    Just got back from the gym & OMG, Ryan Gosling!!!! I forgot all about him. Pls add him to my WANT list (every time I watch The Notebook I still cry). As to Shatner & Bieber - sorry, we're gonna just say no (we already see way too much of them here). Gotta admit you do have some good looking guys up north. And we do covet Trudeau, especially these days!

    thanks for the post. Weight loss is a huge concern for me. Cats feed cancer and I've got quite a few pounds to lose. Am well versed in healthy foods. Could use some company in adopting a sustainable eating lifestyle.

    Oneof7 - Hello & welcome! You’ve picked a great group of folks to climb on board with. The peeps here are a varied crew, always fun n’ friendly, so goodcompany on your trek is guaranteed! They sure put the sunshine in my day! Do you follow a particular regime? Tell us a bit about yourself if you’re inclined :)

    I just HAVE to ask, was your ‘cats feed cancer’ statement a typo...or is there something I didn’t know about felines? I’ve always been a dog gal myself, and cats scare me somewhat, but now I’m wondering if my fear had a basis :))))

    egads... typo -- fats feed cancer. Lol. My regime varies. Been a myfitnesspal patron for a while (food log app)

    I eat chicken and fish. Very little red meat. Big fan of fruits 2nd veggies. Lazy about prep. Eat sandwich about 2x a week. Hamburgerb1x a week. Big sweet tooth which i have cut back on recently. But i still have a sweet or two everyday. I had been having a bag of candy for dinner ouch!)

    I'm overweight. Used to be vegetarian. Read alot about nutrition. High glycemic vs low glycemic etc

    Need to get back to healthy...

    Oneof7 - I feel your struggle. I've often said I have a sweet tooth the size of Wisconsin. Your desire for healthy is your best tool at this point....and it's great to see your want for change. I can tell you this, I tried every diet regime going and nothing worked. I was always crabby, hungry, feeling hard done to, and worse of all, still overweight. I think I hit rock bottom when I finally decided to give paleo/primal a shot. It was my last resort as I saw no wheat/grain/sugar/processed foods as insanity....and avoided paleo for years. Boy oh boy was I wrong! From my first meal forward I was shocked at the fact that what I was eating (awesome food) kept me full, never felt like I was suffering. This was bolstered by the fact that the weight dropped off (60 lbs)....effortlessly, and no frickin' calorie counting....god I hate that! I just had to keep mindful of carbs. I've never looked back. If you'd like to try a one week test/challenge, we're here to help you. If not, then stick around anyway, we all learn so much here, and have a laugh....always a good thing! :)

    SpecialK - LOL!!! I hear they're best served with a nice little chianti and fava beans (said in my best Hannibal Lechter voice) ;))))

    Fats feed cancer?????? Why am I on a LCHF diet then???? Holy crap that nodule on my lung must be HUGE!

    My hubby like's to call our cat, actually all cats an a-hole. I like to to call her Lucifer! She is a killer for sure, always bringing home dead things and eating them - birds, frogs, mice, toads, sometimes she just leaves them with pieces missing for us to clean up.

    I cheated yesterday, I didn't want to but I feel like crap so hubby brought home pizza, mine was at least gluten free. It was awful, the chicken crust and the cauliflower crust is wayyyyy better! So it was not a good cheat, disappointing actually. Then I topped it off with a frozen yogurt bar!

    TUTORIAL THURSDAY- INTERMITTENT FASTING (oh I KNOW you've all been chomping at the bit for this...NOT :)))))

    "An "intermittent" fast is an extended period of not eating done for the express purpose of weight loss and other health benefits."

    A fast is a hormetic stressor, the 'good kind' of stress. When done right, fasting will trigger our bodies to respond positively, making us stronger and healthier (think 'what doesn't kill you makes you stronger'). Very simply put hormetic stress kicks in a series of defense mechanisms that helps the body react and bolster against damage when that same stress is encountered in the future. Kind sorta like the your very first teen heartbreak. Nothing ever felt that bad again! Your brain 'prepared' you for future hurts, and you learned coping methods. The body does the same…and the human body never ceases to amaze me!

