Oh Sue , I am sorry , I had to leave for a while. I agree with Karyll. I used a small pillow and placed it between my arm and side. That seemed to help. And I also had pain meds. Did they give you any? I hope so. And like Karyll said , take it easy. Don't do to much to soon.

Sue , I meant I thought my calendar at work said "Sweetest Day" under the weekend of the 13-14th. I will check it out tomorrow. Because last year I had a calendar that had a month that was off by a day! If it was Sunday the 14th. , it read Sunday the 15th. But this time I have a feeling it was me that was off!lol
Oh yes , we celebrate halloween. I love it. It was my favorite holiday when my son Adam was little. I would decorate our house up to the max.It was so much fun. I don't think we have bonfire night , but that sounds like fun too. Sweetest Day is when you take your sweetie out to dinner , or make them dinner or buy them flowers , candy etc...
Well , Sue I hope your pain eases off. It should get better each day. I know when I had my biopsy they said I could use ice 10 mins. on and 10 mins. off. They said it was a natural anti-inflamatory and it was ok. Not directly , of course wrap the ice in something so its not touching you directly. Let us know how your doing. Hugs , Melody

Hi Sue,
It's just after 6.30 am here. I am so sorry you are in pain. The pain levels really vary with mastectomy. Somebody on these boards said recently that if the surgeon cuts the major nerve, you tend to have less pain and more numbness but that if they leave that nerve undamaged, there is a lot more pain.
Most of my discomfort came from the build-up of lymph after surgery. It seems that in the US they leave the drains in for much longer than in the UK and Australia. (I had mine taken out on day 2 or 3) It's nice to get them out early but then you have to deal with the lymph. By the end of the first week after surgery, it looked as though I had grown another breast to replace the missing one! My surgeon aspirated it a couple of times then I started having lymphatic massage every week which really helped.
Karyll is spot on about the painkillers - make use of them! They will help you to get a good sleep and that will assist your body to heal more quickly. (But you might need to take laxatives to avoid the usual side effects). And the small, soft pillow under the arm really helps to cushion the area and keep the arm away from your side.
love & hugs

Well from a distance, it seems you are well supported, Sue. Do take a look at you're underarm area for swelling, as re-accumulation of the lymph fluid as Karyll said, can really cause pain. If your bandage covers the armpit area and lateral chest wall, you're doctors may consider removing your bandage early to check for this fluid accumulation (called a seroma, and occurs up to one-third of mastectomy patients). They just drain the fluid off with a needle, which you don't feel because you are numb there.
Taking pain medicines on a every 6 to 8 hour basis rather than on an I need one 3 hours ago basis is important too. But if there's something related to the incision, then that needs to be directly dealt with.
Since you're going in tomorrow for your tongue, they can check then. The tongue is thrush, just like you said, from the antibiotics and other medicines. So an antifungal will help, one which you swish around in your mouth and swallow, to coat the throat and stomach area.
Yogurt with live acidophilus, like plain low fat yogurt, will help restore the proper balance of gut bacteria. It's a good food, especially home made.
Goodness, it must be close to 12 midnight in England. Sorry you had a bad bout of pain, and am glad tomorrow you see your doctor.
Sweet dreams, Sue.

Thx Tender xx
The surgeon told me she took all my lymph nodes and there were very few..hardly any...I dont think I am capable in my build to have much swelling....but I will feel better if doc checks me....my dressing goes all the way under my arm...so think it is rubbing....
Well it is 22:15 here so I am going to rest and have a strong cup of tea....my cat Zippy has been plastered to my side ever since I was discharged..hes a pain in the bum...but we have a bond bigger than the best super glue and hes behaving like a clingy little babba...grrrr...
Have a lovely day...I put a support sleeve on my lower arm as it feels like it is broken and bruised xxxx

Hey Sue , just a FYI about Sweetest day. It was started by a gentleman in Cleveland Ohio back in 1922. He wanted to bring happiness into the lives of orphans and shut ins. So he would take them candy and such. It just kept going and more and more people would carry it on over the years. It is very popular in the Great Lakes area of the U.S. but other states celebrate it too.So it is really to show appreciation for people you care about. So next Saturday , I will be telling you Happy Sweetest Day!xx

Ahhh what a lovely story really endearing.....you really live in a vast beautiful country...I did Florida in the nineties and went to see the space shuttle take off...what an amazing experience...

Hi sweet Sue, it is Shirlann. I wonder if you have fluid build-up, here, most of the time, you go home with the drains, empty them yourself, etc. It is a wonder we do not do our own surgeries! But, the point is, you very well may have fluid build-up. This can be taken out "aspirated" very easily in the docs office. Then, sweet relief. So go Monday and check this out.
For goodness sake, take drugs. See, times have changed, now it is "Better Living Through Chemistry". So get those pain pills and use them. You actually get well faster if you are not in pain.
Love you sweetie, Shirlann

Hi Sue. I know you're already in bed, but I just wanted you to know that I checked on you today. I've been cleaning for hours. Tomorrow I'm having port placement surgery and I start chemo on Wednesday. I don't know how I'll be feeling later this week, so I figured I'd better do what I can while I can.
I'm sorry that I can't help much on the topic of mastectomy, but I see these ladies are giving you tons of helpful advice.
Take care and I'll check on you again tomorrow after I come home from the hospital. Sorry that you were so uncomfortable today.
Love and hugs,
Karen

