What are you doing for fun??

Addendum to previous post: Quite windy indeed! I looked out of my bedroom window, to my patio and discovered that my table umbrella (which had been open) had been carried over the patio fence and landed in an oleander bush. Happily it was no worse for it's short flight but I decided to store it in the garage until spring. With a wet winter in the forecast, it seems like a good decision.

One of the major benefits of moving often is get tiding rid of stuff! Having to pack and move unnecessary "stuff" is a great motivator. I, too, am storing lots of stuff my adult kids collected when they were young. Hoping that one day they have room to store their own stuff. My sister was visiting recently and I was able to pass on a lot of my scrapbooking supplies to her. I have one ongoing project and kept enough to finish it .... Then I am done! Now, if I could only part with all my fabric scraps ... Not an easy task for a quilter! lol
-
GatorGal - I keep seeing quilts for causes...maybe do some quilting for one of them?

I say this when I can't even sew a button on properly.

My basement is full of items that my children left here when they transitioned from college to their more independent lives. They are all married now, and I know that they will never reclaim those previously cherished belongings. I think there is even a trunk full of English papers from one of my sons. WHY??? I have to throw all those things away, but every time I see them, I lose my interest in cleaning out. I should have all my sons come here some Saturday to help get rid of everything once and for all. That is easier said than done, of course, since they don't all live close by and they are busy with their families. Look at me making excuses for them. Hahaha!
GatorGal, I would love to see pictures of some of your quilts. I am a very bad quilt maker, but I appreciate the beauty of others' quilting. I have made a quilt for each of my grandchildren to give them when they were born. I just finished one for my granddaughter who his due at the end of December. There have been lots of things going on in my life lately, so I made a very, very simple one this time. I was afraid I wouldn't have time to finish anything too elaborate.
-
I don't quilt, but the art form is absolutely beautiful and I love to see all the different designs...would love to see yours, Gatorgal.

My grandmother made quilts out of necessity. My mom used to make all our clothes when we were young (again, out of necessity), I remember she would send my grandmother all her scraps. We loved visiting "mamaw" and seeing pieces of our dresses in her quilts. Mamaw made each of her grandchildren a quilt. Mine was my security blanket, especially when I went to college. It is stored safely in my cedar chest, not in the best shape after years of use and washings, but brings me close to my grandmother every time I take it out to look at it. I have made baby quilts for all my nieces and nephew, as well as my children and grandchildren. I also made a full size quilt for my mom. My quilts were always given with the instruction that they be used! I wanted them to become "blankies." They are not works of art, but works of love. I always say this is my last one, but joyfully do have to make one more. My daughter is having her first and only in January. I will try to find some pictures to post. I love the idea of making them for charity. If I only had more motivation

These are the quilts I did for my granddaughters. They are the most recent so I was able to find them in my picture file.
-
50s girl ... Would love to see pics of yours
-
GatorGal, Those quilts are beautiful. Thank you for posting the pictures. I am sure your granddaughters will cherish them as they grow older. I will have to find some pictures of mine, but they pale in comparison. I use very simple patterns.
-
Those are stunning, Gatorgal! thanks for sharing!
-
Ha ha, sorry Gatorgal, but your quilts ARE works of art. Simply beautiful! I'm quite jealous of your talent. I understand what you mean, tho, about them being works of love. Very meaningful. And such good advice, telling recipients the quilts are to be used
-
The quilts are very beautiful, and I too am jealous, given that I have no artistic talent. Thank goodness for folks like you!
-
thanks for all your positive comments. The pinwheel quilt was made with fabrics I found from the dick and Jane reading books. At the time I was teaching middle school reading so loved putting that one together for my granddaughter. I'm looking forward to planning the next one. The baby will be named Delilah Raven and her nursery will be done in shades of purple and violet for the Baltimore Ravens. I guess I'll be buying new fabrics because in all my boxes there are no purples. Fun time at the fabric store!!
-
GatorGal it was all good till you mentioned the Ravens......lol, just kidding! Steelers fan here. Have fun shopping for purple fabric
-
Gatorgal, those are stunning!!!!!!!!!!!!! And more news from me. Still enjoying selling stuff.. Made friends at the post office.. What's more, now I 'm officially financially helping 2 kids' school expenses with the bits of what I earn. Feels so fullfilling
))))

Good on you Erbu! Nice to see your smiling post!
-
good to see you, Ebru. I laughed when you said you were making friends at the post office, I'm too lay for that. I print my labels at home and arrange carrier pick up. Love selling stuff on eBay though I find I go in spurts. Taking a break now for thanksgiving and a little travel to be with family in Florida. Leaving right after chemo this afternoon, enjoy the holiday, all those who celebrate it!

