The History of the Middle Finger
Well, now......here's something I never knew before, and now that I know
it, I feel compelled to send it on to my more intelligent friends in the
hope that they, too, will feel edified. Isn't history more fun when you
know something about it?
Before the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, the French, anticipating victory
over the English, proposed to cut off the middle finger of all captured
English soldiers. Without the middle finger it would be impossible to
draw the renowned English longbow and therefore they would be incapable
of fighting in the future. This famous English longbow was made of the
native English yew tree, and the act of drawing the longbow was known as
plucking the yew" (or "pluck yew").
Much to the bewilderment of the French, the English won a major upset
and began mocking the French by waving their middle fingers at the
defeated French, saying, see, we can still pluck yew!
Since 'pluck yew' is rather difficult to say, the difficult consonant
cluster at the beginning has gradually changed to a labiodentals
fricative F', and thus the words often used in conjunction with the
one-finger-salute!
It is also because of the pheasant feathers on the arrows used with the
long bow that the symbolic gesture is known as "giving the bird."
IT IS STILL AN APPROPRIATE SALUTE TO THE FRENCH TODAY!
And yew thought yew knew every plucking thing. -
The Good Old Days
A sales clerk asked his boss how to handle people who complained about the current prices compared to the low prices in the good old days.
"Just act surprised and tell them you didn't think that they were old enough to remember them." -

