Really glad you Philly girls got off easy, you just never know what these storms can do.

Michelle You do have an amazing head of hair.  Once mine got to my shoulders the curl subsided and I just have an annoying flip on the ends, but it is so much healthier than before, not using anymore hair dye...I color with henna now and love the different color strands that I get.

Yes Bedo...come out wherever you are!  Hope you are ok, we worry. Please check in when you can to let us know you are ok.

So for candy I bought the little caramels with the white cream center...mmmm...my favorite and some foil wrapped chocolate in the bulk section

My husband forgot to take out the chicken stew from the freezer tonight, so we used a Groupon I bought months ago. This place has been in Somerville for years. It used to be that you walked in and it was a convenience store, then through the back door, and there was a full dining room. They have removed the convenience store and created a "sub" shop, and opened the room up so the dining room is visible from the front. Now called Vinnys At Night, this spot specializes in HUGE Italian food. We started by sharing an Arancini and a bowl of lentil & pasta fagioli soup. These turned out to be the highlight of the meal. The Arancini was perfectly fried, and in addition to the cheese, there were mushrooms and peas. The soup was really good. The lentils were soft, but not mushy. The pasta was their homemade fusilli. There was a spicy undertone that I particularly enjoyed.

He ordered veal parmegiana and I ordered veal picatta. Each dish was served with at least a half pound of fresh, homemade ribbon pasta. The veal wasn't pounded in either dish. His two tomato sauces were very well made. My sauce had TONS of butter, but the capers were really good-quality. We each ate about 1/3 of our plates. Just way too much food.

Husband stated, without being critical, that this meal proves that my cooking has come a long way. We will get one more meal from the leftovers, and anything leftover after that will get tossed. Turns out we can buy both the Arancini and soup to go, any time of day. I expect that soup will find its way into our house regularly.

Susan, sounds like a great meal .....made possible by a fortuitous error! I'll look for that spot to show up on Groupon again. I do hear there are some very good restaurants in your neighborhood...lucky you!

My sister in South Jersey never lost power, but DS1and family did in North Jersey. They were told it would be out at least a week so he set up a generator today....mainly, I think so he wouldn't miss the Celtics opener tonight!

Morning everyone:  We're safely back in Florida...drove all day yesterday...great weather, and no truck traffic on the road.  It was 12 hours door to door.  We hit sunshine at Savanna and the weather got warmer.  When we arrived home it was 67 degrees!  We ate at the local italian restaurant.

Looking forward to a beautiful winter season here!

So sad about all the devistation in the NE.  Glad everyone on here got through safely...what a job to do cleanup.  This weather is certainly testing our infrastructure.

Glad everyone made it through the storm with no major mishaps.  Here in the NW we've had rain, rain and more rain - but nothing like Sandy!!!

Dessert was coconut cream hand pies. My oh my I love pie. What I love more is having someone cook for me for a change. Yes!!

Sounds like everyone is enjoying great food!  Susan- I drooled a little with your Italian food post.

Last night we had pork chops and gravy- the night of the storm DH made us chicken parm which was fantastic, can't remember the last time he cooked for ME!  He did it because he didn't want pot pie- go figure?

So tonight is Halloween- oh the sugar high that is soon on the way for the boys!  We are going to our neighbors house for all the kids to group up around 5 and heading out for as long as the kids last.  I am going to make them a box of Annies mac n cheese around 4 so they will at least have a base of whole wheat mac n cheese in their bellies to make for a cushion for the candy they will consume.

At DS school they are having a Halloween party on Friday.  They had a sign up sheet for different snacks to bring.  All of them were taken except one- cookies or cup cakes : /  Now- those of you that know me know I am a crappy baker.  I signed up for it and went on line looking for cute ideas and found a great idea that requires string licorice for spider legs.  I called DH to see if he would stop at a candy store for me and buy some.  He laughed and I quote" really- you are going to make and decorate 2 dozen cup cakes?  Like spiders?  (laughing)  spare yourself the heart ache and buy them and put them on a pretty plate!"  I have to admit....he may be right here....

    Happy Halloween everyone!!

For healthy bug things.....cut an apple in half, put the flat side on a piece of lettuce, use a nail to push dents into the apple and put raisins in the dents. Then put a cut in half grape where the apple stem is at for a head.

    Instant ladybug.

Laurie.  Awww come on, you can do a cupcake, and use store bought frosting right?  I am not a good cookie maker (except cutouts)  It is also cute to bake the cupcakes in ice cream cones (no they dont burn) and frost.

