Linda - there you go, that cartoon depicts, truely, the only way the 2nd ammendment is applicable to our right to bear arms.  Like an assault rifle is going to out maneuver a missle-firing Drone.

Suzie - was reading about your temps down under.  Australia has had to add purple to their heat charts because the highest temperatures are going off the charts?

In my other (office) locale, I once experienced 118F (47.7C) degrees - dry heat.  (Dry heat does make a positive difference once you hit the high 90's.)  Coming out of an AC building, for about 5 seconds it felt wonderful, like wrapping a warm blanket around a cold core, but that quickly passed.  Could hardly hold my steering wheel until my AC took over.

    http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-205_162-57562752/australia-goes-purple-as-temperature-goes-off-the-charts/

The bureau's interactive weather forecasting chart previously capped at 50 degrees Celsius (122 Fahrenheit.) The model now goes all the way to 54 degrees (129 degrees F), higher than Australia's all-time record temperature of 50.7 degrees (123 degrees F) from 1960.

"The scale has just been increased today and I would anticipate it is because the forecast coming from the bureau's model is showing temperatures in excess of 50 degrees," David Jones, head of the bureau's monitoring and prediction unit, told Australian newspaper The Age.

The scorching heat over central Australia has yet to cross the 50 degree barrier, but Dr. Jones believes it is only a matter of time.

Not to inspire fear of bears or more guns in the national forests but when we were staying in a cement block cabin outside the Sequoias, we watched a bear open a car like he was opening a bag of chips--stuck his paw in the crack above the door and pulled down.  Never have I been happier to have been staying in a shabby unattractive cement block building.

The owners of the car had left their car stuffed with goodies.  Turns out bears had learned that even if you can't smell it, stuff in cars is GOOD!!!!!  by contrast we left our car empty and boring and the bear ignored it.

Hi all. It is rainy & gray here.  It suits my mood perfectly.

    hugs to all.

That's pretty cool you saw a bear actually do that 3mons.  I've had many encounters with bears, but nothing so dramatic!

When we visited Alaska, a tour guide told us a horrible bear story. Recently, at that time, a couple living in an isolated cabin was chased to the roof of their house by an aggressive (hungry?) bear. Husband made a run for it to get help. When he came back with some rangers all they found were pieces of his wife. Just what I wanted to hear while in the Alaskan wilderness!

Also, we went on a dog sled ride about the time when bears were coming out of hibernation. I asked the driver what happens if we see a bear. He said, not to worry, there is always a designated "bear dog" who will leave the sled team and lure the bear far away from the rest of the team. Since the dog is so fast it always escapes the bear and knows how to return home. Somehow I wasn't very reassurred about our, or the bear dog's, safety.

Bears can run uphill very well. So, if there's a bear after you, pray for a hill and run down it. Bears, because, of their height & weight don't do well going downhill.

Or, you could just stay out of the forest.

    Peace

    Lindasa, good cartoon.

Pip, Jon Stewart was brilliant and spot on, as always, last night.  Here's a clip from it and here's how he summarizes things:

"Gun rights activists' paranoid fear of a possible dystopic future prevents America from addressing its actual dystopic present"

Kam - it didn't get as hot as they predicted yesterday so it was bearable - we had a sea breeze. Central Aust is all desert - we'll see if it gets hot enough to use the new colour.

For those members regarding spell check. Our tech team has some questions, and it would be helpful if you could PM the answers to us!

Are you on a desktop computer? For mobile devices we strip out our rich text editor (which includes the spell check) and let the mobile device's spell check do its thing.

Assuming you are on a desktop computer, it would be ideal to get examples of where, specifically you run into problems (URLs, which words triggered the "highlight" and which words triggered the "pop-up explaining which words are wrong"?

The spell checker has to be turned on. We are also wondering if you have a browser that's trying to do some of this.

If we can get platforms, operating systems (OS) and browser, that would be very helpful.

Athena, when I start thinking of the treasures found in California, these three things come up near the top of my list:  Yosemite NP, Sequoias and Redwoods.  And I live in the forest with many varieties of conifers, but not Sequoias and Redwoods.  They truely are incredible and too often I take this state for granted for how varied our ecosystems are and the unique species found here.

    I am always behind.