Sorry Sue...I won't tell you that I had almost no pain...really I won't.
However, for sleeping, I have a microbead pillow that I hug when I sleep. Snuggling it against my chest made it possible to sleep on my side much sooner than I expected. For positioning the arm away from the body, it is absolutely ideal. You can squish it around exactly how you want it.
Being nearly healed, I don't really need to hug my pillow at night any more, but it fits so nicely where my breasts used to be, and is soooooo cozy.
Here's the kind I have:

Sue, I just love reading your posts. And everyone else, your advice is great. I am preparing for surgery, and all this advice is fabulous!
Sue, keep that sense of humor so you can keep the rest of us laughing. Hope you are feeling well!
-
I do hope you are keeping your pain under control Sue and good luck at the doctor's tomorrow - or I should say today. The time differences are confusing sometimes. Loved hearing that Zippy is sticking by you, the dear furry boy!
The reason why I get up so early is that daylight saving hasn't started yet (sun gets up just after 5!) and I have a neighbour who has roosters that crow and a guinea fowl that makes loud clicking noises very early in the morning!
Karen, I will be thinking of you tomorrow/?today when you have your port placement and I hope so much that you have a minimum of side effects from your chemo.
love & hugs

Hi Sue. Hope you're having a good day. You're constantly on my mind. Please take good care and let us know how you're coming along with the thrush. How miserable for you.
Love and hugs,
Karen
-
gb, thank you for your concern regarding my port placement surgery. I've been home for several hours and I'm feeling quite good. No pain at the site yet. I'll let you all know how the chemo goes after Wednesday. I'm hoping not to spend the night on the bathroom floor
.
Hugs,
Karen
-
Hi Karen , I'm glad your home and all went well. Good luck with your chemo. I will be thinking of you on Wed. What kind of chemo are you having , and how often? I had 4 of a/c every 3 wks. I felt crappy for a few days , but was never on the bathroom floor , and I pray you won't be either! Hugs and Prayers to you , Melody
-
Thanks, Melody. I'll be having six sessions of TAC, once every three weeks. I'm hoping it won't be a miserable experience.
Take care and thanks for your well wishes.
Hugs,
Karen

....a week tomorrow...I will find out whats gone on inside me...I have butterflies and a tummy ache now...lol....GIVE ME STRENGTH....my head is like a grasshopper overdosed on caffeine ...and I am stalling bcos I have to make the effort to go out or I will cabbage and grow roots...cya all later
-
Sue, I love some of your comparisons (grasshopper on caffeine). You do need to rest and let your body heal itself. I took it easy 2 weeks after my double mast and did not go anywhere except to the doctor. I stayed home on my easy chair and watched my favorite movies, sometimes I would drift off with the movie playing and wake up to see the credits running. My surgery was 5 months ago and I am feeling great now but still watching how much I lift. Don't worry about becoming a cabbage and growing roots. You will do great.
PS, My avitar is my basset hound Penelope. she has been my team mascot for the Komen Race for the Cure for the past 5 years. She loves the attention.

Have been sleeping in front of the idiot box. Just have to make the effort to go to bed.
Hang in there Sue - of course you have the jitters - it's horrible having to wait again. Am already crossing all my fingers and toes for the best possible result next week.
Sheila, Penelope looks like a very sweet dog - I'll bet her eyes melt hearts!
hugs

Oh my Sheila Penelope is gorgeous xx
I hope youre having a good sleep now gb...I hate waking up in front of the TV and making the effort to go to bed...I have just trawled back through thr thread looking for the time difference so it should be Wednesday at yours now LOL...
Well I went out and did some x**s shopping
...i know its only October...but whence I am back to work and add the treatment to that I will only have time to sleep ...
Hope everyone has a lovely day xx
-
Hi Sue,
Glad you went shopping, definitely therapeutic for a woman. Is it getting cold there at night?
Did your doctor take a peak under the bandage? I don't know why I ask, because she's your doctor. I'm sure she's on top of that underarm pain. Guess I'm just old fashioned curious what she made of it.
I'm glad you're feeling some better. You certainly sound like the Sue we've come to know and admire!
Thinking of you,
Tender -
Tender...the dressings are still on, there is no swelling but the feeling of inflammation all down my arm and under it ...is getting worse and more unbearable..what causes this on fire feeling....its making me cry with exhaustion...
It is getting colder and darker here in the UK .... we had our very worst wet summer on record it was appalling...
Hope you are well xxx
-
Sue...sometimes, not so infrequently, you develop a reaction to the tape holding the bandage on. Actually, some are allergic to surgical tape, paper tape, any kind of tape and they get redness, burning and skin peeling. I guess that's why I wonder about the bandage.. maybe you could talk with the nurse.
Perhaps some here have had "tape" reactions and can better describe them.
Does it look red where the bandage ends, and the area next to it?
Tender -
Some parts under my arm under the tape look red....but the burning pain goes down my arm, mainly severe under my arm. Right Tender I am off to see the nurse tmw...I wonder if she would be able to take the dressinng off? Its been a week now ....I will ring the surgery and make appt...althought the burning pain is on the back of my shoulder too,it is very very annoying and has made me cry tonight....Thx for your help Tender xxxx
