Athena, love that second outfit the most!
Re: Christie. Good article in the Daily Beast today:
"Christie’s snub by CPAC underscores that many on the right still distrust the New Jersey governor over his Obama embrace, attacks on Republican lawmakers over Sandy aid—and because they don’t think he’s much of a conservative"
".........But mostly, in what could be seen as a rebuke to those hardliners in Washington, Christie extolled the virtues of compromise. He told of trying to get an income tax passed through the legislature in Trenton. Lawmakers rejected the idea, preferring a property-tax cut. So I sat around for a little while and let their plan stew, and then I said, you know what, what do I really care? I think my plan is better, but you know what, some tax cut is better than no tax cut, so let’s go for their tax cut,” he said. “Let’s compromise.....”
".....Some GOPers still hold Christie responsible for Mitt Romney’s loss in the presidential race last year, after Christie was seen literally embracing Obama when the president visited storm-stricken communities in New Jersey. It didn’t help matters when he said that House Speaker John Boehner’s inability to quickly pass the Sandy relief bill was “why the American people hate Congress” or when he declined an invitation to speak at a rally for the Second Amendment last month......."

I think you're right about the racists being jealous of Michelle. Let's face it she is everything they are not, i.e. beautiful inside and out, highly intelligent and kind hearted. Since she has done nothing they can pin on her to justify their hatred they just last out.
Wouldn't that be sweet to see Ashley Judd sworn in as the new junior Senator from Kentucky!
The crazies just don't get that their ONLY chance of winning the presidency again is to nominate somebody like Christie and actually let him be himself.
-
Don't forget Jon Huntsman -- they loathe him, too. He worked for the black guy, he said he believed in evolution, he supports marriage rights for everyone, and he said he won't set himself on fire to please the nutjobs. Of course, he is cast into the outer darkness, too -- and I imagine he is perfectly happy there with statesmen like Colin Powell! Huntsman was the biggest real threat to the President's re-election, although it was a foregone conclusion that he would never even win one primary because he is SANE.
Here is a fascinating article I just read this morning. I subscribe to a news brief service called Quartz, from The Atlantic Monthly (I LOVE The Atlantic!). This article popped up in the newsfeed - it is long but worth your time. It discusses how cultural differences have actually impacted even research on cultural differences, and turns topsy-turvy the idea that human brains are hardwired for things like altruism for the survival of the species. It is really interesting, and I'm putting the book on my to-read list from the library!
Voting Rights Act -- any of the members of SCOTUS who doubt that the Voting Rights Act continues to be desperately needed in the South (and, indeed, other places) should go stand at a polling place in a predominantly brown neighborhood and see the lines of people waiting to vote. Or during an election go to the polling places that had 8-hour lines in Florida and stand there and watch. Scalia makes me sick.

Guess we all knew Christie was going to "get" it when Sandy came and he and Pres. Obama were able to totally share empathy's. Sad when you can lose so much ground by doing the right thing --- but then who would know best about that but Pres. Obama.
Athena....I too started waiting for 2014 some time ago. Just totally discouraged with the we'll fix you attitude taken by so many who will not fruitfully work on anything. Just as history is un-kind to the final Bush presidencies, it will be just as un-kind to the obstructionists and rt. wing extremists that have attempted to display leadership that is not germane for the place and time they are in and never will be. I'm not wild about news -- but this last election plus the hard unrelenting work of the party in favor has everyone watching hard and if there were ever a time to get it together, this would sure be it. Don't think it will happen....so bring on 2014.

