So today I got into the religion talk with one of my coworkers. She is an Evangelical. I asked what she thought of mormonism. Curtly she said "a cult." (Personally, I do not discriminate between religions, but that's another issue.) I know she is a Conservative, maybe even a Tealiban, so I just point blank asked her if she was voting for Romney and she said "No." Not that she is voting for Obama either, though she did say "Obama will win and I've known that for a year." Probably because she knows Romney wouldn't have the vote of any other Evangelical.
Windows opening on Anne's plane - brilliant idea! Suzie....only one wife and they are "sealed" for eternity.
-
Love the fact that Mitt doesn't know about windows on an airplane.
Did anyone catch that Tommy Thompson in Wisconsin is on tape saying that he wants to end Medicare and Medicaid? It's so wonderful to think what technology has done: no longer can politicans say things behind closed doors and be sure that they stay there.
I'm bouncing back after that letter. It's not so much that I wanted the job, it's the feeling of being unwanted and unnecessary. I don't think I'm likely to get a job, given the market for lawyers and my age. So I'll just come up with my own job. And besides the best revenge is making fun of the whole department in the novel.
All of you are the best!! I am so glad to be part of this community.
-
alexandria58,
You are wanted and very necessary to all of us. I look forward to reading any novel you write.

-
What notself said!
Watching Rachel Maddow. I love her wit!
-
You are necessary and wanted by US, Alexandria. We are more important and more fun than any old stuffy law firm. And besides, we will think of something good for you to do. Writing is better anyway ... You can create your own fun world where YOUR rules apply. Although I know characters have something to say about that eventually, once they gang up and start bossing YOU around!
Opening windows on an airplane ... It would be one way of taking care of the Willard problem. DH kept insisting that it MUST have been a quote taken out of context. He loathes Willard -- he just didn't want to believe anyone was that clueless.

ETA: Was typing while notself & Athena were posting. Great minds & all that! -
I just saw the video. He was joking!
-
::crickets::
-
That Romney! What a card!
-
Sounds like something I would say.
Alexandria...I didn't see your post before you deleted it but I'm so sorry about the job. They don't know what they're missing! -
Everybody gone to bed already?
Enjoyful ... I've seen a gazillion mentions of the airplane window thing but I can't find a video of it. You got a link to the video? I certainly hope he was joking!
Kam ... it seems like the Evangelicals have been pushed back into a small dark corner and ignored this time around. Wondered how they were taking it.
ETA ... never mind I found a video of the remark. It was weird actually in the context of talking about the scare his wife had. But I do think he was going for a laugh.

The three presidential debates will have an impact on this election. Some talking heads say debates don't matter, but I think these will be the exception. Independents will use them to make a determination on who to vote for and the quality of the responses will effect turn out.
Quite frankly, we should have a weekly debate from the time the nominations are made at the conventions; no ads, no TV show appearances, just weekly debates dedicated to one or two topics per debate.
-
I agree, notself. I like the way you think.
-
Well, I have to say I'm relieved that Romney was (trying to make) a joke, cuz it's unimaginable that a presidential candidate could really be that stupid! On the other hand, given how the GOP renounces many scientific acheivements......
Notself, I think your idea is admirable, although think of all the revenues TV stations would lose, and given that they are all owned by a very few major corporations, it'll never happen.
One of the researchers (Dr. Steven Narod, a Canadian) who discovered the BCRA 1 and 2 genes acknowleged the significant financial support of the U.S. Army in his research. I think many people would be amazed by the great number of scientific advancements and inventions -- in medicine, in engineering, and in so many other disciplines -- that have only been made possible by government investment. I wish more emphasis would be given to this really important fact, especially for all the folks who resent paying taxes.
Night all!
-
'Morning, all.
Poor Mitt - if he really was joking his reputation as a tin man is so bad that it didn't easily come across. I saw the video. I will take it on faith that he was joking, as he is an intelligent, educated man, and so common sense should dictate that he knows about airplanes.
I don't think the debates will matter much - remember that early voting has already begun. They seem to matter less and less as time goes by. Kerry won all three presidential debates and lost the election. Americans were intent on electing a goon. Last time around, the debates played no role, really - McCain's missteps and Obama's extraordinary appeal did.
If the debates were earlier on they might make a difference.
I am looking forward to the Biden-Ryan debate - that should be fun. A liar versus one of the most earnest politicians today in a face off.
-
...and now for coffee....
-
Just got home from a yummy dinner out to celebrate my birthday yesterday - now I really feel fat

