hi ladies. In Maui enjoying some relaxing time with hubby. More later -
Looks like we have dispersed to the tropics - back in Cancun for second trip this fall (hubby had extra vacation time). No pix- didn't bring the camera this time. Lots of weddings at this resort - so cute! -

for all the vacations and

for the cold and blowing wind, bringing leaves, leaves and more leaves.
70yrs ago my Canadian MIL had a day to remember!! She gave birth to my future DH. So on this Special Day all around I wish you all Love----kad2kar -
Morning Ladies,
It's cold this morning and going to get colder still tomorrow. I have one more day of blowing leaves and then I should be done for a few days. Yay!! I am so jealous of all the gals in the tropics right now!
Kad2kar ... Happy Birthday to DH! I hope you have something wonderful planned.
Hope all our Veterans have a special day today. We salute you.
hugs,
Bren -
Okay .. I'm a little upset this morning. The furnace just shut itself off. We're out of heating fuel. Had to see which credit card had enough credit to buy the fuel. Wish we didn't have to get 100 gallons at a time. The price did drop though by $20 from last year ... only $365 today. The only glitch is the delivery man can't get here until later this afternoon ... brrrrr.
I am so grateful my credit is good. This has been such a difficult year for us. I'm so happy that Thanksgiving is coming up ... my favorite holiday!
hugs to all,
Bren -
Remember the days when you could have started a bonfire with all those leaves? Warmth and revenge at the same time. -

Blue, thanks for posting "In Flanders Fields". For those who don't know the poem, it was written by a Canadian soldier, John McRae, after his safe return following World War I. Every Canadian school child learned it, and while it perhaps didn't mean all that much to us children then, it's a poem that truly resonates with all of us, especially today. It's why our symbol of remembrance is the poppy.
I have a great niece in the U.S. Air Force, a great-nephew in the U.S. Army, and a great-nephew in the Canadian Armed Forces. I truly hope we never, ever have to see them in harm's way in another devastating war.
For those of you who served, or were the children of those who did, THANK YOU! -
In election news - Republicans in Virginia changed the rules on provisional votes AFTER last Tuesday's elections. If you live or know someone who lives in Fairfax County, Virginia, please pass this along:
If you live in FAIRFAX COUNTY, Virginia:
If you voted with a provisional ballot, you have until 1:00pm Tuesday, November 12. 2013 -- a little more than 24 hours from now -- to appear IN PERSON before the Board of Elections. If you do not appear in person, your ballot WILL NOT BE COUNTED.
The Elections Board *is* open today, November 11, 2013, Veterans Day, from 10am to 4pm. It will be open tomorrow, Tuesday, from 11am to 1pm.
12000 Government Center Parkway -- Room 323
Fairfax, VA
When you enter the building, look for a table staffed by the Democratic party: They have an attorney present who will walk you through the procedures before you go upstairs.
The election for Attorney General is so very close, and the Republicans changed the vote-counting rules *after* the election. The last count was Obenshain, the Republican, up by 17 votes. Every vote DOES count.
Please SHARE THIS INFORMATION WIDELY. Thank you. -
Happy sunshine to our travelers. GG - maui, yummy, smell the plumeria for me. Remember it being called Frangiapani in India.
Bren, glad you could get fuel. We have100 gallon minimum delivery here too. Became too nerve wracking to keep eye on fuel level esp. during snowy weather, so now buy in advance, only use 500 gallons a year, that's for heat and hot water. Another thing I do NOT want to worry about all year. Over time, it seems to even out, some years price goes up during year, sometimes goes down. Like no watching price of oil, tho it's a big check to write in the summer, at least it's over with for a year. This whole experience with bc has taught me to make my life as easy for myself as I can. Age helps too
I'm a lot older than you are...
Heating with natural gas is so much less than oil. But the "fracking" is terrifying. Most here rely on wood stoves, I don't have one.
Supposed to get a "dusting" of snow tonight, very cold for a few days, then "normal." Happy almost Thanksgiving, yum, can smell the turkey. -
Hey Sunnyflowers!
I would have thought the price of heating fuel would be a bit lower as the gas prices in my area are under $3.00 a gallon. That's a great idea getting your fuel ahead of time. We just don't have the money to do that. I remember someone else on this thread used to buy their heating oil ahead of time too. Glad our water heater is electric. Wish the heat was too. The furnace is about 40 years old and it took me a few minutes to find the reset button. But we have heat now ... just in time for the 40% chance of snow tomorrow! Yay!
Blue ... the little puppy is so cute. It reminds of my MIL's little Maltese babies. They are so much fun and so lively to be around!
How is Ray doing? I imagine he is still grieving the loss of his mother. Give him a hug for me.
PiP ... it would take more than a bon fire to get rid of my leaves. We did some pricing on taking out the chestnut trees and trimming the huge oak, but it was a couple thousand dollars .. more than we had. Just waiting for the acorns to start falling on my head!
Tim was in the Army during the Viet Nam era. He was posted in DC and was in the Rifle Guard. He performed his duties at every one of the funerals for the soldiers who died. I'm sure you've all seen them before .. they do a synchronized thing with their rifles and then do a 21 gun salute.
I've been working all morning outside ... only 59 degrees, but I'm sweating like crazy from blowing and raking the damn leaves.
Hope everyone is having a good day so far.

