    In the past I never took time off, leaving me with almost a year vacation, that is not even counting my sick leave Human Resources was actually stuned when they looked at my time...I could litterally take almost 2 years off before I even started on short term disability when the time comes.  I have now got to the point I am tired between the beating my body took from Chemo and the havoc Sjogren (autoimmune disorder) is having, I basically have enough energy for work and that is it.  The boss said take some time off so, and the Doc said u need me time so................

    I didn't think twice when my cousin asked me to join her, her 4 year old son and parents on a trip to the Mountains.  On Friday we are riding the Polar Express Train, visiting the Cherokee Reservation and then off to see Biltmore Mansion.  This will be a good diversion to keep my mind off my scan on Dec 3rd and I love trains and always wanted to see Biltmore and win win for me. 

    On the way back home we will take her son to the Lego Store, I have officially been appointed the family toy expert ( i love toys).  I am also working on making a custom Monster High School and furniture for my 8 year old niece and her friends to play with.

    I love the Biltmore. I visited everytime I was playing a concert in Western NC during the five years I lived in that state.

    Funny thing is  I have lived in NC my entire life and have never been to Biltmore.

    Biltmore is such a great place. Ive never been there at Christmas though. Ive heard its just beautiful. Im hoping to get there this year too. So far pony hunting has been kind of a dud. Either too big or too expensive. We need an easy keeper.Im hoping to find something soon. I have to admit its the gift that is the most fun to look for...

    Hydeskate, the Biltmore Estate is a fascinating place. I was captivated by the mammoth tapestries there. Just considering how they were made boggled my mind.

    There are some dangerously good craft shops in Biltmore Village, including Bellagio, which specializes in wearable art and jewelry.

    Love the Biltmore! Was just there in May. I would love to see it decorated at Christmas!

    Went to the Biltmore years ago, and the winery. It is beautiful and well worth the entrance fee. I love touring mansions. Last spring we went to Newport RI and toured some of the "summer" homes there! Whew .... The rich really know how to entertain!

    Funny story re: the Biltmore Mansion. Years ago, when my husband and I first toured there, my husband went in to buy our tickets which at that time cost $30 each. When the man in line in front of my husband heard the price for the admission tickets, he said "We don't want to stay here. We just want to visit!"

    On Wednesday, a member of my original September 2005 Chemo Group [http://community.breastcancer.org/forum/69/topic/173545] arrived from abroad. She joined us for Thanksgiving and I have spent the last few days showing her a slice of Boston. Today we are driving to NY State, about 30 minutes north of the City, to meet up with another member of that group. On the way, we will stop in Hyde Park to tour the FDR house and walk the grounds. We will both spend the night before I drive home, and she heads into the City.

    Been a lovely break, though I have fallen behind on my work.

    @Susan,

    Sounds wonderful. A break from work is necessary once in a while. You wll return renewed and reinvigorated!! I loved my visit to Boston!

    Fun Update: We had a lovely, very social Thanksgiving at the Delaware seashore with friends and their friends. The wind picked up and the temperature dropped precipitously on Saturday, to the point where snow was being forecast, so we were glad to be motoring home with the heater cranked up! I do all the driving on long trips, and this one was a lot of heavy-duty highway driving for me for a scant two-day sojourn. We may have to re-evaluate the length of such short trips in the future and extend them a bit to make them worth the drive/train ride/flight.

    Next: Santa Fe for whole week in early December!!!

    Fun update here too: For the first time ever, DH and I packed up the kids last Tuesday and went away for Thanksgiving. Went to Nashville, stayed at the Gaylord Opryland. Saw the Rockettes and Lorrie Morgan; cruised on the General Jackson; toured the antebellum mansions with their beautiful Christmas decorations (not to mention a couple of wineries, complete with tasting); toured the Jack Daniels Distillery in Lynchburg and came home with far too much Gentlemen Jack, Tennessee Honey, and wine; had breakfast with Shrek and Fiona; went to the ICE Experience (spectacular); decorated gingerbread with Gingy from Shrek; ate too much (that I didn't have to cook), drank too much, and laughed until we hurt.