-
We, the Official members of the Alexandria Admiration Society hereby do vow and promise to sell the dickens out of anything she writes. ( can you hear me yelling, SO THERE! at the end of that sentence
) Really think this job thing will turn out to be a Blessing sort of thing...Willard, wonder what skin color he'll have for the debates? After all, they ARE televised - this stuff he's wearing, trying to be orangeier than John Boehner is for PUBLIC appearances - not TV, relly, speaking of a human being NOT BEING COMFORTABLE IN HIS OWN SKIN....I mean, you can't make this stuff up ( almost a pun)
Happy Today everyone....special HUGS to Alexandria ( until she gets her fighting spirit back,) and Scoot - we're waiting for B9.
-
Raising my cup of coffee to all of you.
Suzie - don't you know that you can't gain weight from birthday dinners.
I do think debates can matter. Thinking Reagan and Carter, Nixon and Kennedy. My concern with this one is not that Romney can outperform Obama but that, because the bar for him is now so low, that if Romney gets on the stage and doesn't trip over his shoelaces, all the commentators will be saying, oh look how much better he did than we were expecting, he can look presidential. And basically, he's just going to have a series of memorized speeches that he'll recite that sort of vaguely correspond to whatever the question might be.
-
disagree - al the stuff I'm hearing is how GOOD Willard is in debates - per his "performance" in the primaries. I also not how eveyone who EVER worked with him on political stuff, ran against him, REALLY DOES NOT LIKE HIM. there is no cordiality in his "camp." Several commentators talking about how he leaves "scorched earth" where ever he goes..
-
Debates used to matter way back when....not any more, and not in an election this settled and with a party so bereft of ideas. Romney has no policy ideas he can be specific on. The only thing he knows how to do is state vague principles. Where there are plans and ideas - Ryan's -- they are disasters that cannot be repeated on prime time. Voting in many swing states has already begun.
-
I watched some of those debates in the primary seasons - or at least a small portion as replayed on MSNBC or Jon Stewart - because I couldn't stand to actually watch the whole thing. Romney did put his silver foot in his mouth a number of times -("I can't have illegals do my yardwork, I'm running for office for Pete's sake") , but he also had some error free performances. He's just been screwing up so much lately, I don't know where the bar is for him.
My husband made up a teeshirt for me with a picture of some cute puppies. In French it says, No Car Roofs, Dogs against Romney.
Going for more coffee.
-
OK, I will allow that Willard may have been joking. Was probably joking. But it is a saaaaad commentary on how inept his campaign has been that people would think that he wasn't joking. And it is a saaaad commentary that so many articles written about his campaign or the things he says have to be prefaced by "This is not an Onion article."
Susie, Alexandria is correct - birthday dinners are always calorie-free.
Early voting has indeed begun in many states. It began in Virginia last Friday. Virginia technically does not have "early voting," but people can vote absentee if they are going to be out of the county that day ... Even if you work in another county right next door. Or if you think you might be out of the county. They interpret that law in a very forgiving manner.
I'm not sure whether the debates will really affect anything. Support has already hardened for both candidates, and Willard is so personally unlikeable that I don't think that extemporaneous speaking will do him any favors. He is bad enough when scripted (that revolting smirk when reading his completely inappropriate statement trying to take advantage of the murder of the U.S. Ambassador to Libya is a case in point). He is so completely out of touch with people who are struggling in life that he cannot find any common ground to connect. And Willard has said repeatedly that he won't reveal any details of his policies until after the election. (and the right hammered Nancy Pelosi for explaining that the ACA had to be passed before we would know what was in it ... Because people would attach amendments to it at the last minute!)
The President was a lawyer and a law professor -- he is used to speaking off-the-cuff and explaining things ('splainin' stuff!).
It will be interesting. I couldn't bear to watch any of the Republican debates ... The highlights reported later were quite enough. These debates are on past my bedtime, so I will just read the transcripts the next day. Less chance of throwing things at the TV, too.

