The below is a revison from Edge, for those on an AI, especially Aromasin and Femara. The inhibitors are in addition to no crucifors. I really do wonder if this has any validity. Beth
Dear Betty:
Quick refresher: Not onion (or garlic), a potential CYP3A4 inhibitor, and celery, parsley and parsnips may also exert some CYP3A4 activity. But these should be fine:Asparagus, carrots, cucumber, endive, fennel, Jerusalem artichoke, Japanese eggplant, jicama, lettuce, potatoes, all sea vegetables (hijiki, kumbu, wakame, etc.), spinach, all squashes, sweet potatoes and yams, Swiss chard, and tomatoes, among others.
Peppers are also not a problem but the capsicum component can aggravate hot flashes if that is relevant. Phytoestrogens as I have documented are not a clinically significant problem, and fruits other than grapefruit and seville oranges are also generally not an issue. -
i couldnt understand the above post!!!!!!!!is it saying no for all the foods mentioned??tomatoes also..??or is it yes??
anyway

Ulla- your confusion re: the dos and don'ts post is understandable. Beth (the person posting) and I have discussed the topic of certain foods that may interfere with aromatase inhibitors (AIs) due to the metabolic pathways affected by chemicals in the foods. You are on tamoxifen so you don't have to worry about this issue. It is good to be aware that certain antidepressant medications can negatively affect how much your body can put the tamox to good use.
Despite the occasional moment of weakness I think all of us (all 3!) are doing a great job with the healthy eating and exercise. I notice I do better at getting enough vegs if I make a soup. Also I overeat less when there is a soup around because I tend to eat the soup vs bad foods that might otherwise tempt me.

Ulla, don't beat yourself up; we all have days like that!! I just had one LOL
-
Ulla- as Kim said, don't beat yourself up. We all have days like that and sometimes it's even nice to have a day like that and enjoy a good meal without fretting over it. The tikka sounds delicious.
Just enjoy the little break from being strict and get back on track tomorrow.
Tomorrow will be my day to have some things I don't usually eat, like ice cream cake, a FAVORITE junky food I almost never eat. My daughter is having a master's degree graduation picnic and that's the dessert she chose. Hopefully the morning workout will balance things out a bit.
-
Congratulations to your daughter, Paige!

Hey girls, just have to share...my husband and I went to a health fair this morning and I asked the nurse who measured our body fat (!) about the connection between sugar and cancer/cancer recurrence. She hadn't heard anything about it (causing a recurrence). I told her that I had (love saying HAD) breast cancer and that I am trying to eat very healthy now, She stuck out her hand as if to shake it and said "Well, sister..." It took me a minute to figure out that she too, is a survivor. She told me she had breast cancer **29 years ago**....positive lymph nodes, chemo, mastectomy, rads, the whole 9 yards. She looked to be in her late 60s, so she must have been fairly young at diagnosis. I became very emotional when she gave me a hug and whispered in my ear, "You are going to be okay. There are MANY of us survivors out there, and many of us did not have the wonderful treatments that you girls have today." She brightened my entire day and I wanted to share with you girls. This disease IS survivable!!!!!!!!!!!! {{Hugs}}
-
Kim- thank you. Also thanks for that wonderful "bedtime story" (I am running to bed as usual. Especially nice to hear around this 1 year anniversary period- had the first bad mammo on 5/8/07 and had the mastectomy and positive node discovery on 5/23/07 (I was on the fast track to treatment which was good). Just to share in a similar hopeful vein, my SIL had breast cancer over 10 years ago with either 17 or 18 nodes positive and has remained NED. It is nice that there are these unexpected connections that happen now and then with strangers who turn out to be sisters.
-
How wonderful about your sister-in-law, Paige!!
My mom's best friend had breast cancer 6 years ago and opted for no chemo (she had positive nodes). No chemo, no Tamoxifen (and she was ER +)...and she has been NED since her mastectomy!
My own mom had breast cancer 22 years ago (a very early stage...0 or 1 I think)...but no chemo, rads, anything. She just got back from a cruise with friends and is going strong at 75 years old!
(and I was tested for the gene since my mom had bc too...I was negative...guess it was just a fluke for both of us)!
-
Kim-
What a weird coincidence. My mom had breast cancer 25 years ago and is 74. She had tubular carcinoma (wish I'd had that!) and had lumpectomy and was in a clinical trial of the radiation tx where they thread radioactive rods through the area and keep you isolated during the tx period (couple of days?). My breast cancer is I think totally unrelated to what she had, although it is tubulo-lobular which I hear has a slightly better prognosis than regular lobular.
Despite not enjoying the chemo, etc. (to put it mildly), I can't imagine not having had it and I definitely love the Femara and Lupron. Even with stage III breast cancer there is a 50% chance of disease free survival with surgery alone so half of all women not getting tx are going to be lucky. Me...I am obsessed with getting every percentage point advantage that I can, trying to get those stats in my favor. Even if it doesn't "work"
, I will look and feel great trying
.
-
Paige,
I'm with you...I too am obsessed with getting every percentage point I can in my favor! I was diagnosed on 10/31/06, and they wanted to start chemo a few weeks later...I fought to have them start me the very NEXT DAY...I said "Hook me up to that IV NOW" (in a nice way, of course) ;-) There was never any question that I would do WHATEVER necessary to help ensure that I am here to raise my three girls. They started to go over the treatment options (chemo/no chemo, etc) and I said I didn't need to hear anymore...I wanted chemo and whatever else they needed to give me to make me well again!! I had 4 A/C and 4 Taxotere (with a mastectomy in between) and am now on Tamoxifen. I am praying that I can stay on some sort of estrogen-blocker med for the rest of my life -- I figure after 5 years on Tamoxifen, I can go to Arimidex and am hoping that in 10 years, they have more meds out there -- I'll keep going with them!!!
And wow, that is a coincidence about your mom!! Glad she too, is doing well!