It's just a pity that, thanks to these people, history will also be unkind for millions of Americans, including those all across the country who will lose jobs due to the GOPs insistence on protecting the rich at all costs.
-
I'd like to think this would go in without all the strange marks, but probably won't. It is an opinion piece done by E.J. Dionne yesterday.
Ever since they took control of the House of Representatives in 2011, Republicans have made journeys to the fiscal brink as commonplace as summertime visits to the beach or the ballpark. The country has been put through a series of destructive showdowns over budget issues we once resolved through the normal give-and-take of negotiations.
E.J. Dionne Jr.
Writes about politics in a twice-a-week column and on the PostPartisan blog.
You may also like...
The old formula held that when government was divided between the parties, the contending sides should try to “meet in the middle.” But the current Republican leadership doesn’t know the meaning of the word “middle,” so intimidated by the tea party has it become.
Here is a way out of permanent crisis: President Obama should demand the repeal of all artificial deadlines and tell both houses of Congress that he won’t make further proposals until each actually passes a replacement to the sequester — not a gimmick or something that looks like an alternative, but the real thing.
With everyone on the record, normal discussions could begin, and Washington would no longer look like the set of a horror movie in which a new catastrophe lurks around every corner.
The solution to the problems of democracy is more democracy, so let both houses hold votes on all the potential remedies — on Obama’s own proposal, on packages put forward by Democrats Chris Van Hollen in the House and Patty Murray in the Senate, and on anything the Republicans care to proffer, including the sequester itself.
Let the House Republican majority show that it can come up with a substantial alternative or, failing that, allow a plan to pass with a mix of Republican and Democratic votes.
In the Senate, ditch the unconstitutional abuse of the filibuster and let a plan pass by simple-majority vote. Misuse of the filibuster is a central cause of Washington’s contorted policymaking. Let’s end the permanent budget crisis by governing ourselves though the majorities that every sane democracy uses.
The air of establishment Washington is filled with talk that Obama must “lead.” But Obama cannot force the House Republican majority to act if it doesn’t want to. He is (fortunately) not a dictator.
What Obama can do is expose the cause of this madness, which is the dysfunction of the Republican Party.
Journalists don’t like saying this because it sounds partisan. But the truth is the truth, whether it sounds partisan or not.
And a staunch conservative has succinctly explained why this problem really is a Republican problem. In an admirably candid interview Monday with Ezra Klein on MSNBC, Ben Domenech, a conservative blogger, said the new tea party Republicans in the House don’t want their leadership to sit down with Obama to talk because “they have their doubts about the ability of Republicans to negotiate any better situation.”
Read that carefully: We are in this mess because Republicans don’t trust their leaders to bargain. Domenech added that many conservatives “don’t buy this distinction between smart cuts and dumb cuts,” a distinction that is not “all that critical.” This is astonishing: Government is bad, so all cuts are more or less the same. And you wonder why we have a crisis?
House Speaker John Boehner keeps saying that the House has twice voted for ways to replace the sequester. What he doesn’t say is that those votes were held in the last Congress, so the bills are dead. If they are so good, why doesn’t the speaker bring them up again and pass them now? The answer is almost certainly that he doesn’t have the votes. If I’m wrong, Boehner can prove it by calling the question. I’m not worried.
One proposal Republicans are floating would give Obama more flexibility to administer the sequester. Thus, a party that says it can’t trust Obama enough to negotiate with him would trust him so much as to grant him exceptional power.
The contradiction is so glaring that Republicans are split on the idea, and it’s foolish anyway. As a senior administration official suggested, it’s like being told that two of your fingers will be cut off but you could choose which fingers. How is it a “concession” to ask Obama to organize the cuts he says would be a disaster?
The nation is exhausted with fake crises that voters thought they ended with their verdict in the last election. Those responsible for the Washington horror show should be held accountable. And only one party is using shutdowns, cliffs and debt ceilings as routine political weapons.

I've enjoyed catching up with the discussion here, also the animal pics and Wow - I've decided to hunt the resale shops for Armani. Every single look was to my taste, except for the berets.
-
Part of the racism against Michelle, I think, is pure jealousy. She happens to be beautiful, accomplished and successful in her ventures.
I'm sure they despise her popularity. She threatens their (the racists) idea of their own (theoretical) superiority. They can't possibly rejoice in her elegance, her class, her charm or anything she puts her hands on without threatning their own status in society, because she is African-American.Ofcourse, some of the haters just follow the lead haters, without realizing they might be following racists. So they end up sounding like racists themselves. I will atleast give them that benefit of the doubt.
Yorkie - my dream had other aspects, and it's all about my cats escaping my cat fence in the backyard. My animals are my children and know nothing of pitt bulls and cars.

Edited to add - even I like those clothes. Very wearable (in last pic).
-
Kam, I so know what you mean. After losing 2 outdoor cats my grandson and I have finally convinced my daughter to not let their new kitten outdoors. She's a smart little girl, and doesn't even seen to want out. They got her from the shelter at 6 months and she may know that it's not safe in them thar woods.
I love dogs, but would also like to get a kitten. However, my DH will not have a clawed cat in the house and I have read that it is truly cruel to declaw cats. So, we will have dogs.
-
Yorkie...most animal shelters have declawed cats that need a home. It is cruel to de-claw cats or kittens and is painful as well adding even more insult. My last re-homed cat has all four sets of claws gone. Just from the start they are miss-fits as their biggest natural defense is gone. Autumn hisses and growls at all the other cats. All would willingly ( at an established pecking order point ) love to come together and at times they can to a degree but Autumn is easy to rile. Too much looks like danger to her.
We still keep an indoor large crate just for her. She eats there, uses the potty box and often prefers to spend the night so that she can rest and sleep un-disturbed. Her life will never be the same and she will always need "extra" protection. She by the way does fine with the dogs.

