Debbie: So sorry your DH is not doing well right now. Hopefully he will get better and can return to work soon. They usually have to hold the job open or offer him another position for at least ninety days.
Michelle: Your plate is really full right now...how much can one person be expected to bear. Please take care of yourself.

Debbie so sorry your husband is not feeling well. dont be so sure he cant be fired...make sure you check the fine print...they "let me go" because I was out too long for treatments....I knew there was a time limit so I worked all through chemo...sick as a dog, and with kids that were always sick....but anyways my surgeries kept me out too long and I was let go. sometimes things happen for a reason, though.
My DH is at the point where he is talking of selling our business and retiring..and I am in panick mode, as I dont know what I will do with him around all the time...besides the obvious (kill him)
Debbie Alone time!...priceless. Me and the girlfriends are planning a trip to NYC, always said we would do this when I got done with treatment....well a year and half later we are finally getting around to it. One of the friends husbands is having a fit and saying that he doesnt think his wife can go..she works and has her own money wo what the heck is his problem? Hope she stands up to him and tells him she is going anyways. We will visit my daughter and she will be our tour guide. Girls gone wild!! ha ha
Halloween party tonight, so I will make a pot of soup and we will have a mid day lunch. Have a big loaf of "everything" bread (like the bagels with the seasoning on top) and have grilled ham and cheese sandwiches.

Auntienance - OHH Drunken Apples sounds good. Having a pork loin tomorrow. Sounds good with it. Freezer is just stuffed and trying to use some things up. Googled recipe and found with rum or bourbon both of which I have. Sometimes looks like we own a bar in "that" cabinet. Which do you plan on using? Share???
Very cold this morning. Pulled houseplants up next to house and wrapped with fabric cloth. Out in the country where it is significantly colder. But forecast back in the 80s by week's end. Hate to bring them in yet. Hope my tomatoes and figs didn't freeze. Think it was just a couple degrees warmer than they predicted - and yet another cold one tonight.

5 large honeycrisp apples, peeled, cored and sliced
2 Tbs. Butter
1/4 cup sugar
1Tbs. brown sugar
1tsp. Cinnamon
1/8 tsp. Nutmeg
2 Tbs. Rum
1/4 cup water
1tsp. cornstarch
1 Tbs. fresh lemon juice
Melt butter in medium saucepan over medium heat. Add apples, a pinch of salt, and remaining ingredients, stirring to combine. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to medium low and simmer until apples are almost tender, about 5 minutes. In a small bowl, dissolve cornstarch in lemon juice. Add to apple mixture. Simmer until thickened, about 2 minutes longer. Set side and keep warm. Serve with pork.

My aunt, my mother's older sister, is as JoyceK can attest, a bitch. She was unhappy that we had to pick her up (instead of my sister) and we had arranged to get her at 10:15 for the service at 11:00. We had to provide the name of the driver, make and model of the car that would be going into the lockdown area to fetch her and her sister. So since I am not familiar with my sister's car, I gave the Obama folks our car information, figuring we'd pick them both up and take them to the church. Well, she got a hair across her a$$ and decided she didn't like those arrangements, so she decided not to attend the funeral mass. There was no convincing her otherwise - she is the most stubborn human being I know, who doesn't care that she is hurting me, my sister, her sister, and herself. She'd rather cut off her nose to spite her face. So, she didn't go. Unbelievable! She is a miserable human being!

Michelle, In a word, I am horrifed. I hope that your popcorn has tons of butter and that you have some sloppy sweatpants on. I have no idea if this woman will ever care, but that truly isn't your concern. Toxic people just make the world a worse place.
Auntie, we can only hope that your apples a giggling in glee as they are served over your chops.
My husband's client stayed until 7pm, a full two hours, so my thawed lamb went back into the fridge and we went to Five Guys. Husband wanted a burger. I will make the Turkish Koftas [seasoned lamb] with tomato and yogurt sauce tomorrow.
Hand is getting better, but still can't mince onions. Maybe tomorrow.