Bren,
Sometimes Not so great to buy in advance, I paid $3.60 a gallon, now down to $3.40 BUT, one year I bought at about $2.50 and it went to $3.90 during winter. Just can't add the nervousness of keeping going into cellar ( entrance is on outside of cabin) thru the snow, to check on Fuel levels. So with automatic delivery, it's the fuel company's job to keep me warm
Gas is about $3.40 a gallon here, more a little south in CT. All strange to me - somebody is making Big $$$$$ on all this... -
Blue - that poem is wonderful.
I bought a poppy yesterday in remembrance of my grandfather who fought in WW1 and of a relative of Steve's who never came back. I realised I would not even exist if it were not for WW1. My grandfather was gassed several times and was hospitalised in England where he met my grandmother who was a nurse.

Not too cold here today despite a snow dusting ?? in the next couple of days. Pretty early for this part of the country so know it won't hang on, but definitely not ready for the oh so chilly temps. Worked all day yesterday on leaves and we are rapidly getting all the cleared area filled right back in but at least we have less layers to it all.
Poppies are sold here ( I didn't run into anyone this year ) but I always get a couple as does Dh.
Our fuel ( propane ) is running us just $70.00 per month this yr. Last yr. it was $95.00. We signed up for budget billing a long time ago. We get charged for 9 mos. and the last three months we are paid up and re-start over after that. It is the only way we could afford the fuel. We cook with it as well as heat and our hot water is on propane. Good thing there is we have a tankless water heater.....so no pilot light running 24/7. Every little bit counts.

Questions?
Isn't the sort of thing going on in Virginia more like a socialist or dictatorship type of 'election'?
Why I your heating fuel rationed?
Poppies are sold in Australia? And in some US cities? I did not know that. They are a big deal in Canada. We knew when my son's plane from Toronto was disembarking. Most of the passengers were wearing one. -
Saw this air this morning on the TODAY show. See Matt ( not my favorite ) jumped to political questions right away. Once an air-head, always an air-head. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/news/sarah-palin/

