Can we have a forum for "older" people with bc?

Jackie, you're doing slightly better in the weight loss category than I am and you aren't paying ww! Good for you.
Today is a sunny nice day. I'm looking forward to late afternoon when the weekenders depart. Or they usually are all gone by Sunday evening. It's not that they aren't nice people. I just enjoy the resort when there aren't so many people around. Six people other than ourselves are here during the week. The two condos are occupied by two men renters, one retired and the other still working. There are two other couples in large 5th wheels.
DH is busy today with a couple of small "jobs." I did a little weeding in the playground. The weeds sprout up through the fine gravel. I'll do more tomorrow and eventually complete the chore.
Hope everyone is having a nice Sunday.

Good day today this Monday. Likely to maybe have a storm ( thunderstorm Saturday ) but sounds like it might be early evening. Guess I won't wash my car after all. It needs it but did get some dirt removal from the storm on Saturday. All my animal sitting duties are done for now. No more until the 22nd. to 25th. Not a long time so it will all go fine. Dh is working again, and we are hoping with minor adjustments that we can keep it down to way shorter hours. A person has been hired, but I have to say some of these people don't always work out so well so I'll be holding my breath for awhile. Dh is 79 and I feel we are coming to a time when he should be looking at keeping up at home more than keeping up at work.
Elsewise I'm glad to be back here and working again to catch up on things. I do tend to get into things Dh would do more with if we can just get these 'work' hours adjusted correctly. Well, the two wk. retirement was great while it lasted.
Carole, I always do much better in the wt. loss dept. when it is hot ( especially if it is humid at the same time ) as it tends to kill my appetite and so I eat great food but way less of it. Like my steel-cut oatmeal. I so love its real nutty flavor, but I cannot stick to the amt. listed on the pkg. Who can eat just half a cup of steel-cut oatmeal. I don't think I've ever eaten that little tid-bit. The thing is -- if the weather is bad ( hot & humid ) I eat more oatmeal in the morning before the weather catches up with me. The rest of the day I feel full -- so full that I might only have half a salad for supper. That is what gives me a lg. ability to shed wt. in summer. Hate to admit, I can be over-pudgy through the winter as summer reverses itself so it seems my wt. does too. Sigh !!! Sometimes we aren't very complicated are we. That is my chuckle for the day.
Have a great day everyone.

Jackie, a high carb food like oatmeal doesn't keep me satisfied for long. I do better with protein and a small amount of fat. So my two breakfast standby's are an egg omelet with some grated cheese or toast with peanut butter and banana. I also drink half a carton of a chocolate protein shake as a substitute for juice. On the current WW program, eggs are a "free" food. I keep boiled eggs in the refrigerator and often eat one with some light mayo as a snack when hunger strikes.
I'm borderline diabetic. I don't know if that's the reason that I get ravenous when my stomach is empty. If I don't eat something, I feel like I could pass out. It's better to have something healthy on hand to eat like berries and fruit. And the boiled eggs. Right now I have blueberries, strawberries and fresh pineapple in the refrigerator. Also bananas on the counter.
So we're having a drippy, rainy day. I went off to the gym this morning by myself. DH didn't want to leave in case the Direct TV people came and needed to consult him. There's something going on with the resort tv connection. We have our own with a different company.
I'm in the camper with the tv tuned to a news channel covering the Korean "summit" in Singapore.
Later we'll drive about 45 min. to the town of Bemidji for a WW meeting. Then we'll have dinner at a really good pizza restaurant where we've eaten a couple of times in the past. I'm looking forward to delicious thin-crust pizza. We'll probably each order our own individual pizza since we like different toppings.
Happy Monday.

I think the tendency to put on weight in the winter and lose in the summer is a part of our ancient DNA. In the caves this made perfect sense.
Oatmeal sticks to me in the morning as long as it's steel cut oats. Lots of the time DH adds quinoa and flax seeds which raise the protein quite a bit. Thin crust pizza sounds so good! We had some in Hood River that was really good and a radicchio salad.

