Oh NativeMainer, colonoscopy has been on my mind as I'm wayyyyyyyyyyyy overdue. Going to try and push myself to schedule it soon. Kinda chickening out right now on the hip replacement so maybe do that instead.
-
Yeah, I've put it off for almost 5 years. Gonna have an upper endoscopy at the same time, and if they find anything I am going to absolutely go nuts. I canNOT go through the whole cancer thing again!
-
Dear Dear Ladies, PLEASE go for your colonoscopy! I first went at almost 51 years old. (had my best friend twist my arm to go). They found stage 1 colon cancer. Just in time that I didn't need any chemo or rads. Both of my doctors said that if I had waited, it could have been much worse. I've since been to 4 or 5 more scopes in the last 18 months. It really is not that big of a deal. At my last one, they didn't even find anything to biopsy, not even at the original site, and I'm off the hook for a year. Plus, I lost a couple bonus pounds.

It's Friday, NM. You get 3 points for checking in!
I am checking in, but yet to step on the scale. Heading to Santa Monica for my annual MRI and Mammo.
NM, I am proud of you for not crying. Last week at my Onc appointment I burst into tears. SHe said to not worry, about 75% of her patients do that.

Friday check in = 3 points
Weight down from last week = 2 points
Exercise = 15 points
Daily H2O = 7 points
Extra credit = 1 point – Enjoyed a WI sisters meet-up last weekend. It was just two of us plus her DH but we had a great time and plan to do it again next year. Their family owns a rambling old farmhouse on acres & acres of land, with beautiful scenery and lots of trails to walk and see by golf cart (did both). Sat for supper we had grilled salmon (that he caught) and fresh zucchini (that she grew). They sent me home with blueberries that had just been picked from bushes in their yard.

Do not try this at home! (story by Deidre Cox Baker of the Quad Cities Times)
The medical director of the Iowa Department of Public Health, or IDPH, sends out a news alert every week.
Dr. Patricia Quinlisk e-mailed the following news today, speaking of an Iowa woman who deliberately swallowed a type of worm in order to lose weight.
This tapeworm can live for years in a human's digestive tract, and grow up to something like 20 yards long. It also reproduces by itself.
Yikes! Can you spell "d-e-s-p-e-r-a-t-e m-e-a-s-u-r-e-s?"
Here is what Dr. Quinlisk had to say:
Recently an Iowa health care provider consulted with IDPH about a patient who had deliberately ingested a tapeworm (probably a scolex) that she had obtained via the internet.
Tapeworm infections are usually caused by ingesting food or water contaminated with tapeworm eggs or larvae, and is associated with weight loss. Despite the risks associated with tapeworms, patients can find suppliers of this tapeworm in order to as a weight lose strategy.
Ingesting tapeworms is extremely risky and can cause a wide range of undesirable side effects, including rare deaths.
Those desiring to lose weight are advised to stick with proven weight loss methods; consuming fewer calories and increasing physical activity.
-
Meece--ooops, that gives me 17 points, much closer to 20! There for a while I though I was going to cry at every doctor's appointment for the rest of my life! I think this the first appointment directly related to the beast that I didn't cry! There is hope yet!
Badger--What a wonderful weekend! Hooray for both of you!
Badger--Oh, yuck!!!!!!! How desperate can a person get???? Tapeworm????
-
My SIL is from Mexico City and had plenty of friends who did the worm weightloss thing. Then they take antibiotics to kill it off. YUCK!
Badger, the gathering sounds awesome! Glad you had fun and yummy food.

Roadrunner checking in
Missed Friday check in = 1 point
weight 228# = 1 point
water = 7 points
exercised = 3 points
extra credit: had my first colonoscopy on Thursday. Wish I could get credit for all the stuff I had to drink Wednesday!Total = 12 points
-
badger, yeah, I know but for some reason just wouldn't get up to refill my water at work. Need to get better about that. I could probably find something for the extra point but feel badly when I do 'other' bad things or procrastinate about things I should be doing!
Nativemainer, good for you. That's one of the procrastinating things I've been doing. Think about making the colonoscopy appt almost every day but won't pick up the phone. I still remember drinking that stuff and it stops me in my tracks. And since the last time I didn't drop even an ounce which I thought would be a given, doesn't make it any more appealing. Will try and do better this week.
-
Patoo--I was disappointed to lose almost 5# only to gain it back just as soon as I got rehydrated! The least we could do is drop a bunch of weight permanently! Don't blame you about putting it off, I put this on off for 4 years. I think I 'm going need to do it again in 3 years, but I'll see what the letter says in a couple of weeks.
-
Patoo, just call. Patoo, just call. Patoo, just call. You can do it, Patoo. There is NO advantage in waiting.
ok, I missed friday...We were still out of town on Friday taking DD to college. She was homesick before we even left. It was so hard to see her sobbing. I don't know if she will even stick it out for a year. I think she has already made up her mind to change majors and come back closer to home. My heart aches for her.
On the up side, I do think I'm down a bit on the scale, but will wait for next friday for a weigh in
-
I would like to join this group (love the accountability factor). Am going for second round of DD AC Wednesday. Did any of you start while going through chemo?
-
Martie,
WELCOME! We would love to have you join us.
I can't speak for the chemo part, but it's a great group of ladies.
-
Martie--thge accountability is a huge help for me, too! I refused chemo so i can't answer your question, but somewone will be along soo who can, I'm sure! Welcome!
-
hi Martie, welcome! I ate whatever tasted good during chemo but also tried to walk some every day, even if just to the mailbox and back. Yes I gained weight but have lost it slowly and with the support of the ladies here. (Took me 5 months to gain 20 lbs and 2 years to lose it!) Now I'm working on the old entrenched fat that was there before tx. ♥
