I use a brow pencil when I am in a hurry .... I have them in dif colors since I had so many wigs.  Not to mention, I love to put a red color in my hair and need to use it then to cover my blonde brows. I will use a brown brow pencil sometimes during the winter when highlights are not prevalent or when I use a lot of eye make-up.

Normally, I use Avon's brow powder compact that's like the one Laura uses.  I have even used it as an eye shadow if I lick the brush and run it like eyeliner and in the creases then blend a bit ...

The second image has the white eyeliner just under the black and then white eyeshadow along the brow arch and into the inner part of the eye area.

Thanks Kelly dear! I will give it one more shot! I think one of the problems is that my eyes are so damn small! I think I remember watching my Mom put on make-up when I was "a little girl" - I think she pulled her lid toward the outside of her face and then put it on? Does that sound right?

GIRLZ - One more thing...if you don't already read Allure Magazine...buy one! It's packed with makeup hints, product reviews, free trials, etc. I brought my last three months of issues with me to MX...as I hardly have time to read at home.Check it out!

I have used the Anastasia in Ash.  The brow powder, that is.  Has two shades and works pretty well.  I understand they have a complete kit with eyebrow shaped stencils.

Laura, I was watching the Today show about how to put on the eyeliner and they said that was a no-no, to stretch your eyelid outwards to be able to put it on.  HOWEVER, that is what I gently try to do.  The liquid eyeliner glides on so I don't have to do that.

Regarding the liquid eyeliner instruction I've been given, it was given from beautiful girl in the fashion capitol of the world:  I was in France and the girl told me to "avec les yeux ouevre" ... with the eyes OPEN.....  to go from the interior to the exterior of the eye with the eyeliner and not on the bottom, only mascara.

I do follow her instructions and sometimes, I will then take a dark brown eyeliner pencil and just do the bottom corner of my eye afterwards or use the mascara wand extra heavy on that corner ... so as to get some of the mascara on my lower eye rim, not just on the lashes.

Rocktober - Thanks for the tip on applying the white eyeliner.

I have a brow powder as well - but find that I like the pencil better - I go easy with it, so as not to look too clownish (Laura - you crack me up girl - "send in the clowns" - ha).

Going to Florida next month and am afraid I must hit the tanning bed to avoid burning  - I am going to deem pre-vacation tanning a prophylactic endeavor.

    Hi Ladies,

I lost my eyelashes and use an eyeliner on the top lid. I use a grey and smudge it. Unfortunately, the Taxotere keeps my eyes so watery, it is gone in 10 minutes.

When I began this journey I was doing some retail therapy and splurged on some Erno Lazlo products. I figured I was saving on hair products, cuts and colors. They have a product called C-10 ($75). I REALLY does lighten and remove age spots from the face. I use MAC cosmetics which is a heavy foundation and also concealer for the spots. I am no longer using the concealer and can even now go with just a moisturizer w/ mac powder. Since using the Lazlo products, my skin is really looking good. It helps since I gained 20 lbs and have the moon face. Beware though, their products are pricey. But I have not bought anything without having them give me a week's sample to try. Everything I tried I liked and bought.

I have not used the MAC blush or eye shadow. Does it stay on well? I heard they are coming out with mineral face powders. Can't wait to try them. As for lipsticks, I like the Max Factor 2 step color lipstick. It stays on for about 18 hours. If I put it on at night, even after washing my face, it is still there in the AM.

Oh, Debbie, another MAC lover.  Beth has been telling us how great that stuff is.  I'm gonna have to try some products.  Ladies, what are the best ones to start with?

Almost forgot to report on my Neutrogena dermabrasion kit.  It came in the mail yesterday and I tried it last night.  All it is is this funny, little vibrator thing that you attach a pre-filled applicator pad to, wetted out, and use it on each area of your face for 1 to 2 minutes each.  I was scared to go the whole time for the first trial so just did about 45 seconds on each cheek, forehead and chin, so maybe 3 minutes total.  Thankfully, this morning I woke up with no redness or irritation, so tomorrow night I will use it again for at least 1 minute each area.   Well, that's a start.

