: 2 cups coffee (with calorie/sugar-free sweetener and milk), 3 glasses Chinese green tea that is specifically manufactured to burn fat, 4 glasses pain water
Exercise: Commute to work by bike (approx. 2 miles each way)
4.6 miles walk after work

Hi Fumi, and welcome!! Congratulations on the weight loss! I am currently on Tamoxifen (for the past 9 months), and I am having a heck of a time getting that scale to budge! Of course, my past two days eating hasn't helped, LOL
I would like to drop 5-7 lbs. We can encourage one another!! BTW, where do you live?
-
Fumi- I am totally thrilled that you decided to join us! I always have enjoyed your posts and I LOVE your godzilla avatar- every time I see it I smile. I don't fully understand this reaction since I have no special connection to him or any other sci-fi monsters
. How lucky you can commute to work by bike. I wish I could do it every day but my work is about 11 miles from home. I may do it occasionally for an adventure this summer. My trip to work is very scenic, farms and back roads mostly so it would be nice.
Love and welcome- and love to you Kim and Ulla too! LOL I am feeling more expressive today, despite being a New Englander- FYI in this part of the country people are known for being reserved in expressing affection, even those of us who are secretly warm hearted by nature. Allyson

ps ..fumi ,,i too loved to read ur posts and so happy that u r with us here..
why everyone say its hard to lose weight with tamox??is it right even if i tried to minimize my eating sooooo much??
i realy need to lose those darn kilos..
-
Thanx for the warm welcome!
Kim, yep we can encourage one another, which is why I couldn't resist to be part of this group. We should keep motivating one another. I live in Japan where girls are supposed to be skinny, which really makes me look like a huge meatball.
Allyson, I too love your avatar. I am a cat lover (not only cats but all animals) and have two cats myself named Kiki & Toto.
I started commuting to work by bike in July of last year but had to quit it in August. I got terrible sweat rashes all over my middle area as there're no places at my work where I could change my shirt nor have a shower. I'm afraid I may have to quit it again when it gets hot and humid. Plus those stinky hot flashes make it worse. If that's the case, then I will have to do more exercise. A good friend of mine burned an AB jam and workout programs (20 minutes for each called Turbo Jam) on to a DVD so I am thinking to do them when it rains or I can't ride a bike.
Ulla, you look like a barbie doll in your avatar! I don't want to scare you but Zoladex is much worse than Tamoxifen in terms of weight gain. So be careful and you may want to work harder than you do now. Just keep watching your weight. The sooner you notice any gain, the easier you can lose it. It's hard to lose weight when you're on Tamoxifen or Zoladex because your ovaries produce almost no estrogen, your body looks for elsewhere to get needed estrogen from and stores whatever it can find in your belly fat. Fat cells in your body can produce estrogen, so your body works harder to convert calories into fat to increase estrogen levels. That's why almost every woman end up gaining weight when they are going through menopause.
Anyway, everyone have a great TGIF. We can do this together!
xo

Another animal lover here
(especially dogs)
I asked my oncologist at my last check up about Tamoxifen and weight gain. He said that it can make it hard to *lose* weight, but he wasn't sure about weight gain (who knows???) Anyway, I am trying, trying to lose those 5-7 lbs., I know that doesn't sound like a lot, but I feel SO much better physically and mentally when I'm around 135 (I'm 5'7).
I am just so hungry all the time, darn it!! :-O
-
TY FUMI FOR UR NICE WORDS ABOUT MY AVATR,,THIS WAS 3MONTHS BE4 DX..SIGH
NOW I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF TAMOX AND ZOLADEX CAN COZ WEIGHT LOSS!!!!!!!AS I AM NAUSEATED AND HAVE THIS STOMACH PAIN WITH THE TAMOX,,AND FEEL LIKE I LOST MY APETTITE,,I HARDLY ATE THIS WHITE BREAD PEICE TODAY AT LUNCH WITH HUPPY..AND COULDNT EAT ANYTHING TILL NOW..
I JUST HAD A GREEN APPLE NOW WITH THE PILL TO MINIMIZE THE STOMACH PAIN..
ANYONE FEEL THE SAME..??
I HOPE IT WILL STILL LIKE SO...
LOVE U

Ulla- I can't say about the tamox effects as far as the stomach upset because I take Femara plus the Lupron shot every 3 months (I get the long acting- it comes in 1 month and 3 month versions). Maybe check the hormonal treatment thread titled "Bottle o'tamoxifen" (or something like that? I find for stomach irritating medicine in general it helps to take it with a more starchy food and or milk, rather than fruit or vegetables. Maybe the anesthesia is having a lingering effect? I had one incident of having anesthesia last year prior to the breast cancer and it took me about 3 days to get my appetite back- so unusual for me since normally I am always hungry .
I agree with Fumi - I always think how beautiful you look in your avatar picture- very Swedish with the blonde hair too- LOL. Seriously, I thought you were a Scandanavian beauty until I learned you only recently moved there.
Fumi, Kim- I am an animal lover too- cats, dogs, and now pigmy goats after the adventure this afternoon.
-
Ulla, I hope you are feeling better soon! And I agree with the other girls, you are very pretty!
