So...whats for dinner?
Comments
-
do stay safe everyone over/up there.
I made home made country style bread with milk, butter and sugar. I think it will turn out all right.. might be too sweet. but then we can slather butter on it.. add some jam.
-
I'm ready. Heating is no problem cuz the gas wood stove works without electricity. I will put my Coleman stove in the mudroom if I have to cook anything. Toilet is gravity flushed so don't need buckets of water. Got all my hurricane lamps out cleaned and filled, flashlights are ready as is my little tea lights, put things away outside that may blow away, should I bring in my wind chimes too?
-
Deb- Sounds like you had a great time last night. We did about the same thing, had some friends over and had a bon fire. I made a pan of mac n cheese and hamburgers everyone ate happily outside and it was easy. There were 10 kids and 10 adults!
Carol- We used to fill the bath tub when I was a kid too
I hope everyone stays safe with this storm and that no one loses power for long. We have access to a generator so it should be ok for us (fingers crossed). But inpreperation I have been making sure all the laundry is done and the house is clean etc. My DH just headed out to get more gas and cash. I am making a roast beef for dinner with the 500 temp meathod so many of us use. If we do lose power I won't be able to use an oven or stove so thought I should cook it tonight just in case. I made a batch of chicken soup today too
Dh has no idea what will happen with work....I really don't want to be alone in the house with the boys if trees are snapping from the wind!! He has been warned if we hit 40mph winds- he must come home
-
We just booked a hotel room for two nights...just in case! Easy to cancel, but not easy to get a room if it ends up being really bad. The problem was where to book, so we decided on Nashua, about 30 minutes from here. Of course, they may not have power, either. Hopefully that area of Nashua will be more stable than our area. And the hotel may have a generator - it's a conference center.
-
Smart move Michelle! We are just hunkering down. I have to be at a client office in the morning, so I will have to go out in the mess.

Auntienance - How were your pork chops and those naughty drunken apples? My pork loin is on baking. Usually do a sage/garlic powder rub. Opted easy way out and sprinkled with KC Masterpiece BBQ seasoning - does say "great for Pork!" Have covered with foil to cook slowly.
-
Kay - I just watched the weather- BE CAREFUL!
-
Deb- Haha on the wind chimes! I forgot to bring my wind chimes in once and there were bits and pieces everywhere and the glass ones were shattered.
Laurie- Thats what scares me the most is the trees during a wind storm too. Yikes!! Good thing you have a generator plus didn't you just buy a wood stove?
Michelle- Thats smart thinking getting a room ahead of time, they will probably be hard to get once the storm starts..
Susan- If the weather is too terrible I hope you cancel on the client. I would be leary of driving in a bad storm.
Dh is getting on my nerves, all i hear on his tv is loud screatching of tires, women screaming, and machine guns going off Im fit to be tied. I walk in the kitchen and he comes over to me and hugs me and says are you mad at me.. Im thinking in my head..Freaking yes im mad, im pissed at the world im angry at everyone including you but instead I smile and say, no why would you think that and give him a kiss and a hug and walk off. LOL! No need to let him know im upset it will just make me feel worse and him too. I just needed to vent!
Everyone is in my prayers I hope you will all be safe and if you have to venture out in the weather drive careful.
-
Kay- I forgot you lived in Philly! I agree with Laurie be careful Looks like a mess there right now.
-
Luv they were excellent, but they must have been New England apples because they weren't very drunken lol.
Please everyone, be safe! -
Auntie, Very funny!
I will go to the client if they are open. They are only a 6 minute drive, and I need the income. Our governor has asked all businesses to close tomorrow, so I won't go in until they confirm that people are actually in the building.
Tonight was a new dish for me- Indian cabbage rolls. First you make a dry cooked lamb mixture with lots of spices. This meat would be what you would get inside a samosa. Then you blanch some cabbage leaves, reserve some for rolling, and shred the rest. To make the sauce you fry some onions, then add tomato, a peeled and sliced lemon, water, salt, pepper and the shredded cabbage. The meat mixture is then rolled inside the cabbage and then the dish is assembled. Bake for an hour, and dinner is served. This was a very unusual set of flavors. Thai chilis, tomato, lemon, the warming spices, and cabbage. I really enjoyed this a lot.
Funny how almost every culture has a cabbage roll dish. Maybe I should write the definitive cabbage roll book. So far, I have made Hungarian, Polish, Indian, and Chinese.