Oooh! This is so much fun, I'm so glad I asked! ;)

Tina - I would say a good place to start if you want to try MAC for the first time would be with the eyeshadows. Ask the sales person (and dont be surprised if it's a guy in full make-up) for a primer/paint. I use a neutral that can also be used on the lips (great under deep reds to keep from bleeding). Then have them show you the color you're interested in. For example, if you like purples, there will tons of them. They will ask you questions and help you find a great one for your skin color. It's a little pricey, but not too terribly bad. If you start with just the eye shadows it's not a big investment if you dont like it - but I bet you'll love it!

If you're trying MAC for the first time, instead of buying separate eye shadows, have them make you a pallette.  It consists of four shades.  The base, the crease, the brow, and the highlighter.  Then ask for a demo, and have them explain how to put it all on.

The key is on their brushes.  They have the best brushes ever.  They make applying makeup super easy to do.

    Beth,

LOL @ "the abyss"!!!  Could you fill me in about how you use the powder with your brows?  Mine are sort of "spotty" and I don't have much luck with pencils. The hot flashes usually melt it right off!

So, where does one buy MAC cosmetics if not online?  Dept stores in my area are down to Macy's, Kohl's and down.  Nordie's is about 1.5 hours from here.  Do they carry MAC?  Now, I am really intrigued.

I keep forgetting to mention that I have a good book about skin care and procedures, Your Best Face, by Brandith Irwin, MD (woman).  Now I see that she has a new book coming out this month, The Surgery Free Makeover. http://www.amazon.com/Surgery-Free-Makeover-Need-Great-Younger/dp/0738211184/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1205418286&sr=8-1  Some of you may want to request it from your libraries.  Her first book is very good and free of "fluff," just the facts, ma'am.  I assume this one will be equally good with updated information.  (2008 vs. 2002)  If you go to her website, you will see product information and can find out what she, herself, uses.  Still, she recommends lots of easily available products from the drugstore, including Cetaphil.

    Here's her site: http://www.madisonskin.com/company/irwin_bio.asp

No affilitation.  Just think she is a good source of info.

I just discovered something wonderful about Aquaphor.  It's great for lips!  So healing!

Now, you girls that have some in your medicine cabinet, try it on your lips and you tell me if you think it very subtly changes your lip color a shade or so.  Just a blush of rose.  I swear it changes mine.

Tina - I am definately going to try the Aqua - I have some left from radiation! And since my lips are STILL traumatized from my MX experience...the timing is perfect! Thanks!

    GIRLZ -

OMG - I am a little slow...I bought a small round magnifying mirror that has a suction cup on it. I attached it to my bathroom mirror. (My eyesight for reading isn't so sharp anymore.) So yesterday, I put on my mascara as usual and then looked in the mag mir! OMG - I couldn't believe how horrible it looked! LOL So I removed the mascara and re-applyed it while looking into the mag mir...night and day! I can't believe I have been looking like such a mess. LOL Again...send in the clowns! LOL I cannot leave home without (using) it! No, no, no...

Also, in Allure Mag they said to dip a q-tip into your moisturizer to clean up any mascara mistakes...it really works well.

Hope you have a ravishing day!

We have a MAC store in one of our malls. I avoid it when I'm broke because it's just chock full of gorgeous, yummy stuff!

I'm wondering how you eye makeup pros get the effect of the outer corners lifting up rather than drooping and looking tired? I read an article yesterday that gave step-by-step directions for making the eyes "larger" but it advised using a darker shade on the outer portion and a lighter one on the inner part of the lid. When I try that, my eyes seem to droop, so I'm wondering what I'm missing about this idea. Do most of you alter the shade over the area of the lid?

I've been playing with the Cargo white stuff and think I'm starting to get better with it but have decided that I wish it did not have any glitter in it.  Also, I like it better (in the inner eye corner) applied on top of my Touche Eclat concealer.  I think that slight opacity of the concealer makes a good base for the white.  The effect from a couple of feet away is very nice and, as promised, very "awake."

I really like using the Aquaphor on my lips, applied THINLY, as it is not as viscous or waxy as most lip products.  If I put that on, then the O-Gloss, applied with a fingertip, the effect is so natural no one would say "That woman is wearing makeup" but it gets rid of that one color paleface look I have au naturel.  It's a real cheater solution!