Going to a pub for 10$ steak night tonight

I get so jealous when you guys talk about your men cooking for you...never happened here  Next time around I will interview my potential husband better before marrying. He should also be able to build something, so I can watch him wear a toolbelt!! LOL

When I left England - 12 years ago - Halloween wasn't celebrated.   We used to celebrate Guy Fawkes Night on November 5.   According to my family, Halloween is becoming more popular.  Don really get many trick or treaters here... houses are spaced apart... long driveways and with tonights rain and us going out for wings and beer - think me and DH will be eating the candy.Smile

Laurie, cupcakes are easy.  Frost them with bought frosting and use candy corn to make a face.  This is not a contest!  But buying some cupcakes might be the way to go.  All the supermarket bakeries around here have baked goods for every holiday.

No candy at this house.  We won't turn on the light, but even when we bought the candy and turned on the light, nobody came.  Houses spaced far apart and a long driveway.  Besides which, I'm not crazy about the idea of giving kids a lot of sugary candy.

Picked up the CSA veggies.  I haven't used all of last week's supply.  With two people and one of them cutting back on portions, we don't consume a lot of food.

Tonight's dinner will be left-over lima beans w/sausage and brown rice, salad and maybe a veggie, green beans or sauteed squash.

Last night's veggie lasagne was not to die for.  A lot left over since it was a sizable pan.  I think I'll divide it into portions and freeze it.

    Safe travel, Joyce.

If you cut a banana in half along its length and put the flat side down, then cut the 1/2 banana into several lengths.

Cut an apple in half the traditional way, then cut slices out of the halves so you end up with a bunch of thin half circle shaped pieces of apple.

Lay the pieces out..banana, apple, banana, apple, banana and so forth.

Add some raisins for eyes and you have a worm.

I think I will catch up in the CSA stuff. Because of the storm, we're not getting a delivery this week. They say they will just give us more the rest of the weeks. We'll see.

We don't get many trick or treaters either. The houses are a little far apart, we are on a cul de sac, and a hill. But I have candy so hopefully we'll get a few. We have about 8 kids on the street so I am pretty sure we'll get those kids. And my DD is trick or treating with a group of about 8, so we'll get those. And maybe a few others. We'll see.

It's a shame, her school has been closed since last Friday, and now school will reopen ing tomorrow. Just having a turkey sandwich tonight so I won't be interrupted by the trick or treaters trying to cook. Enjoy the night everyone.

I am behind on posts, but is Laurie asking for Halloween treat ideas? The most I ever did was make cupcakes from a mix and put a candy corn face on them. I think the kids always loved them though. Lots of good tips now a days on pin interest. I follow KISS though (keep it simple stupid, I just don't lie the stupid part).

The little goblins are coming tonight...I bought candy and intend to give it all away!  Bought some dark chocolate small hershey bars for us...hehe!

I'm making cornish hens for dinner with stuffing, green peas and a salad.  I'll serve it on the screened porch at sunset.  The weather is awesome here!

    Glad everyone survived the storm!

Our trick or treat was Sat, gave 10 bags away, two little candy bars to each. So at least 80 kids. As you see my avatar I dress up! LOL.

Laurie, my son loved these: mix equal parts peanut butter, dry milk and honey. Mix, it should feel and look like play dough. Roll into balls. Then, decorate with chowmein noodles for legs, raisens for eyes. Or just roll in nuts or sprinkles. You can also dip in chocolate. A little nutrition in this treat! And, no baking, takes only a couple minutes to mix up. You can make these ahead, they actually taste better later. I used to let the kids at school decorate them by themselves. I would give each child a small zip bag of a couple of chowmein noodles and raisens But you might have to check about peanut butter allergies.

No trick or treating in our town any more.  We have no sidewalks, no street lights, almost half the lots are vacant, most unimproved, and a large percentage of the houses are vacation homes.  About twenty years ago the City passed an ordinance banning trick or treating and the Police and Fire Association started sponsoring an all city party at the Convention Center on Oct. 31.  Most of the businesses and a lot of the non-profit groups set up and decorate booths where they have games and hand out treats.  Adults and kids dress up and every one has a great time.  Most importand, the kids are safe.

    Debbie,

Thanks so much for thinking of me!

We came through the storm without so much as a power outage at our house (central NY).... Although we are now the proud owners of 2 new battery operated lanterns, a bunch of D Batteries, a couple of cases of water and a full propane tank for the grill.... lol

Wish the rest of those closer to the coast in NY, NJ and DE would have fared as well..... What a mess!