Debbie, vent on dear, you are dealing with a lot!! ((((HUGS))))
Kay and everyone else in mid atlantic and on the coast, be safe!
Deb, you would be good for providing storm prep lessons for those of us who have been a bit negligent. DH and I just finally got our lights lined up. In the past we have been lucky enough to keep our gas heat, hot water, etc, on after " the lights went out", so we are banking on that.....
Hope everyone is able to get through Sandy unscathed! -
Kay, sound like a smart thing! Good luck keeping them in and fairly quiet!
-
I brought in all my halloween decorations. Even the flags.
-
Everyone stay safe!
-
I am a curmudgeon. Nary a decoration to bring inside. However, some of my neighbors must be wildly nervous. The guy on the corner has 16 blowup thingies this year, plus a full house wrap, and a full assortment of statuary. Takes them DAYS to put up.

My daughter in NYC says they closed the subways tonight at 7. she will probably not get to work tomorrow, did not want to drive home though.
We have prepared also got gas for the generator, candles and batteries and put away anything that can "fly"
tonight was chciken alfredo, came out sooo good. Sometimes I just get lucky ha ha
-
that is me in the middle next to the cowboy on black ( my DH) costume party to raise money for BC
-
carrie- What a cute picture! Looks like you are all having fun!
-
Well we are as ready as we're going to be here, too! Porch furniture put away (as well as anything else that could become air born). Leaves cleared from the paths to the storm drains. Staple groceries and batteries bought and cars gassed up...
Looks like here in central NY the issue will not be the flooding this time (although that was what was said last big storm and we had a 500 year flood event) but more likely the wind and wide-spread power outages...No generator here so if power goes for any length of time we will have a problem...
To all in the path of this storm.... May we all be safe and come through unscathed! -
Carrie you look awesome!!!! Thanks for sharing the picture- love it!
It sounds like we are all preparing (and eating) as best we can. My son just had his first school cancellation for tomorrow. Looks like I will have to look in my bag of tricks to see if I can keep them entertained. If it's not too bad I may go hit the craft store first thing in the morning with them.
-
Thinking of you all in the path of Sandy - stay safe !
-
Carrie, great photo! You look stunning!
Sorry for your screwed up travel plans, Joyce. Hope plan B works!
Feels like the middle of winter with the constant focus and reports on weather concerns.
Laurie, wish you were closer...... I have a slew of rocks to be painted, glued to make animal paperweights, etc...tho I need to get the paints so I'd be off to the craft store also.Have fun doing crafts with he boys!
-
Thinking of those in the path of Sandy. Stay safe and comfortable. Hurricanes are a big nuisance, in addition to all the danger and expense.
-
STAY SAFE EVERYONE IN SANDY'S PATH! Woke up to high winds and cold weather here in the mountains! Not a leaf left on the trees..LOL! Power was off at sometime during the night but came back on. Time to head to the tropics....leaving tomorrow....hopefully we will have good driving weather and if not, we will drive by way of Atlanta v down the coast.
Starting to look forward to getting back to a warmer climate. There is always lots to do in Florida and friends that I haven't seen in a long while....not to mention the kids and grand kids.
I think I'll make a big pot of chili with the organic hamburger meat that I have thawed. It seems appropriate on a day like this and I can freeze the rest for another time. It will keep over the winter in the freezer.
Have a good day everyone and again...stay safe!
-
Keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers! And Bedo havn't heard from you in awhile hope you are safe where you live too!
-
It's getting wild out here - lots of wind, not too much rain - more like a driving heavy mist. Our power has flickered a couple of times. I'm guessing it's just a matter of time before we go dark!
Check this out
This is the scene on a street in Milford, CT
-
OMG Michelle! I'm just glad that wasn't your neighborhood! The wind and sideways rain is brutal here, and it's still just the beginning....tho nothing like on the coast. Mother Nature clearly feels she has been ignored with all the mild weather served up this summer!
Yikes, MSNBC has a shot of a crane atop a building in mid town Manhattan collapsing with the wind.
I worry about my sister in South Jersey who lives alone with her two dogs in a low lying area. Oy!
Got two different varieties of kale soup going on the stovetop....one with lentils and balsamic, one with cannelini beans italian spices and a sausage I picked up at Traders.
Our Traders expanded into additional space, so I have to learn the store once again...tho it's easier to get down the aisles.:)
Last night made seared scallops we got from the Farmer's Market fish monger (land and sea marketserved with roasted veggies over wild rice along with fresh arugula salad. Yummy! Last day of our Farmer's Market so will be on the hunt for some good vegetables and fish this winter.
Be safe everyone! -
Oh, forgot to mention...love your new image, Michelle!
-
Man would I be irritated if I lost power because someone didn't secure their trampoline! The winds at our house have already hit 60mph. The mayor just called [automated call] and said we are now expecting winds between 80-100 mph late tonight. Already have water coming in via the chimney seams. Long standing problem when we get winds off the ocean with water.
Bread is rising, but slowly. I hope we can eat before 10pm!
