LOL! Enjoyful. If you think Medicare is bad you should try our Universal Healthcare. They have us lined up for those "death panels" a mile long. As Jed Clampet would say......Piiiiiiittiful!
Ahhhhhhhhhhh Led Zeppelin! Kashmir was my fav. after Stairway. I'm so happy I grew up in those times too. Really opened up the mind and the universe, if you were paying attention. Jethro Tull, Jim Morrison, Janice Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Jimi, Steppenwolf, Santana, Pink Floyd, just to name a few. I wanna go back!
-
My brother could do the drum sequence of this perfectly.
-
On other news, Wendel aka Spartacus, had me up at 3 a.m. because he did poopydoo in his crate and wanted out. He got into Lilah's food last night and it didn't agree with him. That, or Lilah has cursed him. hahahahaha!
-
Poopydoo? Language, missy!
-
E, ROFLMAO literally
-
Enjoyful and Glenna, good luck on the decadron! Enjoyful, I hope you are planning on compiling your medicare musings for publication at some point. They are priceless!
-
Belinda ... thanks for sharing that clip ... brought chills down my spine! Ed Plant looks fabulous and Anne Wilson couldn't have been a better pick to sing Stairway! When the choir came in it took my breath away! Damn I miss the rock and roll of the old days.
hugs,
Bren

Wow, that was the best version of Stairway I've heard!!! I love Heart. Amazing voices. I had tears in my eyes, as did Plant and gang. Double wow!
-
Checking in to say and E....you really should make a book of your Medicare musings. It would be fantastic. Listening to all the "chatter" as of late about the slope and other items. That leads to a lot of teeth grinding but sure hopeful that the right things will happen........America needs to get back on track.
Some amusing news from Lawrence O'Donnell. Life goes on !!!!
We have roughly about 5 ins. of the white stuff. Almost a surprize to me since we had a warm winter last yr. Only two lt. dustings of snow even. Wondered what would happen this yr. This is good though.....as we won't have a flea invasion coming up this summer with the temps we are having now. Actually.....last June we were having triple digit temps ( hot ) and a lot of the bug invasion died off really early.....but not the fleas which we fought with a vengence. Well, here's hoping that we don't have an "extended" winter. Anything with the global changes is possible though.
I enjoyed the Heart piece as well. Janis Joplin was a big favorite. So many are gone that I so enjoyed.
Off to work in a bit.

I can't watch it here at work, but will do once I get home (my own monitor is better than the tiny, postage-stamp one I have in the office). Amusing "Stairway to Heaven" story - when I was in college, "Stairway" was very popular. One April Fool's Day, the college radio station played "Stairway" for the entire day. They announced it like they were playing other songs, but every.single.song was "Stairway." It was hilarious! We were easily amused back in the mid-70s.

Edit

HL, aren't you about three days away from retirement? How does that feel?
The seventies was as great for music as the eighties was a DISASTER! Can't believe there are so many radio stations that actually specialize in eighties' music. The biggest shame of that decade, IMO: REO Speedwagon!!!! The nineties....not sure what to think - lots of Hall of Shamers, but also new styles.
-
Axial tilt is the reason for the season.
Lots and lots of snow.
Our traditions are the same as yours. Eat too much wonderful food. Snooze. Play with the kids/ grand kids. Skype family who are far away. It isn't a Christian thing. More of a need to acknowledge that the days are short, nights long. And we NEED each other. -
-
Athena-totally agree with you on REO Speedwagon-yuck. Another one I can't stand is Rush.
Mary
-
Mary - And nowadays we have to put up with the likes of Kei$ha! (Dollar sign being part of name)

-
Anyone with good publicity and auto-tune can be a singer(?) these days.

Back to 70s music, I acknowledge the greatness of Zeppelin (I'd be crazy not to -ha.ha) and of "Stairway to Heaven" but that song has become like Vivaldi's Four Seasons. After the first thousand plays on every station, commercial and dentist's office I got sick of it and it started to sound as exotic as "Mary Had a Little Lamb."
My favorites from the 70s (besides The Doors) include David Bowie. And AC/DC, which I know isn't for everyone. Have eclectic tastes in music. I love Eminem and Ella Fitzgerald.
Then there are those you KNOW are not "great" so you admit to liking them slightly red faced or "to dance to" - Britney Spears!
(Ducking for cover!!)
ETA: Please be gentle with the tomatos and beer cans!

