Good luck, Raye, and have fun in NC!
Thanks, BethNY for the "recipe"! I can't wait to try it out...

I always had weak nails, but they were so bad after chemo that the oncologist suggested visiting a dermatologist. She suggested trying two things. DermaNail comes in a small glass bottle with a plastic applicator resembling an eye dropper. It is expensive ($25-$30 if my memory is correct) and should be applied to the base of the nails twice a day. However, it seemed to work wonders. I had to ask the pharmacist to order it. Ask for DermaNail, nail conditioner. It is made by Summers Laboratories, Collegeville, PA 1-800-533-SKIN or go to www.sumlab.com
She also recommended Neutrogena Instant Nail Enhancer. I used both and while my nails are still not great, they are back to normal. (And maybe better than pre-chemo.)
My mother highly recommends something with green tea extract by Sally Hansen. Sorry but I cannot remember anything more.

Boy did I get behind on this thread. Was keeping up with it because there are so many good tips, but now I'm about 6 pages behind. I'll catch up later, right now I have a quick question:
After reading so many posts about it, I bought the Smash Box primer. However, not having the $42 bucks to spend on it, I bought it off e-bay and even though it was sealed, it came without a box or instructions. So my question is. . .Do I need to let it dry or anything before I apply my foundation? I love the way it feels and can definitely see a difference after applying it.
Thanks!
-
Hi, girls. I've been MIA for a few days because of houseguests. Fun, but exhausting.
Sheila, use just enough PhotoFinish to glide on the skin, but not enough like you're moisturizing or something. A thin coat is all you need. If it's thin, you really don't need to wait to apply your foundation.
I use the PhotoFinish mostly in areas (nose, tops of cheeks) where I have larger pores. This really prevents the foundation from making the pores more noticeable.
I have not used Windex, but I have used sudsy ammonia, straight up, to clean my rings. I've just soaked a minute, then used a tiny brush, like an eyebrow brush, to gently scrub under the prongs, etc. Sparkling every time. My jeweler told me about this and that it was as good as those special jewelry cleaners in a jar that you can buy. Windex is loaded with ammonia, so I guess that is what makes it work so well. So, grab whatever you have on hand and go at it. Just be sure not to scrub too hard and loosen your settings/mounts.
Raye, I never had ANY pain when I had an expander, so it's not a given that you will. As with everything else, there is a range of pain on a scale of zero to ??? I know some women suffer greatly. I dont know what makes the difference. Keep us posted on your decision and progress. Boy, those long legs, that curly, black hair and then boobies, too? Well, there will be no keeping up with YOU, lady.

-
Thanks Tina. This stuff is wonderful! I do think I will just try using it on my problem areas instead of all over my face.
-
Hm. I just use the window cleaner maybe with water. why microwave it?
-
My guess is that heat melts the body oils and dirt. I've usually heated my cleaning solution for my jewelry.
-
Well, lookee here. Interesting article about stuff in makeup.

Have a wonderful weekend, ladies!

Something about the heat getting the dirt out-- I just know it works--
Tina- is this article going to make me regret putting makeup on every day? lol
Okay, for all the curly haired ladies-- I totally forgot to mention one of my great summer tips. I thought about it b/c it's 95 degrees here today, and beyond disgusting outside (and my AC is on the fritz). The product is called Sun Silk Hydra TLC 24:7 creme. It comes in a bright pink bottle, and you can get it at CVS for around $5. After you shower, whether you use gel, mousse, or whatever you use- or nothing at all, after you comb through your hair, shake it out, and put a little dollup of this leave in product in your hair. You can add it to your gel, or use it alone-- and it really helps tame the frizz on days like this...
I'm sorry I didn't mention it sooner.
have a great weekend.

added to say I just realized that I wrote the 1000th post on this thread....
we really should write a book.

Hey chicas! I'm gonna re-visit the topic of wax to report that Nair has a hot wax product out that is actually better than the much more expensive Poetic Wax. It spreads on a little thinner and so you use less and the cup of wax lasts longer. I also "invented" a little trick for applying the wax that uses less simply by holding less on the applicator. I use wooden Chinese chopsticks (the wider end usually)! I have a whole bunch of them in a kitchen drawer and these are so perfect. Also, they make it easier to end the long stringy threads that trail on the dollop you're trying to work with....you just twirl around and around until the thread breaks. And the chopsticks can be stocked up on and you just throw them away after each use. Those tongue depressors that come with the wax are too wide, not easy to handle and not easy to replace.
In other news, I've discovered that my eyes actually look significantly larger and more open if I eliminate eyeliner. I'm surprised since liner is supposed to enhance the eyes. I'm also a bit disappointed since I only started using eyeliner after chemo. But it's a very noticeable difference, so I'm giving up the liner. It'll save me money at least....