Our area had an absolutely devastating flood last year due to the remnants of hurricane Lee and areas around us got pounded by Isaac 2 weeks before Lee...Not sure we could have withstood another flood when so many are still not back in their homes from the last round!

My heart goes out to those in the areas that were so severely affected by Sandy....

Hope you all had a nice Halloween!

Moon- Your halloween costume is cute!

Deb- Glad you got your power back on and that you are OK.

Seaside- So glad you checked in too! You got lucky you didn't have problems especially living where you live. At least you have lots of back-up now in case you need it LOL! I agree my heart goes out to all those who were effected by the storms.

It is 3 am just got home we went to the casino (not where DH works) we played bingo when we got there and I won a 500.00 bingo that lasted about 2 hours then went and played the slots I didn't do good on those but DH won about 300.00 so it was a pretty good night had fun but it is late and Im tired ;-))

Kudos Debbie on the big win!

Seaside  Yes we really did get lucky on this storm.  We have a store and we have completely sold out of generators and batteries, flashlights, lamp oil etc.  We are getting calls from NJ for generators...my poor DH is having a hard time keeping up with the demand as he can only get so many, wish we could get them to NYC, although you have to run them outside, will not help the people in high rises.

Went for the steak last night, but then changed my mind and had the seafood chowder with garlic toast.  the soup was way too salty, had to drink about 3 glasses of water before bed

Tonight doing roasted red pepper soup with rueben sandwiches.

I finished my last herceptin Aug 1st, and got my port out the next week, yay!!! since then I have had two bad colds, a broken toe, and a tweeked knee. (hello body? havent you been through enough this past year and a half)

anyway, I recently discovered I can eat and enjoy salmon. I coat a fillet in olive oil, and sprinkle some garlic salt on it, and broil it on a cookie sheet on low for 10 min., then on high for 3 min, so delicious. Now I can get the healthy omega from another source besides walnuts and flax seed :O)

Making a pork roast dinner at the Senior Center for lunch today.  DH and will dine on left overs tonight.  Bought six big roasts at $1.29 a pound a couple of months ago.  Each one is big enough for me to get two lunches out of it.  Once a month I've been splurging on roast pork for lunch.  Normally I try to keep the cost of the food at about a $1.25 per serving.

Halloween was a relative non-event last night. We had about ten trick or treaters in total. DH getscso excited about giving out candy and guessing the kids costumes, so hecwas pretty disappointed with the paltry show. Then on the late news we saw that some neighborhoods in our town had lots of trees down, so parents were not letting kids go door to door for safety reasons.

My DDIL let us know that their power is back on now in their North Jersey town, earlier than expected.

    Glad yours is back, Deb.

DH's extended family lives in the Jersey shore area, have no power, and describe the terrible devastation there. Very sad. I grew up spending summers on the Jersey which will never be the same. And NYC....Yikes! Anyone know someone who is going there to run the Marathon this weekend?

Last night, while hopefully awaiting for trick or treaters, we had kale lentil soup and a little sandwich concoction....a poached egg on toasted sour dough bread (brushed with evoo and balsamic)with arugula and blue cheese. DH really liked it....I'm not so sure. Saw the recipe idea on the internet.

zumbagirl:  Congratulations on having your last herceptin treatment!  Sorry about your other issues, but smooth sailing ahead I hope!

We had a fair amount of goblins last night, but didn't give out all the candy...darn!  Now it will be sitting around to tempt me, but I got snickers, and I don't like them that much.

Went to our gym for a workout this morning...good to be back on our routine...I fell short in NC this summer...too many distractions!  Now I'm getting ready to go down to the pool for a little Vitamin D!  It's a beautiful day...temps in the high 70's...perfect pool weather!

Zumbagirl  I feel the same way, my body is just rebelling in so many different ways that I never had before.

Talked with my daughter in NYC  She is going to atempt to get to her office, even though there is no power.  She will have to use a taxi and have at least three people in car. Her office is in lower Manhattan (soho) where the devestation was its worse. She is in fashion and production of buttons and trim...so if your clothes dont have any buttons next year remember "Sandy"  Her boss may just fly to Hong Kong to handle things personally.

    Eric 77deg :)

Kaara  Enjoy that pool.  I am looking into swimming at the YMCA this winter...my favorite non-impact workout...if I can afford the price.
