Pip, we call that song, "My Country Tis of Thee."
-
I never noticed that before...same music. I just heard it in the background and though that was odd. Didn't listen to the words. Was it taken from the British anthem or is it just similar?
-
Pip,
From Wikipedia:
"My Country, 'Tis of Thee", also known as "America", is an American patriotic song, whose lyrics were written by Samuel Francis Smith. The melody used is that of the national anthem of the UK, "God Save the Queen", arranged by Thomas Arne and used by many Commonwealth realms and some other monarchies. The song served as one of the de facto national anthems of the United States (along with songs like "Hail, Columbia") before the adoption of "The Star-Spangled Banner" as the official anthem in 1931.[2]"
Alexandria,
I agree...."The Battle Hymn of the Republic" was amazing.
-
Athena, I am not really familiar with the modern stuff. It may well be hideous. But old Cristobal remains one of my all time favorites.
-
Thanks Belinda. Funny that I never noticed that before. We used to sing God Save the Queen along with our anthem in school every morning. And the Lord's Prayer, of course. So, when I heard the tune in the background, I heard the British anthem.
Beautiful melody regardless of the words.

Beyoncé was very cool. Good performance and pretty gutsy to rip out her ear piece half way through.

Thank you belinda for your list, just want to add my favorite MLK quote:
“Power without love is reckless and abusive, and love without power is sentimental and anemic. Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice, and justice at its best is power correcting everything that stands against love.” Martin Luther King, Jr.
I was moved by everything at the Inauguration - especially the Poem. Going now to look up more about the poet, and download the entire poem. All I know, is that he is Latino, and openly Gay. Now I want to know more.
I'm SO SO SO grateful we elected BHO for a second term as President of the United States.Hope all have a very special day. -
I've loved watching the Inauguration! Just so proud of our President, First Lady, the First Daughters and First Grandmother!
Hubby is mad that the President didn't mention bringing down the deficit. I told him to wait for the State of the Union Address.

It's a happy and joyful day in this country!

The whole day has been very moving for me. Sadly, didn't really get to "listen" to Pres. Obama's speech....drat, drat, drat. The gal I replace ( I think generally very un-interested in today ) lives basically by the Old Testament and so she was rather non-quiet and insisting on 'nursing' report. Sigh !!!!!
I think it was quite balanced on the whole -- a bit more quiet and dignified. Just like President Obama. What a wonderful, wonderful day.

Athena - lol on the fashion shoots! But, you know, if the avant garde wasn't willing to look ridiculous, well, we'd all still be wearing bloomers and corsets. Or something.
I've been scarce in these parts because of a heavy work-related travel schedule this past week (plus an iphone mishap that left me temporarily incommunicado). Then, when I got back -- WHAM. We had a second wedding reception/party for our NYC friends last night. It was a wonderful, wonderful party -- friends of mine (including one BCOer) discovered they were connected to friends of Eric's in ways they hadn't known. We ordered way too much food, and even after trucking a bunch down to a local soup kitchen, we're going to be (happily) eating the leftovers for a while.
Anyhow, we're still riding the high today. Or maybe the high comes from the special inauguration ale ("Ommegang Obamagang") our favorite neighborhood bar brought out of its cellar today.
It's been great fun catching up with everyone. I just love the conversations, the fondness, and the humor!

Lewing, so good to "see" you pop in. And congrats, again!
One of my favorite moments from today.....so human and humble:
"Sworn in again, Obama lingers for last look"
"It was a seemingly wistful moment at the halfway mark of his presidency, before the celebratory parade and the evening's galas.
Shortly after exhorting the United States to continue its "never-ending journey" to live up to the ideals of its founders, on his way off the platform at the West Front of the Capitol, President Barack Obama stopped to drink in the scene before him.
"I want to take a look one more time," he told those surrounding him. "I'm not going to see this again."
(it's the 1 minute clip...scroll down to the video on the left that says "Obama: 'I'm not going to see this again'"....):

Happy Inauguration Day to us all.
Did anyone else catch the National Geographic show on the Genographic Project? They have been collecting and mapping information from DNA provided from communities all over the world. I hope they repeat it soon. It was fascinating to see the information on the migration paths from ground zero, so to speak, in Africa.
Now the public may participate, but its expensive for the kit. $199. That us a no go for me but would love to do it. -
Love, love, love Michelle Obama's inauguration gown! (it's designed by Jason Wu) Watching CNN. Great first dance! (I flipped to MSNBC...they were covering it.....I flipped to Fox....they weren't covering it; instead Hannity was blabbering on (with Karl Rove!).....sooooo typical!!!! lol!!!!)
Back to CNN.......

Wonderful!

WTF were those starving people wearing??? It reminds me of that I Love Lucy episode, when Lucy wore a burlap sack and a lampshades on her head. Actually, Lucy's outfit looked better than the ones above.
-
When you look at designers from the 50's through the 80's, the clothes were not only exquisite but also wearable. Then too many designers started to decide that "drama" and "shock value" were the prerequisites for a good runway show. JMHO, and the main reason I couldn't care less about what the couturiers are cranking out these days!
BTW, I think Michelle's new hairstyle is lovely, and so were her outfits today. She really does you guys proud!
-
Ah, the value of after the fact news. Re-watching so many of the parts of today I missed it was stunning. The whole of the speech given after the swearing in had been accomplished.
Also....the last look that Belinda brought up. There was a lot of humanity in that look. I'm so thankful I did not miss that. Also had no idea the "speech" was only 18 minutes long. Probably close to some kind of record, but he really filled that 18 mins. up.
Enjoyful....too funny but I feel the same way. It has been said that cameras add ten pounds to you --- if those models were "looking" ten pounds heavier than they really are....they are definitely starving.
See you all tomorrow.

lindasa - I am glad Galliano is no longer with Dior and I an happy to be seeing some designers actually make clothes - Balenciaga being one of the hidious exceptions, IMO. I agree with you. I think the pendulum is finally swinging back, though. And believe it or not, the models are mostly getting less thinner. Europe has banned underweight models. Of course the US refuses, saying "we will regulate ourselves." Idiots.
-
Athena, lol, yes I see your point. The striped diaper is particularly fetching

Apparently the designer was Ghesquière (never a fan) and he has been fired after this collection. Gee, one wonders why?
-
I like Columbia clothing myself. I have one pair of Dolce & Gabbana shoes that I love but wear once every three years. Maybe. D&G doesn't make barn shoes, unfortunately.