    Like most things in this wonderous universe of ours, balance key to better outcomes. Too much stress (hormetic or otherwise) isn't a desired state….mind or body. To little…well I imagine life would be pretty dull and physical/emotional strength lowers. Balance…gotta' love it. Fact is, we all fast….every day, when we sleep, hence the term 'break-fast'. That's all the fasting a clean eating & active person really needs.

    What does this all mean for us….specifically women (no cavemen joined yet, so we'll roll with the feminine slant). Fasting, or even cutting calories has been shown in female rats to increase cognitive function and increase energy. Not so much in human studies. One study showed females that continually use intermittent fasting to have worsened glucose tolerance levels (can you feel the belly fat happenin'?) Better news came with another study that showed alternate day fasting to improve HDL and stabilize female triglyceride levels. No doubt that many studies show both men and women to drop body fat, lower blood pressure, enjoy better total cholesterol and triglycerides with a fasting regime. Note though, these studies were done on post-menopausal & obese women (and men), not lean folks. The other unfortunate fact is that the fasting group lost the same amount of weight as those restricting calories ('Fasting Lite') BUT (always the but), the fasting folks lost more body mass (lean muscle mass), not body fat…..this is not the type of weight you want to lose. Working out fasted? For men only, women show better results when fed properly before and after workouts. Pre or Peri menopausal? You'll get poor results, especially if you're lean to begin with.

    The Paleo/primal take:

    Intermittent fasting shouldn't be done unless there is good reason. If you need to lose a significant amount of weight for various health reasons, are suffering neurological disorders or suffering terrible SEs during chemo treatments, then you're a perfect candidate. The average lady who's eaten far too much the day before doesn't have to resort to fasting as a way of countering yesterday's food. A chronic cycle of fasting leads to some pretty bad eating habits (oh I can have this cake if I starve myself tomorrow….you're living off cake for the next 24 hours…doesn't make good sense). Along with skewed glucose tolerance. If you've overindulged, eat better the next day, and the day after that, and so on. Look at the big picture and not the 10 minutes you spent with the offending cake.

    Intermittent fasting short term can be helpful for the paleo lady if she has significant weight to lose, or trying to break a weight plateau (same can happen with a re-carb though). My personal experience has been that the weight drops, but often returns a day or two later….it works for some, never for me. If I'm not hungry (often these days) I don't eat…that's my fast.

    If you do choose to Intermittent fast, be aware and cautious of these signs (that will become quickly obvious):

    • Weight Gain (especially in the midsection)
    • Insomnia
    • Muscle Loss or Reduced Performance In the Gym—It's reasonable to suffer in the gym on fasting days, but watch out for persistent strength losses. If your fitness and strength levels are tanking, fasting may not work for you.
    • Loss Of Your Period—Skip meals, not menstrual cycles.
    • Excessive Hunger— You shouldn't be ravenous. Thoughts of food shouldn't park themselves in your front yard!

    Ok cave kids, it's simplistic, but it's out there.

    Egads, first crickets and now cats??? I LOVE CATS! Please stop. Kittens are weeping 😢.

    One of 7, my diet is a bit like yours. I do think carbs hoard fat. I have lost 12 lbs in the past couple of months by cutting carbs in half, adding masses of veg and changing some daily habits e.g. happy hour has gone from a glass of wine and a salty snack to a cranberry soda water and cut up apple. Sounds boring but still feel like a treat and is a hunger chaser.

    I also added more exercise, aiming for daily.

    My thoughts on intermittent fasting. There is a moderate approach that works and has been shown to prevent breast cancer. The goal is to go 13-14 hours without eating. Not in the daytime lol but overnight e.g 7:00 pm to 8:00 a.m. or just have breakfast later.This stopped my evening snack habit which also helped the weight fall off. No more muffin top.

    One last point - I haven't been on any kind of diet for years. It may be harder to lose weight if you have been a yo-yo dieter. Throws off your metabolism. Perhaps that is where Paleo or Keto works especially well.

    Hey! I wasn't the one eating them.....*points a finger at SpecialK* (jk'in) I only recommended a side dish and wine pairing LOLOL!!

    Agreed DearLife, we'll lay off the cats. I know that not one of us would harm a hair on a cat. Actually, there was one cat that didn't scare me....a neighbor's Manx cat named Scooter. He was such a wonderful & dear little thing. I won't say how he met his end, but it broke my heart when it did. Miss the little guy to this day.