My younger brother came from Atlanta this weekend to visit our mother. I went to her house this afternoon and made chicken and sausage gumbo and potato salad for supper. My dh joined us after he had finished playing in a golf tournament. I had a small bowl of gumbo over rice and a moderate helping of potato salad. The food was so-o-o-o delicious, if I do say so. I haven't had gumbo or potato salad in a long time and the cool weather today was perfect for comfort food.
Tomorrow will be another food challenge as my mother is cooking a beef roast AND a pork roast in two slow cookers. My youngest sister will make mashed potatoes with cream cheese one of the ingredients. I'll cook green beans and make a tossed salad. And, yes, there will be gravy with the roasts.
Monday morning is my WW weigh-in!
Wish the storm would fool all the meteorologists and turn out to sea. I'd like to see Jim Cantori standing on the beach looking puzzled because the wind wasn't blowing.

Why is it that there is frequently one borderline relative who just cannot allow the family task to get done without making sure that his.... usually her,.... need for attention and entitlement is totally met by being miserable to everyone in her path. Oy! We would have had a similar situation with one of my mother's relatives, but there was no way she would risk missing the food at the repast.
Just think of the perverse satisfaction your aunt gets to have in feeling that you all deprived her of today's services. It was obviously just too hard for her to say good-bye to her little sister.....even tho you did your best to help her do that.

Funerals always seem to bring the worst out of some people. It's probably better she wasn't there.

Michelle- OMG! You certainly didn't need that! Some people are just "Cranky" in there old age! I'm glad you were able to get there though and im sure it was a very hard day. Hope you are able to get a good nights sleep.
Kaara and Carrie- Yes it does have me abit concerned they are an indian casino and usually get away with things that other bussiness can't. But they do have FMLA Chuck may end up having the brain surgery (what he was trying to avoid with the gamma knife) he said he will do anything to not feel this way, but that surgery alone will put him out for several months I hear.
Joyce- Tell us how you really feel LMAO! between the killing of the F,,,king elephant and the aunt burning in hell, shit they don't stand a chance. hehe! Im right there with ya though!
Nancy- Finally made the minestrone today! It was really good. The only thing different i did was doubled the recipe and added a large can of whole peeled tomatoes, some broccoli (that i steamed then chopped up) and par boiled a diced up potatoe. Used canned cut green beans instead of frozen. I added some leftover peas i had in the fridge but just in my bowl as Dh does not like them. Put a parme/reggino rind in and lots of parmesan cheese, Dh loved it. I made some delicious corn bread to go with it. I have enough for the next 3 or 4 nights! Yay!!
Carole- I agree wouldn't that be great if they were all wrong on the weather. I remember living in hawaii and we were supposed to get a tsnami DH and I watched up on the 15th floor of our conod and all there was, was a ripple. It was funny! but glad it turned out that way of course.
Hope everyone is stocked up on radio's, batteries lots of food and water and flash lights. but you are all probably pros in this by now and have all that stuff already. Keep safe everyone!

Oh good grief, Michelle! I swear every family has to have 'the one' that just has to cause a problem but you would think she could have just sucked it up for her sister's funeral for goodness sake!!! For some people it is more important to 'be right' than to 'do the right thing'! She will eventually regret her decision!
Maybe she figured she didn't need the ride and could fly in on her broom instead..lol! -

My MIL is doing better. It is looking like she might remain in hospice for a while. Not easy on anyone, everyone will have to fly home, or go back to work, or school this week. MIL obviously has her own timetable! LOL -
Holy Moly, I could not believe what I was reading so I read it to DH. Her own sister? WTF is wrong with her. I'm so sorry Michelle.
DH and I went over to friends of ours, had Chinese food, brought over some wedding pics had some wine, then went outside and sat by the campfire, I love that smell, DH play some tunes on his 12 string, left at 11:00. Had a nice time.