Sunflowers: didn't see your wonderful post promising to sell the dickens out of anything I write. Bless you. I'm feeling so much better this morning with your support and the support of all thse wonderful people here.
I'm hoping that this will be a blessing not in disguise for too long, anyway. Maybe this novel will be the one!
-
I say it's a blessing in very little disguise.
I didn't see the letter, but from the way they treated you, you definitely dodged a bullet. -
Athena - I stand by my opinion the interviewers were JEALOUS of Alexandria's leaving - with NO empathy for her having bc, and her being able ( married, settled) to start out on her own...Bitchy Bureauocrats, we've all had to deal with that mentality in Fed/State levels - sad, but true. Very much a "gang mentality" - don't get me started on the political parties in MA -brrrrrr.....
re: Debates - Willard is probably just praying for a "take away" line - like his GREAT off the cuff to Rick Perry:" I'll bet you $10,000.00 ( that's ten thousand) dollars....one of my favorites. And then there's the response to what do you drive: "my wife has a couple of Cadillacs." And, then, "some of my friends are NASCAR team owners." And of course, the best of the best - INSULTING THE BRITISH ON THE EVE OF THE OLYMPICS when he was in London.
Silver SHOVEL in his mouth.
-
Count me in as thinking there is little redemption in debates or otherwise for Romney. Morning Joe was very tough about this on MTP Sunday. So many in the GOP camp are being very, very candid at this point, but it is too little, too late. Every big gaffe brought on a change of focus. I also believe as earlier stated.....you can't tell when Romney is joking or serious --- he did seem less concerned about Mrs. R than he could have been so as to get mileage from what he said over the plane incident. One of the biggest verbal klutzes I've had the dis-pleasure of but at the same time ambivalently silently saying thank God.
Been pouring rain here.....now that the drought is over and our trees don't know ( some are re-budding and blooming ) that it isn't Spring, but sure wish it had come earlier. It will fill our usually very high water table back to where it usually resides. Hope you all have a great day. Hang in there Alexandria...it gets way better.

Obama is declining to meet with Netanyahu today and I am glad. IMO, Netanyahu is a right wing fanatic who seems to think the US should do what benefits Israel; regardless of what it does for us. There's a difference between being Israel's close ally --which we have always been-- and its parent, which we are not. And Netanyahu has no right to think he can pronounce himself about our politics in the way he has.
Roger Cohen has a good colunm in today's Times about Bibi:
Excerpt:
The mistake Netanyahu has made is to believe he can go over the head of President Obama. He has tried through Congress, where his speech last year earned 29 standing ovations. He has greeted Romney in Israel as if he were on a state visit. He has said those "who refuse to put red lines before Iran don't have a moral right to place a red light before Israel." He has given critical interviews on U.S. TV networks in the midst of a presidential campaign. And he hath protested far too much that he has no intention - none - of swaying the outcome.
Some adjectives that come to mind are: brazen, reckless and irrational. Another is disingenuous: Obama has set a clear red line on Iran - he will not permit Iran to become a nuclear-armed state.
The president is angry. Not surprising that he has no time to meet with Netanyahu during his post-Yom Kippur visit to the United States this week for the United Nations General Assembly.

I think the important point here is that there is no proof of nuclear war heads - just as there was no proof of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Obama is wise to avoid rushing off to war just because Netanyahu wants him to do so. As the article said:
"In short, the facts are against Netanyahu. After Iraq, Americans, if they are go to war in a third Muslim country, want that war to be fact-based. His headstrong behavior has been ungrateful to Obama and undermining of Israel's true strategic interests."
I recall feeling quite ill (certainly not alone) when GWB announced the beginning of war on Iraq when the inspectors had found nothing. Wars are a big deal and should not be started on someone's whim or someone's efforts to get elected.
Bias alert: I grew up in a military family. My grandfathers both were in WW1 and both served again in WW2; four great uncles were killed in WW1. My Dad was in two wars (WW2 and Korea) and had a long military career. My Mom was in the army during WW2. All of my uncles were in the army during WW2. My Dad's brother was killed at age 22. My brother had a military career and my youngest son is in the army now. We never glorify war in our family.
-
I think one thing is clear, Romney has NO ability to tell jokes. He shouldn't even try. Maybe he doesn't have a sense of humor either. He seems awkward and inarticulate whenever he either tells a joke or responds to one.
-
Romney has the same problems that both Gore and Kerry had. He is stiff and trying to be likeable. I would bet that when he is relaxed with his friends and family, that he is probably genial and likeable, just as Gore and Kerry proved to be after they lost the elections. Maybe Romney will prove to be so as well