    Isn't Nashville just the greatest place?? Was there in the spring with my sister and her granddaughter. We had tons of fun, ate tons of food, and because of the granddaughter we stalked Taylor swift's condo!! Sounds like you are making wonderful memories!!

    My fun lately has been decorating my home for the holidays.  I will be hosting a few parties in December and I love, love, love having a festive home.  Had a minor setback today (major actually but this thread is about fun things I like to do, not ranting) but will be back on track tomorrow.  So far I have put up 9 trees and still have my largest one yet to go.  My grandchildren love my house because of all the decorations which makes it all worth it.

    Bless you Mary, I remember when chemo had me beat down so badly I had to have a friend put mine up. That could be another helpful idea for cancer patients, like the cleaning for cancer or whatever the name.  A group could go put up trees for the cancer pts cause most hubbys are lost when it comes to putting up the tree.

    I told DH today I was taking pics of all the decorations I've put up and will pack items together with the picture so he'll know how to decorate when I'm not around anymore to do it. For example, the mantle santas all in one box with the lighted garland, timer, and extension cord. I love decorating, too, but can't imagine more than one tree. It took me hours just to get the tree put together with the lights. Then another day, more hours to do the ornaments. Karen, would love to see pics of your trees!

    Well Glenna, when a person has 9 trees, hours can't be spent on ornaments.  LOL  In my bedroom, I have what I call my "Designer Bronze Tree".  In the granddaughter's room is the "Pink Tree", this one is a actual pink tree with pink lights and no ornaments.  Didn't think it needed any.  Then a "Purple Tree" in her bathroom.  Spare bedroom - "Multi Colored", DH study - Multi, he likes the traditional like he had growing up. Dining Room - Red, Kitchen -Green and Bathroom-safari.  Yep, I am just a little OCD. Not all of my trees are large, they range from 3' - 9'.  Oh yea, I fogot, I have a blue tree in the foyer.  Laughing

    I like the idea of someone coming in and doing it for me .... Then I might have more than one! I actually used to have an angel tree with all white lights and angel ornaments but we've downsized and are in a much smaller house so all the ornaments go on one tree. My DH likes colored lights so that's what we do. I'm okay with either as long as we are consistent, that means all colored on the inside (mantle, top of hutch, etc). DH says I'm anal. Possibly. Linda, your trees sound beautiful. Your grands must love coming to your house!

    Lana - what a great trip, loved your Nashville update, especially that you "ate too much, drank too much, and laughed until it hurt", now that's what I call living!!!  Just awesome.

    My son and his fiance, my daughter and MIL came to join my husband and I for Thanksgiving. I don't have both of my kids together too often anymore, as they are both in their 20s, and son lives in northern Ca.  It was a joy just to have them there.  We all played scrabble after dinner, enjoyed seconds of pie and I relished being in their company.

      This weekend my husband has promised he'll go see Lincoln with me and daughter.  I'm glad it's raining here, as he'll be more willing to spend the afternoon in the theater. Little things like this is what I look forward to most these days. And getting stable scans, of course. :)

    Karen, 9 trees!  Must be magnificent.  Wow!

    I'm hoping to get a tree once i'm home and up again.  Hoping for next weekend. I love decorating, although I've scaled down quite a bit since my kids grew up.

    Its going to be a bit tricky this year because I'm moving out dec 28th.  Figure I'll just pack up as I decorate.  It should still work.  My entire family comes for Christmas Eve.  We have a $10 grab bag and its just so much fun.  I can't wait!

    Soleil, your Christmas Eve does sound like fun.  I love playing Dirty Santa at our parties.  Sandilee...glad your whole family was able to be in for Thanksgiving.  Playing those games always makes for a memorable time and the pie just makes it that much better.  We use to play the dvd game Scene It after our dinner, guys against girls.  The most fun game though would have to be Pictionairy......especially some of the horrendous drawings of my dh, bless his heart.

    Sandilee - loved your Thanksgiving update, I could just imagine you playing Scrabble with your adult kids and having 2nds on dessert.  Just lovely, I think that is the image of perfect family in my mind. Thank you for starting this wonderful thread.

    Sometimes if a cashier is rude to me I just peel off my wig in a fit of frustration.  That is fun.

    Or, when someone asks me "What did you do to your hair?"  and I said "Cancer."  That was fun.