I got a good night's sleep and I am feeling better this morning. I guess I'd better hit the grocery store and pick up a couple bundles of wood. We will surely lose power, there is a 100% track record since we moved in. DH says we'll go to a hotel if we lose power, but we might have a hard time figuring out what direction to head, the storm is so large! And we need to bring in a bucket of water for toilet flushing. No power - no well water - no toilets! We will move out quickly if the power is out for very long. DH does need to store the patio furniture today so it doesn't end up in the lake...lol!
I could have used a few days without excitement but it's not to be.

Michelle, here in the south we always fill up the bathtub with water for flushing the toilet. Hope you don't lose power. It's important not to open the freezer when the power is off. Do you have a portable generator that will run the refrigerator?
It's expensive, but people who can afford it have installed all-house generators that run on natural gas. They self-test once a month. The moment the power goes off, the generator turns on. One of our neighbors installed one after Katrina.

Wow, so much going on in this thread. I have a female PS, and I just love her. Michelle, I forgot about her, she makes me feel tall. That cartoon is so true (not in your case Eric). And so funny. Deborye, I hope you're feeling better. Been there, done that. Getting away on your own would do you a world of good. And you might even be more appreciated when you come back.

Haven't been cooking much because our sink keeps leaking. A plumber is supposed to come Monday to fix it. I hope he makes it with the storm. It looks like we will be hit hard. My house isn't in danger of flooding, but my work is. And of course we could end up without power for quite a while. We took everything in from outside and are as prepared as we can be. Will just have to ride it out. I have a feeling I'll getting a call that school will be closed on Monday.
Went to iron hill brewery for dinner last night. DH and I shared a flight of eight seasonal brews and a an order of nachos. He also had a salad, and I had seafood bisque. Fun and Yum! -
Good idea about filling the bathtub tomorro after showers. We thought about it the first time the power went out from a storm. The next storm, I thought about it, but the power went out about 30 minutes after the storm started. Too late...lol! DH is going to get gas,cash and pick up a couple bundles of wood. The patio furniture is all safely stored away, and DH parked his car in front of our dumpsters.
Now we are going to sit in our chairs, watch football and eat chicken wings and apple pie...lol!

Hoping everyone in the path of the storm remains safe. When the power goes off here, I have a couple of led fake candles. They don't give much light, but I put them in the bathroom, in the stairs, by the sink, etc. Just to help find your way around the house. And, because they are LED, they last a long time, even if on continuously.

Just got a call from my DD's school, they're closed Monday and Tuesday. It is the smart thing to do.

Poor working mothers... scrambling for child care as a storm approaches. I always found school closures to be problematic. At least I was the CEO and could bring the kid to work.

Job 3 is with US Dept of Health & Human Services. I'm the head tech geek for what is essentially a portable hospital emergency department.
I'm not on call this month...but I still watch stuff like this.
Be careful, please.
Chrissy got 8th place out of 16. She was the only freshman in the race. She beat her year end goal time by almost a minute so her school coach was quite pleased....
Thanks for the vote of confidence about not being like the guy in the cartoon. The last time I had the flu, I was pretty well "shot" for a couple of days. So the cartoon is not that inaccurate. :-)

Susan, I used to hate when school closed for that reason, but I have a feeling a lot of work places will be closed too. The state declared a state of emergency yesterday anticipating the storm. I think it makes it easier to get help in if it's needed. The worst that will happen to me is loss of power. My DH has it harder. He has to go to work tomorrow morning, and they've made arrangements that he can sleep there if he can't get home. He works for the hospital. I may be home alone for several days with no power. We shall see. I have two sisters and a brother who don't live far, so I may head over there just for company in a lull if I lose power. I will put safety first though. I am taking this seriously.

With laptops and home networks, there are some situations where it's a little easier than it used to be. I worked but didn't have the advantage of working at home, so finding childcare was always a challenge on snow days. I managed a group the last few years I worked, and they could be completely productive with their laptops and a network connection to our intranet.