Vickie -
good morning friends. Yesterday is done. The funeral service was amazing. Thank you all for your prayers and for those who signed the online guest book. Your thoughts and kind words are greatly appreciated.
Most likely going to brother in laws hunting camp tomorrow for a week. Egads camping in the deep woods of georgia for a week. Just what I'm itching to do. Normal people in the south have condos at the beach. But noooo this dear family wants to go kill bambi and porky.
I'll be thinking of you all next weekend.
Love you all to bits. -
Don't know why I picked this one, its looking like rain this morning! Hope everyone has a great day!
-
Good morning!!
Shirley.. please tell where in the "deep woods of Georgia" you will be. I just might be near there... you never can tell.
Vickie... hope you got that out of your eye. Reminds me of a sermon I heard once when the pastor had given us all
2" X 4" pieces of wood before the service. He preached about not saying anything about the speck in our brothers
eye when we had a plank in our own. I kept mine with me for a long time, usually putting it in my mouth to bite on
so I would keep my mouth shut. Have such a big problem with speaking without engaging brain first. Never mean any
harm...
I awoke this morning to the glorious sounds of laughter. Miles' roommate Richie spent the night last night and his
girlfriend, Lori came over early this morning. They are all going to be camp counselors this week at Woodland Christian Camp. I smelled the coffee first, then I heard
the sounds. A light tap on the door was followed by the
door opening, Miles walking through smiling and saying..
"Momie (his special spelling).... we have coffee." I got
a big good morning hug and then a cup of coffee and then
I just cherished the sounds of their fun and laughter. How I have missed that! A nice present to start the day.
Well I gotta run hop in the shower to make it to church.
There is a wonderful show on called "Ultimate NASCAR: Families" that features the Petty's, the Allison's, and
the Earnhardt's. Reminds me of the old days when I loved to watch NASCAR. Kinda sweet and sad as well.
Hope you all have a wonderful day today. Thinking of you all with love and hugs. Pam -
Well, here we are in Cooperstown..today are the baseball inductions..we do not have good internet here so I have to keep this brief..hope everyone going to Pinkstock is packed and ready to go if not already close by..
Hugs to everyone..
SoCal -
It felt so good to wake up in my own bed. Today I'm forgetting all about it and going to enjoy my sisters cookout. Tomorrow I'll get back to calling the docs.
Z - We're here for you in good times and bad. Write when you're up to it. Big hugs to you.
Nicki - I couldn't sleep so figured it was a good time to catch up. But I'm feeling better today. I'm home and that's a huge plus!
Jasmine - Happy growing hahahaha You Always make me smile!
Peter - Goodnight Mate! Glad to hear your brother is better.
Jankay - Ouch, you might want to get to a doctor for that finger if it's still hurting so much.
NOW I know every plucking thing! LOL
Vickie - Thank you for your special prayer. It means a lot to me. Boy I hope you got whatever out of your eye. That really hurts. When it rains it pours huh?
Shirley - I vote for the condo at the beach! Glad you're getting that time with your family. You all need each other now. Big hugs to you.
Wild Jan - Beautiful golden sunshine image!
Pam - What a sweet awakening!
SoCal - Amazing picture as always!
Odalys - Very cool!
Gotta go, smell bacon .. yum! Everyone have a wonderful day!
Charlene -
Good morning CG's
Nicki - yes, it is the same nurse who scared the heck out of me. I really don't know what 'spa day" is - I'm just guessing its the part of his practice that is for the 'beuatiful" people. He actually has his plastic surgery practice and this other practice - they have seperate entrances but share the same reception desk, just with different sides. I'm guessing spa day is for botx and all the other things that people pay for to be 'beautiful' - don't really know and don't really care. I am just so annoyed with it all. I knew that the post-op visit would be with his nurse. I plan to give her a piece of my mind and tell her I plan to let him know how I feel as well. I think my next visit with him is one month post op.
vickie - sure hope you got whatever was in your eye out.
Shirley - I hope you have a nice time camping. these days my idea of camping is a cheap hotel!!!
WildJan - what a nice treat to wake up to laughter
SocalLisa - beautiful picture
Jankay - you always have the best stories. Hope your finger is better
Angel - glad you are feeling better. the lifting restrictions are the pitts - I just can't wait till tomorrow to get a shower. I am tired of a bath with water up to my waist and trying to get my hair washed.
Z- I am so sorry that you are having a tough time. Please know that we are here to support you in anyway we can. Share what you want andkeep what you want private. we won't intrude on you. You are a wonderful and classy lady. I am glad that the surgeon vist went well, but sorry to hear of a possible concern of necrotic scar tissue. Keeping my fingers crossed that all stays well.
Peter, Alwayshope - glad to see you checking in. Warm wishes to all the CG's that I have not mentioned. Also, I am another CG who will not be a pinkstock
Stomach is still not right - spending too much time in the bathroom since the ER visit. Seems like anything I eat is going right through me. The last time I took anything was friday night - you would think it would be out of me by now. going to go get my "bath" - if you can call it that and get dresses. Want to try to go through my pictures today to see what I want to get printed. If I wait too much longer, i won't remember what anything is. Maybe I will finally figure out how to post an avatar as well as post pictures here. Also - since so many gals have a My Space, maybe I should check it out.
Wishing everyone a good day. Again, thanks so much for all your support. It means so much to me. Hugs from Denver, Karen -
Good morning, my friends. Hope all is well with you. Wishing all of you a relaxilng or at least fun sunday. I have to find home for Mork & Mindy. My husband was very upset because they keep getting out of the huge backyard, which has an electric fence around it. I griped about my pups all week-end, and anything else he could think of. Don't know what got into him, stress I suppose. He gave me a week or he's getting rid of them and I cannot let him do that. I'll find a place for them. It's sad, cos they're good dogs. But he has been furious over them and as sturbborn as he is will not give in.
Thanks to all of you who voiced concern for Ambers job, she'll either find another one or she wont.
Nicki, glad you feel better today, you missed a great party last night.
Shirleyl, so glad to have you checking in.
Janny, you should be coming home anytime, just long enough to do laundry and go to Pinkstock.
Karen, wishing you a speedy recovery.
Charlene, well I think I didn't recognize Chris because I was looking at a well built man in a shower, didn't think to look at his face. hahah
Z, well it was nice to have gotten acquainted with you and perhaps you'll come back again. You know you dont have to be in hish spirits to post here.
Charlene, pain meds make me swell sometimes.
CherylCY, so good to see you post. I think it's a great idea to take the extra dau off. You wouldn't to feel good for your trip. Have a wonderful time, you deserve it.
Mena, we had fun last night and i'm sure we both needed the laughs. Come out and play again some day soon. Turn on your Yahoo IM and it makes it easey. Last night was kinda like old times.
Gina, i miss you come home.
To everyone forom Amy to Z have a good day.

i aways thought you were just a "private" person ........ surely to goodness you're joking with gina, i just know you're pulling her leg!!!!!!
no way would gina leave ANYBODY out intentionally! -
Nicki, I was just scrolling again. The only pic I have seen from you is of your dog Mister. Is that what you are talking about?
-
THANK YOU SHEL!

Gina, I hadn't ever seen a pic of Nicki either, but somebody said there's one on Illinois Group thread but i'm not sure what forum it is.
Nicki, you have to let her know where your pic is at coz it's not easy to find. She didn't mean to slight you, it was honest mistake she doesn't even know what you look like. Was it that you wanted the horse pic and your pic and didn't get either?
Simple. Let Gina know where your pic is located and she said she can go back and add it.

Sorry friend, Nicki. I wasn't sure if you were joking. I think I better stay out of this one. You are both great ladies. Remember, we are all on the same team fighting one enemy. JMTCW