Ei finally had my astigmatism corrected last year. Toric contacts are expensive so I was just ignoring it bi it had apparently goten much worse and when I cam out of the optometrist's office with my first toric lenses, it was like getting my first pair of glasses. I could SEE.

I am also very nearsighted. Without my glasses I can't see the first line of the eye chart but fortunately it has always been correctable. Now I have one eye corrected for near and one for far with my contacts (monovision) but don't know how much longer that will go on. I think I will soon need reading glasses for all close work.

So AIG's board has decided not to sue the federal government.

That leaves only welfare King and freeloader Hank Greenberg, the former CEO, filing suit against AIG supposedly on behalf of shareholders.

Mantra for GOP capitalists: Let's have smaller government - we want the rest for ourselves!

    Still fuming.

Don't like sociopaths. Eric Holder should counter-sue and put it to the supreme court. What do these people take the US for - a personal piggy bank?

Unfortunately Obama shows a notorious lack of testosterone when it comes to: Wall Street and Torture.

Yes, sigh! Maybe we have to wait for midterm elections and a dem majority in the house before the government starts to get serious about Dodd-Frank.

I was always taught to give back to the community. It's really incredible how some people think they are just owed, owed, owed, entitled, entitled, entitled. No sense of social responsibility. If you have a penthouse on Fifth Avenue AND a chateau in France AND a country house somewhere else AND a hunting lodge somewhere else.....and heaps of money in the bank, shouldn't you be ready to devote your life to higher pursuits? Maybe I am naive...

Credit where it's due: Chelsea Clinton has worked for a Hedge fund - in pursuit of money just like her nouveau riche parents. The Bush daughters are teachers, and the Bushes themselves give 10 percent of their income to the Salvation Army. Worst president in history, but he gave back, and I wil say this: I would like to have someone like Dumbya as my neighbor. He and Laura would be the first to lend me some flour or check on my house if there was anything remiss and I was gone. As much as I loathed Bush as president, the man had a personal decency about him. The Obamas too.

We need more people who realize that they are PRIVILEGED - NOT OWED - and that they should give back.

Wow - you should really go to the link and read the rest of the description!

"DESCRIPTION: The Citadel Community will house between 3,500 and 7,000 patriotic American families who agree that being prepared for the emergencies of life and being proficient with the American icon of Liberty — the Rifle — are prudent measures. There will be no HOA. There will be no recycling police and no local ordinance enforcers from City Hall.

LOCATION: We are in the process of selecting the ideal location among the beautiful mountains of Idaho in the American Redoubt."

    http://www.iiicitadel.com/index.html

And they have this whole list of rules for the families that move there, including:

One: Once ratified, this list of conditions may only be altered by unanimous consent of all parties governed by this Agreement, i.e. full-time Residents. Full-time residency will be defined by a select panel of full-time Residents who will also establish guidelines for acceptable exceptions for absences.

Two: Every able-bodied Patriot aged 13 and older governed by this Agreement shall annually demonstrate proficiency with the rifle of his/her choice by hitting a man-sized steel target at 100 yards with open sights at the Citadel range. Each Resident shall have 10 shots and must hit the target at least 7 times.

Three: Every able-bodied Patriot aged 13 and older governed by this Agreement shall annually demonstrate proficiency with a handgun of choice by hitting a man-sized steel target at 25 yards with open sights at the Citadel range. Each Resident shall have 10 shots and must hit the target at least 7 times.

Four: Every able-bodied Patriot of age within the Citadel will maintain one AR15 variant in 5.56mm NATO, at least 5 magazines and 1,000 rounds of ammunition. The responsibility for maintaining functional arms and ammunition levels for every member of the household shall fall to the head of household. Every able-bodied Patriot will be responsible for maintaining a Tactical Go Bag or Muster Kit to satisfy the Minuteman concept. Details TBD and posted elsewhere.

    more here:  http://www.iiicitadel.com/patriotagreement.html

Their revenue plan includes a gun factory and, "Additionally, the Citadel intends to become a premiere tourist destination for Americans from sea-to-sea and border-to-border. Not only will tourists travel to see the only real fortified castle & town in America, we intend to offer numerous attractions including a firearms museum where enthusiasts actually get to fire their favorite arms from history!"
