What are you doing for fun??

Well, that was not exactly a brief tale
Jill,
Your daughter is wise to look into something other than flying. I don't know many who still fly and hard as it is to believe, my former colleagues are starting to retire. The pay is supposed to be quite low and contracts (if they are unionized employees) now allow many more working hours and shorter lay overs. The airlines are operating on much diminished budgets and even the staffing on the plane has been cut to the FAA minimum. Pan Am always staffed over the minimum as it was the only way to deliver our legendary service. I also would be quite unhappy being treated rudely by passengers or even being assaulted by them. And I cringe these days when I see people traveling in torn up shorts, unwashed T-shirts and flip flops. You don't have to dress up but at least take a shower and remember you are not going to the beach!

I enjoyed reading it anyway, Caryn. When I went to the Chicago conference I asked a male flight attendant what my daughter would need education wise and he kind of smirked and shared with me what you're saying as far as the pay goes. I think my daughter kind of figured it to be a logical and more exciting step up from waitressing. Although she does enjoy waitressing and works long hours on her feet and doesn't seem to mind it. She tries to run everybody else from the sidelines even though not her job.
. Still waiting for closer to normal health so I can book us a trip to Florida!

Caryn, looking forward to sharing our beautiful country with you.
Fun for today...... Going to an art class to indulge my creative energies : )
Never been much of a painter, in fact I've never painted (writing and singing is my 'thing').
But what better time to start and learn.
Here in NZ the sun is shining and the birds are singing. My boys have left for school. I think I'll have myself a cup of tea and just be..... And then it's off to art class for me : ) -

Caryn - so AWESOME!! Thanks for sharing your stories, I wish air travel was as glamorous as it used to be, what a sadly bygone era. Loved reading your post.
-
Love perusing the photos from the everythingpanam web site. I was always a bit of an aviation geek (used to make model airplanes growing up and loved to go to the airport with my dad to watch planes take off and land). Love, love, love reading about your experience!!
-
Great post, caryn. I wanted to be a flight attendant at one time but was told I wouldn't be accepted because I bit my nails ... A bad habit that I finally conquered! I am like nancy, just love seeing planes take off and land. I take my grandson to a playground near BWI and we wave at the people in the planes. It still gives me a thrill.

I'm taking my son to the Virginia Children's Museum this weekend. They are having a Chinese New Years festival. I want to see the Dragon Dance!
-
Thanks ladies! My dad used to take us out to JFK to watch the planes take off and land. Sometimes we'd go inside the terminal, the old Pan Am Worldport, and I'd stand before the arrivals/departures board, in awe of the exotic destinations. I found it amazing that someone walking through the terminal in NY had started out in Nairobi, Tehran or some other exotic location. I never imagined that I'd get to be doing that myself one day!

We went to Disneyland!
Watching my two year old enjoy her ballet class!
Hugging my soft and sweet Labrador!

Julie and Julia (or was it the other way round?). I love that movie and I love to cook but have found that since dx, I do far less of it. We have Presidents Week break this week so when my younger dd suggested that I make boeuf Bourgogne, I thought why not? If you have seen the movie this is the first dish that Julie makes from Julia Child's cookbook. I carefully patted the beef dry, as in the movie, and leapt back as I ignited the brandy to burn off the alcohol on the carrots and onions. Yes, this takes a whole bottle of wine! I chose a lovely Pinot noir and did pour a wee bit for myself. It is now in a low oven for an hour and a half and then there's still sautéing and adding the mushrooms. Whew! Very labor intensive but looking forward to a great meal. Bon appetit!

One of my favorite Julia recipes! I generally use a Cote du Rhone since that is what I own. I bet your house smells just great.

Susan,
Oh, it smells like heaven in here! What a perfect meal for a cool night(at least by Northern CA standards). Dd and her fiancé should be here soon but I might have to have a mini portion before they get here.

I'm going to the South California Home and Garden Show today. Fun to me! Looking for some new garden ideas and of all things, soy bean seeds. Why are soy bean seeds impossible to find?
Anyway, it should be fun. We have perfect weather today too, so I'm looking forward to a wonderful day.
-
Hope you have a great time, weather here is cold and rainy, I guess its going to be movie day for me.

Having a great weekend with our grandson. A few weeks ago we turned a spare bedroom into "his" room. He's had so much fun choosing posters and turning it into a "sports" room. Today he chose a Ravens pennant to add to his wall and we laminated pictures of the Super Bowl ring. I'm sure his mom has something to do with it but he's into pink and Breast Cancer Awareness bracelets. He chose pink duck tape at Michael's today and made matching pink bracelets for both he and I. Spending time with him is really, really, one of my most favorite things to do!
-
Spent the day painting and repainting my hallway over and over in an effort to train my youngest son how to paint with his dad as his boss. Sadly having to give up painting full time, cant stay on a ladder anymore. But he did really well, and Ill still be able to do low stuff. It was fun and I think he'll make a good painter (if he can stand working with his Dad.) Ive just learned to ignore his big mouth when he rants...We'll see.....

Basking in the sun whilst reading a book and enjoying the sound of crickets : )
-
Each time I go to the stable to see our horse Hidalgo, all my trouble is gone.......
Today, we could hear the spring birds for the first time. Hidalgo, ( its my daughter who is riding him)
is my love, innocent, pure and without any judgement. All he wants is an apple or a carrot, so sweet....
-
Keepingfaith, I have to say that New Zealand is now on my bucket list. What a beautiful country. I watched the movie, Tracker the other day, Dont know what part of the country it was in but it was just gorgeous.
-
Mamita49....wish I could meet Hildago. I bet he is a wonderfully calming presence in your life. Give him an apple for me... :-).
-
Spent alot of time outdoors, sun felt wonderful!
-
Got to put in a full day of work today, and it felt so good! Got done renovating the other house and started on a new one today. Just painting this one, so I was able to work all day and not worry about breathing in all the sheet rock dust. My son did really well, so I dont think my husband will be so worried about taking him to work now. All it took was a little patience to teach him, which my husband is a little short of. Little ironic though, the people we're doing this job for, just happens to be the lawyer who did my will six months ago when my surgeon said I only had 4 months left.....Ha!

-
He's adorable, Mary. I think he's just a little younger than my 'best friend' who is 3.5. And if I can muster up the energy for fun today I'm going to take him to the book store today to get another Where's Waldo book!
-
Visiting with my now 8 month old grandaughter. It's the most fun. Hoping to get a week in a warm sunny, not too far destination in the next couple of months.
Any suggestions? I'm fantasizing about Jamaica, Cuba (Canadians can visit there), Mexico...