Storms last night and maybe a couple more today. We are getting plenty of moisture. Not sure I'm fond, but at least we have some very moderate sun this a.m. It likely won't last, but at least it is not grey which is almost never to my liking. Good thing is I don't have to water any plantings so that is really good. It is fairly comfy outside for temps. right now. That will dissipate after all the rain has passed. In fact, if we don't get the storms it will start later today.
Got lots to occupy me for the next couple of days. I'm still playing catch-up from my work week this past week. I can only keep those things most pressing done when I'm working elsewhere, but it doesn't take too long to catch up which is good for me.
Hope things are moving in a good direction for you Anne. Hope your weather is staying mild Carole. Thinking back to my childhood days when even having a window fan was the cat's meow and we didn't have one at our house. We use to take the mattresses off our beds ( my sister and I ) and carry them to the living room and put them on the floor in front of the screen door. It was something we considered fun. I actually don't remember that it was cooler though it may have been. Thinking the other day in the heat how as a youngster growing up --- I was not affected by heat I don't think. I ran everywhere and when I wasn't running, rode a bike. I don't recall sweating as I grew up. Things have changed very much.
Hope you all have a wonderful day.

I look at my grandsons who live in Hood River and marvel that cold doesn't seem to affect them. I'll be bundled up and freezing and they're comfortable in long sleeve T-shirts. Perhaps I was the same. I remember Mom insisting I put on a sweater I didn't feel I needed. Really hot afternoons in Okla, we would play jacks on my north-facing front porch that had really smooth concrete. It was about as cool as you could be outside.

Hi all!
Carole, I can certainly understand enjoying the weeks with less people more than the weekends. It’s hard to concentrate on the peace and serenity of nature, when people are running around.
I have reached 28lbs lost since January. It’s somewhat harder without my brother, but I am cooking every night for my son, who is here for the camp. He does not get much home cooking unless he is the one cooking, and it’s hard to cook for only yourself. Yesterday was the first day of camp, and they had over 300 kids. My daughter refuses to send her son and one of the reasons, she says, is because my son doesn’t like her kids. This is a man who has been working with “problem” children for twenty years now. He is also one of the most patient men I have ever known, and he is very committed to having relationships with each of his nieces and nephews. My daughter was here from Fri nite to Sun afternoon, and my son was great with the kids, especially Kayden. They watched a movie together Sat night, and spent hours together deleting my music from an old iPad, teaching Kayden how to do it himself. Then he texted Kayden’s mom the free site he can download from. He also told her hat if she wants either of her children to go to camp, or just stay with me for a week, he would be happy to drive the two hours each way, both to get them and drive them home. Rob has been very open with his sister about how the life she and her husband have decided to live is not what the kids deserve, and is detrimental to their wellbeing, but he would never let those feelings interfere in how he treats her kids.
She was “okay” with me over the weekend, but we did not talk about anything meaningful. I get the feeling she is not happy with my relationship with Kayden. He asked me if I had any extra kindles - he has discovered the joy if readind, and while looking for a kindle, we found an old iPad and iPod. He asked if he could have them and I said okay- they were just sitting in a cabinet. His mom was not happy. She claimed the iPad for herself, but let him keep the kindle and iPod. My heart breaks for him and the way he is treated.
Time to head to the mall to do some walking! So more later.

Good morning. Anne, I so wish your daughter would have a change of heart, but it seems doubtful. I'm likely wrong ( I don't read situations very well ) but your daughter seems a bit jealous of her brother's 'success' with youngsters and seems bound to move in the opposite direction. That is a total shame. Here is someone who might make a major difference in Kayden's life, no matter what his mother's lifestyle happens to be, and she is too proud/obstinate and insistent on proving she is in charge and doesn't need input from others. One can always hope though.
We are warm today here --- not as much as yesterday, but the humidity makes it feel like it might as well be. We had two or three rains yesterday and could get more today but not as much. Strange weather but it seems we have had that for a number of yrs. now. I'm already concerned that we will end up with high temps starting in mid June that don't waver much until summer is ready to turn to Fall. Not liking the thought and sure hope I am wrong.
Moving on with projects. Need a new front door mechanism that we are going to have to go quite a distance to find. About 75 or so miles west toward St. Louis, Mo. There is a big shopping area ( Fairview Heights ) that is not too far from the Mississippi Bridge that takes you into Missouri and that is where we will have to go. It is an Anderson door and they are not much like regular doors -- or at least not when this door was put in. Also, it is actually considered a patio door which may make a difference too. So, we will toss that in for good measure.
Anyway, I will get done what I can. My cousin is coming over this evening. I didn't want her to pay me for staying with my little pal, but she is going to insist I think. Have to admit they would have to pay to keep him in the kennel, but I feel like they are very good to us and I'd like to 'return' favors now and then.
Anyway, hoping you are all going to have a really good day.