Jackie, just so sad. Poor little Autumn.
I want to add that thank God she now has you and your DH to take care of her. That's an idea, though, about getting a de-clawed baby from the shelter. When the time comes, I'll check into it. DH only wants one pet at a time, so a vulnerable kitty would have our full attention and protection.
My other "pets" are the squirrels, birds, and darling oppossum I feed outdoors. I also like the raccoons, but they can be a problem. I try not to encourage them to come around, as if that does a lot of good, lol. The bobcat and I have had a territorial battle, which, to date, I seem to have won!
-
I guess some of you haven't heard. There will be no election in 2016. Pres Obama is becoming a dictator and will be a third term president. You need to keep up with the 'real' news.

I am loving all the animal pictures. Nothing makes me smile like the animal kingdom. I am hoping that will change when grandbabies come along.
We woke to a beautiful snowy day here. My dh took me out to the middle of our orchard to see the winter wonderland around us. I ended up taking over 100 photos. We have a showing today. I hope the snow doesn't melt off the trees before they get here.
Re cats being declawed. It used to be a painful procedure. Now it is much better. I only had my last kittens done (at the same time they were neutered) after seeing that first hand with my Mom's cats. The next day, you would never know they had it done...except that our furniture and wood trim has survived! I would not recomment it for outdoor cats. However, I am one who will never have an outdoor cat again.
-
Yorkie - what is the theory of not wanting clawed cats? I really got lucky with my 2 cats...they don't scratch furniture (only kitty post), they would stop on a dime before extending their claws at me (literally) and btw, do not shed (I've heard tuxedo's don't shed and I'm here to attest, with my cats, they do not, or barely!). They even get along at times
.
-
Good luck on your showing, Pip! Ours has been on and off and on and off. Right now hubby is so angry that it's possible he won't sign anything - and I don't blame him in the slightest. So we could be home owners for a few more years. Not what we wanted, but who knows - it could work out for the best.
I've really enjoyed all the pictures. I've been busy busy busy so haven't had a chance to catch up. Loved the Armani pics! -
Kam, your kitties are adorable! Regarding the claw situation, I've tried to reason with DH about this, but to no avail. When he's convinced he's right, well, there's just no arguing. But since there are so many animals needing adoption, probably doesn't matter if we rescue a dog or cat. I have just so loved my daughters' cats that I kind of want one.
-
My kitty allergies are so bad I swell up like Rocky after a fight if I touch them.
-
Blue...would love to see a pic of that!
Gardengumby...I thought your home was sold? Did it not close? So frustrating being in limbo, isn't it.
Oh oh...I hear my Mom listening to Michelle Obama give a speech about getting kids up and moving to keep healthy. How dare she.......
-
Blue - loved the video
Athena - fabulous clothes, I could never afford them, but they are so wearable
Kam - I agree with everything you've said about the JEALOUSY of MRO, she is so close to perfect in modeling what we hope all young women will aspire to - and she's raising what seem to be 2 fabulous young women - and CARES CARES CARES about people - I really have stopped reading the criticism, just makes no sense to me, upsets me, and it's easy to avoid.
SNOW - the "rain" we were supposed to get is suprisingly white, heavy, icy crust, and more white stuff - great GREAT day to stay home and play - for all you budding craftspersons/artists - monotypes made SO easy ( no more fussing with food gel, water, mixing slop) tra, la:http://www.gelliarts.com/collections/gel-printing-plates
Such fun, you can use cheapo acrylic paint, nothing fancy, easy, and FUN!!!!
happy today, all...except those picking on MRO