-
Athena .. there was lots of rock from the 80's that I liked. I loved Guns n Roses! So many of their songs were great.
Hope everyone is having a good day.
I'm sick ... my mom stayed with us for a few days before Christmas and her gift to me was her sickness! I feel like Tim's big truck ran me over.
hugs,

Athena, I am actually retiring June 1 -- it is Kam who is retiring in 3 days. I have quite a while to prepare for it. I imagine Kam is feeling a little disoriented. As for me, I can't wait! I am working through all the "I will no longer be (title). When people ask me what I do, I can say 'Whatever I want to.'" Because I have been so involved in my career and it closely tracks with my personality, I expected the transition to be difficult. Fortunately, I am underused and undervalued by my current management chain, so I am excluded from a lot of stuff that would be interesting. That is not a bad thing when you are cutting the cord!
Not a fan of 70s music either, although it encompasses my high school and college years. There were some bright spots (Jethro Tull, early Chicago, some Eagles, some America, Bill Withers) but my heart lies in the 1960s! ETA: Thanks, Belinda - how could I have forgotten Fleetwood Mac?! And Blondie. But disco was an abomination from which I have yet to recover!
Yes, Kay -- axial tilt is the reason for the season! :-) When I overheard someone saying, "I'm going to stick with the ORIGINAL greeting for the season: 'Merry Christmas.'" I pointed out that actually, the ORIGINAL greeting would likely be "Happy bang on the drum, make a lot of noise and light a big fire so the sun will come back festival." That got me a snarl and lip curl, so I was successful. ;-)

There was a lot of "fluffy" music in the 80s.
-
Ah, HL - I misread your June as Jan (happens often). It's great that you are excited about it although I understand it will be hard to de-couple the sense of identity (I am a ____)
The Beatles and the Stones are the best....
Madonna, IMO, is the most untalented narcissist there has ever been (well, apart from John Boehner...) Her real brilliance lies in self-promotion. I think that is where reality TV must have gotten its start...they said , "look, Madonna has no talent and she is really famous"...and so in came the Kardashians.
Belinda, I had forgotten the GoGos - lol!
Kam - how is your retirement countdown coming?
ETA: Disco was no fine art, that's for sure, but it was the first music since the 20s that you could actually dance to.
-
David Letterman had the trio from Led Zeppelin on his show last night. Great fun and yes, they were amazed by the choir ending of Stairway to Heaven as well. I thought all the covers were done very well.
I was also mesmerized by the ballerina, Makarova? She was lovely. -
My retirement plan was to get bored. It has been 8 years and not even close to bored. If I had made a plan, the things I am doing would not have been on it because it's a surprise to me what I like doing now!
-
I also loved Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Crosby Stills Nash and Young and everything Woodstock.
It was so weird going to work yesterday - I was the ONLY passenger on the bus all the way to the city. Coming home there were about 6 people.
Enjoyful - glad you had a nice Xmas and that Medicare is being kind to you.

Hi guys.. I'm going through the 5 stages of grief in compressed format, it seems. Last day of work is January 3rd and it still seems like something very abstract to me. If I hadn't mentioned it, I had this vague idea of retiring maybe 2 years out. I think BC (and the buyout) gave me a big dose of reality. I'm mortal after all!! Today I'm starting to clean out my office (this will be very very hard for me). Tomorrow I will start the paperwork.
Don't know why, but I've been crying a lot. Every single event is touching all of my insecurities and vulnerabilites. The snow, retiring, even using a new recipe and having it fail. I will admit, I'm a little fearful about this next chapter of my life and it might be coloring everything I do at the moment, so any advice is welcome.
Lassie - loved what you wrote. Just the kind of thing that helps me right now.
-
Morning all
Love all the music comments. 60s and 70s the best, The Doors, the Who Rolling Stones , David Bowie etc etc and I was also into folk - bit of a rebel in those days. Used to take my little banner out and protest. Yes we protested here too.
Must fly as I am going to help DD1 correct her bibliography for her Doctoral thesis.
-
HL - congrats on June 1....you do sound ready. Totally get the underutilized. Since I missed 1/2 of this last year at work (BC), I'm sort of out of the loop, though "the loop" has gotten less and less interesting to me. There are projects I wanted to finish and those that I wanted to start (those extra ones that "they" don't get that need to be done), and I will miss the work, but not the chaos surrounding this place. Time for the young ones to take over

-
((((Kam))))
I always think I will never retire, as I am a workaholic - but sometimes it is life that retires us. Although we can always re-enter the rat race in one form or another, even if it is through volunteer work. A lot of people go in and out of retirement, though, so you never know what will happen. This may be the beginning of something you love.