Breakfast: 3/4 c. oatmeal w/2 tbsp. wheat germ, 1 tbsp. raisins, 1% milk; English muffin
A.M. Snack: 1 c. watermelon
Lunch: Two corn tortillas (cut into triangles and baked); 3/4 c. pinto/refried beans/salsa; 1/2 c. strawberries; iced tea
P.M. Snack: Handful almonds; small bunch red grapes
Dinner: Two hard-boiled eggs on top of one piece whole wheat toast; 10 frozen cherries
Dessert: Blueberry smoothie (frozen blueberries, plain yogurt, 1/2 c. orange juice)
Yikes, I didn't eat any veggies today!! AND I was bad after dinner...won't even say what I ate. Okay, I will. Two chocolate chip cookies AND an ice cream sandwich
(((( I can't have this stuff in my house anymore...I have a sugar addiction and have to keep it AWAY!! I am so ashamed of myself..
-
Kim- Your attitude about treatment is identical to mine. I've told people that if my oncologist said it's been discovered that there is benefit in another round of chemo I'd be there with the IV in my hand tomorrow (and I HATED chemo with all it's dragged out depressed baldness scariness etc etc). Anyhow...yesterday was a day off from careful eating for me (as planned). I can say in general what I ate but after breakfast the boundaries between meals and snacks are blurry.
Saturday, May 17th
Breakfast- old fashioned oats, raisins, almond milk, coffee w/organic l.f. milk
Other eating during the day- brie and crackers, spinach dip w/pumpernickel bread, 1 + c cantaloupe, Amy's California burger, potato salad, green salad w/ Amy's rasp. vinagrette, whole wheat Greek pasta salad (tomatoes, Greek olives, cuke, lemon, olive olive, oregano, basil etc), sliced turkey, light organic grape juice and seltzer (my fake wine at the party), huge serving of Friendly's ice cream cookie cake.
Exercise- swam laps 1/2 hr, 1/2 hr walk, played wiffle ball 1 hr.
Ulla- How are you doing? I hope you feel better about your lunch out after reading what I ate yesterday! LOL
-
Oh- my husband is working on convincing me to go to Las Vegas with him next month- he has to go for work. The barrier is my severe fear of flying
. I am considering going and am looking into how much antianxiety drug I can take without accidentally killing myself LOL. You live in Nevada don't you? Maybe you can convince me how great it is to go there and that will help. Ulla I would like to come to Sweden but I have some serious work to do on myself before I am ready for that trip!

Ulla,
I hear you! I have a terrible time sticking to a healthy eating plan on the weekends! But I think that's excellent about doubling your walking time to "make up for it" ;-)
Paige,
I am not crazy about flying either, but I will tell you that Las Vegas is a lot of fun!!! I think you'd really enjoy it! (we live 5 hours from there but make the trip 2-3x/year). And I totally agree with you about going through the whole chemo process again if necessary...I was sick as a dog (a bald dog, LOL) but I would do it all over again in a heartbeat if it meant saving my life!

Paige,
How exciting, I hope you have a great time
So you live in an ultra-rural area too? I bet I have you beat. We have lived in a small mining town for the last 9 years (pop: 800), and we are 2 hours driving from a town of 40,000 (where we grocery shop) and 4 hours from the nearest city (Reno). I am from Reno and the bay area before that so I am a true "city girl". 9 years out here is more than enough, IMHO LOL! We are moving to a town right outside of Carson City and I can't wait...I am SO excited to get back to CIVILIZATION!! >;-)