Did a search on the MAC site and found out that although they do sell through Macy's, the small Macy's near me does not carry their product. Yell  I guess I'll have to drive the hour and a half if I want to see their stuff up close and personal.  I'm such a country bumpkin.  Hate to get into the car and drive into the metro area.  Embarassed  Maybe I should just order off their web site???

Marin, I don't know if this will help, but try using your eyeshadow over the lid as usual, but put a little dot of the white or something light right in the middle of the lid, over the pupil.  See if that works.

OK, now I've really got to try this Photofinish. I think a trip to the mall is in my future.

Here's my immediate concern -- dry skin around my eyes. I've finished my Clinique All About Eyes moisturizer and I was wrong about my other Clinique samples -- they were for the skin, not the eyes.

So, what do you folks recommend for moisturizing around the eyes?

Marin I think it's all in the brushes you use.

This is why I love MAC.  They have one brush that you use on the shadow that goes on the lower center lid.  Then one brush which is a blender brush that you use for the crease and blending.  Then there's this angled brush that you use for the outer crease with the darker color-- its the hardest stroke to master.  Then there's the highlighter brush which you use for the corner of your eye, and under the brow line.

I'm telling you, I was lost with eye makeup before I got the MAC brushes, and I took a lesson.  They will apply makeup and give you a free lesson if you commit to buy three to four items, which could easily be a palette of eye color, and three brushes.

Make sure the artist draws the diagram on the face with the eye, and writes down the steps in number order.

With a little practice, you'll be doing your eyes like a pro, and there will be no droopiness whatsoever.

Love this thread. When you're old(er) and feeling washed out, blah and fatigued, a little make-up can go a long way to making one feel better.

I have discovered Aveeno products for facial wash and moisturizing sunscreen. I bought them at local CVS stores. I do need some help with bags under my eyes. Anyone have a suggestion for that? Since my eyes constantly water (probably due to chemo - the gift that keeps on giving) I don't use liner on my bottom lids. It usually ends up smudged under my eyes by days' end.

The mineral products are too drying for my old(er) skin - and seem to emphasize the wrinkles. I often mix some light foundation with moisturizer to get even coverage without looking "made-up."

I like the MAC eye shadows because of the large array of choices and the color seems to stay on pretty well. Bobbie Brown (more $$$) also has great shadows that go on very smoothly.

I have always been kind of tomboyish even at 49 so makeup has always been hard for me. Love this thread. I got so excited I went out to Rite Aid and found some Maybelline Quad that tells you what to put on lid, crease, brown bone, and corner. (I need help) I have always been a pink or sand wearer. They also had some Revelon Quads for Buy one get one free. Of course I got the pink and splurged with coastal colors. Can't wait to try them out.

My best friend in college was a makeup artist. It took her 1-2 hours to get her makeup on. Me....10 minutes. Then she would fix me up and it would be amazing, but I could never get the hang of it. Are there any eye make up manuals that I could get? After all this, I want to really look feminine again.

Also, nailpolish. I always paint my toes.....so sexy. Very rarely my nails. Until Taxotere messed them up. I used to love Cover Girl Nail Slicks because they were so glossy. I put on polish on my nails (base coat, 2 coats of polish, and shiny top coat) and still after 2 days, the ends begin to wear off. What polish is everyone using and what colors?

Ok, I will try some Photofinish when I get a chance.  I heard a rumor that Sephora has free shipping??

Regarding the eyes, Marin, I use a facial highlighter on my lower eye socket bone, upper cheek bone???  I swipe is up to the outer part of the bone.  I do use the white stuff I got at the MAC counter for the inner part of they eye and then I use dark in the crease and outer corner.  I was told that whatever is on top of the eye must go on the bottom.  So I have thin layers of eyeliner, and white eye shadow in lower inner corner, I have the dark eyeshadow come from the upper outer corner come round under the eye.  Just kinda make the shadow make an upward type peak or upward turn?

OK. So I have never heard of photofinish.....checked out the Sephora website and found it under Smash Box. But there is more than one Photo Finish product. Which one are you all raving about - and what does it do?

Still wondering how to correct bags under the eyes? Any suggestions? Have tried mixing a few different concealers with a little moisturizer (so as not to look cake-y) but it seems to lose its "conceal" fairly soon after application. Tried a few different make-up counters at Nordy's. But each product seemed to emphasize the wrinkles - not smooth them out.