I've gone thru many phases since dealing with bc and that means my idea of fun transitions from one thing to something else and then something else after that. I learn to go with how it makes me feel and I will do a casual assessment from time to time to make sure I like what I'm doing or if I'm taking on too much or if what I'm doing is no longer working.
This fall, as the weather turned cooler and the light of day got shorter, I turned my attention from the flower garden in the backyard to getting my house ready for the holidays. My house stays tidy as we are empty nesters, but I'm not a clean freak. Still, I spent hours removing the wax from the kitchen floor then adding a thin layer of wax and it looks brand new. It was actually fun, although I overdid it physically and it took me two weeks, seriously, to stop aching from all the extra exertion.
I also found a couple wooden chairs from a Goodwill type place for ten dollars total, gave them a couple coats of cranberry colored paint and they look terrific, also painted a couple old kitchen table chairs white and painted a rather rough looking oval shaped coffee table we salvaged from my mother in law's garage when we moved her. It's fun for me to see the transformation a couple simple coats of paint make. I'm having about 15 people in for Thanksgiving dinner and the chairs will add some nice extra seating.

Ms. M, they look fantastic! Beautiful job.

Yesterday's ultrasound, for pregnant dd, and celebratory luncheon were wonderful. My daughter's MIL and I were a bit overexcited in the ob's office, but grandmother hood is by nature exciting (this is her first grandchild). I can't reveal the gender yet, as they have only told close family, but let's just say I will have balance in my life! And we did do a bit of gender specific shopping after lunch .
-
How thrilling to be at the ultrasound, Caryn. I am glad you enjoyed the luncheon and shopping. All three experiences sound like so much fun. I can "guess" the gender. When will the parents tell everyone else the news? I was never at the gender-reveal for any of my grandchildren. Four of my grandchildren were "gender surprises" at birth since both sets of parents decided that they didn't want to know ahead of time. I was in the birthing room for the arrival of my first grandchild. Tears were running down my cheeks when he was born. I must admit that I wouldn't have wanted my mother-in-law in the room when my kids were born.
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.

Whoo hoo Caryn! How fun!

Our Thanksgiving went well, a lot of work but worth the effort. As you can understand, I am appreciative of being able to host the gathering. We will host a much more casual Christmas Eve get together. One of my sister's has done it for 30 years and doesn't care to continue. My Thanksgiving decor is easily swapped out for some bows and lighted garland and I'll have simple serve yourself food like chili and rigatoni. I really enjoy creating the cozy atmosphere for everyone to enjoy.
-
Lovely! Thanks for sharing
-
This was my kitchen ready for Thanksgiving feast. I made the centerpieces on the table and island and the one in the left corner of the kitchen cabinets with lights in it. All very super simple and inexpensive made with things I already had. For the island one, on the spur of the moment, I turned over a big red plastic bowl and set the arrangement on top to give some height and added interest and it was very effective. Dh said that was very Martha Stewartish of me. Lol. We set up a table in the adjoining room for extra seating.
-
Kiwi, not sure what happened, but when I posted my Thanksgiving photos, somehow the previous post with my family room was deleted! I mentioned that we were hosting a very casual Christmas Eve gathering this year since one of my sisters, who did it for 30 years isn't interesting in having it anymore. I enjoy creating a cozy, festive atmosphere for guests to relax and have a nice time.
-
Devine, Thank you for posting the pictures. Your home looked cute quite festive for Thanksgiving. I love the holidays. The time spent with family and friends creates lasting memories for all. I still remember things from my childhood celebrations. Of course, I can't be sure what was real and what has been altered in my memory banks, but it is all good. The warmth of family, the smells and tastes of traditional holiday foods, and the general excitement of the days lives within me forever.