Marin, you have been out having way too much fun. We've missed you.
Good point about personalizing all these beauty tips. It's great to try things, but what works for one may not work for another. The biggest trick is knowing which ones are for you.
Nail polish news: I received an email from the site where I bought the Zoya polish saying they were named the longest lasting polish. Have not checked out the site, though.
Speaking of Zoya, we haven't heard from Raye. Are you out there? I hope it's nothing we (I) said!
-
I think that Raye might still be on vacation in the Outer Banks. I'll bet she'll come back to us all tan and gorgeous!
~Marin
-
Zoya rocks!
Hey Girls - I've been on vacation- we spent a week on Ocracoke Island in the Outer Banks of NC. It was soo relaxing - no stress and strife and I still feel a bit of that peacefulness - I hope it lasts at least until next Monday! Also got a nice tan, but didn't overdo - used a 30spf daily.
Marin - Funny you should mention not using eyeliner and the difference it makes in the look of your eyes. I, being a big user of eyeliner, didn't use it for two weeks before vacation and my eyes looked bigger, browner and I actually looked a bit younger and more innocent heh! (that always a big plus - the younger part of course). I've got just a bit of liner on today to go with my glow (a litte bit of Physician's Formula brush on bronzer over my slightly tanned face).
I have to ask Beth a question about BOOBS, but don't want to hijack the thread, although boobs of the fake persuasion could be somewhat entitled makeup or fashion, right?
Raye
-
ha Marin - we posted at the same time! yep, you nailed it honey. Got me a little tan going on.
-
Marisa? OK, I guess Brett should really come first, huh? But I'm waiting for your "waxing Poetic" story
!~Marin
-
Marin I think Marisa's story about poetic was in the beginning of the thread-- or was I wrong?
Raye I saw your post about expanders or not, and that's an individual case by case sitaution-- I think you got two different opinions from two PS's? fill me in
-
Beth - was that a pun ... "fill" me in?
-
Regarding eyeliner ... when I was in France, a French girl showed me how they do it ... only eyeliner on the top ... from the interior all the way to the exterior. Mascara on the bottom only, but I have to at least put a smudge on the outer corner.
-
Beth - Yes, I received two differing opinions. The first ps (I consulted with him three times) told me he would have to stretch the skin with expanders, I would have my fills, then he would do exchange surgery, it would take forever, blah blah; when he could easily do a TRAM. I had a strong feeling he really didn't want to do the lat flaps. Now,this other ps, whom I've seen twice, states he can insert the implants directly under the lap flaps during the operation - no expanders needed, but the implants will be small - B cup, which is fine for my build. He would make the transverse back incisions, so they could be hidden by my bra strap or bikini top. I like the idea, just wanted to get some thoughts. Thanks for listening and any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated. And ladies - sorry to interrupt our make up thread with talk of boobies. Little ones.
Rocktober - that avatar simply cracks me up. Leave it for a while - it brightens my day.

