OHMYGOSH!!! You guys are AWESOME! I was so surprised when I went to pick up the mail today. My son grabbed the package and popped it into the trunk because it was raining;then we went to lunch and shopping, so I had lots of time to wonder what on earth was in there and why is bc.org sending me a package? LOL!!!!!

My afghan is the one on page 20 here. It is absolutely gorgeous! THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!! My mom is visiting from out of state -- I was just sitting there in awe, stroking the afghan, and mom was crying because it is just such a wonderful thing you have done for me! I am going to try to get a picture of me snuggling up with it soon to share with you guys.

One other thing: I am a yarn-a-holic and knit and crochet. I LOVE making squares, but never manage to join them up together. I would love to make and send some to you guys to put in an afghan. Do you have a certain size or other details I need to know? I have lots of worsted-weight 100% cotton yarn as well as acrylic. I am the leader of our prayer shawl ministry at my church, so this is right up my alley! BTW...there is an absolutely gorgeous stitch in my afghan that looks like a braid--I'd love to have the pattern for that!

Again, you guys, I am absolutely thrilled that you took the time to do this for me!!! I can't even find words to tell you how much I appreciate it!

You are more than welcome to join us in making the squares...the more the merrier! The squares are 7x9 inches...any color...any pattern. I think that there is a pattern posted here somewhere and I'll try to find it later.
    Enjoy!

Badboob, as Vickie and all have said, I am so happy that the afghan has reached you. Please know that we all care very, very much...
You are welcome to join us in this project. It is a wonderful project.

The pattern is posted on page 1 or 2.

I am sure one of the wonderful individuals that made these squares will "fess-up" as to who made the braided square.

I AM SO STRESSED THIS IS MAKING ME CRAZY! I cannot do it. I have been working on squares for weeks, crocheting, undoing, crocheting, undoing, crocheting,..... you get the picture. I started reading this thread from the beginning tonight to see if anyone else was having problems like this. I read every post up to page 8 and whatever problems anyone had they worked out and sent squares. I am THE only one that can't do a simple crocheted square. I'll bet I'm the only person in the free world that can't learn it. I have yarn stacked up all around my computer desk and work on it while pics are downloading etc. I've bought alot of yarn. I've actually put together 6 so-called squares that are all uneven and too big. I've unraveled a 100! OK, I told myself just buy the Knifty Knitter and my problem is solved....I really don't think it's that nifty. My daughter is now using it to make a pink baby blanket because she wants to get pregnant with a baby girl and she says "If I build it they will come." I can do the double crochet stitch quickly by now but as it goes along it either gets really small or really big. So all of my 'squares' are tapered!!! I can't get the end of the line thingy right. That damned turnaround! I know I'm probably making this way too complicated but I just can't get it right. If I ever could I'd be sending bunches cos I have alot of free time. It really is getting on my nerves. I'll keep trying though. Now it's the principal of the thing! All you girls that didn't know how to crochet are sending squares left and right and then there's me. I will get this right if it's the last thing i do!!

I appreciate you letting me vent.

Cheri, the turn around is the most difficult part because that is where stitches are lost or gained....hence the uneven square.

If you are doing a double crochet stitch -
when you come to the end of the row and are "turning" your thread - you will do 2 chain stitches (this counts as your first double crochet on the next row) and double crochet in the 2nd chain from the hook..

When you are at the end of a row REMEMBER THAT THE 2 CHAIN STITCH you made to turn CONSTITUTES A DOUBLE CROCHET AND YOU HAVE TO DOUBLE CROCHET IN THAT CHAIN 2 STITCH (just grab the 2 loops of the top chain stitch and double crochet in it).

If you are doing a single crochet stitch...then you chain one, then single crochet in EACH chain across the row (you don't skip a chain in the single crochet piece)

I can send you a square that I have constructed so you can have one completed to compare.

    Let me know..

(((Cheri)))...you are not supposed to get stressed about this! It's supposed to be relaxing and fun. I had a hard time with the same thing when I first started...maybe try using a larger hook and practicing that way...it will be easier to see your stitches. Once you get that conquered you will be able to use any size and not have a problem...

Cheri, I'm sorry you are so stressed. I was pretty nervous about sending my squares. I do the knitting with needles method, but it seems like I can never get a perfect 7 inches across. I take out and recast over and over again. When I compared the ones I sent they are not all perfect 7 by 9, so I almost chickened out. I think Vickie and Madison are evening them out a little when they put the whole thing together. I hope you don't get too discouraged.

Sheri, I had the same trouble with the knitting. I thought it was just because I was a beginner knitter and couldn't work out the gauge properly. I finally went to crochet and I'm using the afgan stitch (tunisian crochet). Its pretty easy to work out the 7" across with this method, I just have to watch for the 9" now.

Good Morning Everyone. I cant believe this thread is only rated 2 stars. Just wondering if you all know how to rate a thread? Go to the very bottom of the screen and it will ask you for a rating. I have already put in a 5, but someone - probably the lurker made the rating lower.

So give you 5 star ratings everyone!

I still havent mailed my squares! What has it been 2 weeks that I have been talking about it. Gotta do it this coming Monday.

Can't believe my first contact with the breast cancer group involves knitting/crochet. I am very enthusiastic. Belong to a group at church which makes prayer shawls for anyone with special need. I ended up being the first recipient. Very special. Am nearing the end of radiation. Feeling a bit sorry for myself today. Please someone send me the guidelines about the project. I can knit or crochet. By the way, have made it through 2 hip replacements thanks to great web site "Totally Hip". I am expecting great things of you all!

Welcome bettystjoe! Its so great to add another knitter/crocheter to our group.
The squares are 7x9...any color, any pattern and any yarn as long as it isn't wool (so it doesn't shrink). There is a pattern here in the thread somewhere but it can be whatever stitch you want.
When you are ready to send the squares you can pm Madison or me and we'll send you our address. We will put your squares in an afghan and we always post pictures of the finished one so you can see your squares.
Sending you hugs...you've been through a lot by the sounds of it.

    Cheri,

Let me add my wishhes for you to not stress out and enjoy the time you spend crocheting. IF there is a yarn store near you, find out when their "open" night is. This is a time for people to bring in projects they have questions about, or questions about technique. Ok, inhale, exhale, repeat!! It will be ok.