Good morning on this beauty of a sunny morning. A bit hotter today but less humidity. We are trading conditions. I sweated just as much doing my morning chores no matter what -- but its okay.
Going today to look for the Anderson door mechanism that we need. It appears to be a whole long piece that butts up to the entire length of the door and is held in place by a lot of screws. Henceforth I'm pretty sure I'll never replace the whole door with Andersen. I do like the door since its a double one, but unless you have someone familiar with them, they are something of a pain. We did have our carpenter put in our kitchen door and screen door. It took a lot longer than I thought it would. I guess it isn't like it seemed in the old days when things seemed to have gone faster. Maybe in my youth I wasn't concerned with time -- say like you may be when you are now paying someone to do what you can't.
Thank goodness we have good a/c's in cars for long rides. That will be okay. Dh starting his day off having to go down to the store -- saying how short a time he will be there. Hmmm, hope he is right. I'd like to get this little trip done and get back home to what I need to be doing.
Catch you all later. Hope you are going to have a fantastic day.
-
I did some physical labor this am. I pruned some shrubs that were looking gangly. Then I did some mowing with a push mower. Dh mows with the new zero radius riding mower and I took care of a few sites and areas that don't accommodate the big mower.
I was finished by 11 am. DH had departed to play men's golf. My neighbors are all gone, doing something. So I transported chair, fishing pole, live bait, and bag of fishing paraphernalia to the fishing dock. It was so blustery that I had to grab my visor to keep it from being blown away. So I gave up on fishing.
Hope you're able to get the door "part" that you need, Jackie.
Happy Thursday to all.

Wow -- all the way almost to Missouri. Had a big detour ( not sure but think general highway repairs ) out into a very countrified area. Finally had to ask some farmers in a field. They gave great directions but what a convoluted, every direction under the sun twice at least, set of directions. We didn't have to back-track though, but doubt we would have done very well had we not checked with the farmers.
Had to order the part and pick it up in two or three wks. when it gets back to the lumberyard. They have a $75.00 delivery fee -- for something weighing a pound. Can't figure why they couldn't give the manufacturer our address and route it that way but NOPE. No way we were going to pay $75.00. That buys me four or five tanks of gas. Well, at least you can still get the part. The door itself is perfect -- it's the closing/locking mechanism that just refuses to work any longer. So, after a few gnashes of my teeth we got back in the car -- and took another route home. It was way shorter, even if you don't figure in detour. I thin we will use that route when we go back to pick up the piece.
It's not bad outside though the a/c is running here. We take all day usually to get to the final temp. number. So, early evening the air runs a bit more. When the sun shifts just a bit, it will settle out and we should be comfy the rest of the evening.
Otherwise an all right day. Bummer that you didn't get to fish since it sounded like you would have the dock to yourself Carole.
-
We had a thunderstorm with hail at 3:30 this morning. DH and I both were rudely awakened by the sound of hard objects hitting the camper roof over our heads. Lots of flashing lightning and thunder. My flowers in pots on the deck look very dejected this morning.
What a driving adventure you had yesterday, Jackie. The good news is that the part is still available. I agree that the store should have been able to send the part directly to you.
Not much on my schedule today. I may take the fishing pole down to the dock this morning.
Happy Friday to all.

Wow !! Not starting out the day good. I managed to twist my back the wrong way and guess I will have to go see about it. It may be a long drive to Marion but the satellite office here has no X-ray and they seem to insist on an X-ray for everything. Well, we will do okay if a little un-straight forward. So onward and upward. Shouldn't be a bad day -- but I think we could have some storms. We didn't get anything last night though it tried to drop some this a.m. So, one of those not sure what will happen days. There is some murkiness in the sky but the sun is out for now. I think it depends on what passes by.
Dh is off today and that is a good thing. Holding my breath that they may have to call him into work. He has already heard from his manager, but nothing definite. So, we will see.
Hope you are all going to have a nice day and good fishing.
-
Hope you haven't injured your back badly, Jackie.
-
Got to go to the satellite ofc. in Mt. Vernon -- close enough to me to tolerate the ride there. The Dr. gave me a Medrol Pac so hoping I get through that ok. I hope it does the trick. I had this once before a few yrs. back and had forgotten how 'quickly' the issue comes up. In fact, the first time I had twinges for a couple of days but didn't perceive it was going to lead into a major issue. Today it was nothing while I was bending over but the minute I tried to stand up -- kaboom. So, I did something that ( maybe a nerve ) set me up and so I'll have to be very careful for a bit and do what the Dr. says. Bout time for another ice pack session.
See you all tomorrow.
-
Jackie, feel better and take it easy--no real exercise, just keep moving enough to unkink your back. Medrol works great. Ice is better the first day, moist heat (redundant considering the weather) afterward. I've found that Bio-freeze (menthol) followed by lidocaine roll-on or spray also works much faster than even prescription diclofenac or Lidoderm patches. Arnica gel is also soothing.