RL - weren't people forced into provisional ballots in VA for stupid reasons too? I may be wrong about that, but heard something about that election night.
My heating fuel cost $3.90 when I filled up last month. I use kerosene, so not sure what sort of oil you all are talking about. Still, at that price, $.07 lower than last year. Our automobile gasoline is usually the most expensive in the USA. Small town, end of the line, California gas taxes.
Ms Boo is still plugging along...at the least, defying the expectations of two of the three Vets I dealt with. Some days are good, some are bad. I usually set up a blanket on the lawn at the warmest part of the day (1-2pm 60 degrees) and she loves to come lay beside me or roll on her back on the grass. Today is a good day.
A good friend wrote me yesterday telling me her BC has returned (we met via our brca2 status and mutual friend). Another college friend of mine's husband is fighting AML, readying for a BMT next month. He is a professional athlete and was still teaching his sport when stricken. Very healthy man. All too young. I hate cancer and feel so much for those of us on this planet that have to deal with the consequences of it. -
That is one of the reasons SP frustrates me so much. She never answers the question. She just says what ever talking points she has rehearsed. And it comes out sounding ridiculous. -
Kam, most in New England use home heating oil. Some use propane, and there is more natural gas piped into some of the cities. But I would say heating with wood stove, and home heating oil are the main fuels. AND, it's a long, long winter. Beautiful in many places, including where I live, but LONG and cold. Also, I wear inside, what most people would wear outside on a coolish Fall day.
Prefer to keep me warm, in cooler indoor air, than having a stuffy feeling inside. And, I offer polertec jackets for any visitor who may be "chilly" -
Getting cold here! I'm actually looking forward to a cold snap. Goes with the season.
Kam, glad you and Ms Boo are having a good time. Chloe is plugging along also. She does tend to bump into things, but I know she can see because she follows me from room to room. I think when she's walking alone she just doesn't pay attention. My daily life revolves around getting down her various pills and treating her ear. We see the vet on Thursday. Sure hoping that ear infection is finally cleared up. One more dose tonight.
It's nauseating having to watch and listen to Palin's drivel all day. I can't understand why any reputable news company would interview that idiot. -

Even though I go to anti war protests, have since I was a kid, I go to Remembrance Day Ceremonies. I wear a poppy and I know that we have to do much better for our veterans. The WWI veterans are gone now, the WWII vets are aged (my father was in the RCAF, pilot my maternal Aunt was an army nurse, my FIL was also a pilot in the RCAF), the Korean War vets are aging, those who served in Kosovo are middle aged, the veterans from Afghanistan are still young and suffering, and our SIL just returned from a UN Peace Keeping post in Haiti. There were several thousand people at our small city's ceremony. The sky cried, the way it always does on Rememberance Day in Canada. At least in my experience it does. -
Oh Yorkie - I so relate to "my daily life revolves around getting down her various pills..." Me too! In fact, I need reinforcements as I haven't yet developed the art of giving a cat a pill - atleast this cat. My other cat is much easier. I thought I was going to outsmart the system and got a compounded liquid instead of one of the pills I give 2x day - she hates that even more! The other liquid is easy peasy. Anyway, back to the pills and arranging for twice daily help.
You know, the best we can do is make their last days as good as possible. I think I've gone through the 5 stages, or whatever they are. I know from her worst days, I will not allow her to suffer, so in a way, that brings me some solace. -
Kay,
I think it's important to keep reminding young people, children, who may not realize it, military service was not voluntary, in most places during all those earlier wars. Many did volunteer, but later, many were called up too.
Honestly don't know how I feel about voluntary military. Deep respect for police, National Guard ( home based duty), fire, but I guess it's my 1960's experience of having so many have to go to Viet Nam, still effects my thinking. Also how much I did not want the USA to go into Iraq.
Also remember when we called The Taliban, the mujahadeen, armed with USA weapons to fight the "Russians" in Afghanistan, then leaving it in ruins when the "Russians" were defeated, driven out. These sad, sad places which become battlegrounds for international political actions, almost said "games" but it's too serious. USA arming Saddam Hussein, so he could be a bulwark against the Shia in Iran ( after the Shah, supported by we know who, was dead) - can't imagine how history will report all this, without making it look aas stupid as in hindsight it seems.
Sorry about the rant...can't even watch "the news" letalong think of the Alaska woman....John McCain should be ashamed! -
Kam, I know what you mean about going through the stages. I may be at acceptance, but only because I have no choice. My Aromasin brain really struggles to keep on top of all the medicines, some of which change doses from a.m. to p.m., or are given only every other day. I have this complicated system (don't ask lol) to try and keep on top of that. Today the vet called me asking how the steroid was affecting her and I realized I had forgotten it this morning! Immediately gave it to her, but thank goodness the vet called. Only way I can get pills down her is by stuffing them into treats like cheese, chicken or salmon. Talk about spoiled! -
Believe me, dogs are so much easier than cats! They have this thing called Pill Pockets for cats. My cat wouldn't eat one of those if it didn't have a pill in it. If you got it by her once, you'd never get it by her again. Cats are programmed to not eat anything if it is at all suspect.
