Well here's a downer. Governor Perry is calling a special July 1 session to address abortion regulations.
-
RR, exactly what I expected from that A-h*^e.
-
Yep. I saw that, RR. It is unsurprising -- since when has the will of the people meant anything to regressive dictators? And of course they didn't waste any time in instituting their discriminatory voter-suppression ID law and they won't let another week go by without putting into place their discriminatory redistricting maps. They are practically peeing themselves over the fact that the Texas electorate will soon be majority minority -- and their time will be done. I hope it is sooner rather than later.
E, I LOVE "The Newsroom" -- is is my hands-down favorite show, even over "Downton Abbey" or "Grey's Anatomy." One of the happy things about my retirement is that I will be able to watch it on the first airing every Sunday night. It is such a complex and meaty show that you can watch every episode twice and catch new stuff. I LOVE THAT SHOW!!!

What Retired Libby said....as well as Wendy Davis. Issa....so much of what I dislike and distrust about the GOP. GOP crooks are so bad.

Good for Ellen (she's Canayjun, y'know)

C4C, love it!
-
Kam170,
When you mentioned the great women politians of Texas you forgot my favorite, Barbara Jordon. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbara_Jordan
-
From all the things I've read about Huckabee, it's pretty clear he doesn't "know" Jesus, despite his assertions to the contrary.
-
Kam, I so loved and so miss the "Gentle Lady from Texas." What a force of nature!
-
C4C, and as somepointed out in another post, marriage predates Christianity, so Jesus' opinion is just one more. Although I don't remember reading any standby Jesus. Paul, on the other hand had a few things to say,but I'm a follower of Jesus, not Paul, so "who cares.?
-
Here's a good test for your respective news services - did any of you hear anything about something happening in the Australian Government today?
-
I did! I did! New P.M. but parkie/stimulated brain can't remember the name!

Hi Suzie. We did heard the news over here:
http://www.cnn.com/2013/06/26/world/asia/australia-leadership-vote/index.html
-
CfC....I'm chucking too. Mr. Huckabee is obviously infested with the same problem so many of his ilk have.
Jackie
-
I did, Suzie - although we saw it on the BBC news, which we watch every day. Al Jazeera, too (heads exploding in 3...2...1...).
"Marriage" actually developed as a contract - a business arrangement to safeguard and transfer wealth and property. The state (not a religious organization!) governs marriage, issues licenses and regulates it. If someone's marriage is threatened by someone else's marriage, then they have bigger problems than can be addressed by marriage.
L -
I heard it too Suzie. It is interesting how easily a party can change leaders and frightening how rivalries within a party can fester.
-
The classic putdown:
Courtesy of Mediaite:
“No man, not even a Supreme Court, can undo what a holy God has instituted,” Ms. Bachmann said in a statement. “For thousands of years of recorded human history, no society has defended the legal standard of marriage as anything other than between man and woman.” She said the court action “will undermine the best interest of children and the best interests of the United States.”
Asked to react to Bachmann’s statement, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi summed up what increasing majorities of Americans feel about such strident opposition with a dismissive “Who cares?” -
Suzie -- There was a lengthy article about Gillard and Rudd in our national newspaper, The Globe & Mail. Also heard about it on CBC News last night. Very, very interesting!
-
Yay for Pelosi.
Love the Repug recreation of history. Let's get it right. For thousands of years, marriage was a contract between a man and the fathers of however many women that man chose to marry. The women had no say in who they married or how many wives the husbands had.
And, for those followers of the Bible, how many of the Patriachs had more than one wife at the same time? Quite a number.
On Jesus weeping - I think he'd be weeping over the 30,000 people dead from gunshots every year, over the children and families who are hungry while politicians try to take away what little food they have, over the people who can't make a living wage while those at the top pile up more and more cash, over the people dying of diseases that could be cured if they had had health care, over dying forests and flooding cities. My question is why aren't more people who call themselves Christian also weeping over these things instead of focusing their anger and hate on people who wish to join in a legal, loving relationship?
-
It's obvious, Sandy: they're CINOs, and every law they try to pass, and every law that benefits the poor, or the disenfranchised, or that goes against their prosperity gospel or their End Times beliefs, they obstruct. That's why they're CINOs, and they've been steadily ruining the good name of Christianity for far too many years. No wonder the legions of non-believers are growing; they see the utter hypocrisy and immorality of the CINOs and want nothing to do with them. Oh, and then they witness the utter stupidity of Bachmann, Gohmert et al, and that simply reinforces it.
-
Sandy, you have expressed better than I what I wanted to say. Thank you.

Hi, all . . . coming up for air before I dive back in to work, so this is just a quick wave hello (with a special shout out & good wishes to Athena).
And speaking of waves . . . one of my running acqaintances, a guy with conservative/libertarian politics, has decided that Wendy Davis is his new hero. He immediately recognized her shoes as Mizuno Wave Riders, and that was all it took.
Runners are weird that way.
Totally agree with kad2kar, reading this thread is SOO refreshing and just plain fun. Love the insight, the humor, the pictures and the food talk!
Time to resubmerge, alas.

Belinda, I think you need to explain your abstinence cartoon! LMAO!
-
Could it mean, that by teaching sex education, a 12 year old might abstain from having sex, by knowing all the facts and consequences. Gee that was hard!
-
I'm glad you did hear the news from here.
Gillard stabbed Rudd in the back 3 years ago and now he has beaten her to become party leader again. She is an evil communist witch and he is an egotistic nutcase so neither of them is any good. He only got to be Prime Minister in Parliament for one day as the session has ended. There will be an election in September or maybe sooner. They wanted him back as leader because they were facing a wipeout under her. I find it hard to believe how the individual members only care about getting re elected and not about their communities. The really interesting thing was that she called the leadership ballot, saying the loser should quit politics, thinking she would win and she would finally get rid of him - that one sure blew up in her face. I hope his return doesn't help them win the next election or Susie will be packing up and moving to New Zealand.
-
Blue, that cartoon was republished on the NPR website which is where I saw it. Not sure why anyone wouldn't understand it. Oh wait, did I say NPR? Never mind, now I know why
. -
Hmmm, maybe this cartoon depicting the tea partying, extreme right wingers' hero will make sense to some.....