Good morning and thanks Sandy for all the tips you may not get from the Doc's office -- though I'm glad I got there and got help. I did start out with a re-arranged dosage for yesterday since it was late on the first day of getting a prescription. Don't know how much that helped ---- but you were/are right. Upon first getting up this morning I didn't feel like too much had changed. Well, just like you mentioned, after moving around ( carefully ) a bit I actually do feel as though the relief is most definitely in sight. So, if careful I think it will come out of it okay. Sort of surprised but some of the 'good' feeling is likely because of how the dosage got arranged so I could start "late" on medication. Not going to do more than I have to today -- and that will happen far slower. Hoping too to avoid se's as well -- so more nibbling than I might otherwise do. Going to do ice today since yesterday was a shortened day -- but likely stop thereafter. I really don't like having to do it anyhow so good to know that not keeping up a steady schedule will likely be okay.
No rain -- so more heat and humidity than we like but likely some rain will show at some point soon.
-
Cloudy and pretty cool this morning although the forecast is for sunny and 77. I just hope it doesn't rain because it's the Fremont Solstice Parade and festival. It's the only place I know of where you can buy a lot of tie dye. Still in the 70's there. DH is in a samba band that is in the parade. And of course, this is where the naked bicyclists parade ahead of the official parade. Most are painted and many are not completely naked, but some are. One day I was standing behind a little boy with his grandparents. Many naked painted bicyclists went by. Finally at the end was an unpainted, unattractive guy cycling by. The little boy said, Grandpa, that man was completely necked! I loved it because he didn't think any of the painted ones were.
-
Wren, I miss Fremont--glad it's still sorta stuck in the '70s, just like I remember it.
-
Wren, I hope your dh and the naked bicyclists are staying dry today. They would get wet here. We've had a lot of rain this morning. A real bummer for the weekend folks.
We went into town to the gym, then came home and had our separate breakfasts. We each make our own since we usually don't want the same food.
I've been watching US Open golf the rest of the day. I'm taking a break since I caught up to present time on the recording and couldn't zap through the numerous commercials.
We're signed up for Couples golf tomorrow at 12 pm, but the weather forecast doesn't look good. More rain expected.
Jackie, keep taking care of that back.
-
The sun came out and it's now 71 F. Very nice with a breeze.

Scorcher today--79 when I left Chi. and 95 when I arrived in Lafayette. 2 hrs later it was still >90. Got a combination heat-exhaustion/intermittent-mitral-valve-prolapse attack as soon as the show was over and the performance adrenaline wore off. Too queasy to try any of the food booths at the Taste of Lafayette. Had to have friends help get my stuff to my car, where I drank my fifth bottle of water and cranked up the A/C full-blast. I'm okay now, but my L hand is the worse for wear. It hadn't fully recovered from last week--not just my wrist but now also the &*(@#$% bone spurs in my thumb--so we had to redo our set list on the fly because I had trouble on the higher frets of not just guitar bua also dulcimer. I iced it when I got home (and at dinner halfway home, while waiting for my food I used my glass of iced tea as an impromptu ice pack). Wed.'s cortisone shot will be not a moment too soon!

Oh Sandy, I'm so sorry to hear of your issues. The heat is awful and then to have the wrist/hand/w/bone spurs too. Glad for what you were able to accomplish, but I'm sure hoping like you, for really good relief on Wednesday. Hurdles are meant to make you stronger, a bit more resilient perhaps, but sometimes these thoughts wear thin. You'd like to think some things are helping you be better, but sometimes it just seems like your being picked on almost. So, I'm sending positive thoughts of hope for great results and that attitudes will perk up along with solidly good results.