    Your moderate IF approach is a good one, but still runs the risk of chronic stressors (albeit in a paleo world). If it's working for you, you're not ravenous, and not noticing any of the 'warning signs' I listed, then that's a very cool thing. It's such a personal choice, and one that has to be gauged by individual results and feelings. I have to stress (no pun), anyone doing this to keep that list handy.

    Egads - that pizza was soooo terrible! I wanted my chicken crust one so bad, other than that I felt fine pizza wise - no bloat, no guilt, nothing. You know I could dehydrate Hoovers left overs and ship them to you, think of the possibilities! Frog muffins, bird soup, mice cakes.....

    Yo-yo dieting could definitely be my problem, that and being sick all the time so I can't exercise. Know what sucks? I went a year without a cold and now I have had two within a month or so of each other!

    I am currently spending my day "resting" and typing up the recipes that sound good from that book! I am trying one tonight, if it's a thumbs up I will post it tomorrow!

    My experience with IF—I was having a follow-up with my MO two years ago and ended the visit with general health questions (“What supplements do *you* take?) She was IF’ing, and not for weight loss reasons. I decided to start—it was pretty easy for me to skip breakfast. I kept it up until my recent dx and intend to go back when I’m done with this crap. Vampeyes I was not super rigid—drank my usual tea/coffee with milk/cream. I read years ago that you can tell by the length of our intestines that we were meant to have large, infrequent meals, like big cats

    Hi 👋🏻 I usually fast anywhere between 12-14 daily. It’s not purposeful. I don’t like to go to sleep with a full stomach and it takes a little time in the morning to get myself breakfast. With it being summer now, that means my house is full boys “needing” their mom. 😉

    FWIW- I’m so not a cat person! My Frenchie is my little girl-

    Ingerp - back in the day I did the 5:2 fast for a few weeks, 2 days/wk, 24 hrs no food just water. I’ve never been so miserable. I used to go to bed at 730 pm to stave off my screaming belly. I’d wake up 2 lbs lighter and it’d be back on the day after that. Never worked for me. Made me as pleasant as a bag of nails. :))) (nothing much has changed eh?)

    Vamp - yes water is allowed (essential) and I was like ingerp, nothing stops my morning java! Hoover is a beautiful cat! Looks like he’s a character, too cute! Gorgeous pic

    Warrior (paleo unicorn) - Your little girl is so sweet! I so miss having a dog! I used to call my dog my lil’ girl...even typing about her now gets a lump in my throat....They reach in and take your heart. Geeze *sniff*...have to get a hold of myself now. :)

    Our last kitty died a few years ago. She appeared on our doorstep one snowy day, skinny and crying. We had to feed her on the porch because she was too scared to come into the house.After six months, she was sitting on our lap watching TV.

    We don't have a cat right now but here is a pic I took of a BIG CAT on our safari to Tanzania.

    Lions eat every two-three days but that is too hard for me! Ingerp, interesting about our long intestines.

    I find an overnight fast easy and can't say I have sfx. I do have a cup of coffee when I get up. Otherwise, I would growl and roar!

    OK now there's something to negotiate. Here's my trade offer. We'll take Shatner and Bieber, and you can have Clooney, Dierks, Brad Pitt and whoever else you want if you'll take Trump and we get Trudeau. Well, hands off George Strait, but anyone else.

    I have done intermittent fasting even before I read the 13 hour study, and I do longer fasts sometimes after reading Dr. Longo's research. It is supposed to help clean out defective cells (longer fasts). I wouldn't say it helps me lose weight, but it is apparently good to give your body a break from constant eating. Its actually quite easy to do the 13 hour fast and I find when I ate breakfast, it just made me hungrier. So now I take my breakfast with me and eat it around 10:30 or 10:45, so I'm always doing 14 hours or more of overnight fast.

    For sure my triglycerides decrease, fasting blood sugar decreased and my HDL went up. My total cholesterol also increased, but not too bad and that is also a side effect of the AIs. Because there are several things I do differently, IF, Paleo diet, lots of exercise, more vitamin D, more sun exposure I don't know which is exactly responsible for what piece of that improvement so I'll just keep doing it all.