How I do eyeliner: Only on the top and starting not at the inner corner but leaving about 1/4" bare, then a fine line, increasing in width to the outer corner. I apply the pencil liner OVER but as close to my lash base as possible and smudge it with a pointy tip applicator after. Leaving the inner corners liner-free helps make the eyes look wider-set. You know. Avoid the "old beady-eye" look.
I've never used liner on the lower lid but tried it once or twice and didn't like the effect. It does tend to make the eyes look smaller, although, in my case, I do have large eyes, but it looks too harsh on me. I still plan on trying a light application of blue liner on the outer third of my lower lid UNDER the lashes. Like where you might put a small swath of eye shadow. I don't like using shadow there because it dusts down onto my cheeks.
Raye, it's okay to talk about boobies here if you want because it IS a cosmetic issue, isn't it? FYI, there is a possibility I may have a lat flap added to my free TRAM flap because the FT flap is not big enough. I don't have much flubber on my back but the ps said that was okay because I just needed a little more foob. (Not his way of putting it.) He could, alternatively, use a small implant but I am not crazy about the idea. OTOH, I could just live with what I have and say to hell with it. It's not that bad. We're all thinking of you as you try to make this big decision.
Marin, I've gone back to using Nair depilatory on my upper lip hairs as it doesn't hurt and lasts a couple of weeks, anyway. Such a sissy, even for beauty.
-
Raye I like option two, and surgeon number two. Lat flap (and they should be concealed by bra strap if done correctly) and implant with a B cup- which is great for your tiny frame.
I do my eyeliner the same as Tina- I leave the inner corners bare, and start with a thin line where the brown color of my eyeball starts and widen the line toward the end. This is very easy to acheive with the eyemarker from physicians formula that I've been raving about.
If you're beyond eyeliner, and want to make your eye look bigger, think about using a highlighter color. The easiest way is to go to MAC and ask for the highlighter brush, which is a small thin brush and ask them for a natural highlighter color that goes with what you wear on your face daily as far as makeup.
When you're done with your eye- base poweder, liner mascara or whatever-- you take the highlighter shadow and dot it in the INNER corner of your eye. It opens it up and makes it look bigger. You can also use a thin sweep of this color directly under the eyebrows.
-
Want to add that, instead of highlighter shadow, I use my YSL Touche Eclat not only as concealer but as highlighter at the inner corners of my eyes and sweep it up a bit. Looks very, very natural while opening up, visually, the area.
-
Thanks Beth and Tina - yes, I like option and surgeon 2 better- just scares me to death. The ps said I'd be fine physically and the only thing I wouldn't be able to do would be rock climb, which I don't do anyway. He said that there is a risk of capsular contracture on the irradiated side. Oh well, enough of that. Thanks again girls.
Eyeliner: depends on the day with me. Some days I use liquid. others I use pencil - typically a dark brown, rarely a black. The only thing I do not do is line my upper lids, as they look ridiculous lined. I have deep set eyes and lining the upper lids makes my eyes look almost closed. Not a good look. I sometimes line the entire lower lids, sometimes only half, sometimes inside the lower lid and out, some no liner at all (as of late). Love to try different looks.
Did someone mention facial hair? I was at the Lancome counter before vaca and much to my surprise, saw a faint mustachio. I thought it had gone blonde and was invisible to the naked eye. WRONG. I am going to get some of that facial Nair again and do my side burns and mustache. Waxing scares me.
Raye
-
No, no, no...Marisa has a new Poetic story as it relates to the childbirthing event. I asked her over on her announcement thread whether she had waxed for the occasion and she said she'd come over here and give us the scoop; hence my question. And speaking of waxing, Raye, I was terrified the first time because I'd actully tried it a long time ago and found it so painful that I almost left the wax on, resolving to just cover it up and hope for rapid disintegration. But the newer waxes (like the Nair microwaveable stuff) are SOOOOOO easy! I swear that I almost enjoy it! But for the face, it might be hard to wait until the hair is long enough to wax, so I think that the cream depilatory is probably best

After 18 mos, I finally got a perm because I was really tired of flat straight hair. THEN, of course, the humidity went up like a rocket and it rains every afternoon! FRIZZ city.
I took the above advice, but bought SunSilk Captivating Curls at Walgreens (forgot it was supposed to be at CVS) but it does the same thing: smooth curls---no frizz. After my swim, I just wash/rinse, and add this stuff (green plastic bottle) and go. If I want to dry and curl it, I wait till I get home from the pool and it's already dry and ready for the curling iron and doesn't get as frizzy as before.
Thanks for the info, even if I didn't exactly the right thing. LOL

I dug up a picture from over a year ago, and I literally fell in love with my old hair color: see picture.
I want YOUR HONEST opinion. I am coloring my hair in 5 days (cutting too) and I think I want to go back to being this shade of dark brown and get rid of the red.
all advice welcome:

-
Oh Beth!!!
Whoa mama - you always look great, but you look fantastically hot with that dark brown! I love it on you!!! I'd go with that color if I were you. It's simply perfect with your eyes and skin tone. Am I gushing???
Raye
-
I agree with Raye, Beth. The red is fun (and frankly I think that you look gorgeous no matter what your hair color is!), but that rich, dark tone is absolutely stunning...and really classy! I say go with the dark brown. It gives you more latitude with your makeup too....red can be sort of limiting, ya know?

Vote: dark brown!
