Lisa, it was so funny watching those cranes among their flowers. There are about 5 of them on a golf course that is very noisy as it is arranged around a small airport with Warbirds and Learjets. They are very laid back. If they are in the way of a golf cart they just trot briskly out of the way. They are so used to people. Occasionally they will make these cackling, clicking sounds and go off for a fly by.

Nancy, my 300mm is heavy, and my tripod is big so I only use it at home or for a car trip, so mostly I either rest it against something or on a wall or similar, or if its sunny I use a very high shutter speed so a little wobble doesn't matter. The Tamron zoom is great as it focuses internally which means that you can rest against the side of a tree for example and get it all positioned then focus as the outside does not move as its focusing.

    Back to the cold soon

I was so excited this morning. Woke up to find my preening shot trending as high as #4 on National Geographic Yourshot. It will be sure to plumit during the day but it was a great surprise. I am very thankful to that bird!!

Thank you ladies.I was thrilled. Its funny on NatGeo. The organizers generally have different ideas of what they like to the posters. They often like obscure dark photos of out of the way places while the posters like pretty pictures and nature.Sometimes you may like a photo but nobody else does. Then there are some that I dont like that much but others do.This one I did not originally post here as I did not think much of it but some seemed to quite like it.

Lizzysmom, I just found your famous shot on NG. I got to see all of your pics too. I love the one you posted here. There was another I wanted to mention and then I clicked the wrong thing and after seeing all of your beautiful shots I exited the whole site by accident before I could go back and look at this one again. It was an egret shot.  I am not on FB to like your pic unfortunately. I don't know if I ever mentioned looking into Your Shot several weeks ago. I am interested in still doing that but will wait until I feel ready. I saw your green sax. Cool!

Nancy, thank you for taking a look. It is fun once you get started and there are some amazing photos from all over the world on there Its a very positive and unifying experience as there are so many different cultures, nationalities, religions, races all sharing the same love of photography. (from the weird to the wonderful). Only problem is that its easy to spend far to much time just browsing on there!!

A search on people Lynda A. will find me on Yourshot.

I want to take another pic of the green sax (without me). It is so pretty and I wanted to take a lesson or two, just for the breathing, but could not find what I was looking for near home at the time. As you know so well mastering the breathing is the crucial thing!! My general breathing has never been particularly good.

Was it the little egret and the gold scenery? I have that somewhere here I think.I will try and dig it out as its quite old. There is also another recent flying one over water.

I had a gap of about 6 months when I stopped posting all summer but it was nice to start again.

I don't like Facebook. I joined as I had a friend in England that invited me but never log in. It just seems really intrusive. It kept wanting to transfer all the photos that I keep on my computer to the web and sending me messages about people I didn't know!

Lizzysmom, I don't remember which one it was. I will look again. I think it could be that I had the idea that I had to have a FB account to get on Your Shot. That may have been why I put it off. Regarding the sax, the basic embouchure (your mouth and muscles and teeth on mouthpiece) is really the most important thing in the beginning. That is the key to a good sound and of course the breathing but without the good embouchure the breathing won't matter. Tuck your bottom lip over your bottom teeth and top teeth resting on top of the mouthpiece. Okay you just had your first lesson. LOL I'll bill you laterWinking Going to find you again on NG.

Lizzysmom, I think the shot was the very one you just posted. I went back and looked again and this time I could see your pics in an easier format than the first time I looked. Not sure why that was.  I know it was towards the beginning and near the preening shot. There was another one that was a white egret with it's reflection. That one was next to the macro shot of the dragonfly's head but I do think it was the one you posted. Well enjoy your last days of vacation.

Teka, I would love to get a pic of an owl. In fact I have rarely seen an owl as those around here come out at night. My sister thinks there is one living near her house as she has seen one around her backyard. I am assuming a snow owl comes out during the day. Obviously in those pics it looks like daytime. Very cool.

Yes, snowy owls have been seen during the day in the North Country. Unlike most owls, which are nocturnal, snowy owls are diurnal—they hunt and are active both day and night.

I hear barred owls at night.

So far 20 inches of heavy snow.

Generator, red in the 1st photo, came in handy with no electricity from last evening until power returned this afternoon.

Birds will be glad for seed feeders. Husband not able to find suet in the grocery stores. Maybe a shortage!

    Our backyard.

Teka- yikes on all that snow! I am talking to friends today in northern Cali who have to stay home from work as they are getting 8 inches of rain in the bay area and everything is flooding.

Teka. Wow! It looks beautiful but not fun to deal with all of that snow and then no power. YIKES It does look like a winter wonderland.

Husband and I heard and saw several flocks of canadian geese flying overhead after the December 9th through 11th snow storm.

The following was taken from on-line.

Time for a hot apple cider toddy! ;o)

Lisa, I wonder what that bird is. I can't even venture a guess.

Teka, beautiful pic. We have Canada geese here all year round. They have a BIG family reunion in my backyard and adjacent empty field at least once a year. They are beautiful birds but really, really messy. They take over my birdbath and feeders and leave a huge mess.

Lisa, I am not sure what that bird is either. I will take a look in my Florida birdsbook in case there is anything simiilar there that prefers the warmer weather.

Teka, I love that pic. It almost makes me like snow!! Hot apple cider sounds good!

Hi bird friends- I just heard on the news our city got a nice grant to help improve the habitats here in NM for the birds, including our famous wintering sandhill cranes. Such good news!