When people speak of "taking America back," do they mean back to the days when white men were in charge? Is it THAT frightening to have a brown man as President, and women in office? So frightening that people threaten violence; stockpile guns, canned food and liquor; and pass vaginal probe bills? Why are people so afraid? I am well and truly puzzled.
-
We had stabbing here on the Toronto subway today. The man is okay. The radio shows are all discussing how scary this is but most of the callers are thankful that he didn't have a gun. There is also talk about putting metal detectors at the subway entrances. At least it would make the 'bad' guys think twice about carrying a weapon around.
-
yorkiemom ... kittens are crazy little whirlwinds of chaos. You know that right? An older cat is much less challenging
I'm not in favor of declawing either. But my Sidney was front declawed and it did nothing to stop him from thinking (knowing) he was king of the hill. He never acted like it bothered him a bit. So you don't have to think that any declawed cat you got would be any different from a clawed cat. Some are but not most IMO.My best friend's sister practically spits out her dislike of Michelle Obama. BF has asked her why and 'she doesn't know why and can't come up with even one reason, she just does not like her and hates having her as First Lady'. If I dislike somebody that violently I am going to be able to bend your ear for quite a while telling you why. This is not a person I would consider a racist ... but really what am I to think??
The Violence Against Women Act got passed today ... so at least something has gotten done. Finally.
-
Wabbit -- It often happens that when someone doesn't have an answer to such a question (Why don't you like her?"), it's because they're reluctant/ashamed to admit what that answer actually is.

As for declawing of cats: We've had cats for umpteen years; never had any declawed but don't let them outside either. It would indeed be inhumane to let a declawed kitty outdoors. Our kitties have a scratching post that they use religiously. I doubt that declawing at an early age is really any different to neutering as far as discomfort is concerned. Our little Abby has congenital periodontal disease and has had teeth removed. A stay overnight at the vet's and she's good as new the next day! But with a missing canine tooth, her smile is sometimes a bit lopsided
. -
I'm going to wade into the declawing issue. I was very against it. My cats weren't declawed and used scratch pads and posts with no problem. Then we got Sidney as a kitten. He scratched on wood ... as in cabinets, door trim, furniture ... to the point of destruction and would not be deterred. It got to where he was being hollered at and taken to the scratch pad so much that he (and the other dogs and cats in the house) were turning into nervous nellies. And hubby was beyond pissed off. I certainly wasn't going to take him back to the high kill shelter we got him from, or throw him outside, and nobody wants a cat that is known to destroy woodwork. So ... we had him front declawed. And I felt horrible about it, and boohooed all over the place. Meanwhile Sidney had bandages on his paws for a few days, would not even stop jumping all over the place for the time he was supposed to be babying his paws and acted like it was a big bunch of nothing. He was then free to 'scratch' on wood to his little heart's content and lived happily ever after with us for over 15 years. I would not do it as a first resort, but no longer do I question others on the issue either. It can be the much lesser evil.

Speaking of kittens ... https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=380753158690164
Gumby ... sorry that your house deal might be going sour. Our last house sale the buyers kept asking for one thing after another until we finally told them to pack sand. Then they got reasonable and all went well. Hope it works out however you want it to. Know you are a little conflicted about selling right now anyway.
-
Wabbit, I do know that and will consider an older animal (we'll probably still get a dog), however I love to get them as babies. I can totally see why you declawed your Sydney, and, faced with those choices, I would have done the same thing. Loving and caring for an animal is far preferable than putting them into dangerous and deadly situations.
-
-
Blue, reminds me of Gulliver's Island!

-
Well, after the deal basically going south 3 times, it appears that it is a done deal. The close date has moved a bit (which is better for us). Now we need to find a place to live. We had one lined up but lost that one during one of the "gone south" times. Our allergies are a big deal as we cannot live in a place where cats (especially) or dogs have been in the recent past. We also want at most a 6 month lease, so that's an issue, too. If it ain't one thing....
-
Enjoyful - I've wondered the same thing - "take out country back" - really, where did it go? Back to where? From whom?
Finally learned to laugh at it. Back to the days of "Leave it to Beaver" or "father Knows Best" - and as we all know, back street abortions where women DIED, segregation legal in so much of the country, and still a part of life in places in the North which just didn't talk about it. FEAR. FEAR. FEAR. That's the only think I can think of - sad, sad, sad.
AND venturing very, very far into paranoia with a "fear" of attack from the United Nations? Really...I've heard of that too.
-
Sun and E - doncha know they have to take it back from the socialist, god-hating, muslim, secularist, hateful and hating LIBERAL, gay, Obama-worshipping, dark, Jesus-hating, non-Republican, non-religious people who don't agree with every word that comes out of tea-baggers mealy mouths.
